Manager’s column

Managers Notes Sponsored by

35 WEST AUCKLAND ROAD, DARLINGTON

Hello, and welcome to the game.

TECHNICAL AREA

I thought the players showed how strong their character and determination are during Saturday’s game against Stourbridge.

Our plans were thrown into disarray when Kevin Burges had to pull out of the game less than 15 minutes before Saturday’s kick off, but the players really stepped forward and put themselves on the line by getting in tackles, blocks, and getting back behind the ball to make life difficult for the Stourbridge attack.

When you consider that the back four was thrown together at the last minute, they did very well indeed. Leon Scott and Terry Galbraith were two big men in the centre of defence in the second half, and I thought Leon’s goal-saving tackle when the score was 1-0 was magnificent.

Terry Galbraith has played in the centre half position earlier in his career, and I thought he and Leon nullified their two main strikers.

Everyone defended well, which only goes to show the strong

desire and endeavour that exists in our dressing room.

We always knew that the Stourbridge game was going to be a tough challenge, and I believe that given the fact that they have two very good forwards and two wide men who are just as good, then they are probably the best wide we have played this season. You can understand how they beat Blyth earlier on in the season.

Your support was fantastic on Saturday. As a manager, I kick and head every ball – just like the rest of my staff do on the bench -- but I could tell that a lot of you were doing the same when Stourbridge were pushing us back in the first half! The lads responded to your encouragement, especially in the closing minutes.

Tonight against Workington is another tough game, and again the players will have to give everything, which I always expect.

Enjoy the game

Martin

I think I might be sitting out tonight’s game again.

I couldn’t believe it when I had to pull out of last Saturday’s game against Stourbridge just before the kick off. I was just coming to the end of our pre-match warm up session, and I was doing quickfeet. Just as I sprinted off the last one, I strained my calf when I landed. I tried to run it off, but I couldn’t.

Our physio strapped it up, and I tried to run up the tunnel, but I couldn’t even jog, so I had to pull out of the team. Fortunately, Martin sorted something out at the last minute, but it threw the gameplan out of the window. I think it’s unlikely that I’ll be playing tonight.

Considering that they’d never played together before, I thought our back five was tremendous. Leon Scott made two amazing blocks, one of which was the best I’d ever seen on Karl Hawley in the first half. He had no right to get there, but he threw everything at the ball and stopped a goal.

Peter Jameson had his best game since I’ve been to the club, he showed how good a shot-stopper he really is, and some of his saves were superb. He was the man of the match, but every Darlo player

on the field was a man of the match to me.

I thought we had a very good first 20 minutes and went 1-0 up, but once they equalised, I thought the wind was knocked out of our sails a little bit and we were forced back. The midfield lads did a great job in protecting the back five, they didn’t want to stretch themselves and get caught on the break.

There was some heroic defending, and what struck me was, when I was sat in the back of the stand, how 300 or so fans cheered every tackle and interception – I think they were heading and kicking every ball like I was! The lads were flinging themselves at the ball and scrambling it away, and everyone cheered. It shows how much people want us to do well in this league.

That was a massive point for us against another promotion contender, and could be really important at the end of the season.

This will be a tough game for us again tonight, Workington are doing well this season and they gave us a few problems when we played them at their place.

So it’s going to be another nailbiter!

Enjoy the game.

OUR VISITORS...

Workington were once managed by former Darlo favourite Ken Furphy – read all about them in Our Visitors.

Workington A.F.C were originally one of the founder members of the Cumberland Association League in 1888 and played at Lonsdale Park. In 1894 they moved to the Cumberland Senior League, then in 1901 joined the Lancashire League. The league closed two seasons later, and they returned to the Cumberland Senior League. In 1904 the club were admitted to the Lancashire Combination. In the 1910 season they decided to economise and join the North Eastern League. But, after only one season, the club folded.

The new Workington A.F.C. was born in 1921 and immediately joined the North Eastern League. During the 1933/34 season, the club managed its best-ever FA Cup performance, reaching the 4th round, before losing to Preston North End. Later in the decade, the club moved to its present home, Borough Park. In 1951 the club was voted into the Third Division North of The Football League replacing New Brighton.

Their first season in the League was a sign of things to come; the club finishing rock bottom, and only improving by one place the following year.

From 6 January 1954 to 15 November 1955 the club was managed by Bill Shankly, who would achieve fame between 1959 and 1974 with his success at home and abroad as manager of Liverpool.

During the 1957/58 season they played the great Manchester United team known as the Busby Babes at home in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, attracting a record crowd of 21,000.

This was just a month before eight of the United players lost their lives in the Munich air disaster.

However, at the end of that season, the club dropped into the new Fourth Division under a reorganisation of the Football League which saw the abolition of the regionalised Third Divisions.

In 1964, player-manager Ken Furphy – who is also one of Darlington’s all time greats --led them to 3rd position, earning promotion to the Third Division. During both the 1963/64 and 1964/65 seasons, they made it to the quarter-finals of the League Cup, where they lost to West Ham United and Chelsea (in a replay) respectively. During the latter cup run, the club beat Lancashire neighbours Barrow 9–1, a record victory which remained until the mid-1980s.

