Darwin Parents Association (DPA) General Meeting: November 03, 2015 Darwin School Library Attendance: 14 people Quorum: Yes CALL TO ORDER: 6:37pm Barbara Anderson (DPA Chairperson), Mrs. Karen Haluschak (Darwin Principal), Mrs. Dutchak (Darwin teacher) were present at the meeting. PROPOSED AGENDA: MOTION – Lisa Clark made a motion to approve the Proposed Agenda. “Old Business” review also added to the Agenda. Motion Seconded – by Colleen Booth. Motion Passed GENERAL MEETING MINUTES: MOTION – Susan Seipp made a motion to approve the September 23, 2015 General Meeting minutes. Motion Seconded by Lori Oxenforth. Motion Passed. CORRESPONDENCE: (Provided by Valerie Chan) Correspondence received. o Confirmation letter from Starbucks (St. Anne’s) to donate coffee to DPA meetings this school year. o Banking and fundraising paperwork. o Request for a Coordinator for the Block Parent Program. o Continued discussion from the LRSD meeting – looking for attendees. TREASURER’S REPORT: (Provided by Marcia Petterson) With a deposit to be made tomorrow (November 4 th , 2105), the DPA account will have $3,220.74. Money was received for Darwin Wear, Movie night and $10 from the Darwin BBQ. Balance sheet shown in Attachment A.

    TEACHERS’UPDATE:(ProvidedbyLisaDutchak,Grade5/6teacher)Ithasbeenabusycoupleofmonthsforthegrade5/6’s.ThestudentsareworkingonInspiredonArtwithafocusonVincentVanGogh.Theyhaveproducedcharcoalpencilsketchesofclassmates,landscapewatercoloursoutsidetheschool,aswellasstilllife’sofboots.Thestudentsarecompletingahealthunitaboutbullyingandbeingrespectful.Theyhaveaclassroomcontract.Itisaplacewherekidsaresafeintheclassroom.Kidshavebeenshowingmoreempathytowardsartistsastheylearnedmoreaboutthem.Thisleanedwellintothehealthunit.Inthewritingworkshopprogramthekidsarewritingsolidparagraphswhichwillbepresentedatthefallconferences.October26thwas“NationalLibraryDay”.Theentireschoolmetinthegymandbuddiedwithreadingbuddiesandmademonsterbookmarks.Recentlythekidshadorangeandblackday.Theyalsoplanned“hauntedhallways”.Thekidsbroughttheirowndecorations.Theideawasthrownouttothekidsandtheybasicallytookitfromthere.Wewereabletoguidethemintheirthinkingwithrespecttothelogisticsandsetup,andthenweencouragedthemtokeepgoingtocompletion.Thekidsformedtheirowngroupsandworkedcollaborativelywithinthosegroups,andthatwaseveniftheteamwasn’tperfect.Thekidshadplanned“centres”suchasaMonstermashdance,usingflashlights,doingawordsearchonthecomputer,andmummymaking.Wearecurrentwritingreportcards.Inmathclasstheyarecompletingnumbersense.Weareexplainingmodeling,withlotsofexamplesandpracticinginclass.Anyhomeworkrequiredisbasedaroundpracticingorfinishing.Thekidsarealsolearningmoreaboutdecimalsandfractions.

    ACTIONITEM:AdministratortodetermineinadvancewhichteacherswillbepresentateachDPAmeeting.Gradeschoolcombinedwithteacherswithspecialities(gym,resource,band,industrialarts)areencouraged.
