4 Introduction

Truly an icon. There’s just no getting around it. The Volkswagen Golf is a true

automotive icon, a classic car in every sense. At Volkswagen we

never rest on our laurels and we’ve been improving the Golf with

every model since its introduction to the market. In that time, the

Golf has established itself as one of the world’s great cars, and our

latest models proudly combine their long heritage with the very

latest in automotive technology and safety features.

On the inside, the carefully-designed ergonomics and the quiet,

comfortable ride makes driving the Golf a respite from the

daily grind.

On the outside, precision is evident in the Golf’s simple yet

dynamic curves. Pleasing to the eye, they also help the Golf slip

through the air with great aerodynamic effi ciency.

Work and play, or home and away: with nine models to choose

from, there’s a Golf to suit your needs – whatever they may be.

For comfort and convenience, look no further than the 77TSI; or

with its host of in-car technologies, the 90TSI Trendline is ready

for anything. The 118TSI Comfortline boasts an award-winning

engine that’s both powerful and effi cient, while the 103TDI

Comfortline features a diesel engine for fuel effi ciency and extra

torque. And for even more excitement and athleticism, the Golf

GTD, GTI and Golf R will be right up your street.

Whatever you choose and whether you opt for TSI (petrol) or TDI

(diesel) technology, you can rely on exceptional performance,

power and fuel consumption across the board.

But of course, the Golf doesn’t just look good, feel great and drive

well. Safety is paramount, which is why seven airbags and safety

optimised front head restraints come as standard on all variants,

and a fl eet of innovative, high-tech features unite to give you

complete confi dence when you most need it.

Safe and secure it may be, but the Golf is serious fun too.

Pleasure seekers won’t be able to resist its charisma, smooth

handling and high-tech in-car features, including Bluetooth®

phone connectivity to keep you in the loop while on the move

(standard on all models except the 77TSI and BlueMotion).

But don’t just take our word for it – the Golf has won numerous

awards around the globe throughout its life, proving its European

design and reliability are a winning combination.

Style and value.

The 90TSI Trendline is the perfect driving companion. Reliable,

entertaining and quiet when you need some downtime. And it

doesn’t hurt that it looks this good too.

Its value is enhanced by active and passive safety features, design

and superior engine technology. On the entertainment front, it’s

to its single-charged 1.4 litre TSI engine, which is turbo-charged to

boost both performance and fuel effi ciency.

If you enjoy listening to music as you drive, you’ll love the RCD310

entertainment system. Featuring MP3 compatibility and the ability

your attention just where it needs to be – on the road ahead.

So sit back and enjoy the ride, safe in the knowledge that with

cruise control as standard you can soak up the atmosphere while

effectively managing your speed on your next open road adventure

– or commute to the offi ce. Plus Hill Start Assist (HSA) will help

avoid any potential roll backs on those steep inclines.

Other safety features guaranteed to make your life easier include

ABS with Brake Assist, Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP),

Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) traction control and seven airbags.

Available as a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG transmission,

whichever 90TSI Trendline you opt for, you can be sure of very low

118TSI Comfortline.

Star performer.

The 118TSI Comfortline is a car built to appeal to drivers who enjoy

a car with plenty of performance as well as plenty of comfort.

With a twin-charged 1.4 litre TSI engine delivering 118kW of power

and 240Nm of torque, it’s very much a driver’s car.

The Comfortline strikes a near-perfect balance between the

extremes, offering a relaxing yet spirited experience to driver and

passengers alike. Dual-zone air conditioning, adjustable seats

and a quiet, carefully-sculpted cabin coccoon the Comfortline’s

occupants regardless of whether the journey is to the corner shops

or the far reaches.

The Volkswagen 1.4 litre Twincharger – with turbocharger and

supercharger – engine was awarded International Engine of the

Year 2010 and also topped the 1.0 litre to 1.4 litre category. Best of all,

it doesn’t do so at the cost of the environment, as it returns a frugal

6.2L/100km fuel consumption fi gure (7-speed DSG, as per Australian

Design Rule (ADR) 81/02). So you can enjoy your driving and still

save at the petrol pump.

Working in conjunction with the 118TSI Comfortline’s engine your

choice of a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG transmission, it delivers

sharp performance and an engaging drive.

