My name is Danny Yu. I recently obtained a Bachelor of sciences degree (Dean Scholar/Honor) in Industrial Design Major from San Jose State University, California. Through my study, I have equipped myself with various design strategies and skills. Aside from school, I also had intern-ship experience at Incumedx Ltd.,2010 which is a medical R&D firm.My posi-tion was junior design interns.

These academic periods and working experiences have prepared my design methods, leadership, communication skills, interpersonal skills, responsibili-ties, self-motivation and independence working styles which will possible fit on various working cultures. With my passionate in design, I would love to start my carrier on designing product soon.

ObjectiveTo apply a full time entry level of industrial design job with a progressive association that will use my knowledge, education, skill, and decision mak-ing ability hence increase my experience while developing products.

ExperienceIncumedx Ltd.Position: industrial design internshipDate: Feb, 2010 to May, 2010Job knowledge: During the internship, I focus on ideation sketching, re-search and testing on medical products. I also had teamwork experiences with other designers, electronic, mechanic, and ultrasonic engineer.

PersonaIn the 21st century, mobile tech-nology is no longer something new. Because of the populariza-tion of the mobile products like the cell phones, computers, cameras, and music player, many student have mobile device as their possession.

May is a college student. she interacts with different mobile derives daily. Electronic mobile devices are becoming part of her life. She will be panic if she loose her cell phone.

Empathic researchEmpathic research is a study about how the college students use their mobile device in campus. This research is focusing on the gesture of how students holding or interacting with their mobile devices.

The goal of this research is to un-derstand our current user’s habit and behaviour on using their mobile devices.

ProblemNowadays, student are too relying on the Internet. Most of the time, they would rather go online for checking information rather than searching a reference book from the library, which is a traditional way of student learn through searching. From the searching experience, student can learn more than they expected.

Most of the Course’s reference books are not always available to all stu-dent due to the limited quantity of books in the library.

Books are heavy and student don’t like to carry them around.

Books from the library are not allow to put notes on it.

Takes longer time to find information.

Returning books physically is a waste of time.

What is light?

“Light is electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength that is visible to the human eye in a range from about 380 or 400 nanometers to about 760 or 780 nm.”

“The speed of light in a vacuum is presently defined to be exactly 299,792,458 m/s (approximately 186,282 miles per second) Light is fast”

“In physics, the term light sometimes refers to electromagnetic radiation of any wavelength, whether visible or not.”

“We cannot see anything without light.”

“Light is energy”

Design List

The well development of light technology make artificial lighting is available everywhere. Because of that, the usage of energy is dramatically increased due to the fact that people use light for everything and everywhere, which create a problem of abusing the use of energy. I see a design opportunity for educating the people to save energy.

Remind user to turn off the light when the user leave the room. Help user to build up the habit of energy saving. Product needs to be aesthetically blend into the area.

In this stage, I tested the light diffusion on all variation of plastic shells. By doing this test, I learnt that simple form and subtle curve have a better projection of light which create the light feeling that I want.

O-switchThe final design is a silicon mask light switcher. This device is designed for educating user to build up a habit of being aware of energy use by remind them to turn off the light when the user leave the room. For the user convenient, a night light feature is attached into the design which allow user to have a little light support after the room light is off. Motion sensor in the switcher play the role of detecting user’s activity which used to active the Red signal light and a timer for the night light.

Page 37: Danny Yu's Portfolio

When user walk until 2.5 ft. way from light switch. Motion sensor in the light switch will activate the red signal light to draw user attention to turn off the light for saving energy. Red signal light will only blink five times which prevent annoying user if the user is not leaving the room.

How it works?

Once user turn off the light the red signal will be gone. User also have a option of holding down the light switch for 2 sec. It will activate the night light in the light switch, so that user still get enough illumination for activity.

O-switchThe O-switch design looks a lot better than the traditional light switch. It appeals aesthetically in a subtle perspective. By using led reminding user to turn off the light, that brings a big positive impact on energy saving which also help user to reduce the monthly electricity bills.

How would I design a product for my user who only knows how to cry?

I believe the key is “observation.”

New born Babies come to the world with no Knowledge, no friends, no ipod, no video games, no money, and no clothes. The closest to them probably are their parents. However, new born babies are un-able to speak language yet. How could they communicate with their needs? They cry, cry, and cry to capture the adults’ attention. But parents still need to guess what they want when they are crying.

After research and interview, I realize the current walking canes are absolutely not satisfying the baby boomer. The shape, the function, and the personal tastes on the walking cane have a lot room for improvement. Canes in the market are boring and making the users look older when being occupied.

From the feed back of my interviewee, majority of them feel wrist’s pain cause by using cane.

In order to test out what is causing the pain of using cane, I walked with a cane for 2 weeks. The result from my experiment shows that the pain is coming from the shock that everytime users place the cane to the ground as a sport for walking forward. Imagine users have to do the same motion hundred to thousand times a day. This could be a critical issues on their wrist.

Advertised as:

Having wood from sourced forest waste pineZero carbon emission manufacturingTimeless appealMaterials and manufacturing:Pine woodSheet steelLeatherPaintPowder coat

Critique:

Though the primary material may come froma recycled and renewable source, this is onlypossible because it is low to mid-volumeproduction.

The zero carbon emissions for manufacturinglikely comes from the fact that these are primarilyhand-made.

The main problem in terms of a stainabilitystandpoint is the end of life for this product. Allof the materials are either painted or powder coated,so re-use and recycling are unlikely.

Stakeholders’ point of view:

Expensive to manufactureLow volumeNot easy to re-use or recycleNot re-configurable

Advertised as:

Infinitely configurableMaterials and manufacturing:AluminumSteelPowder coat

Critique:

Although not advertised as “sustainable”, onecould argue that it is.Due to its ability to be re-configured, the shelvingsystem likely has a longer life span. With Exception of the powder coated steelshelves, the aluminum structure is fairly easy torecycle in comparison to wood.Stakeholders’ point of view:Configurable to consumer’s desiresNot advertised as sustainableLong life span

ShoesmateDesign a modern shoes storage that functions as a deodorizer

Page 125: Danny Yu's Portfolio
Page 126: Danny Yu's Portfolio

In today’s world, people tend to neglect shoe care in the name of laziness or disgust. Shoes are associated with descriptive modifiers such as dirty, germ-infested, and smelly mainly due to sweat and its ground contact.

As a result, shoes are carelessly thrown aside unorganized and exposed. This opens an opportunity to improve the management, cleanliness, and provide a better environment for the user.

Persona

ProblemAfter I decided to start this project, I visit most of my friend’s house to find out if the shoes odor is the common problem for most of the people.

As a result, everyone of them was having the same problem. However, they tends to ignore or cover it but never solve the problem.

Page 127: Danny Yu's Portfolio

GoalUnderstanding the problem by research, I find out the main problem of creating shoes odor and foot disease are the bacteria in the shoes.

Therefore, my goal for this project will be focusing on killing the bacteria in the user’s shoes and at the same time providing a nice spaces for organizing user’s shoes which also preventing the dirt/dust getting into user’s home.

When door open, the spring pushes the button up and sucks in deodorizer

These are one way open rubber door

When door close, button forced the deodorizer to the shooter which connected to the part 2 spraying system and create mist to deodorize the shoes

The deodorizer will continue to the part 2 spraying system through the adapter and distribute into the user’s shoes.
