DATES TO REMEMBER

Just a reminder to parents that you are to report to the OFFICE when entering the school. We

ask that you do not interrupt class time by reporting to the classroom, unless you have

checked in at the office first. During recess time, please report to the office. We ask that you do not go onto the playground

to speak to or take your child. All children leaving the school must be signed out in the

office by an adult.

ELDER VISIT

On November 9th, an elder came to talk to us about the Medicine Wheel. She was from the Aboriginal culture and her name is Mrs. Blind. She taught us about the medicine circle and what it means to the Aboriginal people. It was pretty cool to learn about. She taught us about the medicines, the ages, the types of people, the elements and Mother Earth. I thought it was cool because I knew nothing about the Aboriginal culture so I learned a lot. I had a lot of fun learning about it. Danika R. (grade 4)

On November 9th Mrs. Blind visited us and taught us about the Medicine Wheel. I was a volunteer who got to hold the gift of tobacco. The tobacco was very soft and fuzzy. Mrs. Blind was nice to me as she explained the important items in her culture. Andrew T. (grade 3)

On November 9th, we had a visitor. She was an elder from the Aboriginal culture. Her name is Mrs. Blind. She taught us about the Medicine Wheel with Mother Earth in the middle. She showed us the 4 medicines: tobacco, sweet grass, sage and cedar. It was cool how all things come in 4 and each are positioned in the circle with the directions of Earth. When Mrs. Blind was in our class everything was the same thing my family does too., but in a different way, and I learned about a different First Nations. Naima (grade 5)

When Mrs. Blind came to our class I learned in order to become an elder you must carry buffalo skulls around a lodge. When she did it she carried one. But she saw other carrying up to four. I’m glad she came, I learned so much. Faith (grade 5)

These are the things I learned about when Mrs. Blind the Elder came. • Learned about the belly button • Talked about different kinds of

ceremonies that the first nation people do • Talked about different kinds of

instruments they made like drums made out of leather.

• We talked about the Buffalo skull. You

have to carry it around on your back and take laps when people are cheering and supporting you.

Students from Valleyview Youth Revolution were busy volunteering at the Santa Parade. They were smiling and waving as they passed out candy to the many children along the parade route. We saw many parents,

friends, and families along the way. It was a ton of fun! Some of us even got to follow with Santa at the end! Way to go Valleyview!