You’ll also enjoy the security offered by a range of key safety

and technology features, including seven airbags, Electronic

Stabilisation Program, ABS brakes with Brake Assist, Electronic

Differential Lock and Anti-Slip Regulation traction control.

103TDI Comfortline and 103TDI Comfortline with BlueMotion Technology.

Eco-nomic marvel.

If you like driving and also want to minimise your fuel

consumption, then the 103TDI Comfortline, or the 103TDI

Comfortline with BlueMotion Technology, is the Golf for you.

Both models are powered by a 2.0 litre TDI engine that delivers

103kW of power and a massive 320Nm of torque – so there are no

compromises when it comes to the driving experience.

The 103TDI Comfortline offers a refi ned ride. The interior is

luxurious, with plenty of storage space, ergonomically designed

and located controls, fl owing lines and comfortable, supportive

seats. It’ll also support you at the fuel bowser, with a combined fuel

consumption fi gure of only 5.6L/100km*.

The 103TDI Comfortline with BlueMotion Technology includes

a number of technologies to further improve fuel effi ciency.

The Start/Stop system can automatically switch off the engine

when waiting in traffi c – and re-start it again when it’s time to get

moving, while the Brake Energy Recuperation system captures

some of the energy generated while coasting and braking and

utilizes it to charge the battery. The result? Lower emissions and

a miserly fuel consumption (combined) of just 5.3L/100km* – and

a saving of 1L/100 km on the urban cycle (compared to the regular

103TDI Comfortline model).

On the outside of both models you’ll see the same classic Golf

lines, with 16" Cleveland alloy wheels and the Golf’s classic,

confi dent stance. The drive is exactly what you’d expect from

a Golf – comfortable, relaxing and fuss-free, but with plenty of

performance lurking under the bonnet should the need arise for

some quick progress or sharp responses.

18 Golf GTD

Golf GTD.

Unique sports-tourer.

The GTD is a truly special car. Combining the torque and

tractability of its diesel engine with the sporting refi nements

of other high-specifi cation models, this is a sporty Golf with

a difference.

With 125kW of power and an impressive 350Nm of torque from

its turbocharged engine, the GTD is defi nitely not a car that’ll

be left standing still. It’s got diesel driveability, suspension and

dynamics tuned for a more spirited approach to the road, and

buckets of style.

The badge, fog lights and Seattle alloy wheels are subtle cues from

the outside; on the inside you’ll fi nd a leather-bound multifunction

steering wheel, sports seats upholstered in our unique ‘Jacky’

fabric, gearshift paddles for DSG models and a chrome-plated

gearshift knob.

The Golf GTD has been engineered with just one goal in mind:

maximum driving pleasure. And on this count, it delivers.

From the moment you turn the ignition key you can tell it’s a

diesel like no other. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.1

seconds but still manages to return fuel fi gures of 5.5L per 100km*

(combined). Its tightly-tuned handling and generous engine

performance, mated to a 6-speed transmission (manual or DSG)

and low-profi le tyres, will keep you grinning from ear to ear – and

from the open road to the fuel bowser.

Golf GTI.

The original hot hatch.

It’s a classic within a classic. The Golf GTI is one of the

automotive world’s great sports cars and this latest variant

is a proud successor to that tradition. The tread linking all

these models – apart from the badge itself – is great handling,

muscular performance and understated good looks.

It all starts at the front end. The now-iconic black honeycomb

grille, red trim strips and GTI badge immediately set this car

apart. Alloy wheels – 17” Denver or optional 18” Detroit models

– are nothing short of a statement of intent, while from the rear,

the diffuser, chrome tailpipes and GTI badge leave the cars

you’ve passed in no doubt as to what you’re driving.

Sitting in the cockpit is an equally gripping experience.

The leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel fi ts

your hand like a glove and all controls fall naturally, and

unobtrusively, to hand.

Once you’re on the road, you’ll fi nd that the GTI delivers a

pure dose of driving pleasure. The TSI engine takes you from

0 to 100km/h in just 6.9 seconds and a raft of performance

and safety technologies work on concert to ensure your drive

is as safe as it is breathtaking. Seven airbags, Electronic

Stabilisation Program, ABS brakes with Brake Assist, Electronic

Differential Lock and Anti-Slip Regulation traction control will

give you confi dence to attack the curves and enjoy the ride.

