WELCOME

This issue is the first ever DataCentre Management Buyers’Guide and should be a useful

addition to the desk of any datacentre professional.

This month also see the firstData Centre World Frankfurt.Following the successful co-locationof Data Centre World and CloudExpo, DCW Frankfurt will be co-located with Powering the Cloud.

DCW Frankfurt is now the onlydedicated data centre event inGermany and is a must attend forthe continental data centremanagers and it may be even worth

a visit from the UK.According to CBRE, across the

major European markets includingAmsterdam, Frankfurt and London,a total of 38MW of customer ITpower was sold in the first half of2014, 68% higher compared to thesame period of 2013. This bodeswell for data centre providersacross Europe.

Finally, a survey by Colt hasrevealed that data centre complexityis becoming a worry for ITmanagers. Maybe we should revertto the maxim; keep it simple, stupid!

NEWS IN BRIEF■ EURO GROWTHAccording to CBRE, across themajor European marketsincluding Amsterdam,Frankfurt and London, a totalof 38MW of customer IT powerwas sold in the first half of2014, 68% higher compared tothe same period of 2013.Frankfurt and Amsterdam haveexperienced particularlystrong activity this year. Totaltake-up in Frankfurt at theclose of the second quartertotalled 13.2MW, more thantwice the amount sold in thesame period of last year. InAmsterdam total take-up nowexceeds that achieved in thefull year of 2013 and at mid-year a total of 11.7MW hasbeen sold in the Dutch capital, the highest six month totalrecorded. Driven by sustainedcustomer interest thesemarkets continue to be thesubject of investment in 2014with many of the majoroperators advancing build outprograms to accommodatenew business.

Furthermore, for a largeproportion, complexity leads toa degree of planning anxiety, which is causing IT managersto spend a disproportionateamount of time and resourceplanning data centre strategy.According to the research, 90per cent of IT managers feelanxious about data centreplanning, and this impacts theirwork. Over half (54 per cent)state they spend more time ondata centre strategy planningthan they should.

Security was cited as aprimary source of complexityand cause for anxiety, with 64per cent stating that security isthe most important area ofconsideration when planningdata centre infrastructurestrategy. The threat of a securitybreach – through virus or

network attack - is also the datacentre risk which causesgreatest concern (36%).

For IT managers seeking toexpand their operationsabroad, regulation issues –defined as ‘restrictive andunfamiliar legislation’ – wascited as the greatest difficultyfor one third (33 per cent). Thiswas followed by 28 per centwho highlighted technicalmigration as the biggest hurdle.

Detlef Spang, EVP for DataCentre Services at Colt: “Thedata centre is a fundamentalpart of any organisationsinfrastructure, but for ITmanagers keeping their datacentre strategy in line with theirevolving business needs is anongoing battle. IT managersmust negotiate a variety ofstrategic, business-critical

issues. Driving simplicity acrossIT infrastructure, and inparticular the data centre, istherefore key.”

However, a further Coltreport reveals the extent of thedata centre challenge ahead.90 per cent of IT decisionmakers believe that their datacentre infrastructure will needto evolve over the next twoyears to meet future businessneeds (source: Colt TechDeficit). IT managers willincreasingly align with trustedthird parties that enable themto achieve this simplicity goalwhilst also increasing flexibilityand mitigating risk.

Spang concludes, “ITmanagers and data centremanagers will increasingly needto find strategic partners. Thesepartnerships can deliver

benefits such as reducing therisk of medium to long-termplanning based on today’sview, allowing IT managers toadapt solutions quickly andenabling IT departments toleverage specialist industryexpertise around areas such assecurity and resilience. ITdecision makers should alsoconsider the additional value-add services that somecolocation providers offer. Theyneed a partner that will growwith them both in region andabroad – removing theregulation and uncertaintywhich exists in new markets. It’s reassuring from theresearch to see that such ahigh proportion of respondentswho chose colocation as astrategy believe that it willdeliver against business goals.”

New independent research commissioned by Colt Technology Services amongst European IT managers, has revealedwidespread concern around the impact of complexit y on planning data centre infrastructure strategy. The survey results –published in the Planning Anxiety report – found that 70 per cent of IT managers were concerned about the complexit y ofplanning data centre strategy.

Research shows that complexity is a worry

The expansion project includes the construction of two ne w datahalls, consisting of up to 64 racks in each, as well as build andconfiguration rooms and secure storage areas. The ne w facility willfeature two-factor authentication security access and will beconfigurable according to specific customer requirements.

