I was lucky to be one of these students. We did a total of four activities which were all very interesting to all of us. We were learning together with other students from other schools, also a few students from John Monash were there to help us, they explained all the experiments to us and showed us in detail about the experiments . It was a great feeling being at John Monash and having this opportunity to learn about science and do all these experiments. One of the experiments was Exploring Shape Memory Alloys. We put three different types of metals into boiling hot water to see if the shape would change as we had put the metals into shapes. The metals were copper, steel and nitinol wire. When we put the copper and steel wires into the boiling water nothing happened, however, when we out the nitinol wire into the boing water it straightened. Some metals have the ability to change to a remembered shape when they are heated. This is due to changes in phase. Usually we think of phase changes as changes in the physical state of a material. The particles in some metals can change their arrangement slightly while remaining a solid. This movement of particles on the nanoscale pulls the metal back into its original shape when heated. I can’t wait to go there again and learn more about science. A Day at the Shrine On Tuesday, 12th April, the grade sixes visited the Shrine of Remembrance Museum. Caroline,

the tour guide, told us about WW1 and the ANZACs. Soldiers as young as 14 signed up for the army because they thought it would be an adventure. Following the film, Caroline asked for volunteers. Three boys dressed as soldiers and Grace dressed as a nurse. I dressed in a khaki buttoned coat and a slouch hat. I also wore a hard hat and a rainproof coat. Deng wore a heavy backpack and Riley had a shovel and a pickaxe. Items such as canned fruit, jam and beef, and hard biscuits were passed around. I enjoyed the excursion. Although I am a scout, I learned even more about WW1 and the ANZACs. Every child in grade 6 should visit the Shrine and know about Australia’s history. Jai 5/6TS

S ports Shorts—Swimming News Congratulations are extended to Jack Howell who, having swum last term in the regional swimming

finals, progressed through to the state finals this week! Jack swam in the State Swimming Carnival on Wednesday. As you can appreciate, the standard of swimming at state level is very tough. Jack swam in two events, freestyle and backstroke. He won the freestyle final and he achieved a personal best time of 42.90. In the backstroke event Jack also won and again he swam a

personal best time of 50.20. This is a remarkable achievement for Jack. His results have enabled him to reach the national championships which will be held in Darwin later on this year. Congratulations to Jack. The school community is very proud of your achievements in the pool and we wish you well in the national championships.

P remiers’ Reading Challenge The Premiers’ Reading Challenge [PRC] was launched on 16 March! Foundation to Grade 2

need to experience 30 books while Grade 3 onwards need to read 15 age appropriate books. We are happy to announce that as parental consent forms are no longer required for children to participate in the PRC; unless parents would like their child’s name on the online honour roll, we will once again achieve 100% participation!!

U nauthorised Parking and Use of Facilities This week, representatives of the Maternal Care Centre and the Brentwood Park Kindergarten

contacted the school to inform us that a Work Safe Order was imposed upon them due to unsafe practices related to cars entering and leaving their car park! A work safe officer observed parents from Brentwood Park Primary using their car park and observed a near miss of

a child being hit by a car. Please do not park in the Maternal Care Centre/Kindergarten Car Park or use their facility to drop off children prior to school. The first five parking bays outside our front gate are designated for this purpose.

‐ Symmetry

Year 3 Maths

The sun was shining, the birds were singing and the Year 3 students were

totally engaged in their outside Mathema cs lesson.  Last week, we made

the  most  of  our  wonderful  vegetable  garden  to  explore  symmetry  in

nature.  The  students  found,  sketched  and  drew  a  line  of  symmetry  on

objects that they found in nature and around the school.

Keep up the good work Year 3—you are amazing!

LEARNING GOAL: To represent data visually. How can we show a large group of data visually to make it easier to read. SUCCESS CRITERIA: Create stem and leaf plots. This week year 6 students thought the study of stem and leaf plots was very cool! Stem and leaf plots are used when a mathematician needs to show a large group of data visually. The students were given the example of science test results (out of 100) of 25 students. The scores were: 65,54,73,91,42,75,81,96,98,76,65,43,74,76,88,58,83,90,69,60,51,80,44, 77,99. The stem and leaf plot shows the data visually: Stem Plot

1MC — You Can Do it! — Getting Along

This week, 1MC had fun participating in role plays focussing on the ‘Getting Along’ component of the whole school ‘You Can Do It’ program. When questioned about why getting along with others is so important, students replied; ‘So we can learn,’ ‘So we can make new friends,’ and ‘So we can be happy!’ The children practised their getting along skills in groups by acting out various scenarios promoting teamwork, co-operation and friendship. Students then displayed their creative skills by making ’Getting Along Dolls’ out of popsicle sticks and craft paper. Finally, the children enjoyed creating their own school based scenarios where they practised their skills and utilised their dolls as characters.

P LEASE DIRECT MONEY FOR EXCURSIONS, ETC TO YOUR CLASSROOM TEACHER - NOT TO THE OFFICE. Please hand money and permission slip in sealed envelopes to classroom teacher first thing in the morning. By following this process teachers are aware that your child will be attending the excursion and mark them

off their lists. Money is collected by office staff and processed each morning and a receipt given back to teachers along with permission slips. All money is tallied and banked daily – no money is left on the premises. If you wish to pay by credit card, a proforma is available from the office. This can be filled out with details and placed in a sealed envelope and handed to your classroom teacher

Please deliver cash in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and grade on the front by 9.30 a.m. If you have a number of children attending an excursion you can place all money and permission slips in the one envelope with children’s names and grades on the front and deliver to one of the children’s teachers. The office staff will be able to allocate money to the children’s particular items and distribute permission slips and receipts back to teachers. Enve-lopes are available at the office. If you have a large amount to be paid or need to process an EFTPOS transaction through a savings account you can make arrangements to pay at the office. We also have a new Qkr payment system on our Skoolbag app. If you download our Skoolbag app and Qkr payment app you can now pay for your child’s excursion on line.

All change will be delivered to the children in the afternoon. Re-imbursements will only be made under certain circumstances – they will be made by cheque (no cash transactions are made).

Notices are sent out with a final collection time – please adhere to this time. All money and permission slips are re-quired to be sent back by this date – otherwise your child will not be able to attend. This enables us to confirm book-ings and numbers with bus companies and organisations we are visiting. Also we need to send details to the Depart-ment of Education Emergency Management for all excursions, camps, etc. We also need to accommodate students who will not be attending.

We would appreciate it if parents could please follow these processes.
