Summer School 2010 will be somethingof a poignant turning point. This willbe the last year in which the College ofArts occupies the premises at Dartington, before moving to Falmouth. It will alsobe my twenty-sixth and final yearas Artistic Director. I hope that manyold friends will be with us for whatpromises to be a quite momentous year!

The past quarter century has seenmany changes, as indeed Dartingtonis a constantly evolving place. WhenI arrived, the Summer School was aseparate and independent company–now it is a fully integrated partof the Dartington Hall Trust. Despiteinevitable changes, the Trusteeshave given absolute assurance thatthe Summer School will remaina key element of the ongoing artsprovision on the estate.

Many of the artists featured in thepages which follow have been crucialto the development of the SummerSchool – and indeed tomusical lifein the UK and beyond. They formpart of a unique community. Theycome for a fraction of their usualfees – teaching and performingwithan intensitymade possible by theconvivial atmosphere that is sospecial to Dartington.

Many are committed to the futureof this ‘pocket paradise’, but sadlyDiegoMasson has decided torelinquish his role at the SummerSchool. His work, over some twenty-eight years, in building up theFestival Orchestra and nurturing aremarkable stream of conductingtalent, is exceptional by anystandards. His concerts in 2010 willbe a truly valedictory experience.

It has been a privilege to work withsomany extraordinary people –both the artists who come to lead, and those who come to participatein this quite intoxicating gathering.I hope that youwill findmuch toengage with in this Summer Schoolprogramme. We look forwardto welcoming you at Dartingtonfor the 2010 Summer School.

The first session of the day featurestwo of Dartington’s great institutions:

>Main ChoirThe Choir is the perfect morning wake-up call for those whowant to raise their voices in song and learn a major workfrom scratch in less than a week. The choir is un-auditionedand open to all, and the course culminates in a publicperformance with orchestra in Dartington’s historic GreatHall. Long-standing tradition has it that the Summer SchoolChoir is directed by distinguished conductors – Sir ColinDavis, Sir Mark Elder, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Jane Glover,Richard Hickox, Sir Charles Mackerras, Sir Roger Norrington,Andrew Parrott and Sir Simon Rattle, have all wielded thebaton of the Summer School choir in the past.

> Orchestral WorkshopLike the choir, the Orchestral Workshop is un-auditionedand is open to all instruments and abilities; similarly,it also tackles a new work each week. The OrchestralWorkshop extends a warm welcome to everyone, andis perfect for those who fancy anything from Biberto Bruckner for breakfast.

Summer School participants spendtheir days studying, and attendperformances in the evening.

Week oneStriggio in sixty parts! Lost for 400 years, recently discovered and premiered at theProms, this remarkable work will be thecentrepiece of the choral repertoire forweek1. This vast polychoral programme, accompanied by other split-choir piecesby Scheidt and the Gabrielis using earlybrass, viols and recorders, will be led byRobert Hollingworth and I Fagiolini. ColinTilney returns for Bach’s ‘48’ on clavichord, and wewelcome back the Dufay Collective.

It’s not all early music – JohnWoolrichleads a composition course in new workfor ‘period instruments’, while MartinoTirimo will be giving us part of his Chopincycle. Keith Tippett and Lewis Riley, asever, lead the Jazz. There will be gamelanfor all, and we also hope to include anew work by Orlando Gough, for all to joinin, and a programme of Indian Music –watch the web for updates.

ONEWEEK COURSES

ChoirDirector Robert HollingworthAlessandro Striggio Missa sopra ‘Ecco sì beato giorno’(c.1566), for five choirs in 40 and 60 parts. Please see our website and music lists for further details. The choir will also explore polychoral works by the Gabrielisand Samuel Scheidt.

Vocal EnsemblesDirectors I FagioliniGroups will explore a wide selection of Renaissance repertoire, both secular and sacred. Sight-reading skills are obviouslyimportant, but the core repertoire will be available in advanceto learn. We generally have too many sopranos and notenough tenors and basses. A way around this is to comein a pre-formed group and to prepare some works yourself(your own choice or from the course list) so you can receivecoaching and not just help in reading. But individuals arewelcome too, of course!