“This expansion is part of Pulsant’s overall growth strategy whichincludes upgrading and growing our existing data centre sites,” saysMatt Lovell, CTO, Pulsant. “The drive behind this strategy is toensure we deliver cost-effective, highly secure, environmentallysound services to our customers through our technologically up-to-date facilities that deliver maximum uptime, redundanc y andsupport.”

The expansion project is scheduled for completion in F ebruary2015.

Pulsant has announced the expansion of its South Gyle tier 3data centre site, based just outside of Edinburgh, with theconstruction of a new facility.

Glasgow expansion

Dimension Data is deploying globally standardised managedservices for data centres. Built on the group’s state-of-the-ar tmanaged services automation platform, the portfolio

manages server, storage and networks for on-premise, cloud andhybrid data centres.

Earlier this year, Dimension Data announced it would quadruplethe size of its data centre business to USD 4 billion by 2018. Thelaunch of this suite of managed services is the next step in a set ofstrategic initiatives to expand the group’s capability to consistentlysupport domestic and multinational clients’ data centretransformation requirements.

Steve Joubert, Dimension Data’s group executive for data centressays, “We’re seeing a shift away from clients o wning and managingtheir own data centre to outsourcing the entire infrastructure, or themanagement of the environment. Even with the advent of cloud,Technology Business Research recently repor ted that 70% of privatecloud adopters will utilise third parties to manage theirenvironments.

“With Managed Services for Data Centres, clients maintaintechnology flexibility, while we automate routine transactional andknowledge work across the network, ser ver, and storage for on-premise and cloud environments.”

Is it ok to think of data centres as life supportsystems for computer operations? After all, the servers are relianton the delivery of three critical support systems - power, coolingand connectivity. This ‘out of the box’ thinking led me to considerthe major role that energy efficiency and reduction in CO2emissions has played in the evolution of the data centre as asupport system - but where will the next potential energy reducingsolution come from? Is it even possible to make these furtherenergy savings that everyone is demanding from their data centreoperator partner?Let’s look at the facts. It is unlikely in the short term that hardwarevendors are going to reduce the heat levels generated by theirequipment, and, from a data centre operator perspective, wecannot remove communications or power requirements. Is theeasiest option left to address cooling methods then? Where wouldwe even start? Perhaps the ultimate challenge would be to push the boundaries ofthe operating conditions beyond current agreed limits? We knowfrom experience of running data centres around the world thatservers can handle a much wider range of temperatures than thosestipulated; so there is flexibility. However with aggressive SLA’s inplace and natural paranoia about protecting data, does anyoneactually want to be the first to take that bold step?I think that the most interesting step-change ahead couldpotentially be way we – as an industry - tackle the design andbuild of the data centre facility itself. Teams would need toinvestigate how to create a dynamic concept that could move theair as needed which could also, in time, lead to reduced powerdensity in the halls. Is this utopia?Ultimately if we want to benefit from potential cost savings inexcess of 30% across the construction of the data centre, in parallelwith reducing facilities management expenses and lowering energycosts, we are all going to have to be brave and introduce somedramatic new concepts. And for this to be successful, industry-wide forces need to work together.Where do we sign up?

Experience the futureof the data centre - inFrankfurtWith Frankfurt coming into focus as one of the most importantEuropean hubs for data infrastructure, it’s hardly surprising tofind that Germany’s most prominent data centre professionalswill gather near the Main River in late October to share ideasand discuss the possibilities of the data centre revolution.

At peak times over 2.5 teraby tes of data per second are flo wingthrough the constantly-expanding IT infrastructure in Frankfurt - thenew centre of data convergence in Europe. Government initiativeshave combined with extraordinary levels of investment to transformGermany’s fifth-largest city into its most impor tant in terms of datainfrastructure.

On the 28th and 29th of October a greatly e xpanded DataCentre World emerges for the first time in F rankfurt, attracting anextraordinary mixture of expert voices from the world of data centretechnology and provision, and presenting an unmissableopportunity to discover the latest developments, challenges andsolutions in the world of the data centre professional.

Over 200 key industry speakers will share their e xperiences andcounsel for the road ahead, covering an e xhaustive range of topicsincluding design and build, disaster recovery and businesscontinuity, power management, virtualisation, compliance and riskmanagement, software defined networking, and much more.

DCW Frankfurt also features over 20 case studies from thepublic, private and academic sectors, adding detail and depth to thethemes and topics of the gathering. Six theatres will accommodatekeynote speakers and symposium contributors across themesincluding ‘Data Centres of the Future’, ‘Advances in Critical PowerEquipment & Facilities’, ‘Virtualisation Infrastructure and Platforms’,‘Software Defined Data Centres’ and ‘Data Centre Efficienc y’.