In 1966 they finished in fifth place, narrowly missing out on promotion to the Second Division, but next year finished bottom, and were relegated back to the Fourth Division. In 1974 and 1975 the club finished 23rd out of 24 and in 1976 they finished bottom. In 1977 the club won only four games, and again finished bottom of the League with attendances falling well below the 1,000-mark. This poor run led to the club being voted out of the League in the summer of 1977, and were replaced by Wimbledon. The club dropped into the Northern Premier League, but failed to trouble the top teams, never finishing higher than 7th, before they were relegated to the NPL First Division in 1988. They continued to struggle, eventually being relegated to

the North West Counties League in 1998. However, the club managed to win the League at their first attempt (also their first ever championship). After a 2–0 defeat at Kidsgrove Athletic on 27 February 1999, manager Peter Hampton set the squad a challenge, win their last 14 games and they would win the league. Sure enough after winning the next 13 games Workington squared up to league leaders Mossley at Borough Park in front of a 2,281 spectators, a league record only beaten by the formation of F.C. United of Manchester. Workington ran out 2–1 winners with goals from Stuart Williamson and substitute Grant Holt. Workington became the first club to return to the NPL First Division at the first attempt.

As a result of a 7th place finish in 2004, the club moved up to the NPL’s Premier Division during the non-league restructuring. They then continued their upward movement by winning the first-ever NPL promotion play-offs (after finishing in 2nd place) to win promotion to the Conference North.

Following a mid-table finish in their first season in Conference North, the 2006–07 season saw Workington finish in third place and qualify for the promotion play-offs where they lost 2–1 against Hinckley United. After two mid table finishes the following seasons, Workington made the play offs again in 2009/10 this time going down 4–1 on aggregate to Alfreton Town in the semi final.

They finished midtable in Conference North for the next three seasons, but then in 2013-14 they finished bottom of the table, and were relegated to the EvoStik Premier.

They finished second last season behind champions FC United, but then lost in the play offs at home to Ilkeston.

Striker Graeme Armstrong has confounded everybody by returning for Quakers just a few months after he was hospitalised with an abdominal injury, and at Ashton United he took his league goals tally for the season to six when he bundled in the stoppage time winner.

That’s not a bad return considering that he missed the opening games of the season,

“I’m happy with the number of goals that I’ve scored, and to be honest in some ways it’s beyond my wildest dreams. Three or four months ago when I was in hospital recovering from the operation, I would have been pleased to be back playing, never mind scoring goals.

“There’s competition now up front, and obviously I’m not starting as many games now. When David Dowson got injured, we didn’t have any real striking options from the bench. He’s a massive player for us.

“But now that Lee Gaskell has come up to the club, and Adam Nowakowski and Dowsa will be back soon, then the competition will keep me and everybody else on our toes.”

Graeme believes that there’s plenty of talent in the Darlington squad.

“I’ve always thought that we’ve got a strong squad, just as

strong as the one I was in at Gateshead when we won the EvoStik League there.

“When we came into this league, we aimed to do well, and it goes without saying that after the win at Ashton United, that we didn’t expect to be top of the league after 15 games. It’s put us in a strong position, but now it’s a matter of staying there.

“We’ve had a tough start to the

season, not just in the standard of the opponents that we’ve faced, but also with the number of midweek away games that we’ve played. Those away games have stretched the squad at times, for example last week we played at Mickleover on the Saturday, and then at Ashton United on Tuesday. I think quite a few of us are pleased that we don’t have many more midweeks for the time being. Some of the lads didn’t get home until one in the morning from Ashton, and then had to be up early for work the next day.

“We seem to be have been unlucky with some of these midweek away games in the

amount of distance we’ve had to travel to places like Mickleover in Derbyshire, but that’s what we have to expect to in order to progress. The manager has used every player in the squad to accommodate those games.

“I played in the Premier Division for Whitby and Gateshead, and the standard of the league is tough. There are so many good players, such as ex

pros who are dropping down, or up and coming youngsters making their way up the ladder. If you don’t perform to a high standard, then you get beat. Marine, for example, were so well-organised that we found it difficult to break them down, so we

have to be on top of our game.”

Quakers go into tonight’s game against Workington in second place in the table.

“There are a lot of clubs chasing us, and very determined to climb above us. Marine beat us and they were 13th, and Ashton United led at half time, and they’re 15th Hopefully, one or two of them might get distracted by having an FA cup run, like Warrington did in the First Division North last season.

“Games aren’t going to get any easier. The quality of this league doesn’t stop at sixth position like the First Division North. It runs all the way through the league.”

Graeme Armstrong has made a stunning comeback from the abdominal injury he sustained in the play off final – he spoke to Ray Simpson

Last time we met

DECEMBER 28TH 1976 (FROM THE NORTHERN ECHO)

DARLINGTON 3 WORKINGTON 2

Three goals in the second half saved Darlington’s blushes on a snow-covered pitch at Feethams last night.

The win puts Quakers only two points behind the top four in the Fourth Division, but it was never a convincing display. Darlington trailed to a Martin Harris goal at half time, and not until Eddie Rowles fired in their third after 83 minutes did they look safe. Even then Workington hit back to narrow the gap to one goal in the last minute with a shot by Colin Williamson.

