Best known as the world’s foremost authority on metadata management and the father of the Managed Metadata Environment, he is an internationally recognized expert in the fields of data governance, big data, data warehousing, master data management and data management. ❑ Data Stewardship: The process of having data stewards work with the data and metadata of an organization to ensure its quality, accuracy, formats, domain values, and that it is properly defined and understood across the enterprise

❑ Data Stewardship’s role is to ensure organizational data and metadata meet quality, accuracy, format and value criteria; ensuring that data is properly defined and understood (standardized) across the enterprise





Data Stewardship

❑ Data Steward: A person(s) responsible for working with the data and metadata to meet the requirements of the data governance program➢ Write business term definitions

Executive Sponsor

❑ Traditionally the greatest obstacles a data stewardship initiative experiences are political

❑ Any initiative that cuts across a company’s lines of business must have executive management support

❑ Executive sponsors do not need to attend every data stewardship meeting, nor do they need to participate in detailed tasks like defining data definitions

❑ Executive sponsors are responsible for communicating the value of data and its impact on the organization’s behavior and performance

❑ Sponsors:

➢ Their job is providing the appropriate level of support for their Program Manager and their Chief Stewards

➢ Fund governance and stewardship operations

➢ Promote and communicate the goals of data governance and the stewardship function within the organization





❑ Key qualities in an executive sponsor:

➢ Someone willing to be an executive sponsor

➢ Someone with an understanding of the value of data as a

corporate asset

➢ Excellent communications skills

➢ A person with executive ranking

❑ The Data Governance Program Manager (DGPM) is responsible for the day-to-day organization and management of the data governance council.

❑ Typically the DGPM will be a senior level person (as opposed to executive level)

❑ Must have a sound knowledge of both the technical and the business sides of the organization

❑ Must be politically savvy to coordinate and guide the data governance council and lead the support team staff

❑ Needs strong leadership and communication skills to maintain the data governance program’s focus and organizational contacts

❑ Must be able to lead the data governance council to consensus across disparate groups within the organization

Data Governance Program Specialist

❑ Reports to the DGPM and a large data governance program

may need multiple Data Governance Program Specialists

❑ Responsible for activities within the data governance program

❑ An experienced data governance and data management

➢ Must have a background in data governance and general data

❑ Develops policies, practices, standards, documents, etc. for

use by program and data stewardship teams

❑ Supports data stewardship teams with data governance

❑ The business steward is responsible for defining the procedures, policies, data meanings, and requirements of the domains assigned to them

❑ Business stewards must work with the data of the organization on a day-to-day basis

❑ Must have a strong knowledge of the business requirements and policies / processes of the organization

❑ Must be able to work with other key business staff to gain consensus on their organizations’ business policies and requirements

Domain / Lead / Subject-Area Steward

❑ Each domain (or subject-area) should have a Domain Steward, supported by one or more Business Data Stewards

❑ The Domain Steward is the central point of responsibility for their domain

❑ Domain Stewards serve on the Data Stewardship Coordination Group representatives of their domain

❑ Domain Stewards are usually “first among equals” on their domain’s stewardship team





Chief Steward

❑ The Chief Steward is chosen from the Domain

/ Lead / Coordinating Data Stewards

❑ The Chief Steward is the leader of the

stewards on the Data Stewardship

Coordination Group

❑ Chief Stewards are usually “first among

equals” of the Domain Stewards





Technical Steward

❑ Technical stewards typically come from the IT side of the organization or an IT-like group within a business unit

❑ Assists business data stewards under the guidance of the Data Governance Program Manager with appropriate tools (repository, Metadata Management product, etc.) and profiling data

❑ Does not need to possess the domain expertise of the business data steward or chief data steward

❑ Allows business stewards to participate in data governance without detailed technical expertise or skills

❑ Technical Stewards are often members of the IT department or an IT-like group in a business unit





❑ Ensure that the data and metadata in each application meet the standards and guidelines developed and implemented by the Business Stewards

➢ Enter and maintain the correct data values in an application based on the requirements provided by the data stewards

❑ Data custodians can be members of the IT department or business area staff

❑ They are typically under the guidance of the Technical Steward

Data Ownership





❑ The actual owner of the data can be a tricky question to answer and can differ based on your definition of ownership

❑ There could be a difference between legal ownership and internalownership

❑ Legal: Could be the C-Level executive or the company as a whole❑ Internal: Possibly a person who works with the data on a day-to-day

basis❑ Many times we recommend that the main person, who works with the

data element at an application level is the data owner➢ This implies that there are many data owners (one for each application)

❑ Examples of responsibilities for a data owner might be:➢ Compliance➢ Data Management oversight, including risk management, data security, data

quality, etc.➢ Data Governance oversight, including data access policies, metadata oversight,

etc.
