Saint John Maximovitch (1896-1966) was tonsured as a monk in 1926 and was ordained as a deacon in Milkovo Monastery in Yugoslavia. He was professor at the theological seminary "John the Baptist" in Bitola, and in 1934 was ordained bishop and sent to China, the Shanghai diocese, from where (at which time) the saint took refuge with his spiritual children in the Philippines. In 1951, he was appointed as archbishop in Western Europe, where he maintained a constant interest in pastoral care of both the Russian Diaspora, over which he labored tirelessly, and local people, having jurisdiction over the Orthodox Churches of France, Holland, Belgium and Spain. He also organized many philanthropic and charitable societies, hospitals, retirement homes, orphanages, and schools. Furthermore, he settled religious conflicts and raised churches. In America, he fought against contemporary heresies and founded Saint Herman of Alaska Brotherhood, which became the most important missionary center in California. He was a defender of the poor, an accomplished ascetic and a loving parent to orphans. A follower of the first apostles, he behaved in imitation of fools for Christ, often walking barefoot. At night he used to visit hospitals, nursing homes and hospices to pray at the bedside of the sick, many of whom were then miraculously healed by the intercessions of Saint John. Canonized in 1994, he's celebration is July 2.

Saint Calinic from Cernica (1787-1868) was tonsured as a monk in 1808 and shortly became the leader of the monastic congregation of Cernica, then bishop of Ramnic in 1850. He was one of the finest representatives of Romanian spirituality, a great patriot, as well as a lover and supporter of local tradition and culture. He managed in a wonderful way to reconcile the ascetic and contemplative life, by also actively initiating many organization and construction projects: founding many monasteries (Frăsinei, Pasărea, Căldăruşani, Icoana, Ghighiu, Poiana Mărului, Răteşi, Ţigăneşti, Ciorogârla) as well as many churches, hospitals, orphanages, schools and typographies, bringing about revivals throughout the whole of the theological and ecclesiastical life of Romania. His impressive spiritual life was full of abstinences, kindness and gentleness, posts and vigils, and numerous charities. He had lists of people to whom he always gave aid. If he had nothing else to give to charity, His Holiness gave the clothes he was wearing, and would those who were around him "to give money for poor brothers of Christ.” His prayers for the sick were swift and brought miraculous healing, also effective were his prayers for all those who were in any kind of trouble. He was canonized in 1955 and the day of he's celebration is April 11.

According to its own Articles of Incorporation and Status, The Foundation of Saint John Maximovich is an Orthodox Missionary Organization, nongovernmental, non-profit, apolitical and independent, established under Ordinance 26 of 2000 (Romanian legislation), in the purpose of performing missionary activities of the kind that the Holy Hierarch John Maximovich developed, mainly by programs of religious, educational and humanitarian type, in order to continue, with its humble means, the great apostolic work of the one who is the spiritual patron of the Foundation, together with Holy Hierarch Calinic from Cernica.

The Foundation works with the blessing of His Beatitude Theodore II, Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa and in partnership with the Orthodox Archdioceses of Congo, Kenya and Tanzania (see documents posted on website) with 22 missionary infrastructure projects (churches, schools, hospitals, dormitories) ongoing in these countries.

By ceasing this funding, most projects started in recent years have been stuck in various stages of implementation. This is the case of Congo and Kenya, where the orthodox missions are more than half a century old (eg. in those countries statistics show that over 50% of missionary school’s students become orthodox during an education stage). In Tanzania, where the Orthodox mission is younger (15 years) the economic crisis came at a time of real expansion. Due to the demographic explosion around the new golden mines and in order to absorb the over-demand in the education field, municipalities offered free land to the Orthodox Church, under the condition that schools would be built within a maximum 3 years term, with the sanction of revocation for not starting the works until the end of this period (see projects Nyankumbu-Geita and Ukerewe, where the deadline has already passed and the land may be lost at any time.

Why Africa?The whole orthodox missionary African structure is at present in serious financial difficulty because of the global economic crisis, before this time, it was able to rely upon the financial support of traditional Orthodox countries - Greece mainly.

We know that "in terms of energy, Africa is starving in the midst of plenty" - J.Stiglitz, Nobel Prize winning economist (eg., Electrification rates in concerned countries are: 20%-Congo, 14%-Kenya, 11 %-Tanzania); we know that one average African family has over 10 members who eat once a day and live in earthy huts covered with straw - given that, compared to Europe, prices of construction materials are 5-6 times higher and wages are less than half; we know that 70% of the income of such families is spent on children schooling; we know that because of poverty, people do not have access even to basic healthcare and on top of occupational diseases caused by non-ecological exploitation of natural resources, they die of diseases that in the occidental world are considered banal...

