We have been quite fortunate with the weather as we continue to have a few warm days. The implementation of the national testing last week was a very smooth process (NAPLAN). All students were encouraged to do their very best and teachers supported students to ensure this type of testing did not cause undue anxiety. Thank you to Mrs Powers (primary) and Mrs Treveil (secondary) for coordinating this process and to all teachers who supported their students during the testing dates 9 th 11 th of May. Students have also recently participated in the DE&T ‘Attitudes to School Survey’ which I administered from Year 5-9. All public schools in Victoria are mandated to administer this survey. The overall objective of the annual Attitudes to School survey is to collect data about the opinions of students from Years 5 to 12 to assist schools with planning, developing curriculum and supporting students. The survey assists schools to gain an understanding of students’ perceptions and their experience of school. It provides schools with valuable data on students’ views of their wellbeing, teaching, learning and school in general. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of July. At Timbarra, the results also give us the opportunity to celebrate the great achievements we have made together as well as strive for continual improvement in areas that need to be strengthened or modified. All students were respectful during this time and had valuable insights in discussions we had after each level completed their surveys. It was also a great opportunity for me to chat to each year level and gain insight into how students are feeling about school. It is always a positive time and students are open and honest in their discussions which is greatly appreciated. Monday marked the start of ‘Education Week’ at Timbarra. The theme for this year is ‘Technology. Explore Your Future’. The importance of children engaging with technology throughout their education journey is the focus this week. In addition, we are encouraging parents to explore technology with your children during this time. A timetable was sent out via our Skoolbag App inviting parents/guardians to share in some of our themed activities in each classroom P-6. We welcome all visitors to our open classroom sessions ‘to be intrigued and inspired by technology’. As previously stated in earlier newsletters, schooling is compulsory for children and young people aged from 6 – 17 years unless an exemption from attendance or enrolment has been granted. Daily school attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they don’t fall behind both socially and developmentally. Children and young people who regularly attend school and complete Year 12 or an equivalent qualification have better health outcomes, better employment outcomes, and higher incomes across their lives. It is important that children develop habits of regular attendance at an early age. We continue to have a number of students who arrive late to school (often DATES TO REMEMBER Vol 17 Issue 06, Wednesday, May 18, 2016 daily). We ask for your support in ensuring that your child arrives punctually each day, to ensure minimal disruption to the start of class / homeroom, where important information is disseminated. The Year 3-6 ‘Athletics Day’ was very successful. It was a great opportunity for all students to dress up in their house colours, relax, have fun, as well as some healthy competition! We were also very fortunate with the weather with only a little cooling drizzle of rain later in the day. Thank you to Mr Ciccarelli for organising this event. The Year 6 ‘Notable Australians’ evening last night was a fantastic event. The students work was to be commended, from their costumes, information that they have researched, their displays and artifacts collected. It was a huge turn out as the learning spaces were transformed into a museum of our most loved Australian icons such as Steve Irwin, Dr. Fiona Wood, Adam Goodes, Sir Don Bradman, Rosie Batty, Julia Gillard and Sir John Monash. Thank you to families and visitors who helped to make this such a special night for everyone! Our secondary annual ‘Jobskills Workshops’ will take place on Tuesday the 24 th of May for all Year 9 students. These workshops are created and developed to provide our students with basic skills in self- marketing when seeking part time or casual employment. Some of the skills taught on the day include; writing techniques, resume writing, online applications, telephone calling techniques, self-presentations skills, interview techniques and the realities of work through role playing. Hands on Training Group have been facilitating these workshops for over 16 years and we are fortunate to have them facilitate such a successful workshop each year. It is just fantastic to see our students dress professionally for the day and take feedback seriously as they are positively critiqued throughout the day. Another diary date to remember is this Friday (20 th of May) ‘National Walk Safely to School Day’. Now in its 17th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. Please remember that invoice/receipts go out every 2 weeks, so your next

invoice will be out on: Wednesday, 25th May 2016

IMPORTANT: Also, please make sure that you all continue to pay a

portion of your fees weekly so that it keeps your costs down, or keeps

you in credit.

