Data Citation at Flinders University
What do we want? Data Citation
When do we want it? Now!

• Data Citation• Worldwide trends• DOIs• What’s happening at TERN• What’s happening at CSIRO• The ANDS/Thomson Reuters Data Citation
Project• Where the rewards lie
What’s already been covered
Mission Statement
• Took part in the ANDS/Thomson Reuters Project
• After hearing the presentations this afternoon…
I need to tell you why Flinders
Regarding the trial itself
• Very little investment of time or resources• (thanks to ANDS and Thomson Reuters)
• Excellent timing• Few live records (9) - therefore
• Capacity to easily change our processes if we needed to
• Small task to fix older records if required• We still had technical capacity to fix anything if
we needed to
ReportingBut the benefits were great
• Knowing for sure that it would work for our records
• Meaning we could tell researchers for sure that it would work for their datasets
• Chance to influence the process• Better than coming in later and having to play
catch up
Responsibilities – eResearch
• Anecdotally, we knew researchers were interested• It’s a great carrot for making data open or available for
sharing• It’s a way for researchers to acknowledge the use of
dataset – whether they have created the dataset themselves or not
• A very tangible way of acknowledging the dataset as a research output in its own right– And of acknowledging use of datasets created by others
Why were we so keen?
• Another chance to be proactive in this area• Higher visibility for Flinders• Another chance to be part of a collaboration (we love
that stuff!)
But really – why so keen?
Responsibilities – Data Management
• We knew that ANDS were either talking to or likely to talk to the ARC about datasets as research outputs
• We thought this could lead to more emphasis on data management planning in grants (which it has)
• We reckon that we will later see a mandate on sharing data
• Down the track, we think information on data sharing could be used for research assessment

Responsibilities – Digital ReositoriesAnd if you’re talking research assessment
• Citation data might play a big part

• Have you looked at the way researchers currently acknowledge the use of datasets?
Why else?