Indeed, the word is not enough. The church is the bridgehead. But African people must see that what is preached there has immediate application in their everyday reality. Churches we have already. But we have to build schools, homes, hospitals, canteens, and welfare centers to put around the churches. The vast majority of Africans suffer physically and mentally from practicing witchcraft, pagan traditions and local idolatrous beliefs.

Why infrastructure projects?Since his descent into Africa, the white man only brought violence, oppression, exploitation, injustice and abuse, sowing discord and maintaining poverty and disease in order to control the masses, ruthlessly pursuing nothing but immediate economic interests, seriously affecting the environment and health of the indigenous population.

Under these conditions the African people are rightly skeptical when the white man suddenly declares unconditional love, even in the form of the straightest institutionalized religion in this world.

We, the whites, must now demonstrate through our actions, that this time we keep our word and the love of orthodox people is not just another empty promise.We need to continue what we started. Otherwise, the Orthodox apostolate will permanently lock by losing its moral authority and even converts will return to their old practices.

BUT WHAT ANSWER

WILL WE GIVE?

Churches. But mainly schools, dormitories and hospitals. ALL CHARITABLE, BECAUSE ORTHODOXY MUST CONVINCE WITH FACTS. We need schools and dormitories, where children of Africa can escape from exploitation, poverty, delinquency and starvation without being asked for anything in return. We need hospitals, where Africans are treated as human beings, bearing the image of God and where orthodoxy annually saves thousands of lives. But it's not enough. Love should be multiplied over and over again, reinforced with acts and offered unconditionally.

With its humble means, the Foundation is currently developing 22 projects, in various stages of completion, all sanctioned in partnerships sealed at the bilateral level with one of the Orthodox Archdiocese mentioned. These documents can be fully examined on www.fsioanmaximovici.com, section “Proiecte in derulare,” including estimates of execution, graphical scheduling of works and payment installments, technical projects of execution, specialized drawings and photographs taken in each location by Foundation's representative. In 1976 one of the first Orthodox missionaries in Congo, Father Cosmas of Gregoriou, built on this plot the Church "St. Stephen", the church became impractical given the increased number of Orthodox in Katuba, it had to be partially demolished in order to build the joined Church of "Holy Fotini and Catherine ".

The foundation of this church and the steel structure already completed can be seen in the photo; in the background, the old church and the school "Light of Christ", where a classroom for religious services was provisionally arranged. The construction will fully comply with the technical project of the church "St. Sofia" (photo right) completed at Kipusi by the local partner of the Foundation also – The Orthodox Diocese of Katanga.

In Congo, the state health system is on the verge of bankruptcy; therefore patients are forced to choose private health structures. However, they prefer the orthodox hospital which is CHARITABLE and offer the best treatment conditions in the area; this is being officially recognized and awarded by International Human Rights Organization.

In the Katanga province, the population is exposed to specific occupational diseases caused by inappropriate use of uranium in mining (severe malformations of newborns, sterility, severe kidney disease), further health problems arise because of the lack of minimal prophylactic means, producing illness even in the cases of diseases considered ordinary in the occidental world. This extension is necessary due to the low number of beds of the existing structure (87 mounted - 120 in case of epidemics) which is why most patients are discharged before their complete healing. In addition to treating local diseases (malaria, typhoid, leprosy) the new structure will also include a maternity ward and the first dental service in this region. Our project is to complete the construction of a new hospital building that will expand the capacity of the Orthodox "Sts Cosmas and Damian" Hospital in Kolwezi (Katanga provincial capital) from 6000 to 10,000 patients annually.

This is the school "Light of Christ", located in the vicinity of the Church "Holy Fotini and Catherine" mentioned above. Construction is almost finished, and to become functional still requires electrical installations and plumbing, gutters and finishing work. The school's capacity will be over 800 children annually - primary and secondary.

SCHOOL TSHALA (“SCOALA TSHALA”)Location: R.D.Congo, Katanga ProvinceBeneficiaries: 18,000 peopleAmount already invested: 3.000 USDAmount required: 24.000 USD

Built 36 years ago, near the Orthodox Church "Saint Anastasia", the school "Light of Christ 4" works so far without electrification, no drinking water and no bathroom. In the building shown in the picture, over 500 students (in 3 rooms of 48 sqm!) are taught in two shifts, in overcrowded spaces at very high temperatures. During the rainy season (6 months/year) when the day is shor-ter, the last courses are virtually held in the dark.

