SET UP EXPECTATIONS

● Say: Welcome to Kids’ Club, we’re so glad to have you here! We want this to be a safe and fun place for you. To do that, let’s all commit to doing a few things:

○ Show respect to each other○ Listen when someone else is speaking○ Have fun!

INTRODUCE THE BIG IDEA

● Ask: Around here, we talk a lot about a guy named Jesus–why is that? (Let kids respond.) Yep, he’s God’s Son who came here to rescue us and bring us close to God!

● Ask: If you’ve heard stories about Jesus before, how would you describe him? (Let kids respond.) Great answers! Jesus was a lot of things–powerful, loving, perfect–but today, we’re going to talk about one thing in particular about his life. Jesus was LIKE US! He was born as a baby and he had to learn how to walk and talk. He played games, had friends and brothers and sisters, and he was a kid like you are right now!

● Say: So here’s today’s BIG IDEA: Jesus knows what it’s like to be us.

JESUS WAS LIKE US

● Say: Jesus experienced all the good and bad parts of life. He laughed and cried and even got angry. There are all kinds of stories in the Bible that tell us about this, so we’re going to watch a video and see some of the regular, everyday things that Jesus went through. As you watch, figure out one way that Jesus was like YOU!

● Video: God’s Story / Jesus Was Like Us (4 minutes)● Say: Put up one finger if you found at LEAST one way that

Jesus was like you. (Let kids respond.) Yep, there’s lots of ways! Was anybody else surprised at how many things Jesus did just like us? (Let kids respond.)

● Ask: You know what makes me feel so glad that Jesus is like us? He’s knows what’s it like to be sad. Everyone show me a sad face! (Let kids respond.) He knows what’s like to feel mad. Everyone make an angry face! (Let kids respond.) And he knows what it’s like to be happy! Let’s all give our happiest smile! (Let kids respond.)

● Say: I don’t know about you, but it makes me feel so much better to know that I’m never alone in my feelings. That I have a loving rescuer who knows exactly how I feel. How does that make you guys feel? (Let kids respond.)

● Say: Now let’s have some fun looking at the ways Jesus was just like us, and some ways that he was different!

PREPARE

● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer● Split kids in small groups or stay in one large group.

HOW TO PLAY

● Say: Tell kids that we’re going to act out some things that Jesus did….some of them are things that WE do, and some of them aren’t!

● Using the list below, ask kids if each thing is something Jesus did that’s like us, or NOT like us. If it’s like us, have them go to one side of the room. If it’s not like us, have them go to the other side of the room (Return to the middle each time):

● Like us, or not like us?○ Jesus had parents, brothers, sisters and cousins. ○ Jesus played and had fun.○ Jesus used his power to heal people (make sick/hurt

people all better)○ Jesus ate food○ Jesus calmed a scary storm by telling it to stop○ Jesus went to parties and hung out with his friends○ Jesus fed 5000 people with just a few pieces of bread

and fish○ Jesus felt sad sometimes○ Jesus was born as a baby○ Jesus died, and came back to life (to rescue us!)

● Extra fun: If the action is something that kids could act out, have them act it out before you move on to the next action!

PREPARE

● Start the 10-Minute Countdown Timer.● Break into small groups.

RESPOND TO THE GAME

● Say: Tell kids that we’re going to think about what makes it so fun….to be a KID!

● Set out markers and a large piece of tear-off paper, have kids write down and draw all things they enjoy doing or things they like in general. (Things they do because they’re kids, like playing on a playground, playing sports, going to school, games, being silly, drawing, dress up, etc.)

● Then ask: ○ Which of these things do you think Jesus liked doing? ○ What else do you think he liked to do for fun?○ Did Jesus go through hard things too? What were they?

JESUS KNOWS US INSIDE AND OUT

● Say: Let’s look at a verse from the Bible that describes Jesus. It’s from a book called Hebrews, and as we read, you’ll notice there’s a special title: “high priest”. That may sound a little strange, but in the Bible, it’s a really special name for Jesus! Let’s check it out:

● Slide: Hebrews 4:15 We have a high priest who can feel it when we are weak and hurting. We have a high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are. But he did not sin.

● Say: Here’s what this verse tells us!○ Jesus understands exactly how we feel when we’re

weak, or hurting, or lonely, because he himself had those feelings. If you’re glad that he shares those feelings with us, give me a thumbs up!

○ Jesus knows how hard it is to be tempted to make wrong choices. The difference between him and us though, is that he never sinned! If you’re glad that he is a perfect, powerful God who shows us how we should live, give me two thumbs up!

● Say: Jesus was NEVER selfish or greedy or mean. He NEVER hurt anybody. He was perfect, he never made a wrong choice, and he followed God every single day.

RESPONSE TIME

● Ask: Right now, think of one thing you’ve felt recently–sadness, anger, happiness–and imagine how Jesus might have felt that way too. As we do that, let’s watch a music video called “He Knows Me”, that’s all about how Jesus loves us and knows us inside and out.

● Music Video: KC Acoustic / He Knows Me

WORSHIP AND PRAYER

● Say: Let’s worship Jesus with a more upbeat dance song! You can stand up, clap, show off some dance moves, and sing along as we give Jesus all our attention and energy.

● Music Video: Be Strong● Music Video (Optional/Alternative): I Am Yours● Pray: Invite a kid up to pray!

SMALL GROUPS

Time: 15 minutes (or until parent pick up)

Big Idea: Jesus knows what it’s like to be us.

Next Step: Choose one way you’ll try to be like Jesus.

Supplies: ● Verse template

(1/kid)● Markers (1 set)● Snowflake stickers

(2/kid)

EXTRA TIME?

● Give kids maze and word-search activity sheets to work on until their parents pick them up.

ICEBREAKER QUESTION

● Break into small groups. Go around the group and let every kid answer this question: What’s your favorite board game OR video game?

RESPOND TO THE STORY

● What things do you do, that Jesus did? What kinds of things would he do if he were a kid today?

● Do you think Jesus felt sad when he was your age? What makes you feel sad? What other emotions do you experience that Jesus did too?

● What’s the one MAIN difference between us as kids and Jesus as a kid? (Jesus never made wrong choices; he was perfect.)

● Jesus had all of God’s power, but became a man and even died for us. Why did he do that?

MAKE IT PERSONAL

● Say: If Jesus was like us, then that means we can be like HIM too! Even though none of us are perfect, we can try to follow him every day, and live like he would live.

● Give each kid a verse template and set out markers. On one side of the card is Hebrews 4:15. Read it together a group! (To help kids remember it better have them repeat short chunks of the verse after you, but in a funny voice!

○ Hebrews 4:15 We have a high priest who can feel it when we are weak and hurting. We have a high priest who has been tempted in every way, just as we are. But he did not sin.

● This week’s next step is to choose one way you’ll try to be like Jesus.

○ Let kids write/draw or illustrate their next step on the other side of their verse card. Kids will need help coming up with this, so give them examples of ways they could follow Jesus and be like him this week!

■ Some examples to help kids get started: Do a chore for a family member, tell someone a kind thing to make them feel better, etc.

○ Give them 2 snowflake stickers and let them further decorate and color the back of their verse card.

○ They can put this at home (somewhere they can see it everyday and be reminded how they want to be like Jesus this week).

PRAY

● Ask kids if there’s anything they want you to pray for, and then pray as a group.