With Germany so central to the issue of security in this period,Interxion’s senior technical consultant Markus Steckhan joins the‘Advances in Critical Equipment and Facilities Management’ roster todiscuss key security issues facing data centre de velopment in thefields of healthcare, government, education and the private sector, with topics ranging from physical security to data security and fireprotection.

This section of the expo also features Daniel Hackenberg fromthe University of Dresden, expounding on current best practices inenergy-efficient air and water cooling in data centres, andaddressing the design and structural consequences of the long-termseparation of hot and cold air throughout the structure of a datacentre.

In ‘Software Defined Networks & Data Centre Efficienc y’, Prof.Hermann de Meer from the University of Pass au will outline theroadmap for energy savings and power shifting in data centres, looking at schemes based on the consumption of rene wable energysources, and the benefits of par ticipation in energy reserveschemes.

Some of the most exciting subjects at DCW Frankfurt will emergefrom the ‘Data Centres of the Future’ forum. In one keynote FalkStern from small-world network provider X ING will discuss how

open source tools can help to manage a colocation where theserver and the workstation are 600 kilometres apart.

In the same forum, data centre manager Christian Altenberger,ICT manager of the city of Vienna for se ven years, will present auser report on the planning and commissioning of a high-availability qualitative data centre – an epic endeavour of projectmanagement.

Data Centre World Frankfurt is no passive spectacle, however, but a chance to interact and network directly with ke y minds thatare driving the evolution of data centre design, implementation andpolicy. It’s an essential event for the sector.

NEWS IN BRIEF■ STANDARDSUK data centre managers needto be aware of ongoing workto standardise their sector andget involved in the process, orrisk being caught out by newlaws and penalties. This wasthe warning from data centreexpert Mark Acton, criticalproduct director at CBRENorland Managed Services, while speaking to an audienceof data centre managers, technicians and facilitiesmanagers last week. Mr Acton was addressingdelegates at a dedicated datacentre seminar day hosted byebm-papst UK. Explaining the lack of genuineclear international standardsfor data centres, Mr Actonsaid: “There are also lots ofcompeting bodies trying tooccupy the data centre space– but nobody really knowswhat we should be doing [interms of standards] or whichbest practice group we shouldbe following and whosecolours we should be pinningto our masts. “All of this gives environmentalgroups the opportunity to tellus what we should be doing -the adverse media attention ispotentially very dangerous forthe sector.”

An inspiring project

Eaton has been chosen toprovide UninterruptiblePower Supplies (UPSs)

that form a key part of theinfrastructure of the ingeniousand innovative WiSpire project. This is bringing affordable high-speed broadband services tothe whole county of Norwich, including not only the mainpopulation centres, but also thecounty’s many small andisolated communities.

WiSpire is a joint venturebetween two organisationsthat might, at first sight, appear to be unlikely partners:FreeClix, a leading ISP,telecom and IT integratorbased in Norwich, and theChurch of England Diocese ofNorwich, which serves andsupports churches, schoolsand communities throughoutNorfolk. Both organisations, however, have a stronginterest in securing the future

of communities in Norfolk andboth have assets that areessential for the success of theWiSpire project.

The success of WiSpiredepends on finding a suitableelevated location for thetransmitters, and the ingenioussolution adopted by FreeClixand the Diocese of Norwich isto put them in parish churchesthroughout the county.

This approach has severalbenefits: almost everycommunity, no matter howsmall, has a parish church andit’s often on high ground closeto the centre of thecommunity; the churchesalmost invariably have hightowers or spires that provideexcellent locations for theWiSpire aerials; and securespace can readily be found inmost churches toaccommodate the transmittersand associated equipment.

Most UK data centres willnot be fit for purpose withfive years

Alex Rabbetts, CEO MigSolvtold The Stack, “Much oftoday’s stock is in need of amajor re-fit or refurbishment. While larger data centre playersare better equipped to copewith ageing-facilities, otherssimply don’t have the capacityto be able to carry out a re-fitwithout major disruption toservice. Not nearly enough up-to-date space will be ready tomeet a demand driven by thecorporate shift to cloudcomputing.”

Rabbetts continued, “Theplant infrastructure of theseearlier units is, at best, exhausted. Data centres that are10-15 years old are ready formajor plant replacement, butthere is a problem. Asupposedly ‘Tier 3’-rated datacentre will have N+1 CRAC,(Computer Room AirConditioning), units but theyprobably share a singlepipework system, and N+1UPS, (Uninterruptible PowerSupplies), that probably share acommon bus bar system. Theinfrastructure, which was neverwhat it was claimed to be, is inneed of replacement and theresultant downtime. Withcurrent occupancy levels atnear maximum at some of

these facilities, how can theycarry out the urgent works thatare necessary? With theexpected delays, what kind ofimpact will this have onbusinesses?