Due to ongoing degradation of the building, in recent years the building has become impractical and even risky for children's lives, and for this reason more and more students dropped out, and even parents are reluctant to send their children to school.

The proposed works consist of urgent renovation and strengthening of the existing building and construction of 4 classrooms of 50sqm each, an office, a bathroom and a water well.

SCHOOL LWALABA (“SCOALA LWALABA”)Location: R.D.Congo, Katanga ProvinceBeneficiaries: 15,000 peopleAmount required: 24.000 USD

The 30 years old School "Light of Christ 9" has never been renovated and is in poor condition similar to Tshala school (shown above) operating with 600 students in three overcrowded rooms (40sqm each!) without electricity and with very poor study conditions.

The building is close to the Orthodox Church "St. Andrew" from Lwalaba (pictured overleaf), in a region where the average population density is 5.8 inhabitants / km ², children are being forced to walk long distances to reach school, which is yet another reason to quit education.

The situation being similar to that of Tshala school (except for the pit toilet and water well - already built), the school urgently requires the renovation and strengthening of the existing building , also to build 4 classrooms and a 50sqm administration office

CHURCH MORONGIOT (“BISERICA MORONGIOT”)Consacrated to: Saint John MaximoviciLocation: Kenya, Nandi District Beneficiaries: 50,000 peopleAmount already invested: 30.000 USDAmount required: 22.000 USD

In recent years the Orthodox population of this district has grown so much (90% Orthodox) that the old church (built in 1990) had to be partially demolished to rebuild a new one three times larger in size. The new church will have 160sqm and it will be made of durable materials.

Finalizing works of the church are: masonry comple-tion, metal roof, ceramic flooring, plastering, painting, windows + doors, electrical installation and bell tower.

SCHOOL NAIROBI (“SCOALA NAIROBI”)Location: Kenya, NairobiBeneficiaries: 3.2 million peopleAmount already invested: 40.000 USDAmount required: 150.000 USD

The Kenyan education system requires school fees, except from orthodox structures that are charitable. For this reason, for orphans or children from other disadvantaged groups, Orthodox schools are the only chance to have access to education. But when they get out of institutionalized adult supervision, these children end up on the street, forced to do anything to survive - which is why in Kenya, juvenile crime is a serious social disease.

Existing foundation

The Missionary Centre in Nairobi has only a primary school (6-14 years old). In the absence of a secondary school, most primary school graduates give up education at the most vulnerable ages, consequently entering the Kenyan criminal environment (alcohol, drugs, prostitution, etc).

For the children who will learn in this school, the Foundation will build also a dormitory, objective detailed in the next project. In the photo can be seen the foundation of the school (90% completed) and the plot on which this dormitory will be built.

DORMITORY NAIROBI (“CAMIN NAIROBI”)Location: Kenya, NairobiBeneficiaries: 3.2 million peopleAmount required: 125.000 USD

This dormitory will serve both the Secondary School and the Superior College of the Nairobi Missionary Centre (schools foundation photographed in remote plan). The dormitory will provide free accommodation and meals for all the students of these structures.The dormitory is meant to ensure a favorable environment for education and healthy personal development for orphan students and as well as for those coming from other disadvantaged circumstances. Except for the Orthodox charitable educational structure, these students would not have another chance to continue their studies, being exposed to abusive exploitation so characteristic in the social environment of the Kenyan capital area.

In this district the Orthodox population number is 7,000, and the 40 years old existing church is too degraded and too small for our faithful already. This temporary building is proposed to be demolished in order to build a new one on the new foundation next to the old church. It will run the same technical design as in the Morongiot project (160sqm church), with stone masonry, reinforced concrete belts, metal roof, ceramic flooring, plaster, pain-ting, windows+doors, electrical installation and bell tower.The new foundation next to the old church

DORMITORY KESENGEI (“CAMIN KESENGEI”)Location: Kenya, Aldai RegionBeneficiaries: 70.000 peopleAmount already invested: 12.000 USDAmount required: 50.000 USD

The existing structure accommodates over 400 children, facing the same typical problems as in the aforementioned project "SCHOOL NAIROBI".

The complex of Kesengei consists presently of a secon-dary school, a church and an overcrowded dormitory. Currently, two classes are arranged with a dormitory for 60 boys, however with the lack of a canteen, children have to eat on the school yard (photo left). It is intended to complete the construction of a dormitory with 70 beds and a canteen to serve the whole structure, the works being stuck with the present status: foundation completed + 20% masonry.