On a night when hardy fans braved freezing temperatures, Darlington struggled to find their feet against the League’s bottom side. At times they were too casual, but they managed to pick themselves up with three goals and as many narrow misses.

Bobby Noble was caught out when Harris broke free on the right and with goalkeeper Phil Owers out of position waiting for a back pass, Harris drove a 20 yard drive into the net.

The turning point came when Rowles went down in the penalty area after a tackle by Bobby Brown. Noble sent Mike Rogan the wrong way from the spot to equalise.

In the 65th minute Darlington went ahead when a Jimmy Cochrane cross was headed across goal by Ron Ferguson and Clive Nattress slid the ball in.

Darlington escaped again when Eamon Kavanagh struck the post after 79 minutes with a fine 20 yard drive. But within four minutes Colin Blant was caught flat footed, allowing Rowles to speed on to a Dennis Wann pass and slide the ball wide of Rogan for the third goal.

A minute from time Williamson slipped in Workington’s second as a casual defence allowed him to run on to a Bobby Owen pass.

APRIL 9TH 1977 (FROM THE NORTHERN ECHO)

WORKINGTON 2 DARLINGTON 3

Darlington kept their promise of no Easter goodwill by following Good Friday’s 3-1 win over Hartlepool with victory at Workington on Saturday. Both results drove more nails into both club’s re-election coffins.

But Quakers have been down amongst the dead men themselves too many times in recent years, and are unlikely to offer any twinges of remorse as they strive for the best League position for years.

The victories pushed Darlington into the top half of the table. Still recovering from the bruising encounter with Hartlepool, Darlington cruised into a two goal lead over a sorry Workington side, but almost let the points slip when the Reds pulled level with two quick goals.

Quakers still had enough composure to regain the lead and snuff any further aspirations of a home revival. Once again trainer-coach Len Walker, pressed into emergency service, played well in defence.

Eddie Rowles snapped up his 14th goal of the season from Ron Ferguson’s pass to give Darlington an early lead, and only a string of misses prevented Workington trailing by a much bigger margin at half time.

Former Darlington defender Colin Blant worked hard to keep his old club at bay, but he was helpless when his own full back, Mike Lang lofted a 20 yard pass wide of goalkeeper Mike Rogan for Quakers’ second goal after 52 minutes.

Hopes of a dramatic home recovery were raised when Eddie Prudham drove in two goals in as many minutes. Each time he pounced to punish shoddy work in the Darlington penalty area.

Stung into reprisal, Darlington saw Eric Young rattle the bar from 25 yards. And with twelve minutes left a Jimmy Cochrane corner was neatly headed on by Jimmy Seal and Derek Craig finished it off in powerful fashion to secure a deserved win.

HOW THE OTHERS ARE DOING

Blyth Spartans scored three times in the final 20 minutes as they came from a goal down to win 3-1 at Colwyn Bay and return to the top of the table. Zac Corbett scored five minutes before the break to put the Welsh side in front, but second half goals from Danny Parker, Michael Richardson and Alex Nicholson gave Spartans the three points. They lead the division by two points from second-placed Quakers, and have a game in hand.

Despite having indifferent form at home, Salford’s results on the road this season have been exemplary. They won 2-0 at fellow strong starters Sutton Coldfield on Saturday, with James Poole and Danny Webber getting the goals in the first half. It was the Ammies’ fourth straight win, and means they have away record of played seven, won seven.

Tonight’s opponents Workington made it ten league games unbeaten as they drew 1-1 with fourth placed Nantwich. Connor Tinnion gave the Cumbrians the lead on 12 minutes, but Joshua Gordon levelled just after the hour mark to give Nantwich their third consecutive draw.

Buxton lost ground on the play-off places as they lost 3-1 at Ilkeston. The Bucks took a first half lead through Bradley Barraclough. But Ilkeston, playing under new manager Andy Watson for the first time following Gavin Strachan’s decision to become Doncaster Rovers’ assistant manager, scored three times in the second half to move up to ninth in the table.

Jordan Bove scored a last minute equaliser to give Ramsbottom only their fourth point of the season, in a 1-1 draw with Mickleover. Jake Bennett had earlier given Mickleover a first half lead.

Tom McGowan’s 57th minute strike was enough for Stamford win 1-0 at Matlock Town, only their third win of the season. The victory moves Stamford up a place in the table.

They went above Whitby Town, who slipped to their fifth game without a win, as they lost 3-1 at Rushall Olympic. Massiah McDonald scored twice and Carl Palmer was also on the scoresheet as Rushall raced into a 3-0 lead. Lee Mason pulled one back for Whitby two minutes before the break.

Fourth-bottom Grantham went three games unbeaten following a 2-2 draw at home to Skelmersdale. Greg Smith gave the visitors a first half lead, only for the visitors to equalise through Gerard Kinsella. Lee Beeson’s spot kick just after the hour mark restored the home side’s advantage. But Ken Strickland’s leveller, also from the penalty spot, six minutes from time earned Skelmersdale a point.

