Celebration and Commitment

The fiscal year that ended June 30, 2014 was a year of generosity, celebration and continuedcommitment to the Town of Darien by the Friends of the Darien Library.

In a year that once again showed that the quality and range of the Library’s services, resources,member support, staff engagement and innovation are unequalled, 1,140 Friends donated $610,826 tosupport Library activities, and the Gala raised $87,407.

Friends’ donations added 15,627 books to theLibrary’s collection, making a total of 116,720 thatcirculated 442,579 times during the year.

Friends’ donations supported the development of the innovative

Children’s T|E|A Room, providing technology, engineering and the artsto the children of the community and their families, and provided theresources to allow 199,629 users to log on to the Library’s computers,or access the Internet via WiFi.

The Board of Trustees continued their commitment to maintainingthe role of the Library in the community by undertaking projects toinstall a generator with enough power to maintain complete Libraryservices in the event of a power outage, and by upgrading the Library’sinnovative geothermal system.

Friends’ donations supported the programs thatwere attended by 51,774 engaged, enlightened andentertained patrons.

Friends revenues are combined from the results of the Annual Fund and Gala, transfers from the Capital Fund,the results of Library Operations such as overdue fines, interest, copying, room rental and book sales,and State Aid, which is related to the circulation of items, all of which were acquired by the private donationsfrom Friends of the Darien Library.

This year, we received $610,826 in contributions to the Annual Fund. Also, the Sixth Annual Spring Gala wasattended by 207 persons, and raised $87,407.

Friends expenditures are for books, whether they be published, books on CD, or electronicsuch as downloadable audio or eBooks, magazines, published and electronic, videos, programs,technology services for printing and copying, technology and capital expenditures, staff development,

fundraising expenditures, and library operations related to the activity of Friends,such as printing, postage, and allocated expenditures.

The Darien Library’s audited results will generally be availablefour to six months after the end of the fiscal year.

2013-2014Capital ProjectsSecuring the Library from Storm Outages

The Friends of the Library completed installation of a generator in November 2013, with capacity sufficientto maintain all services in the Library during power outages. The Board of Trustees recognized the criticalimportance of the role the Library has come to play whenever our neighbors suffer from storm damage, andcommitted to the installation of a 400 KW generator. The total cost of the project was $354,853.

This will allow the Library to always serve Darien as a place of warmth, light, comfort, friends and communitywhenever it is needed.

Upgrading the Geothermal System to Extend its Life and Enhance Efficiency

The Board of Trustees also completed a project in October 2013 to upgrade the Library’s innovative and cost-effective geothermal system. The upgrade installed a water-to-water heat exchanger which separated thegeothermal well water from the internally-circulating water which provides air conditioning in the summer andheat in the winter. The effect of the project will be to extend the life of the HVAC system, and improve its costefficiency.

Total cost of the project was $430,922.

Building Upgrade Projects

In addition to the major projects listed above, the Library Trustees also committed a total of $66,920 toprojects that will upgrade building systems. Included in these projects is a bi-polar ionization project to improveair quality, an enclosure to the automated book return to reduce noise and air infiltration, and a fiber optic linkto the police station to provide redundant security for technology resources.

The total of all capital projects undertaken during the 2013-2014 year was $852,695. Beyond the generouscommunity donations for the Generator Campaign, the source of the funding for these projects was theLibrary’s Investment Account.