SCHOOL KAPKECHUI (“SCOALA KAPKECHUI”)Location: Kenya, Eldoret DistrictBeneficiaries: 80.000 peopleAmount required: 45.000 USD

Here the Orthodox educational structure consists in a pri-mary school attended by over 300 children annually. For these children, the only chance to attend a secondary school in this region is enrolling in the catholic one.

Our project proposes the construction of a CHARITABLE secondary school consisting of a building with 7 rooms (60sqm each), 5 for classes and 2 for teachers. Given the scale of this project, both primary school graduates from the existing school and children from other disadvantaged groups will have a chance at education in this extremely poor region.

DORMITORY BUSALI (“CAMIN BUSALI”)Location: Kenya, Vihiga DistrictBeneficiaries: 100.000 peopleAmount required: 29.000 USD

In this district the Orthodox population is nearly 60%, a marked increase in recent years, which is why the number of students has grown at a rate that exceeded the capacitys of education and accommodation of this 25-year-old complex.

Currently the complex includes a church, a medical center, an overcrowded dormitory for girls (70 girls in 40 seats) and a multipurpose room which is currently also used to accommodate girls. For lack of a dormitory for boys, they are crowded (two per seat) in extremely damaged classrooms which are unsuitable for accommodation (see photo). Our project is to increase the accommodation capacity of the center with a girls dormitory (60 seats) and a boys dormitory (200 seats) in order to create a decent learning environment for these children.

ARCHDIOCESE MWANZA (“ARHIEPISCOPIE MWANZA”)Location: Tanzania, Nyamagana DistrictBeneficiaries: 1 million peopleAmount required: 239.700 USD

The Orthodox Mission in Tanzania is in its beginning stages. The first Orthodox church in Mwanza is the Cathedral "Saint Nicholas" (photo right). The cathedral is under construction and will be completed during 2013 (funding completely covered). It has 430 sqm and is situated on a plot of 6000 sqm, where is to build the archdiocese buil-ding also, according to the authorized project.

This will be a two-story building containing the minimal administrative space required for the archdiocese. At the ground floor will be offices for the archbishop and for the vicar and secretary, administrative rooms and bathroom; upstairs, a chapel and accommodation for the clergy.

Due to the deficit of secondary schools on this island, given the demographic growth in recent years, the city hall has offered free land to the Orthodox Church in order to build a secondary school. According to Tanzanian law, if works do not begin within three years, the city hall has the right to revoke this act. This term expired in 2012. IT IS THUS COMPULSORY TO START WORK IMMEDIATELY, in order not to lose this land, which is set to build the first Orthodox Missionary Center of this island (see following 2 projects).

SCHOOL UKEREWE (“SCOALA UKEREWE”)Location: Tanzania, Ukerewe Island Beneficiaries: 320.000 peopleAmount required: 270.000 USD

The center, dedicated to St. John Maximovici, is positioned amidst an area that is the subject of a recent urban development project approved by local city hall, which also provides an airport nearby. The secondary school to be built will have two floors (total 1100mp) and will be equipped with classrooms, laboratories and a library, as required by legislation (detailed plans on the site).

CHURCH UKEREWE (“BISERICA UKEREWE”)Consacrated to: Saint John Maximovici Location: Tanzania, Ukerewe Island (Lake Victoria)Beneficiaries: 320.000 peopleAmount required: 22.000 USD

The church will be constructed on durable materials and will serve for the first Orthodox missionary center in Ukerewe, to which reference was made in the previous project. On this island there are not any other Orthodox churches and no other Orthodox establishment.

The Missionary Center will contain, besides the Church of St. John Maximovici, also the Secondary School presented in the previous project (to which should be added in time a college, a faculty, a dormitory and a medical clinic) and the administrative center presented in the next project.

ADMINISTRATION UKEREWE (“ADMINISTRATIE UKEREWE”)Consacrated to: Saint John Maximovici Location: Tanzania, Ukerewe Island Beneficiaries: 320.000 people

This objective is necessary to manage the full Orthodox missionary center in Ukerewe and will contain both the parochial house where the priest who will serve in the Church of St. John Maximovici shall dwell, and the administrative area with related dependencies.

The building will have an area of 70sqm and must be built together with the church and the Secondary School, the latter being a legal obligation in order not to lose the land provided by the local municipality for this purpose - remember that the term of three years to begin work has already expired.

Near the church is a building of cells. Also intended to be financed in the project is the finishing of the church by completing the roof, plastering, flooring, doors, windows and painting.