Scott Spencer scored the only goal of the game after just four minutes to give Hyde a 1-0 victory over Barwell. The win moved Hyde into the top half of the table.

Ashton United came from a goal down to win 2-1 at Halesowen Town, and Marine have now lost just once in their last nine games after winning 1-0 at Frickley.

Simon Weatherill remembers the League Cup tie against West Ham United from October 24th 1960 in today’s Memory Match.

The 1960/61 season saw the introduction of a brand new competition into the English football calendar. The Football League Cup had been discussed for many years, and in 1960 it finally made its bow. The vast majority of league clubs now had floodlights and the League Cup would be played as a mid-week competition to enable them to make use of their new facilities. When the draw for the first round was made Darlington were paired with Crystal Palace, who were also in Division Four at the time, and had already done the double over the Quakers in the opening weeks of the season, winning 3-2 at Selhurst Park and then 1-0 at Feethams. Darlington gained some revenge by winning the League Cup tie 2-0 in front of a crowd of 9940 with goals by Joe Rayment and Ray Spencer. This set up a second round tie at home to First Division West Ham United on Monday October 24th.

After a poor start to the campaign (losing four out of the first five) Darlington had recovered and found some good form with a run of one defeat in ten games that had lifted them up to seventh place in the Division Four table. They’d had injury problems though and manager Eddie Carr was having to continually shuffle his starting eleven. His latest problem was at centre forward. Regular Dave Carr had torn his knee ligaments and was expected to be out of the side long term. Reg Worsnam had replaced Carr in

the team but after four games, manager Carr decided he wasn’t the answer and so he turned to a young reserve team player for the West Ham game. 21 year old Lance Robson had signed in the summer from Newcastle, principally as a wing half, but had played the last two reserve team games at centre forward, had scored in both games, and so would be given his chance against the Hammers. He was the only change from the side that had drawn 1-1 with Northampton on the previous Saturday. West Ham put out their strongest side possible, also making one change from their Saturday side. They’d beaten Preston 5-2, with a hat trick by Malcolm Musgrove, but were strengthened by the return of £30,000 signing Phil Woosnam at inside right. Woosnam had been away on international duty at the weekend, playing for Wales against Scotland.

A crowd of 17,057 (paying record gate receipts of £2,179 16s 9d) turned out at Feethams to see only the third ever game played under the new floodlights. (They’d first been used against Millwall on September 19 and then for the Palace cup-tie on October 12). They witnessed the Quakers make an incredible start to the game, taking the lead after only 20 seconds! West Ham kicked off, but very quickly lost possession. Left half Ray Spencer played the ball down the left wing to debutant Lance Robson who crossed

into the middle towards Bobby Baxter, who controlled the ball and then rolled it back into the path of the onrushing Spencer who crashed the ball into the net from the edge of the box. The Hammers were rattled and for a time looked like conceding again as the lively Darlington forwards pushed for a second. The visitors gradually played their way into the game with some slick passing and deservedly equalised after 23 minutes through Dave Dunmore, the former York and Spurs centre forward. He burst through the middle, chasing a long through ball, brushed aside two defenders and hit a rasping drive into the roof of the net. The visitors now had a spell on top with Phil Woosnam pulling the strings in midfield but the home defence stood firm, with full backs Brian Henderson and George Mulholland, and centre half Ron Greener having outstanding games. The Quakers fought back and ended the half on top again as half backs Ken Furphy and Ray Spencer regained some control in the midfield. An exciting half, played at breathtaking pace had finished all square at 1-1.

West Ham began the second half with an onslaught but their brief spell of pressure didn’t result in any clear-cut chances and home keeper Colin Tinsley was untroubled. The Quakers quickly settled and regained control of the game. Baxter went close

with a screamer across the face of goal, then was pulled back for offside when clean through. The home side took the lead that their play deserved in the 53rd minute. Left winger Keith Morton beat his full back John Bond and crossed towards Lance Robson, who headed the ball on to Joe Rayment at the far post. His first effort was saved by keeper Brian Rhodes but Rayment was first to the rebound and fired home. West Ham hit back and Bobby Moore very nearly equalised with a long range effort that Tinsley saved superbly.

Things got even better for the Quakers on 64 minutes when they scored a third goal. Lance Robson intercepted a back pass from full back John Lyall and rolled the ball into an empty net with Rhodes stranded. The goal capped a fine debut for Robson, who’d had a hand in the first two goals and scored the third himself. John Dick, the

pick of the Hammers forwards, reduced the arrears in the 68th minute, from a position that looked suspiciously offside, but there was never any danger of an equaliser. Darlington finished the game as much the stronger side and could easily have increased their margin of victory. Baxter hit the bar, and Spencer, Milner and Rayment all had goal bound shots blocked by an increasingly desperate visiting defence.

The 3-2 victory meant that the Quakers became one of the first giant killers of the new competition. It had been a real team effort. Although Spencer, Rayment and Robson grabbed the headlines by scoring the goals, every member of the team played their part in a well deserved victory. Their reward was a third round home tie with Bolton Wanderers, also of the First Division. A record crowd of 21,023 crammed into Feethams to see Bolton win the tie 2-1 to

end the Quakers’ interest in the competition.

