He has even won an award for his work as a reading dog

and he went to London on a train to collect it.

While he was there, he visited 10 Downing Street where

the Prime Minister of Great Britain lives and the Houses of

Parliament where all the laws are made.

He was rather naughty that day.

Have you read the book about his adventure in London?

Now he is off to Iowa in America.

    He likes his publicity poster!

But first he needs a passport.

When we travel from one country to another, we need a

    passport.

    Do you have one?

    Danny doesnt.

So he needs to go to the Kennel Club in London to get

    one.

First, he has to have his photo taken.

    He smiles.

    No Danny you cant smile.

    He smiles.

    No Danny you cant smile.

    He smiles.

    No Danny, you cant smile.

The flash goes off so he puts on

    his sunglasses.

    No Danny, you cant wear

    those.

At last they are happy with

the photo and they ask him

    questions about his trip.

They ask him where he is going.

Danny is going to meet some very special children in

    America.

He will be the guest of Corridor Therapy Dogs who do the

same work as he does, but in Iowa.

Therapy Dogs work in schools, hospitals and libraries

    listening to children read.

They dont judge or criticize, they just listen to the children.

Children love reading to dogs like Danny.

See how Bobby is reading happily to Danny.

Bobby is usually quite shy about reading but Danny gives

    him lots of encouragement.

When Tony told him he was going to Cedar Rapids,Danny

thought it sounded very exciting but he doesnt promise to

    be very rapid himself.

Danny likes to take things real slow.

Danny loves his work and is looking forward to meeting

    American reading dogs.

Will they bark in American, he wonders?

America is just as wonderful as Danny hoped it would be

and he soon makes friends with the

    Corridor Therapy Dogs.

When he first arrives, Major Rascal checks him out.

He looks him up and down and has a good sniff.

But he can tell that Danny is a good therapy dog and he

    welcomes him to the team.

annoy Princess Stella and distract her from her work but

she doesnt pay Danny any attention. Shes too busy

having her tummy rubbed by one of the children.

    Danny likes Sir Sonny.

He seems pretty laid back, gentle and kind. He is the

oldest dog there and sets a very good example of how to

    behave as a reading dog.

He makes sure Danny knows what is expected of him.

But Dannys special friend is Jesse Junior.

  • 7/29/2019 Danny USA - Version 3

    18/31

Princess Stella just knows as soon as she sees them

together that there will be trouble and guess what?

    She is right.

Look at him balancing a ball on his nose!

Jesse Junior is a real character, lively and full of energy.

Danny feels tired just watching him play in the staff room.

He thinks he will be fun to hang out with.

  • 7/29/2019 Danny USA - Version 3

    19/31

Jesse will do anything for a treat and Danny soon learns to

    do the same.

    Their favourite treat is cupcakes.

After theyve listened to the children read in school, Jesse

Junior shows Danny around town and together they head

    off to the park.

Danny is hearing lots of new words in America so

sometimes he gets a bit confused.

One day while he and Jesse are out for a walk, he sees a

sign that said Kennels so he thinks he will go inside and

    make some more new friends.

These American dogs sure are a friendly bunch.

Danny is an impulsive dog and Jesse Junior is certainly up

for an adventure so in they go.

Although I have to share a secret with you .

Jesse Junior knows perfectly well that this isnt a kennels.

    Isnt he naughty?

  • 7/29/2019 Danny USA - Version 3

    21/31

There seems to be a big crowd of people and Danny looks

around to see where all the dogs are.

After all, this is a kennels, isnt it?

He can see lots of food, but no dogs, so he decides to

have a closer look at the snacks here because they smell

    great.

  • 7/29/2019 Danny USA - Version 3

    22/31

Suddenly a ball flies past his head.

He looks round to see where it came from.

There is a man dressed all in white running around with a

helmet on his head and a number on his back.

    How strange? Danny thinks.

    Now where are those dogs?

  • 7/29/2019 Danny USA - Version 3

    23/31

He wanders off and sees a stick lying on the ground so he

    picks it up.

Maybe someone will throw it for him to run after?

Suddenly there is shouting and cheering, so Danny, who

enjoys a bit of attention, decides he will run around with

the stick in his mouth just like the man did.

So off he goes, tail happily wagging, and he makes his

way round the bases just like the player.

This is pretty easy he thinks.I can do this.

Not wanting to be left out of the fun, Jesse Junior takes

one of the souvenir balls off a nearby sales stand and

    follows Danny around the bases.

It was a Minnesota Twins baseball!

The stall holder gives them each a

    baseball cap to wear.

Then along comes a very strange looking man.

He is sweeping the pitch with a broom and dancing aboutwith it.

    He is called Mr. Shucks.

    27/31

Suddenly someone very important looking comes over

and invites them to be guests in the V.I.P. box.

Danny has no idea what that is, but as they walk in, he

can see his favourite treats on the table in the corner.

    Guess who is also there?

Yes, it is Janet and Tony who have come to join them.

    28/31

Corridor Therapy Dogs are to be guests of the Cedar

Rapid Kernels for the rest of the day.

All their friends are there, although Major Rascal looks a

    bit crossly at them.

So dogs ARE there after all.

They all have a splendid time and Danny still has his

special baseball cap. He isnt allowed, however, to wear it

when hes on official R.E.A.D business such as when he

does his book signings. Its more of a book pawing really

as he cant write. He does pawing very well though.

Can you spot Dannys first book about his visit to London

    in the window?

    FIND OUT MORE ABOUT DANNY

    AND THE

    BARK AND R.E.A.D. FOUNDATION

Lots of dogs have special jobs working for the police andarmy, or helping people with disabilities or working onfarms. Danny the Greyhound has a special job too.Dannys job is to help children learn to love reading.Reading out loud can be a bit difficult sometimes. Its

easy to feel embarrassed reading out loud and childrenworry that someone will laugh at them if they make amistake. Sometimes it can be hard to sit still and payattention to the book. Because of this, some children dontlike reading out loud at all and find it very difficult.

This is where a dog like Danny can help.

Danny was trained with the Reading Education AssistanceDogs (READ) program, which is supported by The KennelClub as part of the Bark and Read Foundation. It aims tohelp children's reading and communication skills by givingthem a non-judgemental audience. Its mission is to haltthe decline in child literacy through training dogs and

sending them into schools and libraries to hear childrenread.

Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary said:

Dogs dont judge, they dont laugh or correct if a childmakes a mistake. In short, dogs are simply great listenerswhich makes all the difference for children who arestruggling to read. They caught onto this idea in the Statesa long time ago and there is plenty of proof that it works.

Here are some comments from schools that have used theprogram already.

There was one boy in our class who had extremely low

self-esteem and was declared to be essentially mute. Onhis first visit to Henry, he read his entire book, withouterror and in an audible voice. He would take sly looks atHenry but did not interact with him. In the weeks thatfollowed, progress has been exceptional. His reading hasdramatically improved and so has his confidence inreading aloud. He will now actively contribute ideas and is

thrilled when he is praised and valued. Despite variouspast interventions and strategies, nothing has come closeto reaching him in the way that Henry has. (St. MatthewsPrimary School in Middlesex)

"I have seen what a difference reading to dogs makes. Itbuilds the childrens confidence to a degree that we never

imagined possible and they actually look forward toreading time. Another factor that we never planned for, that turned out to be really important, is that the child feelslike theyre being the teacher, the one responsible forhelping the dog to understand the story.(BrightlingseaJunior School)

I like reading to Danny best of all!So says Alfie, a pupilat Maplefields School .

There are lots of dogs like Danny who visit schools andlibraries to help make reading out loud easy and fun.