Parents who have Children who have a permanent booking, you will

receive your invoices via our Parent Pockets that are on the wall in

the foyer at OSHC. So please make sure that you check these pockets

every fortnight for your invoices & any other updates or information.

All casual bookings will still have their invoices sent through the

classroom, so please check your child’s bag or if it is not in there,

check with their teacher.

FEES – IMPORTANT!

Please make sure that you are keeping up to date with paying your fees, as

Bookings for Vacation Care will be coming up in the next 3 weeks and if

your fees are $100 or over, we cannot book your child/ren in until this has

been paid.

The program is funded solely by these fees coming in and all materials,

food and staff payments come out of these, so in order that the program

continues to operate at a high level, fees need to be paid on a regular basis.

It is a part of our policy that states places will be suspended if fees are not

being paid regularly.

We appreciate your support in this matter. Any queries, please speak to

Lisa.

CURRICULUM DAY

6pm

(NO BREAKFAST IS SERVED ON THIS DAY)

If you need care on this day, you will need to come down to the OSHC

program and pick up a booking form.

If your child has a normal permanent booking on a Friday, this booking

does for Before or After School Care, this does not apply on a Curriculum

Day, so you will still need to fill in a separate booking form if you need

care for this Curriculum Day.

If you have never been to the program before you will also need to fill out

an Enrolment Form before you can book your child/ren in.

National Walk Safely to School Day

This is an annual event across Australia aimed at improving the

health and wellbeing of children, as well as road safety awareness

and environmental benefits.

The aim of this day is to have as many parents and carers in our

school community walk to school with their primary aged students

to reinforce safe behaviour and a healthy lifestyle.

We are encouraging as many people within our school community

to get involved on National Walk Safely to School Day. Walking to

school is a great way to kick start the day for all the family, some

benefits

include;

Teaches road safety

Enables you to enjoy outdoors

Makes kids healthier and fitter

It’s a fun, interesting and sociable

experience

It’s free!

HEAD LICEHEAD LICEHEAD LICE

We have had a few cases of head lice

reported and we encourage parents to be vigilant in

checking their child’s hair. If detected the child needs

to be treated before they can return to school. The child

also needs to be retreated 7 days later, this is to be in

case not all lice were killed or removed during the first

treatment. We encourage all parents to regularly check

their child’s hair and to contact the school if an out-

break occurs. Contacting the school allows us to notify

all parents of that class about an outbreak (no names are

mentioned), so they can check their child’s hair and treat

accordingly if head lice are found.

Pamphlets on how to treat head lice are available from

Sick Bay or you can go on the Department of Health’s

website; www.health.vic.gov.au/headlice

The incidence of head lice would be reduced signifi-

cantly if this quick check was undertaken weekly.

We thank you for your help with this matter.

Special Annual Whole School Event - 2015

2016 - our most popular day! We are about to host our first session for our traditional ‘Gizmo’s and Gadgets Day’. All students are invited to bring along their treasures for a supervised class session will be held between 11:40am and 1:50pm on Thursday 23rd June. A great way to end the term!

Some items that children may like to bring along are:

Smart phones D.S IPads IPods / touch Favourite board games Transformers

These types of items are normally not permitted at school; however we know how much children like to share their hobbies and personal collections, so we have set aside this special time to –

Enjoy iPods – share favourite gadgets - ‘tinker with treasures’!

During this session students will be encouraged to talk about their favourite collectables and gadgets and how their interest started. It is a great opportunity for students to share similar outside school hobbies and collections. The teachers might even be encouraged to start the session by sharing what they used to collect as a child.

Based on past experiences, it is sure to be a great way to end the term!

NOTE: Primary student’s personal gadgets will be locked in the classroom office during school times and not given back until home time. Secondary students will be expected to place their personal items in their locker for safe keeping.

Linda Duncanson (wellbeing)
