Dartford Primary Academy Dartford Primary Academy English Curriculum (Year 1 – 6) This long term planning ensures: Full coverage of the key skills in the Primary National Curriculum. Across their school career, children at Dartford Primary Academy are progressively taught the key features of different genres. A topic based approach allows for a variety of reading, writing and the spoken language outcomes. Through a text stimulus, there is an enhanced opportunity to focus on the ‘pleasure of reading’ element of the curriculum and children have the opportunity to develop their fluency, accuracy, independence and understanding of a range of texts. Children are given the opportunity to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken and written language. Pupils are motivated and inspired to write independently so that they see themselves as writers. Discussion, drama, role-play, hot seating and talk for writing are an effective part of the writing process. Children are encouraged to develop a bank of vocabulary from what they read and through speaking and listening opportunities. Grammar, punctuation and spelling can be taught discretely or through cross curricular opportunities to allow children to develop their skills and use these in purposeful contexts. SMSC is at the heart of all English learning.
