This high-energy samba is perfect for festivals and concerts, and willwork great as an opener or a closer. The chart starts with a rhythm section groove. The dynamic is mf, but the energy and flow shouldmove. The fanfare beginning in measure 8 is played with aggression,followed immediately by the rhythm section groove at a softer dynamic.

The saxophone section states the melody at measure 20. There is dissonance here, embrace this and be sure it’s played in tune. Be surethat the brass are punchy and clean the second time at measure 21.The section at measure 36 should swing hard both times

The 4 measures beginning at measure 89 will need some carefulrehearsal by breaking it down into sections. First rehearse bass, basstrombone, bari saxophone and guitar. Next the upper 4 saxes, and thenthe upper 3 trombones. Put all 3 sections together to ensure that it’s istight. Finally, rehearse the trumpets, vibes, piano and drums togetherbefore putting everything together.

The long note and fall off at 106, should be just that…long! Start mea-sure 155 soft and let it build over 8 measures. At measure 162, 1st and2nd Trumpets should be loud and aggressive. It’s going to sound like afire alarm, but it’s off the hook with energy. Trading with the drummershould be tight and loud. The drummer is free to solo in between therhythms, but also needs to play the ensemble hits. Clean silence beforemeasure 183 is important. From there the melody is played and thenthe chart ends with the fanfare again. The open drum solo at measure212 should be dramatic and then cue that last big chord!
