ACTIONITEM:SelectanothersuitableeventnightinDecember?Movienightoranothertheme?
TEACHERS’UPDATE:(ProvidedbyLisaDutchak,Grade5/6teacher)Ithasbeenabusycoupleofmonthsforthegrade5/6’s.ThestudentsareworkingonInspiredonArtwithafocusonVincentVanGogh.Theyhaveproducedcharcoalpencilsketchesofclassmates,landscapewatercoloursoutsidetheschool,aswellasstilllife’sofboots.Thestudentsarecompletingahealthunitaboutbullyingandbeingrespectful.Theyhaveaclassroomcontract.Itisaplacewherekidsaresafeintheclassroom.Kidshavebeenshowingmoreempathytowardsartistsastheylearnedmoreaboutthem.Thisleanedwellintothehealthunit.Inthewritingworkshopprogramthekidsarewritingsolidparagraphswhichwillbepresentedatthefallconferences.October26thwas“NationalLibraryDay”.Theentireschoolmetinthegymandbuddiedwithreadingbuddiesandmademonsterbookmarks.Recentlythekidshadorangeandblackday.Theyalsoplanned“hauntedhallways”.Thekidsbroughttheirowndecorations.Theideawasthrownouttothekidsandtheybasicallytookitfromthere.Wewereabletoguidethemintheirthinkingwithrespecttothelogisticsandsetup,andthenweencouragedthemtokeepgoingtocompletion.Thekidsformedtheirowngroupsandworkedcollaborativelywithinthosegroups,andthatwaseveniftheteamwasn’tperfect.Thekidshadplanned“centres”suchasaMonstermashdance,usingflashlights,doingawordsearchonthecomputer,andmummymaking.Wearecurrentwritingreportcards.Inmathclasstheyarecompletingnumbersense.Weareexplainingmodeling,withlotsofexamplesandpracticinginclass.Anyhomeworkrequiredisbasedaroundpracticingorfinishing.Thekidsarealsolearningmoreaboutdecimalsandfractions.
ACTIONITEM:AdministratortodetermineinadvancewhichteacherswillbepresentateachDPAmeeting.Gradeschoolcombinedwithteacherswithspecialities(gym,resource,band,industrialarts)areencouraged.

• Suggestionof“Hotlunch”events:PreliminaryresearchindicatedthattheDPAcanmakemoneythrough“MunchaLunch”program.Wemustconsidertheannualcostforthesoftwareaswellastheinitialsetupasitrequiresasignificanttimecommitment.Italsorequiresvendorresearchandlotsofdataentryintotheprogram.Questionsariseonwhowillmanagetheprocessandhowmanystudentswouldactuallyuseit?Isthereinterestindoingitonabiweeklybasis?PerhapsfunlunchescanbehostedbythegradeschoolchildrenwithDPAassistance.