MONASTERY KAAGYA (“MANASTIRE KAAGYA”)Consacrated to: VIRGIN MARYLocation: Tanzania, Bukoba District Beneficiaries: 2 million peopleAmount already invested: 15.000 USDAmount required: 60.000 USD

Near the church is a block of cells where a chapel is improvised. Here lives Father Demetrios, the first monk in this country. To complete the church (the same technical design as in Kibuye) required the following works are required: completion masonry, the roof, plastering, flooring, doors, windows and painting.

Started 6 years ago, the works for the church of the first monk monastery in Tanzania were stopped at the level of 20% masonry.

This is the first Orthodox monastery of nuns in Tanzania. The church is "on red," roof is 80% completed.

This dormitory shall serve Orthodox secondary school in Kayanga where students are currently accommodated in classrooms (photo left), which is why authorities have warned the school board to begin the works immediately to build a dormitory, under the penalty of interruption of didactic activity..

The dormitory must be constructed in strict compliance with the technical specifications laid down by the ministry of education in Tanzania, with 48 beds, two storage areas and other appurtenances, in accordance with the Tanzanian law.

ESTABLISHMENT KAYANGA (“COMPLEX KAYANGA”)Location: Tanzania, Karague DistrictBeneficiaries: 500.000 peopleAmount required: 245.000 USD

Since Kayanga educational structure is in a rural area, in order to obtain legal authorization as a "Boarding School," according to legal regulations, the law demands that on the same plot (see photo) a permanent accommodation facility for the school staff of the whole structure to be created in addition to the secondary school and dormitoryThe technical requirements for these buildings are strictly imposed by the Tanzanian authorities that must be compulsory followed. These projects require the construction of a separate management staff house (100sqm) and a minimum of three duplexes for the teaching staff (3x180mp).

In Tanzania primary education is free and provided by the state. But secondary school requires tuition, except Orthodox educational structures. As in Kenya, also here many graduates of primary schools give up education for lack of money. The Orthodox CHARITABLE system is their only chance to have access to higher education and a healthy personal development.

SCHOOL NYANKUMBU (“SCOALA NYANKUMBU”)Location: Tanzania, Geita DistrictBeneficiaries: 80.000 peopleAmount required: 270.000 USD

Currently Geita district officials are facing a broad demographic explosion generated by the opening of new mining industrial exploitations, for which they provided free land in Nyankumbu for the Orthodox Church, with the obligation to build a secondary school within maximum three years, in order to reduce the big deficit of schools in the region.

Different from Ukerewe is that on a plot adjoining the land offered by the city hall, the Mission has already completed the construction of an Orthodox church (photo above) and a parish house (photo left). By adding this secondary school, the purpose is also to create a missionary center similar to the one in Ukerewe (the technical design used will be exactly the same).

HOSPITAL BUKOBA (“SPITAL BUKOBA”)Location: Tanzania, Bukoba DistrictBeneficiaries: 2 million peopleAmount required: 150.000 USD

The quality of health services in Tanzania is the re-sult of lack of money, lack of professional medical staff, the poor infrastructure, lack of electricity and water.

In Bukoba an orthodox medical center already exists, with 3 buildings well equipped but only for outpatient services, without the possibility of hospitalization. There is also a dentistry service, a pharmacy, and 3 labs for analysis. In this medical center the most important tropical diseases (yellow fever, malaria, leprosy) are treated as well as endocrine diseases (diabetes), heart disease, etc.

Patients come from very remote areas (even from Uganda) because this medical center provides services and equipment that are only available here. It is also the only place that offers, professional care for both: body and soul, and the most important of all is to mention that IT OFFERES EVERYTHING IN FULL CHARITY.It is proposed to partially finance the authorized project approved, which includes the construction of a new building complex (the plot in photo left) that includes, in order of priority: a chapel dedicated to St. Panteleimon, three units for hospitalized patients (women, men, children), incinerator room, maternity, ophthalmology and accommodation for medical missionary staff.

Here the situation is similar to the one in Ukerewe: the 3-year term to begin the school construction has already expired and the land can be lost at any time.

To create a sustainable partnership with its donors, the Foundation is committed to keep you updated by a monthly e-mail about the status of the project for which you have chosen to make a donation. Therefore we invite you to write in the payment document the name of

the chosen project (the 2 words) and your e-mail address.Also, upon completion of each project,

the Foundation will organize a trip on the spot for all those who made a donation for that objective, in order to attend its inauguration.
