Requirements Meet the General Requirements for Bright
Futures; Earn a minimum of 5 postsecondary credit hours
through CAPE industry certifications which articulate for college credit; and
Complete 30 service hours. Must be enrolled in a Career Education or
Certificate Program Upon completion of an AS degree, may receive up
to 60 credit hours towards a BS. Upon completion of an AAS degree, may receive
up to 60 credit hours towards a BAS. Eligible CAPE Certifications:

Recalculated GPA
A weighted scale is applied to college preparatory courses (Florida Academic Scholars, Florida Medallion Scholars, and Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Awards).
0.5 additional quality point for each full credit and .25 additional quality point for each half-credit is awarded for courses that are more challenging.
An unweighted scale is applied to career preparatory courses (Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award). All courses can be found in the Bright Futures Comprehensive Course Code Table at www.floridastudentfinancialaid.org/SSFAD/bf.
Local Honors courses do not receive additional quality points. Also, the (+) grade is not recognized by Bright Futures.

Why is Bright Futures Attainment Important?68% of BCPS High School Students have indicated low SES according to the FRD rate
Scholarship opportunities will be fundamental for continuing postsecondary education
Graduates opt to attend a state college in lieu of a university for financial reasons or not getting into the university of choice; additional students opt to attend college part-time for financial reasons
According to Forbes Magazine (Student Loan Debt in 2017: a $1.3 Trillion Crises), the average student in Class of 2016 has $37,172 in student loan debt
Many students are able to achieve the minimum GPA requirement for Bright Futures, but have
difficulty attaining the SAT/ACT score requirement
ATC Example (Class of 2017): 45% of students were GPA eligible for the Bright Futures
Academic Scholars, but only 13% received it due to not attaining the 1290 SAT/29 ACT requirement.
39% of students were GPA eligible for the Bright Futures Medallion Scholars, but only 19% received it due to not attaining the 1170 SAT/26 ACT requirement
How can we make our students college/university dreams more attainable?
Focus on SAT-Prep!Additional Benefits of improved SAT scores:•Students have a greater chance of being accepted at their university of choice•Students who are having difficulty meeting the required score on FSA-ELA and/or Algebra 1 may meet the requirement via SAT concordant scores
Students see value in the PSAT/SAT tests, therefore they put more emphasis into preparation
•Practicing and improving verbal (EBRW) and math skills will improve quality of work in all classes
Literacy:Essay & Language
English DepartmentWriting and Language Test preparation
ReadingAll courses (except math)
Add at least one reading comprehension passage with 8-12 questions to tests at least four times per quarter
Literacy Coach is available to assist with passage selection and question design
Math:Math Department will be responsible for the majority of teaching/test practice
Math tests should follow the question amount/timing of PSAT/SAT and should include both calculator and non-calculator sections
All courses10-minute math practice lesson once per day, each day in a different period via Canvas (created by ATC Math Department)
Monday-period 1; Tuesday-period 2; Wednesday-period 3; Thursday-period 4
Students will complete work in PSAT/SAT math practice composition book
SAT Prep
General:
All classes must complete a minimum of 30 minutes per week of SAT/Khan linked Personalized Pathways using computers/laptops/tablets
-Day/time is up to the teacher and can be varied; schedule must be submitted
All classes must have “timed” tests (according to students, their #1 enemy for SAT tests is TIME)