Chamber MusicCoordinator Rhiannon Evanswith the Barbirolli QuartetThe chamber music course will offer one formally organisedsession each day. Each participant will be assigned to agroup in advance, and suitable repertoire chosen dependingon numbers and standards. Any pre-formed groups arewelcome to bring their own repertoire. Groups can gettogether informally at other times (when some coachingmay also be available). If you wish to take part in this course, please complete the

We rehearse music by masterssuch as Eric Coates and Leroy Anderson, operetta favouritesand overtures, and music by the great composers showingtheir lighter side, not forgetting the classic songs of thegreat 20th century popular tunesmiths George Gershwin,Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers,Leonard Bernstein andmanymore. From these wemake a selection for our three events: theTea-Dance on the lawn (weather permitting) including thejive competition and overwhelmingly popular Gay Gordons;the Dartington Festival Light Orchestra concert; and Friday’sclosing event of the entire Summer School, the GrandViennese Ball. There are usually enough players to allowyou to drop out and try the waltz or polka for yourselves. There will almost certainly be an opportunity for you toform your own ensembles – so bring somemusic too. This course is an opportunity to play a lot of differentstyles of music alongside the most unintimidating teamof professionals you are ever likely to meet. Have nofear: this orchestra accommodates all ages and abilities(and nearly all instruments!).

The Summer School grew out of the first EdinburghFestival in 1947, an event launched by John Christie ofGlyndebourne as ameans of post-war cultural healing, and as a platform for his operatic endeavour. “... but whereis the teaching?” asked several of the major artists, mostnotably Artur Schnabel. The Salzburg Festival was to havea Summer School for Art led by Oskar Kokoschka – couldnot Edinburgh have something similar for music? TheFestival’s director Rudolf Byng had toomuch on his plate, but Schnabel’s sometime student William Glock suggestedthat a Summer School for Music could be established inone of the English boarding schools – and so it came topass that the event was launched in 1948 at Bryanston.Britain was remote from themusical and cultural thrustof the European and Americanmainstream, and theSummer School quickly became ameeting ground forthose hungry to explore a newmusical landscape – notonly in terms of contemporarymusic, but also areas ofearly music that had hitherto been largely neglected.Legendary figures such as Hindemith, Enescu, Copland,Carter and Boulanger helped to underscore a vitalcommitment to composition from the outset. Meanwhile,at Dartington the emergent Amadeus String Quartet wasbeing nurtured in the context of musical exploration led byImogen Holst. Both she and the quartet were immediatelya part of the Summer School at Bryanston and helped topave the way for its move to Dartington five years later, aninitiative led by Peter Cox, as Dartington’s Arts Administrator, who was also to become the founding Principal of the Collegeof Arts. Aided by John Amis as administrator and Bea Mussonas registrar, the Summer School was directed byWilliamGlock for more than thirty years, and for much of that timeGlock ran it in tandemwith the BBC Proms. Dartington wasaffectionately referred to in the BBCmusic department as‘the annexe’. The BBC was a useful resource and ‘powerbase’from which Glock could inform and influence Summer Schoolplanning; indeed a number of BBC stalwarts would becomeregular Summer School tutors, notably Hans Keller.

A family of regular artists emerged – Vlado Perlemuter andGeorge Malcolm, who gave title to ‘the Trogs’, the team ofhelpers who stagemanage the complex weave of coursesand concerts, and look after artists. Many Trogs who generallycome from student backgrounds, go on to become leadersin the wider cultural world. Every year has its high points, but1957 was a particular highpoint, with the visit of Stravinskyand a composition class that included Peter Maxwell Davies,Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr, HughWood, RichardRodney Bennett and Cornelius Cardew as students. Themid-fifties are often recalled as the Italian Years with Luigi Nono,Bruno Maderna and Luciano Berio teaching. Then also, fondDutchmemories – with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, and the Dutch connection – remain vibrant with thoseparticipating in early music.William Glock was succeeded as Artistic Director by PeterMaxwell Davies, who was in charge for five years – with hisensemble ‘The Fires of London’ verymuch in residence. In1985, Gavin Henderson took over running the Summer Schoolin tandemwith the Brighton Festival, the Trinity College ofMusic and now The Central School of Speech and Drama.Gavin changed the title from Summer School of Music toDartington International Summer School, reflecting theprogramming of other disciplines – dance, film and theatre –but all with amusical connection. He extended the period tofive weeks, increased the range of composition courses andgreatly enhanced the programme of early music. He instatedthe advanced opera course, brought in Keith Tippett to directa Jazz course, and then Herbie Flowers to explore aspectsof Rock and song writing with the RockShop. Orchestralprovision has lead to the consolidation of the FestivalOrchestra for three weeks and of period instrument workin the Baroque Orchestra for the first two weeks. Whilepreviously the choir was regularly accompanied by twopianos, Henderson has ensured that it always works withorchestra. The bedrock of the Summer School remains thechoir, the instrumental masterclasses and workshops, thecomposition courses and the widemix of chamber music.