22 Golf R

Golf R.

Making your dreams come true.

The most powerful Golf released in Australia, the Golf R is a

no-compromise car for those who demand only the highest

specifi cations of performance and distinctive style.

Step inside and settle into the sports seats and not only will you

see, but you’ll also feel the quality. The seats are expertly tailored

in a combination of Kyalami black cloth and San Remo microfi bre.

The interior features a subtle, stylish Silver Lane decorative

trim throughout. The steering wheel blends aesthetics with the

practical, in the form of gloss black inserts and (on DSG models)

gearshift paddles. And the dual zone automatic climate control

air conditioning will ensure you keep your cool whatever the

weatherman has in store.

Outside, it’s a similarly eye-catching story. It’s clear to see the

class-leading build in the Golf R’s bold design, with the gloss black

R-specifi c radiator grille complete with R badge, exterior mirrors

and brake callipers.

But of course, it’s not just all about the looks. The Golf R’s 2.0 litre

TSI petrol engine is turbocharged and features direct injection

technology, taking you from 0 to 100km/h in 5.7 seconds*. Its 188kW

of power and impressive 330Nm of torque make for a dynamic

drive, yet it still fulfi lls the Euro 5 emissions standards. And

although it’s the most powerful Golf to be released in Australia,

its 4MOTION® all-wheel drive system gives you the best possible

traction, no matter the weather, speed or road condition.

All this to be enjoyed to the beat of your choosing, played via the

RCD510 6-disc CD sound system with 6.5" touchscreen display and

eight speakers.

Safety-wise, Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP), ABS brakes

with Brake Assist, Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Anti-Slip

Regulation (ASR) traction control and no less than seven airbags

complete the exceptional Golf R package.

Exterior.

Modern classic.

It’s a shape known the world over. Classic, sophisticated, inspiring

– the Golf is simply unmistakable. It epitomises the Volkswagen

approach to automotive design; fi rst of all, it does its job; second of

all, it’s aesthetically pleasing; and thirdly, it identifi es itself as part

of the Volkswagen family.

Every generation of the Golf has further optimised its design and

this model is no different. From aerodynamics to lights and from

mirrors to windows, every angle, every component and every

decision has been carefully considered and precisely executed.

Exterior 25

01. Overall exterior designThe exterior of a car should do a couple of things.

Most importantly, it should help the vehicle to cut through the

air and help provide stability in all external conditions – road,

weather and environmental. It should also make a strong design

statement and locate the vehicle within a continuum of previous

models and marque stablemates. The Golf does all this with

aplomb, from the sleek grille to the integrated bumpers and from

the aerodynamic mirrors to the pillar locations. No matter which

way you look at it, the Golf is a car that appeals to the eye.

02. Sunroof ●

Let the sun shine in! There’s no doubt that a sunroof makes a

great addition to any car, and the Golf’s optional version is no

exception. Electrically controlled, it’s tilt and slide adjustable,

with an internal sunblind for maximum convenience. So you

can enjoy fresh air and natural light night and day, summer and

winter alike.

03. Rear view camera integrated in badge ●

The Golf’s optional rear view camera – cleverly integrated into

the badge – makes manoeuvring in tight spaces, not to mention

reversing, a much easier and much less stressful process.

It provides a clear view on the dashboard-mounted display

and further boosts the Golf’s safety package.

04. Daytime driving lightsA car can never be too visible. The Golf’s daytime driving

lights help other road users to see it coming from near and far.

Mounted within the main headlight assembly and protected by

a polycarbonate lens, they’re another great addition to the Golf’s

feature set.

01. RNS510 Satellite Navigation ●

The RNS510 Satellite Navigation System uses a touchscreen and

an intuitive user interface to provide real-time location and

navigation information on its bright, hi-res display. The fast

processor provides rapid updates and accurate navigation,

and the system includes a DVD drive and 30GB hard drive to

handle mapping data and a range of music fi les.

