In2003,PoEbecameastandardwiththeapprovalofIEEE802.3af,eliminatingtheneedtohaveseparateLANcablesfordataandelectricalcablesforpower.Class3PoEswitchescandeliverupto15.4wattsofpoweracrosseachport,providingconvergedpoweranddatatodevicessuchasVoIPphones,surveillancecameras,andwirelessaccesspoints.

While15.4wattsofpowerissufficientformanydevices,PoE+isanemergingstandard(802.3at)thatleveragesmodernCAT5ecablingtoprovide30wattsofpowerperport—enablinghigher-powerednext-generationcampusconvergencedevicessuchaswireless802.11naccesspoints,videoconferencingphones,andpan/tiltsurveillancecameras.Moreover,PoE+isbackwardcompatiblewith802.3afPoE,andBrocadeFCXSeriesswitchescanuseLLDPtonegotiateportsettingsdynamically.
