PORTRAITS
...when different moods coexist.
My first portraits take form in 2003, from the connections between photo shoots and Digital Image Processing using in the planning stage graphic softwares resources in order to achieve a personal pictorial output.My intention is to make visible that atmosphere which is hardly perceptible underneath the surface of reality but which sometimes pervades our everyday reality.

ANNA AND ISABELLA

This portrait articulates the deep bond between mother and daughter.They hold each other, in need; together they form a single figure, a symbol of life. Anna as an elongated shape to protect and care for her daughter, while Isabella appears collected inside the mother.

This work represents the beginning of Anzà’s artistic career. It presents the state of meditation and the creative moment that follows. His profile is in deformed shape, tapering at the center while the head swings back and forth. It represents thought through an hourglass or a sphinx—the juxtaposition of time and myth.

This picture belongs to a series of portraits executed with more realist qualities.Any time of day, the actions we perform, even the mundane tasks, can be significant. The woman pictured is Anzà’s mother, paused in the moment after she washes the lunch plates. The portrait does not reflect a special occasion, but simply a home environment and the actions over the years that become routine.

...In the absence of physical places my imagination creates its own space.
During the summer of 2001 I defined a great number of sketches traced instincti-vely giving full reign to the unsconscious and to imagination.Revisited in 2010, enhanced through new digital revisions and readapted for artistic supports, these drawings give life to the project Ariarosso.Each figure is the synthesis of a single memory, interweaving in new contexts, in the same way as the word itself acquires different meanings, these images give life to a visual diary, a project called Ariarosso.
Inside Ariarosso Project, an open search in constant evolution of painting, graphics and illustration, the Seven series represents the point of origin, the moment I laid down the conceptual and aesthetic criteria that would guide my path.

“Series Seven & Series Five”
Both series show two main characters—brothers—who symbolize the dualism in Anzà’s Project Ariarosso. The brothers are similar but not identical, and the imagery reflects the range of thoughts and images retrieved from memory and childhood consciousness..

FIVE SERIES

April 16 is a series of five works that arise from a common inspiration, but which differ in the choice of colors and details. The frame, an integral part of the original design and decorated with acrylic paint, is the common thread between each work, recalling all those symbols that recur in my work.

Dario Anza is a Sicilian painter currently based in Palermo. Born in 1980 and raised in the Sicilian capital, Anza went on to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of St. Abadir Martino delle Scale. After graduating in 2001, Anza pursued his varied artistic interests, making forays into set design, tombstone restoration, and even candle-making. But it was in 2006 that Anza fully committed himself to painting. That year marked the creation of his first major work, Selfportrait. The fusion of painting and digital art has been a continuous and distinguishing theme of Anza’s work. A digital process first appeared in Anza’s paintings in his 2006-2008 portrait series in oil. Instead of painting from life, the artist chose to paint from his own photographs. Since then, Anza’s interest in synthesizing painting and digital art has found its strongest iteration in his newest project, “Ariarosso.” Anza’s “Ariarosso” series melds memory with fantasy. Using design software, Anza finds freedom to experiment with composition before he sets to painting his distinctive colorful characters. Though deceivingly simple, these small canvases portray an unnerving psychological depth. Anza has called them a “visual diary” of his childhood.
