Ian has provided lectures to hundreds of schools around the world and has appeared on various media and radio outlets, sharing his insightful recommendations on how best to educate boys. Among other things, Ian shares his opinion on: specific practices to engage boys in learning, practical and hands-on approaches to bullying, curriculum delivery and behaviour management, gender specific learning styles, theories in dealing with male students from birth to adulthood, strategies to deal with issues of technology in this ever-changing world, improving academic achievement, recommended physical structures of boys’ schools and whole school policies for school improvement. Multicultural Week 2016

St Mary's College will celebrate its various cultures during Multicultural Week: Monday 23rd - Friday 27th May. During this week we

have many activities planned including: sporting activities, a special celebratory assembly, various foods from countries around the

world, a public addresses and a multi-cultural formal meal with families. St Mary's College has as a foundational Edmund Rice theme,

the inclusivity of all people. We embrace all the different nationalities present at St Mary's College. All boys make up an important

fabric of life at the College. Happy multicultural week.

Plain Clothes Day

Many thanks to our Senior leaders who have organised a Plain Clothes Day this Thursday, 19th May. All funds raised will go towards

Orange Sky Laundry. The visit by Orange Sky Laundry Australians of the Year, Nicholas Marchesi and Lucas Patchett has inspired our

boys to raise much needed funds to ensure that all street people are given dignity and respect with clean clothes each day. Well done,

gentlemen.

Japanese Excursion

Our Year 9, 10 and 11 boys will be extending their learning through a Japanese excursion to Brisbane on Tuesday 24th May. During

this excursion the boys will shop at a variety of Japanese stores and share in a Japanese meal. Language development and cultural

understanding are key to this excursion. I thank our Japanese teacher, Mrs Robyn Topp and our Curriculum Leader of English/

Languages, Ms Liisa Hammond for organising this learning activity for the boys.

TAFE Open Day

Our Senior boys have been invited to attend the TAFE QLD South West Open Day next Tuesday, 24th May. This day provides the

opportunity for the boys to explore the TAFE campus, try a trade, find a course and ask teachers questions regarding TAFE study and

to listen to a key-note address by Yassmin Abdel-Magied, the 2015 Queensland Young Australian of the Year.

I thank Miss Jennifer Smeed (Director of Senior Pathways) who will be accompanying the boys.

Business Excursion

On Thursday 19th May, our Year 11 and 12 Business students will undertake an excursion to Wellcamp (Brisbane West) airport,

McDonalds Harristown and Bunnings West store. The areas studied will include: business innovations, workplace health and safety,

customer service and business logistics. This very interesting excursion will be led by Mrs Samantha Parle (Business Teacher).

Visual Arts Excursion

Today the Year 11 and 12 Art students had the opportunity to travel to GOMA to see the Creative Conversations Students’ Art Exhibition

which showcases the best artwork of schools from across Queensland. This along with bodies of works by artists Anish Kapoor and

Yvan Goang-Ming will no doubt provide inspiration to our boys. I thank Mrs Anne O’Sullivan (Art teacher) and Dr Bradley Voltz

(Director of Arts /Performance) for organising this opportunity for the boys.

Darling Downs Representatives

Well done, Dillon McFeeters (Rugby League), Tyson Liesch (Touch) and Joseph Brendon (U/18 QSS Presidents Touch Team) who

will represent St Mary's College at the various Darling Downs schoolboys’ events over the coming weeks. Good luck, gentlemen.

Congratulations to the open softball team who won the Golden Glove Darling Downs Softball Challenge on Thursday.

May our loving God walk with all members of the St Mary’s College family.

