On a very wet and windy day in
May, the Wigston Band
Organisation enjoyed a day out
to the ‘Brass on the Grass’
contest (previously Woodfarm).
Both the Enterprise and Senior
Bands enjoyed performing on
the day.
The Seniors were the first band
to kick off Wigston’s
appearances. Even though
fighting against the rain that was
pattering against the gazebo, the
band put in solid performances
of ‘Horizons’, ‘Esha Ness’ and
‘Manhattan Skyline’. Our
programme intended to evoke
thoughts of glorious land and
seascapes with ‘Erin Shore’
delightfully conjuring images of
the Scottish Highlands. The
adjudicators recognised our
attempts amongst a challenging
field giving us a 3rd placing.
The Enterprise later took to the
stage, performing a tricky
programme under quite
challenging, weather related
circumstances. They enjoyed
playing ‘Pirates of the
Caribbean’, ‘Nearer my God to
Thee’ and a wonderful solo by
Alex with “Georgia on my Mind”.
The audience especially enjoyed
the antics and rubber chicken
masquerading as a duck in

‘Swanee River’! All in all, once
the bands had played and the
beer was flowing, it was a very
enjoyable outing, although
everyone was a little damp by
home time!
Notes from the Editor As you can see The Wigson Band Organisation has been extremely busy over the past couple of months and there is far too much news to put into a single edition of Bum Notes! We’ve had lots of comings and goings (welcome to all of our new members and good luck to all those going on new adventures) and some very pleasing music exam results (well done to you all).
We have got lots more events and concerts coming up soon so please check out our diary and website. We would like to thank you for our continued support and it would be great to see you again soon!
If you would like to be added to the email list, then please email Abi at: [email protected]
As you will know, The Wigston
Band is a registered charity and
we survive solely on the
proceeds we make at our
concerts and your very kind
donations. As such, it is
sometimes a little difficult to
make ends meet, purchase new
music and ensure our
instruments are in full working
order!
Therefore, we need your help!
We are looking for companies or
individuals who would be happy
to sponsor us in order to help
keep our historical organisation
alive!
You can choose to sponsor an
individual—maybe someone you
have heard and would like to
hear more of in the future. Or
how about offer a monthly
donation to your favourite
section—being a horn player
myself then that would be a
good one to go for, knowing
how hard we work! Or how
about sponsoring our uniforms
to make sure we always look our
best! It is up to you!
All sponsorship donations are
welcome and we will ensure that
your company details or name
gets published within Bum Notes
and in all of our concert
programmes. We may also be
able to sort out free tickets to
concerts and CDs as a special
thank you to you for helping
with The Wigston Bands
survival.
To get yourself involved with
this sponsorship opportunity,
contact the band on:

We thank you in advance for your continued support.

It seems that The Senior Band
love playing in the rain as they
did a hugely enjoyable
performance at Hinckley
Golf Club for thier proms
event. And, yes, it was a
very rainy night but we
did not let it dampen our
spirits!
The band performed a range of
classics including ‘Myfanwy’,
wonderfully performed by Dave
Harrold, ‘Born Free’ and
‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. One
piece saw the audience jump to
their feet, along with umbrella’s
to dance along to the very aptly
named ’Singing in the Rain’.
Later the band were joined on
stage by the very talented
singers Linda Perry-Smith and
Chris Marlow. They added an
extra dimension for ‘Memory’
and ‘All I Ask of You’ before
leading the sing along for the
Proms finale. This was espe-
cially interesting when the fire-
works starting going off, mak-
ing the whole of the band jump
while they tried to play “Pomp
and Circumstance”. MD Chris
Small’s face was a picture when
the hugest “boom” went off!
The band love performing at a
wide range of events, so feel
free to contact us if you have
something we can join you

For a number of years The
Wigston Band has enjoyed the
presence of
Gary Perrin
(formally Little
Gary) and all of
his wise
cracking
humour. We are
pleased to
congratulate Gary, not once but
twice in this edition of Bum
Notes.
Firstly, Gary left the band
temporarily to attend university
at Huddersfield studying music.
We always knew that Gary was a
talented fellow and he proved
himself by graduating with a 2:1
this summer.
Secondly, the band is very
excited to congratulate Gary on
his recent engagement to his
girlfriend Cattie who is often
seen supporting Gary from the
audience at Wigston Band
events. We wish them both a
happy future together.
Congratulations! Congratulations!

In August The Wigston Band had
great fun at Twycross Zoo for their
Summer Sundown event.
The band was pleased to play a
range of brass band classics and
modern pieces to the huge
audience. They especially enjoyed
the rather suitable renditions of
‘Born Free’ and ‘Swinging Safari’.
We would like to thank Garry
Sleath for his guest appearance
conducting at this concert—we
said he wouldn't be gone for long!

May was a very busy month for
The Wigston Band as the very
next day following ‘Brass on the
Grass’ the Senior Band were out
at University of Leicester Botanic
Gardens performing to a huge
audience on a much sunnier day
than the previous one!
The band performed a range of
traditional brass band music
before then showing off how
versatile a brass band can be
with a selection of music from
various popular movies. For
example, the audience loved the
rousing horn trio by Matt, Abi
and Rachel of ‘I Won’t Say I’m In
Love’ from the Disney classic
Hercules. The band then went on
to slow the pace down with
‘Schindler’s List’ and ’Edelweiss’.
All in all it was a very
enjoyable afternoon and
we look forward to being
asked back to the Botanic
Gardens for what is
certainly becoming an
annual collaboration.

NotesNotes
The Enterprise and Horizon
Bands have enjoyed
collaborating to do a number of
events recently. The most
enjoyable of these (mainly due
to the free food) was the Oadby
and Wigston Big
Lunch held on
Bell Street in
Wigston.
On a boiling hot day, the band
set up at the top of the street
and played a range of pieces to
entertain the masses enjoying
their free
lunches.
The whole
event was
aimed at
getting the community together
and allowing everyone to get to
know what organisations are
around to help those who need
it.
Although the band did get
rather warm, the event was
highly enjoyable and it was nice
to be able to perform within our
own community for the people
of the community.

Every now and then The
Wigston Band likes to get
members from all of our
bands together to work
together to learn from each
other and develop our music
skills. This year’s event was a
huge success with all of our
younger musicians getting to
know the more
experienced ones a
little better through the
group teaching
sessions prior
to an amazing
massed concert
to parents.