02. Multi-Function Display (MFD) The MFD is standard on the 77TSI and is a screen-operated

multi-function display system that is used to display useful

vehicle information (like fuel range or outside temperature)

and trip information (like average speed, current speed and

speed warnings). The MFD Plus is standard on all other models

and allows you to also display information from other systems

(radio, navigation, phone etc.) and customise lighting and

security settings.

03. Bluetooth® (not pictured)

Built-in Bluetooth® (in all models bar the 77TSI and BlueMotion)

means your phone can be operated hands-free while you

drive. So you can make and receive calls without diverting

your attention from the road. It also allows you to wirelessly

stream audio content from your phone to the car’s audio

system. Better still, it can be operated from the MFD Plus and

you can even access your phone book. There is a variety of

Genuine Bluetooth® accessories available for the Golf 77TSI and

BlueMotion models.

04. Media Device Interface (MDI)This convenient feature allows you to connect your USB media

player, storage device or iPod®* to the Golf’s audio system. The

device may then be controlled by the in-dash system rather than

its own interface, making operation safer and easier. Best of all,

the MDI connection will charge your portable device up while

it’s connected, (standard on Comfortline models and above).

Interior.

Beauty within.

Beauty, of course, is more than skin deep. The Golf’s interior

conveys a feeling of quality above all else. The steering wheel

has been carefully sculpted, for optimum comfort and control.

The driver’s seat is height adjustable and will keep you comfortable

(and ergonomically supported) every time you go for a drive.

The design is also easy on the eye; the lines fl ow smoothly from

one element to another and all controls, indicators, information

displays and storage spaces are logically located and easy to access.

Material design has also received careful thought, with the end

result that every surface is durable, easy to clean and highly tactile.

Technology.

Built for the future.

To build its cars, Volkswagen draws on a proud heritage of

technological innovation and world-class engineering. It expresses

itself in subtle ways; the easy integration of devices and systems;

the effortless driving and smooth performance; and the seamless

marriage of mechanical, electronic and computerised components.

All of which should be largely invisible to you, the driver.

Technology is a tool to help make your drive safer, easier or more

enjoyable, not an end in itself. Every technology in the Golf has a

specifi c purpose and will play its part in helping you get on with

your busy life.

28 Technology

01. TSI engineVolkswagen’s TSI technology includes turbo-charged petrol

engines with direct injection. The innovative engineering

boasts excellent torque and power at low revolutions – for you

that means lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions.

02. TDI engineVolkswagen’s cutting-edge TDI engines with Diesel Particulate

Filters feature Common Rail technology that injects precise

amounts of fuel at extremely high pressure. This not only results in

a cleaner burning engine – and years of hard-wearing durability –

but exceptional fuel economy, impressive torque and compelling

performance whatever the drive.

03. DSG - Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) (not pictured)

DSG is an advanced 6 or 7-speed transmission in which the

clutch and gearshift are controlled electronically. What makes

DSG unique is that the next gear is already pre-selected and

awaiting power to be transferred, resulting in a gear change that

Production of Shark Blue Metallic will conclude from mid February 2012.

Technology 29

takes only 3-4 hundredths of a second. The benefi ts are virtually

no interruption to power, traction or acceleration, and additional

fl exibility. Furthermore, because it ensures optimum transmission

of the engine power, DSG provides excellent fuel consumption and

driving satisfaction

04. Adaptive Chassis Control ●

The optional Adaptive Chassis Control electronically adjusts the

damper characteristics for each wheel, ensuring optimum driving

comfort for any road surface or driving situation. It achieves the

optimum balance between driving comfort and driving dynamics,

based on a newly developed control algorithm.

05. Hill Start Assist (HSA) (not pictured)

Hill Start Assist holds the vehicle stationary for 1.5 seconds on

hills with an incline greater than 5 percent, when the foot brake is

released, by temporarily locking the brake pressure. This intelligent

feature provides a comfortable hill start, which importantly avoids

any rolling back.

06. BlueMotion TechnologyBlueMotion Technology is the name Volkswagen has given to its

range of innovations and intelligent technologies that make its

fun to drive, fuel effi cient and more environmentally-friendly.

On the Golf 103TDI Comfortline with BlueMotion Technology these

include the Start/Stop System and Brake Energy Recuperation,

both of which are simple in theory and robust in application.

