SCHOOL CALENDARMAY 2016

As I always say, our students are our best ambassadors and I am sure that on this trip like many others that came before, our students will represent us in an admirable way.

I look forward to hearing about their experience on their return.

Whole School Assembly

The Semester 1 Whole School Assembly took place on Wednesday 22 June at 9:00 am. During this assembly we highlighted the school value of Social and Environmental Responsibility and aligned this with the importance of Reconciliation and our understanding of the indigenous culture of the land on which we gather each day to learn. This was a special assembly planned and organised by our two school leaders: Brock Manson (Year 12, Everard House) and Ruby Zogopoulos (Year 12, Andrew House) in collaboration with the Nillumbik Reconciliation Group. A range of guest speakers and performers communicated their views, feelings and culture to us. It was a great morning and it was fantastic to have representatives from the Nillumbik Reconciliation group taking part.

End of Term Arrangements

As the end of Term Two draws near I take this opportunity to wish Miss Michele Bregar all the very best as she embarks on a period of leave for the remainder of the year. I wish her well in her endeavours and look forward to her return in 2017. A replacement to take over Miss Bregar’s classes has been appointed and will be on deck from day 1, Term 3.

I also wish Ms Sha Shukor and her husband all the very best as she moves into a period of Parental leave awaiting the birth of her second child. A replacement for Ms Shukor’s Teaching role will be appointed in the next couple of days and the vacancy she leaves in the Junior School Coordination Team has already been filled. We look forward to hearing about the new addition to Ms Shukor’s family.

Finally I wish Katrina Kelly (Integration Department) all the very best in her new job outside of the school. Katrina has been associated with our school for many years; as a parent, a volunteer and as a paid staff member. I take this opportunity to thank Katrina for all her work as a member of the Integration Team and I do wish her well as she embarks on this new venture.

As is the case with each last day of term, school will conclude at 2:30 pm. I ask all parents to ensure that appropriate travel arrangements are put in place for students to accommodate the early dismissal.

I take this opportunity to wish all the students and staff a very relaxing break. Whilst I know that senior students are required to undertake some work and study it is also very important that they have a decent break prior to beginning Term 3. I ask all students to keep themselves safe and I look forward to seeing everyone back on the first day back, the 11th of July.

Note of condolences

I extend the most sincere condolences of the Eltham High School Community to Mrs Nimma Sagar and her family on the recent loss of their mother. Our thought and prayers are with the family at this very sad time.

2017 Course Planning - Year Level Information Nights 2016

In the first few weeks of Term 3 there will be a number of important information evenings for students in Years 8, 9 and 10. The purpose of these sessions is to inform students of the pathways available to them in 2017 and how to go about selecting them.

The sessions will ensure that students get information that is accurate and consistent, have a chance to hear from their peers who are currently undertaking courses at the relevant year level and a chance to have questions answered.

It is important that all students along with a family member attend the session relevant to their Year Level so that they can make informed decisions as they move towards 2017. Should you have any queries regarding the sessions (see the times and dates listed below) please do not hesitate to contact the relevant sub school leader: Ross McKinnon (Middle School) or Anna Panas (Senior School)

Year 9 Program: Step Back, Think

As you would be aware, at Eltham High School great importance is placed on our core school values which continually guide our work with students.

As part of the Year 9 Program all students will participate in a ‘Step Back Think’ session which will take place on Thursday, 23 June. Step Back Think are a not-for-profit organisation focused on the prevention of social violence. Their mission is to drive cultural change to end social violence and is guided by three pillars: Education, Awareness, and Partnerships & Advocacy. They take a public health approach to the prevention of social violence by educating young people, raising awareness, and creating change at an institutional level. In particular, the session will focus on what the media has termed the ‘coward punch’ and how it changes lives forever.

A typical Step Back Think presentation includes:

•Two diff erent stories about victims of assault;

•What happens to the human brain when it is damaged;

•The consequences for both the victim and perpetrator; and

•Helping students understand how they can make a diff erence in reducing social violence.