The programme for the 60/61 season consisted of 12 pages, printed by Mawers, and cost 3d. Common to this period in the club’s history, the programme was heavy on adverts and light on reading material. The front cover was printed on coloured paper (green, blue, pink or yellow) and articles included Club Jottings, an action photo from a previous game, team line-ups, half time scoreboard and a list of fixtures and results.

Catching up

Lee Gaskell made his home debut after signing from Ramsbottom, but we drew a blank in a home defeat against the Merseysiders.

Gaskell partnered Nathan Cartman to make a pair of Golden Boot winners, but they didn’t really get the service they needed in an off day for the team.

Quakers nearly scored in the opening minute, when the ball was crossed to the far post where Rob Youhill fired into the side netting, and on 10 minutes Cartman turned quickly on the corner of the box and fired just over the top.

Marine were content to soak up the pressure and hit Quakers on the break.

But Marine replied with a curling free kick by Jamie Menagh that Darlington keeper Peter Jameson punched away and then he made a point blank save from Andy Nicholas.

Marine took the lead on 76 minutes when Alan White was adjudged to have pushed Menagh to the ground in the area, and Lloyd Ellams scored from the spot.

Quakers had penalty appeals turned down in stoppage time when Cartman’s shot appeared to be handled, but the ref waved them away.

Darlington v WorkingtonPage 32 Page 33Tuesday 20th October 2015

The name of Gary Coatsworth will live long in the memory of Darlington fans.

Gary was never a regular at Feethams, indeed he played more games for his next club, Leicester City, in a higher division than he did for Quakers in the Conference and the old Fourth Divisions. But his contribution was massive on a sunny day in Welling in May 1990, because it was his goal that put Quakers back into the Football League.

Gary came to Feethams after being released by Barnsley in the summer of 1989 as new manager Brian Little rebuilt the team. "I signed at the beginning of the season, but when I made my debut against Chorley when Les McJannet was suspended I broke my collarbone and was out for a few weeks.

"When I came back again into the team, I then picked up a knee injury against Yeovil, so I never really had a run in the team. My chance came when Jim Willis broke his leg at Telford, just four games from the end of the season, and Brian told me that I would be playing at Welling.

"It was a nerve-racking day, because we were a little frightened that we could still lose the title. If we lost, Barnet would have gone up instead of us."

The 2000 or so Darlington fans in east London will never forget the goal that mattered ten minutes from the end to break the 0-0 deadlock.

"Andy Toman had a free kick and he crossed it towards me on the far side of the box. I just went for it with my head, and the ball looped over the keeper into the net. It was a great feeling to score a goal like that, in front of all the Darlington fans."

Gary was also part of the squad which lifted the Fourth Division title the following season, and played twelve games that season, nine more than the Conference campaign. Then, a few months after taking the Leicester job, Brian Little returned to Feethams and bought him, just

as he was holding down a regular place in the Darlo team in the third division. A certain Sean Gregan was also showing plenty of promise at the time.

"I was surprised at the move, because I hadn't really been a regular at Darlington, because of the team's form, and my injuries. But Brian must have seen something! "

But it turned out to be an inspired transfer, because Gary played in three play off finals for Leicester, before having to retire from the professional game because of a knee injury.

He returned to the north east and played for Spennymoor in the EvoStik League, as well as for Sunderland Nissan in the Northern League.

THEY MADE

Brian was one of the new signings brought to the club by Lol Morgan at the start of season 65-66.

Brian made nearly 200 appearances for his previous club, Grimsby Town, between 1959 and 1965, and Morgan wanted him as a left back to strengthen Quakers’ promotion campaign. John Peverell played on the other side of the defence at right back.

However, the move didn’t quite go to plan. “I moved house to Darlington from Cleethorpes, but on the day we were due to move, the removal van didn’t show up. We had a young baby, who was only six months old, so Lol said we could stay at his house while it was all sorted out!”

Brian was an ever-present in the league that season, and played a key part in the shock 2-1 win at Blackpool in the third round of the Football League Cup on October 13th 1965.

“Blackpool had a full strength side out that night, and included players like Alan Ball and

Jimmy Armfield. I put in one crunching tackle on Alan Ball – he was expecting me to pull out of it. Jimmy Armfield was a real gentleman. After the game, he came into our dressing room and congratulated us. There was a big celebration that night.”

In those days, it wasn’t unusual to play teams home and away over holiday periods, and Quakers played Doncaster on Good Friday and Easter Saturday. They beat Doncaster at Feethams by 3-2, and the following day they travelled to Belle Vue.

“Lol was delayed on his way to the game in all the traffic, and missed the start of it. We got off to a really bad start and by the time he got there, we were 3-0 down. I think he believed that we would do all right until he arrived!” Quakers lost the game 6-3.

Brian only scored one goal that season, but it was a crucial one, the decider at Colchester six games from the end of the season. “Both teams were going well at the time – I think they were just above us in the league.

“We were pushed on the defensive for most of the game, but when we had a corner, I was caught a little bit upfield. Colchester broke to our end, and they had a shot which keeper Tony Moor saved. He threw it to me about midway inside our half, and I just ran towards their box and whacked the ball into the top corner.