The BlueMotion Technology brand mark lets you know you’re

driving one of the cleanest, most energy-effi cient vehicles in

Volkswagen’s range.

Safety.

Safety comes as standard, every time.

It’s all about the engineering. Volkswagen believes the single most

important aspect of any car’s design is safety. From airbags and

head restraints to braking and anti-skid systems, your Golf will do

everything it can to help you avoid an accident – and to protect you

if one occurs. These active and passive systems combine to provide

the best possible safety so you and your passengers can arrive at

your destination safe and sound.

30 Safety

01. Traction Control (EDL, ASR and ESP) Braking Control (Brake Assist, ABS and EBD)Traction control helps to ensure that you maintain control

of your vehicle even in diffi cult driving situations. Built

around three distinctive functions, Electronic Stabilisation

Program (ESP), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL) and Anti-

Slip Regulation (ASR), Traction Control improves grip, helps

prevent wheel spin and adjusts engine power automatically

depending on the conditions.

30 Safety Image is for illustration purposes only.

04

Safety 31

02. SeatbeltsAll seats feature three-point seatbelts, while the front seats

also have belt pre-tensioners (which tighten the belt on impact)

and belt force limiters (which reduce forces on passengers).

These help position the body so as to minimise injuries in the

event of a crash.

03. Safety Optimised Head Restraints By working in unison with your vehicle’s seatbelts, your

Golf’s front Safety Optimised Head Restraints are designed to

reduce whiplash injury – ensuring optimal protection when

you need it most.

04. AirbagsSeven airbags (front, front side and front and rear curtain and

driver’s knee) are standard features. Airbags combine with the seat

belts to help reduce the risk of severe head and chest injuries in

collisions. When infl ated, airbags cushion the head and upper body

and distribute the resulting loads over as large an area as possible.

05. Crumple zones (not pictured)

The body of the Golf has also been designed with the passengers

‘safety in mind. Front and rear crumple zones absorb the energy

of an impact in the event of an accident, working together with

the safety cell for you and your passengers inside the cabin.

06. Crash Impact Sound Sensor (not pictured)

The Golf is equipped with the CISS (Crash Impact Sound Sensor).

This remarkable innovation detects the sound frequencies

of noises typically heard during a crash, cross-checks them

against deceleration sensors, and activates the airbags and

seatbelt pre-tensioners in above average time. The hundredths

of seconds it saves can be crucial in a crash situation. CISS is also

perceptive in recognising minor accidents, so that airbags won’t

unnecessarily deploy.

01. Optical Parking System (OPS) ●

The Optical Parking System (included with optional Park

Assist with parking sensors) takes the parking aid/parking

sensor concept to a new level. A silhouette of the Golf is

displayed on the radio or navigation system screen during

parking, showing the Golf’s position and distance from

obstacles. Any obstacle within range of the ultrasonic sensors

is shown on screen.

Optional Equipment.

Make something unique.

The Golf is nothing if not versatile, making it a great match for

your own busy life and diverse interests. That’s why Volkswagen

offers a range of optional equipment – to make sure you can

tailor your Golf to your exact requirements.

Options for the Golf cover everything from entertainment

systems, technologies to assist the driver and overall

performance and appearance. Taken in combination with the

extensive choice of model variants, accessories, paint colours

and trim options, it’s never been easier to create a Golf that’s as

unique as you are.

32 Optional Equipment

02. Park Assist with Front and Rear Parking Sensors ●

Park Assist is able to manoeuvre the vehicle into parking

spaces for you. Once engaged, ultrasonic sensors compare

the available space with the length of the vehicle, when driving

past a parking space. If there’s enough room to park, Park Assist

automatically takes charge of the steering when you select

reverse gear. The accelerator, clutch and brake are all you need

to control as the Golf is expertly parked for you.

03. DYNAUDIO Excite 300W Premium Audio System ● (not pictured)

Available for the GTD, GTI and R, with eight speakers and 300W

of power, the DYNAUDIO Excite Premium Audio System turns

your Golf into a mobile hi-fi . Available in combination with the

standard RCD510 or optional RNS510 Satellite Navigation System,

it’s a great option for audiophiles and casual listeners alike.