Steve Wallage, managingdirector, BroadGroupConsulting, added: “It is acomplex area. You will hearvendors claim that a data centrebuilt, even a year ago is alreadyobsolete. Others will argue thatthe move to cloud will rendermost existing data centresobsolete within the next severalyears. The reality has been thatmany data centres have lastedfar longer than expected. AEuropean co-location providerrecently asked customers if itshould mothball a facility builtin the early 1990s, only to betold that these customers werevery happy at the current site.”

Clearly no data centreprovider will ever admit torunning a sub-standard facilitybut the reality is many havebeen failing in recent times andit is going to get worse.Rabbetts concluded: “The fearof major outages, as well theneed to be always on, willmean data centre providers aregoing to need to be ever moreresourceful and versatile.”

According to MigSolv, nearly 80% of the U K’s data centreswill become unsuitable in just five years time.

Four new data centres

Acronis has opened four new data centres in Asia and Europein addition to already working datacentres in the U S andFrance. The new data centres, located in in Germany; Japan;

Russia and Singapore, bring secure, localised data protection toAsian and European businesses that are concerned about theprivacy and security of their data.

“Today, businesses feel apprehensive about storing their data inregions far from their own,” said Stanislav Protassov, Acronis co-founder and senior VP of engineering and R&D.

Switched onGlobal Switch has become the first large sc ale, carrierneutral, multi tenanted data centre provider in L ondon toparticipate in the Climate Change Agreement (CCA). GlobalSwitch’s London customers will no longer be liable for theCarbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) payments. Thischange will apply from 1 September 2014 to energy used byexisting customers who take metered power and to all newcustomers going forward.

The UK’s Chancellor of theExchequer announced the CCAfor data centres in his Autumnstatement in December 2013.It provided a concession fromthe CRC Energy EfficiencyScheme for the data centreindustry, following extensivelobbying by techUK of whichGlobal Switch is an activemember.

Since this announcementGlobal Switch has workedclosely with techUK to enterinto a Climate ChangeAgreement (CCA) with theUK’s Environment Agencyhaving satisfied all of theirrequirements. Global Switchhas offered green power for all70MW of the connectedcapacity at its London datacentre since 2009. Thosecustomers that switched togreen power have thereforebenefitted from a ClimateChange Levy (CCL) exemptionsince then. The CCA is the

next phase of continuousimprovement and value to allcustomers.

Derek Allen, Global Switch’sgroup director of operationsand one of the early membersof the Data Centre Council oftechUK, said, “I am delightedthat Global Switch has beengiven assent to the underlyingCCA in the UK. This isrecognition of the leadingposition Global Switch has inthe data centre market and thegrowth in the sector. I believethe investment we haveundertaken at our London datacentre campus includingupgrade to our coolinginfrastructure and working withcustomers to improve theirefficiencies has been central toour strategy. I am confidentthat going forwards we canmeet or exceed energy controlmeasures demanded bymembership of the CCAscheme.”

Commonwealth gainsHailed as the most successful Commonwealth Games to date,Borri was chosen as a key provider of Uninterruptible P owerSupply (UPS) solutions for the event.

The company supplied atotal of 458 individual BorriUPS units ranging between1kVA through to 80kVA, to over19 sites. Delivery to the variouslocations required precisionplanning and timing, which wasexpertly handled by all par tiesinvolved.

The majority of the ordercomprised a selection of Borri

rackmountable, rotation UPSsystems. The battery backupruntimes required for thedifferent units ranged from 5minutes to six hours, depending on the standbygenerators supplied by others. The B300 Rotation and B400Rotation series from Borri is ahigh efficiency, flexible singlephase solution.

Excool is a fully developed and purpose designed datacentre cooling product which we believe is the mostefficient indirect economiser in the world in both termsof water and energy usage.

The system uses outdoor air indirectly through aspecially designed series of heat exchangers enablingcooling to take place without outdoor air entering thedata hall, therefore air pollution hazards such assmoke and salt aerosols are kept out of the building.

Our greatest innovations are the heat transfermedium, adiabatic data centre cooling method andthe arrangement of both, which together form theessence of the system efficiency.

In most cases, this allows our product to be usedwithout mechanical cooling being needed. Since theintroduction of our product, data centre operators nolonger have to rely on energy hungry mechanicalcooling and can dramatically reduce theirinfrastructure, operating and maintenance costs.