“I was surprised at half time, because Lol gave me a ticking off for being so far upfield when I was expecting a few words of congratulation instead!”

QUAKERS WON 2-1 AFTER EXTRA-TIME, THE GOALS BOTH SCORED BY DEREK CRAIG.

Fancy your chances at being a referee? Here's our new quiz --1. It may be a ruse, but it’s a half-baked one. Fighting on the field of play is the most obvious form of violent conduct, whether it involves opponents or colleagues. So disallow the goal, show both players a red card, and restart with an indirect free-kick from where the fighting took place.

2. Deal with this in stages. First, using your communication system, ask the forth official to summon the stadium security officer to the technical area. At the next stoppage, speak to the officer and ask for extra stewarding on that line and for CCTV to be focussed on the area. If the problem continues, you have several options, including simply swapping the two assistants over to even abandoning the match. Either way, report everything that happened to the authorities.

3. You need to be certain here that the lowering of the bar definitely prevented a goal. If you are sure, send the keeper off for denying a goal, and restart with an indirect free-kick on the goal area line, parallel to the goalline. If not, show the keeper a yellow and restart in the same way.

Catching up

It was a great start to his Darlington career when Lee Gaskell scored a hat trick in his first away game.

The 30 year old scored all his goals in the second half, the best of them being a peach of a volley from an Adam Mitchell cross to make the score 3-0 at the time.

Quakers took the game to Mickleover straight from the off, and missed several chances before Nathan Cartman headed in a Terry Galbraith corner. Stephen Thompson fired the second before half time.

Then Gaskell destroyed Mickleover in the second half. A quickly-taken free kick by Leon Scott found Cartman who set up Gaskell for his first goal, then Gaskell executed a perfect scissor kick for his second, a goal that is a strong contender for goal of the season.

Sub Graeme Armstrong then laid the ball off for Gaskell to complete his hat trick, and give us a glimpse of the goalscoring heights he reached when he was at Ramsbottom.

MARK COOPER was sacked as Swindon Town manager following their 2-0 defeat at Millwall on Saturday.Cooper, 46, steered Swindon to the Sky Bet League One play-offs last season, but the defeat at the New Den has left them without a league win in six matches and one point above the relegation zone. The club said on its official Twitter site: “Swindon Town Football Club have (on Saturday) evening parted company with manager, Mark Cooper.”It has been reported that owner Lee Power will put himself in charge on a temporary basis.Cooper, whose squad have been hit by injuries to key players this season, chose not to take charge at Sheffield Wednesday in the summer and is understood to have also turned down Barnsley. He has worked with a limited budget since being appointed as Kevin McDonald’s successor at the County Ground in the summer of 2013 following a brief spell as assistant manager.Cooper steered Swindon to fourth place in League One last season

and after beating Sheffield United in the play-off semi-finals they lost out to Preston in the final. But the sale of key players such as Ben Gladwin and Massimo Luongo in the summer and a spate of injuries have seen the Robins win only three of their 12 league games this season.

KYLE LAFFERTY has said that he wants regular first team football ahead of Northern Ireland’s Euro 2016 campaign.Lafferty plundered seven goals in nine qualifying appearances to fire Michael O’Neill’s squad to a historic first appearance at the finals in France. Norwich manager Alex Neil, however, has used the 28-year-old sparingly in his Premier League plans since recovering from a pre-season knee injury, but the Scot insists Lafferty knows where he stands under him at Carrow Road.“Kyle knows exactly the situation he is in at the minute. There are no surprises there,” said Neil. “I have spoken to Kyle and all the players and come January if I believe maybe he is better suited

elsewhere then I will sit down with him and listen to where he feels his future lies. We will have that chat but potentially he could have broken into the team by then. It really depends what happens between now and then and a lot of that will determine what way we go. “Like anybody, players want to play and if they are not then maybe they are willing to look elsewhere, but I have to make sure I am looking after the best interests of Norwich City. If it means I need to keep him here to look after those then that will be the case.” Lafferty admitted last week it would be a wrench to leave the Canaries. “Norwich and the fans have been brilliant with me and I’d be sad to leave,” he said. “But I’ve got to think about myself, my family, my career. If it is time to leave I’ll take the opportunity. There’s no point in me sitting in the stands or playing for 15 minutes when there’s a massive tournament coming. I think I’ll give it until January then sit down with the manager.”

KYLE LAFFERTY

PLANS ARE WELL ADVANCED FOR THE LAUNCH OF RAY SIMPSON’S LATEST BOOK AND PLAYER REUNION ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 8TH.

PLAYER REUNION

Around 50 former players and officials have expressed their intentions of coming to the reunion, including Les McJannet, the full back in our 1990 and 1991 promotion campaigns, who is making the three hour journey up from the midlands. There are many others who immediately accepted the invitation to come: John Peverell, Kevan Smith, David Hodgson, Phil Brumwell, Glenn Naylor, Paul Campbell, Sam Russell, Jamie Chandler – the list goes on.It promises to be a fantastic day, so why not wear your old Darlo shirt and add to the nostalgia? The book, “Darlo’s on the Up, the story of six Darlington promotion campaigns” costs £12, and is an ideal Christmas present. There will be other fundraising activities going on that day, along with the chance to meet all those former players. Bring a camera, a pen, and some money.

