An Evolving Energy System ▪ Transition to a decentralised zero carbon system requires:

o Increased flexibility from demand/generation

o Frequency regulation to compensate lower synchronous generation

▪ Data Centres can contribute to the energy transition as prosumers

▪ Master+ is a UPS-Battery solution specifically designed to:

o Profit from energy markets without taking energy market risks

o Reliability increases due to 24/7 monitoring and typically an extended backup time

▪ Battery is virtually split into a backup and a commercial segment

▪ Backup segment represents in general 30% of the total useable capacity

o This capacity is configured and controlled by the UPS and cannot be accessed by RWE → The backup segment is preserved

▪ SoC oscillates in general between 60% and 70% during normal operation

o During a disruption of the supply grid, the Data Centre typically has access to an extended backup autonomy

Simplified Schematic Diagram of Control System

▪ Integrated control system allows to monetisesolution in energy markets

▪ High IT security design

▪ Priority of the UPS is always to protect the critical infrastructure.

▪ In case of grid disruption it turns into protection mode and does not accept any command

Frequency Response/Peak Shaving

500

kW

▪ The power grid operates at 50Hz

▪ Master+ helps to stabilise the frequency at 50Hz

o If the frequency falls below 50Hz, the Master+ battery is discharged and vice versa

o The extent of the frequency deviation defines charging and discharging volumes

▪ The batteries are perfect for providing frequency response as they can instantly deliver full capacity in both directions profiting from the market

▪ Depending on the location, grid charges can be reduced via peak shaving

Frequency is above 50Hz,

battery is charged

Frequency is below 50Hz,

battery is discharged

Integrated in the existing infrastructure

▪ Master+ uses the redundant power connection capacity in Data Centres to provide ancillary services (i.e. UPS, switchgear, transformers, etc.)

▪ Master+ installation does not differ from a standard UPS system

▪ RWE invests in a larger premium batterywith a virtual split

▪ Shared infrastructure reduces the cost for both parties