Mr Michael Newman – Principal

FAITH SNAPSHOT

Pentecost: Sunday just gone, we celebrated the feast of Pentecost in the Church’s calendar. This feast day is often referred to the

‘birthday of the Church’, given that it was the time when the Apostles and Mary received the Holy Spirit and moved beyond their fears

to go about spreading the ‘good news’ to all who would listen. In many ways, Pentecost reminds us to be ever present to God’s call in

our own lives, and to recognise the gifts of the Spirit, viz. wisdom, understanding, right judgement, strength, knowledge, reverence, and

awe and wonder, as virtues to aspire to, irrespective of how far along our life journey we may be. Please keep in your prayers those

boys in our community who approach their reception of the Sacraments: Caleb Brown, Logan Brown, Noah Clancy, Harrison Clancy,

Harrison Cliffe, Jacob Hess, Kaleb Hess and Matthew Hess. These boys and their families have been preparing well with open hearts

and I thank them all for their commitment to the program.

Free Dress Day Thursday: On Thursday our boys are able to wear free dress to raise money for the “Orange Sky Laundry”. Orange

Sky Laundry visited the College a number of weeks ago, sharing with us their journey of developing Australia’s first mobile laundry

service for the homeless. It is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our support by wearing free dress (perhaps ORANGE) on

Thursday. Thank you in anticipation!

Cultural Diversity Week 2016

Next week, our College will celebrate the many cultures that exist in our community in a variety of ways:

Monday First Break – Staff vs ‘the World’ Touch Football Match on the Oval

Tuesday Assembly Cultural Diversity Assembly – Smoking Ceremony, Welcome to Country, Recognition of ‘National Sorry

Day’, Cultural Opening Liturgy, Flag Ceremony, Student Guest Speaker

Tuesday Second Break – Indigenous Dance Workshop on Centenary Court

Wednesday First Break – ‘Indigenous Games’ on the grassed area on Hill Street

Thursday Indigenous Leadership Day with Peter Mulcahy

Thursday Night Cultural Diversity Week Dinner

Friday – First Break Entertainment from Local African Talent and ‘Spiders’ and other goodies on sale to raise money to donate

to TRAMS.

As well as that, the tuckshop will be adopting an international theme also, cooking cuisine from various countries throughout the world

over the five days. I look forward to sharing in this event and trust that it will be a great opportunity to shine a light on, and celebrate,

the diversity that exists in our College community.

Rosies: Many thanks to Steve Sowter, Ashley Sowter, Leanne Kratzman and Leah Dempster who joined students Ian Searle-Crossley,

Corey Buckley, Rory Brown, Ben Broderick, Jarrod Keppel, Nicholas Joy and Jack Spencer serving for Rosies on Friday night. Your

enthusiasm is appreciated and welcomed!

Blessings for the coming week.

Ms Sharon Collins, Assistant Principal Identity – [email protected]

Prayers: Please include these families in your prayers.

Alex Myers (Year 7) whose father Michael Myers passed away suddenly on Saturday. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord.

Prayers: We pray for sick members of the St Mary's College family.

Dave Nielsen (father of Mr Andrew Nielsen) who is critically ill.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL – STUDENT WELFARE

Uniforms: As the weather gets colder it is timely to remind everyone of the uniform expectations during the colder months.

The academic jumper must be worn with the academic uniform. Students may wear other jumpers under it but the academic

one must be on top.

Hoodies are not acceptable and boys will be asked to remove them even if they are under the academic jumper.

Boys are required to wear their academic uniform to and from school every day except their sports day (Wednesday –

secondary: Friday – Primary)

The sports jumper can only be work during sport or when it is raining.

College tracksuit pants and sports jacket can only be worn on sport days or during PE.

For Seniors the blazer is compulsory to and from school every day in Term 2 and 3.

Beanies are not permitted but College scarves are.

Punctuality and Preparedness: As we move into midterm, assessment draws closer and workloads increase. Students who attend all

classes and arrive on time fully prepared have a much better chance of success than those who are late and unprepared. Please talk to

your son about the importance of being prepared for class and being on time. It maximises learning time, minimises disruptions and

shows a level of courtesy and respect to other classmates and the teacher.

Reducing teenage anxiety: Recent studies are showing that lack of sleep is a major contributor to anxiety. Teenage boys need sleep

more than their phone and other electronic equipment. Please consider taking electronic equipment from your son one hour prior to bed

so their brains can settle and they can get to sleep. Phones and other electronic devices in their room on silent/vibrate can still wake

them and disturb their sleep.