04. Sport Package ●

Comfortline owners can also select an optional sport package for

their Golf. This includes dark tinted rear side and rear windows

to help keep the car cooler in summer; front fog lights to aid

visibility when the weather closes in; stylish 17" Seattle Alloy

Wheels and sports suspension to improve handling and enhance

the car’s appearance; and sports seats, for a fi rmer, more

supported ride when you decide to up the tempo. (Not available

on the 103TDI Comfortline with BlueMotion Technology.)

Fuel Saving Tips 49

Fuel Saving Tips.

We can all Think Blue.

At Volkswagen, we aim to produce the most fuel effi cient, environmentally sustainable

vehicles possible. The good news is – we can all do our little bit to ‘Think Blue’.

Below, we have summarised the best tips for how you can drive more responsibly and reduce

fuel consumption even further. It’s not just your wallet that will benefi t from these tips, but

the environment too. Its practical benefi ts go far beyond just saving money and reducing

emissions. Here are nine tips on how to drive more effi ciently.

Be aware and save fuel. Think Blue.

03. Just let it rollUse overrun fuel cutoff .With the right driving techniques, you can really

save. Whilst in gear, coast down hills or towards

traffi c lights to reduce feeding fuel to your engine.

01. Take it easy and saveDrive the modern way and think ahead.Drive smoothly and anticipate hazards. Hard

braking and acceleration, sudden lane changes

and unpredictable behaviour is fuel-ineffi cient.

02. Change up early and fi ll up laterDrive in the highest gear possible.Use a higher gear with a manual transmission.

Low revs take far less energy. With an automatic,

reduce acceleration and avoid a kick down.

04. Comfort high, fuel consumption lowUse auxiliary equipment in moderation.Check the equipment you’re using – if you don’t

need it, consider turning it off. De-misters, sound

systems and air conditioning all use energy.

05. Savings are in the airCheck your tyre pressures.Check your tyre pressures to cut fuel consumption.

Under-infl ated tyres force your car to burn more

fuel. Tyres in good order will help you save fuel.

06. A warm engine – a cool way to saveAvoid short trips.Plan to minimise the number of trips you need

to make. Frequent short trips mean higher fuel

consumption as cold engines run less effi ciently.

07. Well-oiled for impressive savingsUse Volkswagen approved engine oils.A well-lubricated engine produces less emissions

especially when the weather is cold or the trip is

short. Change your oil at regular intervals.

08. Keep it sleekCut aerodynamic drag.Remember to remove roof racks, bike racks or roof

boxes off your car when they’re not in use. Keep

windows up and sunroofs closed to reduce drag.

09. Lightly does itAvoid unnecessary weight.Every kilogram you load into your car takes energy

to move – energy that will be supplied by burning

fuel. The lighter you drive, the more you save.

50 Glossary O Optional equipment

Glossary.4MOTION®

An all-wheel-drive system that provides the best possible

traction at all road speeds, in all weather and road conditions.

An electronic Haldex clutch responds to traction losses at the front

and rear axles and directs torque to the axle with the best traction.

Adaptive Chassis Control OThe electrically controlled dampers of adaptive chassis control

constantly adjust to the road conditions, the driving situation

and driver’s requirements. Using a button located on the centre

console, the driver selects between three damper settings –

NORMAL, COMFORT and SPORT.

Starting from the normal setting, the driver can change the basic

character of the car towards sporty or more comfort-oriented

driving. In SPORT and COMFORT settings, the corresponding

name is illuminated in the button. In NORMAL setting, only

the shock absorber symbol is illuminated. In all settings, the

adaptive chassis control adjusts the damping to the particular

driving situation (up till one thousand times per second)

which means it offers an optimum level of driving comfort and

enjoyment at all times. In addition, in the SPORT setting the

steering feel is also adapted. Particularly on windy roads and

poor surfaces, using adaptive chassis control offers sporty and

yet comfortable driving.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)When braking, wheel speed sensors measure the road wheel

speed and should one or more wheels start to lock the ABS system

reduces brake pressure to that wheel. This prevents the wheels

from locking during heavy or emergency braking, enabling the

vehicle to remain steerable.

Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)ASR is a switchable traction control system that prevents the wheels

from spinning under acceleration by reducing engine torque.

Brake AssistDuring emergency braking, Brake Assist aids the driver by

increasing the brake pressure automatically to a level exceeding the

locking limit. The ABS is thus quickly brought into the operating

range, which enables maximum vehicle deceleration to be achieved.

Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)DSG is a manual gearbox in which the gearshifts are controlled

electronically. What makes the DSG unique is that it has 2

separate gear sets operated by 2 clutches. The benefi t of 2 gear

sets and 2 clutches is that one gear set and clutch is engaged

driving the vehicle with the second disengaged clutch having

already pre-selected the next gear awaiting for power to be

transferred. As the next gear has already been pre-selected prior

to power being applied, the gear change only takes 3-4 100ths of

a second. There is virtually no interruption to power, traction or

acceleration. The DSG also offers Tiptronic gear selection and

sports mode.

Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution (EBD)Electronic, more sophisticated means of regulating the ratio

of front/rear brake pressure. Settings are varied according to

driving and load conditions to ensure each wheel is braked to the

optimum extent.

Electronic Diff erential Lock (EDL)EDL improves driving and steering characteristics when

accelerating on road surfaces where each wheel has a different

degree of traction. The system operates automatically and is

combined with the ABS system. Using the ABS wheel sensors,

EDL monitors the speed of the individual driving wheels. When a

difference in driving wheel speed is detected (i.e. when one wheel

starts to spin due to differences in road surfaces, e.g. due to water

or dirt) the system brakes the spinning wheel, transferring engine

power to the wheel with the best traction.

Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP)ABS and ASR traction control systems are integrated into the

Electronic Stabilisation Program (ESP). In short, ESP helps ensure

that the vehicle goes where you steer it even in extreme driving

conditions. The ESP system constantly compares the actual

movement of the vehicle with pre-determined values and should

a situation arise where the vehicle starts to skid, ESP will apply the

brakes to individual wheels and automatically adjust the engine’s

power output to correct the problem. ESP prevents the vehicle from

losing control when trying to avoid an accident, for example. It also

prevents spinning off on a curve due to either understeer or oversteer.

Extended Electronic Diff erential Lock (XDL)XDL is an extension of the Electronic Differential Lock (EDL)

function. When cornering, XDL responds to the load relief at the

front wheel on the inside of a corner. The ESP hydraulics are used

for the XDL to apply pressure to the wheel on the inside of the corner

in order to prevent wheel spin. This improves traction and reduces

the tendency to understeer. As a direct result of the one-sided and

precise braking pressure, cornering is sportier and more accurate.

Hill Start Assist (HSA)Hill Start Assist (HSA) holds the vehicle when the foot brake is

released by temporarily locking the brake pressure (for a maximum

of 1.5 seconds) to provide comfortable starting-off without rolling

back. Hill Start Assist (HSA) operates on inclines greater than 5%

and is fi tted in combination with both the manual transmission and

the Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG).

Park Assist OPark Assist actively helps the driver when reversing into parallel

parking spaces. The system works by using sensors mounted either

side of the front bumper together with parking distance sensors

front and rear. To parallel park the driver needs to press the Park

Assist button and use the appropriate indicator before the car passes

the potential parking space. Sensors in the front bumper then scan

the size of the parking space as the car is driven slowly past and

the driver is alerted if the parking space is big enough. If there is

suffi cient space, the driver stops the car, selects reverse and let’s go

of the steering wheel.

Park Assist will alert the driver of the intended reverse path in the

Multi-Function Display, within the driver’s fi eld of vision. Park

Assist then actively supports the driver by taking over the steering

control and parks the vehicle in the available space using the ideal

course, if necessary with several moves. The driver can however

take over the control of the steering at any time and end the

automatic parking procedure. The system can reverse into parking

spaces on both the left hand and right hand side of the road, for

example on one way streets.

Park Assist cannot replace the driver’s attentiveness. The driver is still legally responsible

for the vehicle. If the driver notices a risk that pedestrians, other vehicles or objects could

be damaged or if they are uncertain of the risk, they will need to react accordingly and

stop the vehicle, ending the function.