I remember when this used to be a keenly contested fixture in Division Four of the Football League. Indeed, after Barrow had been voted out of the Football League in 1972 and at a time when Carlisle United were warmly embedded in the upper tiers of the Football League, Darlington were Workington’s nearest opponents for five years.

First of all I would like to thank everyone that contributed to Saturday’s collection for the ‘Smalls for All’ charity. Club volunteer, Stacey Fletcher, has added our contribution to the collection made by her work colleagues at Holiday Hypermarket and they will arrange for it to be despatched to “Smalls for All”.

DARLINGTON FC SUPPORTERS GROUP RENEWALS

The formal period for renewing your membership to Darlington FC Supporters Group has come to an end – although we are still getting the odd one joining and we would expect the number of Travel Club members to rise as the season continues and more decide to take a trip on a coach to one or more of the away matches.

The current membership stands at 412 and the breakdown is as follows:

375 - Full Members

33 - Travel Club (non voting)

4 - Junior (non voting)

Although we are now part-way, we would be very happy to accept any new applications for membership. The cost is £25 including the joining fee (for subsequent years, the renewal fee will be £20). An economic and convenient way of joining is to set up a standing order of only £2 per month.

DARLINGTON FC SUPPORTERS GROUP AGM

Anyone joining soon as a full member would be eligible to attend the first Annual General Meeting of Darlington FC Supporters Group,

which will take place at 7.45pm on Monday 2 November 2015 in The Studio (first floor), Dolphin Centre, Horse Market, Darlington DL1 5RP.

Amongst the matters to be discussed will be:

1. A presentation of the Supporters Group’s accounts;

2. Application of the surplus;

3. Appointment of Directors; and

4. Resolutions for Darlington Football Club Annual General Meeting.

Following the creation of Darlington FC Supporters Group, the current Directors are operating an interim board and under the Supporters Group’s rules they are required to stand down at the AGM and for a new board of directors to be elected. All of the nine retiring Board Directors are eligible for re-election should they wish to stand.

Darlington Football Club’s AGM will take place only three days after the Supporters Group’s AGM. At the Supporters Group’s AGM members will be asked to vote on the Football Club’s Resolutions and therefore provide a mandate for the representative of Darlington FC Supporters Group to vote at the Football Club’s AGM.

If by any chance any member has not received notification of the AGM either by post or email please email [email protected] or come and see us at the Fans Table in the bar.

Similarly, if anyone is considering joining Darlington FC Supporters Group and would like more information, come and see us at the Fans Table or visit our website at

http://www.darlingtonfcsupportersgroup.org

Enjoy the game and I wish everyone going back to Workington a safe journey back up the A66!

AFTER

“For Fans, For Football, For Ever”“For Fans, For Football, For ever”

1989-90 DARLINGTON 6 NORTHWICH VICTORIA 2FA cup 1st Round. Attendance 3,334.

After having to play in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup for the first time since the war, we entertained Northwich Victoria in the first round proper after beating Runcorn in the previous round. We had already beaten Northwich 4-0 in our second Conference league game and we were confident of progress.

The match opened controversially with a penalty to Quakers in the first minute, but Vics keeper saved David Corner’s spot kick. However after 12 minutes we took the lead through David Cork only for Northwich to level almost immediately. Les McJannet restored our lead again, but the Cheshire side equalised within minutes before David Corner put us ahead again just before half time. After the break, it was no contest with another header from David Corner, a fifth from Andy Toman and a tremendous individual effort from young Dale Anderson, on as a substitute, to complete a comprehensive victory.

Team: Prudhoe, McJannet, Gray, Willis, Smith, Corner, Hine (sub Anderson), Toman, Borthwick, Cork, Emson.

1979-80DARLINGTON 1 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN 1FA Cup 1st round Attendance 3,678

Huddersfield were top of the league when we played them at Feethams, and we lay fifth from bottom, but league positions counted for nothing. Huddersfield are former FA Cup winners, having beaten Preston in 1922 in the last pre-Wembley final. It was the Terriers who took the lead in the first half through Peter Hart, and they held the advantage at half time. The second half saw a much more determined performance from Darlington and this was rewarded with an equaliser from young Scottish striker John Stalker, his third goal in only six games for Quakers. There was no further scoring and so we had to settle for a trip to Leeds Road the following Tuesday for the replay, which we won with another goal from our hero of the tie, John Stalker.

Team: Owers, Nattress, Cochrane, Ball, Craig, Smith, McLean, Charlton, Stalker, Ellis (sub Walsh), Taylor.

1969-70DARLINGTON 0 BARNSLEY 0FA Cup 1st round Attendance 5,478.

We met Barnsley from the league above us for the second year in succession, the only difference being the round. This time we were drawn in the first round, whereas the previous year it was round two, when we had drawn 0-0 and then lost the replay to a single goal in extra time.

Barnsley were riding high in the third division having lost only twice all season, while we were wallowing in the lower reaches of the fourth.