Research out of Monash University has found a direct link between a reduced amount of quality sleep and constant access to their

phones. Lack of sleep does not allow the body to refresh and the stresses of school, home and social life can build up and cause anxiety.

Anxiety affects teenage boys in many ways including depression, lack of motivation and fear of social settings.

YEAR 7 UPDATE

With Term 2 underway the Year 7 cohort has had ample time to become accustomed to College expectations and rules. It has come to

the attention of staff that some students are starting to push boundaries in regards to punctuality and preparedness for class. As well,

insolence is becoming an issue. These issues have been addressed with the cohort and staff are working with students to monitor these

unwanted habits by using the Responsible Thinking Process in conjunction with preparedness and punctuality forms. The RTC is not a

form of punishment but a chance to reflect and work on strategies to stop these habits. I encourage all parents to assist the College in

setting expectations of punctuality, preparedness and respect. It is an expectation that all students have, at minimum, a fully charged

iPad, a fully stocked pencil case and class specific book. Please speak with your son to make sure this equipment is making its way to

school. In regards to punctuality and respect it is encouraged that you speak to your son on how to ensure this occurs. I hope that if the

College and parents work together we can break these bad habits before they severely interrupt student learning opportunities. Finally

I would like to thank the students who attended the social afternoon with Fairholme a few weeks back. The boys had an excellent time

and behaved very well.

GOLDEN GLOVE SOFTBALL CHALLENGE

On Thursday 12th May, the St Mary’s College softball team participated in the Golden

Glove Softball Challenge at Kearney Springs. The boys were a little nervous at first

(though it could have just been the 3°C temperature making them shiver) seeing as

more than half the team was in Year 9 or younger and they were facing teams of

mostly seniors! The boys beat Centenary Heights SHS 11-4 and then comprehensively

beat Laidly SHS 17-0.

This put them into the final against arch-rival Harristown. Against some excellent

opposition (including 2 Queensland state players) the boys kept calm, collected and

ended up beating Harristown 4-2 (with an innings to spare). This is the first time in a

very long time that we have beaten Harristown and the boys were absolutely thrilled.

The next step for the team is to compete in the State Finals on Saturday the 21st May.

advised that you assist your son in securing a placement for this period in the near future. It is important to note, however, that the onus

DEVELOPING GOOD STUDY SKILLS

Make a plan for organising the study environment and study time at home. Your child should be involved in making the plan so

they know exactly what is expected.

Assist your child in developing organisational skills. Many children need help in know how to be organised. Work on one

organisational skills at a time. Your child will be less overwhelmed than if they are trying to do everything at once.

Work with your child to develop a checklist of materials needed at school and materials needed at home. Display this in an obvious

place such as a bathroom mirror or inside the car. Have your child check it every day.

Design a system where you periodically check your child’s folders and schoolwork. Have your child bring home folders regularly

so that you can share what they are learning at school, what assignments they are working on and so on.

Promote a love of reading in your home. Turn off the TV and computer and have a reading night at least once a week. Use your

imagination and creativity to make the most inviting place in your home the “reading area”.

Work on improving memory techniques. Look for games that require a good memory. Make a list of all the techniques you and

your child can think of which help to remember things.

Help your child make flash cards, mind maps, charts, lists or drawings to learn key terms or facts.

Be aware of a drop in school marks or achievement. Find out why this is happening before the problem gets severe.

Discover your child’s academic weaknesses. Brainstorm ways to make learning fun in these areas.

Don’t use threats; have reasonable and enforceable consequences for misbehaviour. If you need to take away a privilege, make the

punishment fit the crime and make sure you can enforce it.

Collect success stories of people who are self-motivated. Look for similar characteristics in your child and point these out.

Help your child create their own external motivators. Instead of giving rewards to your child for doing something right or

accomplishing a goal, have the child think of a way to reward themselves after the task is completed. This teachers deferred

gratification.

Don’t overload your child with activities. Choose to omit some activities so the family has time at home together.
