Well, we do a good job as it is separating the data by subject area and looking for areas of weakness. However, as with a lot of our tests we could do better with verifying causes. The incorporation of a vocabulary word of the day by itself is simply a rote memorization technique and without the critical thinking component to a vocab word, it is very low-level learning.

The scores need to be shared with the 9th grade teachers. They are the ones who taught the biology content, so it would be most useful for them to see the breakdown. Information needs to be shared with the vertical team. Information on the content strands by subgroups so we can look at trends from year to year. The problem however, is that this test actually changes topics. from year to year. Also, we spent a great deal of money training teachers

  • how to teach students Document based writing. I would love this test which is biology content, to be chemistry content since that is what all the students have just finished taking when they are given this test. We are doing something wrong, the scores went down.

Document % improvement to ensure teachers have met the tier in their RBES goals

Since this is done so late in the year, there is not a lot of time spent on the strands that were weak. This should be done before the beginning of the next school year so there can be remedies for solutions to those areas of weakness.

Data Wish List Are there any other types of assessment data you would like to see your school collect and use to improve instruction?

I would like teachers to break down their unit test data not just by most missed, but also by sub-groups. This way they could better understand if there are cultural biases to their questions.

Student performance and trends on their writing samples throughout the years since many of our tests are moving to document based and long passages (even in science.) So more examples of student work in addition to the aggregated, disaggregated, strand, & item data listed above.