After a goalless first half, both teams were determined not to face another replay, but their endeavours cancelled each other out and after 90 minutes neither side had scored. So it was a case of déjà vu and off to Oakwell again, and Barnsley won 2-0 with both goals scored in normal time.

Team: Moor, Peverell, Baxter, Horner, Albeson, Carr, Robinson, Robson, Felton, Hale, Sproates.

In each programme, we dig back into the archives at the popular Looking Back columns written by club historian Frank Tweddle over the years. This week, we look at his column from the Darlington v Southport FA Cup tie on October 30th 1999 when we won 2-1 with goals by Steve Tutill and Marco Gabbiadini. The crowd was 4,313.

DARLINGTON 5-0 ESH WINNING The Darlington U18’s continued their magnificent start to the season with a brilliant 5-0 win over Esh Winning at Norton. The result means that the young Quakers still have a perfect 100% record with seven wins from seven league matches.

Striker Danny Pigg got Darlington up and running early on with a cool finish from inside the area. It was 2-0 soon after when Caleb Padburarui broke forward from midfield and scored from just outside the box. Unfortunately for Padburarui that was not the end of his eventful evening because he was later sent off for a dangerous elbow.

Despite having ten men for the remainder of the contest, Darlington simply had too much for their struggling opponents and they strengthened their position in the second half. Adam Lee-Shields came off the bench and got a quickfire brace by testing the visitors’ back four in behind.

Lewis Walton added a fifth at the end with a fine free kick that put the gloss on a great performance. The Quakers went three points behind leaders Shildon with two games in hand. They face back-to-back league away trips to Esh Winning and Ryhope on October 24th and 31st respectively.

HOW THE OTHERS ARE DOING Ray Simpson has been checking on other

clubs in the non league football world

Former Scotland assistant-manager Andy Watson took charge of Ilkeston FC as interim manager after Gavin Strachan stood down at the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division club to become Darren Ferguson’s number two at Doncaster Rovers.

Strachan, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence and joined the Premier Division club in May as the successor to Kevin Wilson, worked with Sir Alex Ferguson’s son at Peterborough United before his second spell as Posh boss ended in February.

The 36-year-old’s departure from the New Manor Ground was announced late on Thursday afternoon after Ferguson’s expected appointment at the League One club was confirmed earlier in the day.

Officials at the Premier Division club also confirmed that they would be compensated for Strachan’s early exit after Donny approached them on Thursday for his services.

Ilkeston FC CEO Nigel Harrop wished their former manager well and thanked him for his services after admitting that he’d always known his stay was likely to be short considering his reputation.

Harrop said: “When you appoint someone with the potential, capability and calibre of Gavin, you know that one day the phone will ring, it just happens that it rang sooner than we expected. In the short time that he’s been here, Gavin has started to build a squad and back room staff which will stand Ilkeston FC in good stead and I can’t thank him enough for that.”

-------------------------------------------------------

Guisborough’s home game against Jarrow Roofing in the EBAC Northern League kicked off 30 minutes late – because the referee failed to turn up.

Guisborough officials were alarmed when the match referee failed to appear, and so they managed to contact him.

They were informed that he had forgotten about the game, and would be unable to officiate.

The club therefore enlisted the help of a local referee who was in the crowd, and the senior assistant referee took over in the middle.

Colwyn Bay parted company with their manager, Ashley Hoskyn, after they drew 0-0 at Ilkeston a fortnight ago.

At the point of his departure, the Welshmen were fifth from bottom of the EvoStik Premier Division, with just three wins in league and cup this season.

Head of recruitment, the vastly experienced Phil Staley also resigned.

-------------------------------------------------------

EvoStik Premier Division club Ramsbottom have appointed Garry Vaughan as their new manager.

Vaughan, was previously manager of Trafford, and guided them from the North West Counties League to the EvoStik Premier Division. Wayne Goodison has been appointed as his number two, with Phil Edghill, who was the assistant to previous boss Jon Robinson, also part of the management team.

-------------------------------------------------------

Crowds at ENL Second Division club South Shields have gone past the thousand mark.

A huge crowd of 1,045 saw Shields beat Ryton and Crawcrook 4-0 to put them second in the table. Shields recently signed former Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder Julio Arca, and their gates have also helped by their return to the town after playing at Peterlee for three seasons.

-------------------------------------------------------

Frickley Athletic have congratulated striker Zeph Thomas and defender Jameel Ible on their latest international call-ups.

The Blues announced on Friday that duo had been selected to represent St Kitts-Nevis in international friendlies against Andorra on Thursday 12 November and then against Estonia in Tallinn on Tuesday 17 November.

In a statement congratulating the pair, officials of the EvoStik Premier club said they are due to link up with the St Kitts-Nevis squad on Monday 9 November and return to the UK on Thursday 19 November.

Central defender Ible, 21, originally arrived on loan from Guiseley before signing for manager Karl Rose on non-contract terms.

Striker Thomas, 25, kicked off his career at Rotherham United before moving on to Ilkeston, Emley, Harrogate Town, Rossington, Stocksbridge PS, Mickleover Sports, Goole and Boston United as well as Montegnee in Belgium and Thunder Bay Chill in Canada.