We believe this session will be of great value to our students, providing a valuable opportunity to raise awareness of the prevalence and lasting eff ects of aggressive and violent behaviour, and how as members of their community they can support change. As such it is a compulsory element of the Year 9 Program. Further information on Step Back Think can be found at:

http://stepbackthink.org/

If there are extenuating circumstances as to why you believe this may not be the right time for your child to deal with material of this nature, please immediately make contact with Cameron Laurence, Student Growth and Leadership Leader at [email protected].

We thank you in anticipation of your support.

Cameron Laurence, Student Growth and Leadership Leader

SPORT

Year 7 and 8 Timetabled Sport

Students in Year 7 and 8 participate in one ‘Sport’ class each week. This is separate from the Physical Education classes.

Over the past few weeks, we have seen a huge increase in students failing to bring their PE uniform to Sport.

It is an expectation that ALL students bring and change into their EHS PE uniform. Students who do not change are kept behind for a short detention at lunchtime. We ask for your support with the following:

• Students to bring PE uniform to Sport

• Unwell or injured students should bring a signed note from home

• NO mobile phones/laptops etc to be brought to Sport

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Nic Cooper or Ms Bree Pascoe at school.

DRAMA

Liv Smith (Year 12F Stewart, Senior Drama and Scrambled Prince member) has written and directed the next performance for Scrambled Prince, the school’s elite touring theatre company. I’d Turn Back is an amazing play about the plight of refugees. Working through the Salvation Army’s Asylum Seeker Project, Liv spent November and December meeting with refugees in the community and in detention. The show is based on their stories. Scrambled Prince members Michael Jukes (12F Stewart), Oliver Zagorski (12E Rutter), Tess Hider (9E Stewart) and Chrissie Fitzmaurice (11A Andrew) join Liv in the cast, and music for the show has been composed and performed by music teacher Gabrielle Piras. The performance is intense, moving physical theatre exploring some very challenging and important themes. The play is an amazing testament to the talent and hard work of all involved, but particularly Liv Smith.

The Premiere of this show will be on Wednesday 22 June at the Salvation Army 828 Sydney Road North Coburg at 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

This show will also feature as one of a suite of 3 plays the school will present at the 2016 Melbourne Fringe Festival in September, and the Adelaide Fringe Festival in February 2017. These plays will be I’d Turn Back with Scrambled Prince, Ceremony of the innocent (junkyard opera based on the Children’s crusade) with Scrambled Prince, and What I Learned at the Big School, (a year 7 Odyssey) with our Junior touring company, Scrambled Eggs.

SCIENCE

The BrainSTEM Program

All was revealed on Presentation Day – where all the participating schools shared their research and experiences.

With Professor Paul Stoddart as their mentor, Josh Kammerhofer (10F stewart), Marianna Saill-Dilnot (10F Stewart), Sebastian Ransley-Raven (10C Everard) and Nathan Wall (10F stewart) presented their entertaining and informative research into a method to measure blood pressure, by using blood oxygen levels and optical detection, a method that is non-invasive and doesn’t rely on blowing up a bag on someone’s arm. Who was Samuel von Basch? He was the physician who invented the method of blowing up a bag: the sphygmomanometer, way back in 1881.

The Scotch College team examined indigenous medicine, using “weeping emu bush” for septic wounds.

The girls from Camberwell Girls Grammar researched a dance assistant band – a wristband that vibrates to a musical beat.

The team from Vermont Secondary College observed the urban heat eff ect around Swinburne and their own school.

The students from Melbourne High looked at microfabrication of surgical equipment using gold etching.

Mount Waverley Secondary College students had the task of assessing alternative food sources, in their case: mealworms – insects. Yum!

Lastly, the team from Alphington Grammar put forward the design of a self-regulating plant that waters itself.

Planning for the 3rd BrainSTEM Innovation Challenge has now commenced, and sometime during term 3, we’ll be looking for some more students to get involved in this fantastic program!
