Disk-Based Backup – Market Drivers

• Due to Serial ATA (SATA) disk technology and its low price, the market requirement for disk-based backup has increased dramatically.

• Numerous companies have introduced tape emulation products that use these low-cost disk drives, specialized controllers and software to emulate a tape library and tape drives.

• Disk snapshot technologies (software and hardware) are becoming enterprise ready for fast backup and recovery.

• Customers are considering moving some (or all) of their backups to disk. In addition, restoring from disk can in some circumstances be much faster than restoring from tape.

Enterprise Data Protection 29Expert Forum 2007

• High performance backups initially staged to disk for faster recovery• Scheduled migration to long-term storage manages disk utilization

What is Disk Staging?

Disk Staging creates a cache on DSSU and move images to media of choice for long term storage in an automated fashion.

Enterprise Data Protection 31Expert Forum 2007

Why Disk Staging?

Disk Staging is attractive for the following reasons:

Faster recovery time during staging periodEfficient use of system, network and tape resourceFacilitates streaming backup to tape without image multiplexingSynthetic backups are simplifiedCost savings by expiring short term offsite copy on diskAllows the backups to run when tape drives are scarce

Enterprise Data Protection 32Expert Forum 2007

Faster Recovery Time During the Staging Period

Disk staging as you have seen is a two stage process. In stage one initial storage location is disk. In stage two data is often moved to a tape.

This two stage process allows backup administrators leverage the advantages of disk based backups in the near term and tape based backups in long term.

Efficient use of System, Network and Tape Resource

Disk staging provides you with the flexibility of time and allows you to use system, tape and network resources in a more efficient manner.

Enterprise Data Protection 35Expert Forum 2007

Image Multiplexing

Advantages:No Shoe ShinningUse less tape media

Disadvantages:Poor restore time with image multiplexingMay need more than one tape to read fromMust read all the images on the tape even if you are restoring only one

Enterprise Data Protection 36Expert Forum 2007

Disk Staging Facilitates Streaming Backups to Tape without Image Multiplexing

All the images can be streamed and backed up in a sequential manner without having to multiplex

No need to read all images in order to restore one imageLess chances of having an image span over more than one tape

Synthetic Backups

No Need to pull all the data every day to create a daily full backupBackup only the data that has changed (differential backup)Synthesize full backup from last full and differential/sSynthesize cumulative differentials

Enterprise Data Protection 39Expert Forum 2007

Synthetic Backups

ChallengesAll the differentials need to be read from one or more tapesIn case multiplexing was used to save the tape drive from shoe shinning, read

more images and perhaps more tapesIn case synthetic you want to create is from tape to tape, more than one tape

drive will be needed

Enterprise Data Protection 40Expert Forum 2007

Synthetic Backups Simplified

Use disk staging to backup differentials to DSSU and synthesize cumulative to tape.

Enterprise Data Protection 41Expert Forum 2007

Cost Saving by Expiring Short Term offsite copy on Disk

An emerging new trend among some customers trying to reduce their cost significantly by reducing their backups to tapes by expiring short term offsite copy on disk

• WAN connectivity is becoming cheaper, even a 3Mbit/Sec Commercial SDSL can move up to 800MB/Hour

• Many corporations lease dark fiber between distant offices

Faster Backups

• FlashBackup method – Physical backup, light backup footprint

• Ideal for backing up thousands or millions of small files

– More cost effective and granular than hardware-based solutions – Full or incremental backup of live file system– Supports NTFS, UFS, Online JFS or Veritas File System – Restore individual files or directories, remote or local file system

File System Cache

Raw Partition Backup1. Map of file system is made2. Physical backup begins3. For live data, old image is cached4. Cached data is written to tape

Enterprise Data Protection 45Expert Forum 2007

Lower Impact via Off-host Backups

• Extend and leverage a variety of snapshot methods

– Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)

– 3rd party hardware-based solutions from EMC, HDS, HP, and Sun

• Key Benefits– System (Client A) remains online with

reduced backup impact– Database and application support

(Oracle, SQL, DB2, Exchange)– No scripting– No need to manually track where data

originally came from– Restores are just as easy as from a

New Disk Management and Optimization Features

• Proactive disk capacity management – High/low watermarks for disk staging– Multi-stream staging– Simultaneous use of multiple drives

• Enhanced Availability– Automatically allocates disk targets for backup to

ensure jobs complete– Import disk backup images to another media

server in case of server failure or catalog loss

• Improved tuning parameters and settings– New default settings improve disk performance

NetBackup Operations Manager

• New architecture, design, and implementation• Not an incremental update to existing products (example:

NBAR & GDM)• NOM does include most of the features/functionality of

NBAR and GDM but offers much richer reporting• Ships with NBU 6.0 Enterprise

– Licensed “free” for NBU 6.0 Enterprise users

Enterprise Data Protection 53Expert Forum 2007

What NOM can’t do….

• A NBU configuration tool– Can’t configure media, storage units, policies, schedules etc.

• NOM is not a Web based UI for NBU administrative functions.

• Support other backup products

• Provisioning, SLA and Chargeback

• Workflow/ticketing
