Stranded (Part 1-5)(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Part 1 - IsolationPart 2 - DeliriumPart 3 - March Of The MachinesPart 4 - Source SublimePart 5 - The Darkness

Sudden isolationA lone forgotten nameThe wind will blow the dust of greed and shame Stranded in a wastelandWon’t be crawling backWe have to face the void for what we lack

A wave of evolution moves across the sandAll will be forgiven only some will understand

I am not your conscience I am not your trashYou gravely made the trade for petty cashA lie with no repentance A waiting loaded gunPoised to end the game with anyone

A wave of evolution moves across the sandAll will be forgiven only some will understandOnce the leaves of trees are gone With nothing left to smile uponWe’ll trace our steps back to the dawn Of what is right and wrong

Miles beyond the blinding sun I goNo water in sightJust follow the light and pray for the night

The earth the moon and stars alignThe truth behind façades will shineQuickly shifting paradigm

Reveals the source sublime

Appearing in the distanceSubtle signs of lifeI’ll have to save the strength for another flight

A wave of evolution moves across the sandAll will be forgiven only some will understandOnce the leaves of trees are gone With nothing left to smile uponWe’ll trace our steps back to the dawn Of what is right and wrong

Watching evading the words so degrading the stabs in the back to the start where we are not the sheep nor the shepherd to keep from the leopard who eats out your heart and then takes on the part of the bringer of light and the breaker of dreams lost in the ego’s impossible schemes fuel for the weak becomes paralyzed in paradise multiple deception and gross misconception of rat-like impostors who feed on their own up to what you have done and the seeds you have sown in the darkness of hiding the truth that you’ve known the fearful believers will sink like a stone

Follow the lightPray for the night

Into The Sun(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

You put your desires in motionYou took on the risk of the flightKnowing certain danger awaitsIgnoring the flaws of your plightIt’s not right

All systems were go for the missionAll signals inviting the quest Passion goes into orbit Fueled by the fire in your chestIt’s not right

Into the sunFar away from everyoneYou flew too close for what it’s worthAnd you crashed down to earth

The shimmer of blistering starlightBeaming its glamorous eyesYou fell for its warm seductive powerOnly to be eclipsed by its pending demiseSo unwise

Into the sunFar away from everyoneYou flew too close for what it’s worthAnd you crashed down to earth

Into the sunSo far away from everyoneYou knew full well that you’d get burned

Brace yourself for impactHeat shield giving wayQuickly losing contactTransmission ends todayBreaking up in piecesHearts disintegrate

About Francis Dunnery, David Longdon and Heather Findlay Francis Dunnery is a brilliant songwriter and musician. We’ve become good friends and he’s taught me a lot. It was great to have him guest on the title track New World and on Resilience I and II, which has music co-written by the two of us. His beautiful guitar melodies and insanely fast shredding fit so beautifully with my quirky odd time rhythmic chord changes. David Longdon, of the band Big Big Train, lends his voice to two tracks on the Deluxe Edition of New World. On the title track, New World, David joins me with lush backing vocals. On Biodome, David does a spoken voice part the puts a different spin on the lyrics of New World. Similarly, Heather Findlay sings with me on the song Into The Sun while also providing spoken voice parts on The Traveler reprising lyrics from Into The Sun. Heather and I have another music project together called Mantra Vega.

The Lie(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Stories told that slowly came apartFollowing the pulse of a loveless heartYou cannot win the shady game you’ve playedYou hide behind the door In the bed you’ve madeFabricated tales for your charadeA misguided lost crusade

You, you can’t escape the lieNo matter how hard you tryThe future will reveal the reasons whyYou poorly chose to lie

As you’re walking toward the ledgeYou feel a coldness closer to the edgeNever looking back at what you’ve saidNever thinking how it might be readSomeday you will slip up and be shownBeside the guilt you own

You, you can’t escape the lieNo matter how hard you tryThe future will reveal the reasons whyYou poorly chose to lie

About the core band on “New World”: Dave, Fernando and Nick! For my first album as a solo artist, I was fortunate to be joined by some amazing musicians I’ve listened to and admired for years. The core “band” of the album is made up of myself, Fernando Perdomo and Nick D’Virgilio. It was great having Nick behind the kit for most of the album. We used to play together in the 90’s with an artist named Kevin Gilbert in two bands, one called Thud and the other Giraffe. Over the years, Nick has played with some great artists ranging from Tears for Fears to Genesis to Spocks Beard, Big Big Train and many more. His style of drumming is a natural fit with my music. Speaking of natural fit, Fernando Perdomo, who played most of the bass and guitar on the album, shares very similar tastes in music as I do. Working with him on New World was also fantastic. He’s a very melodic player who is as great on the bass as he is on guitar so I ended up having him play a lot on both instruments. I think having Nick and Fern on most of the songs gives New World a certain consistency at the core while providing the foundation for the many colorful contributions from the spectacular musical guests that appear from song to song.

Secret(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Lost in a feelingYour love in my veinsI’m slowly healingNumb from the pain

We used to talkIn endless streamsWe said we’d meet in twilight dreams

But ignited firesWould lose their flameAnd I don’t know who you became You, you have a secretIn language you hide entangled insideYou, you’ve got your reasonsYou’ve made up your mind I’m wasting my timeYou, you have a secret

In brighter timesYour thoughts were mineIn our bubble mirror we were fine

And all the whileYou had your doubtCreeping in to push me out You, you have a secretIn language you hide entangled insideYou, you’ve got your reasonsYou’ve made up your mind I’m wasting my timeYou, you have a secret

Watch what you sayI’m begging you pleaseMy heart’s in your handsAnd I’m down on my knees thinkingWas it even real or just some teaseThe rainbows we areHave been painted grayI’ve done all I can to get you to stayBut the angel by my side has gone astray You, you have a secretIn language you hide entangled insideYou, you’ve got your reasonsYou’ve made up your mind I’m wasting my timeYou, you have a secret Here we are here we areHere we are here we are

Oh how messed up is thisOh how cruel the Universe with its taunting kissAnd all the beautiful days we’ll have to miss

You, you have a secretIn language you hide entangled insideYou, you’ve got your reasonsYou’ve made up your mind I’m wasting my timeYou, you have a secret

About Jason Scheff, Colin Edwin, Russ Parrish, Maryem Tollar, Christine Leakey, Satnam Ramgotra and Ana Cristina I could go on and on about the musicians who contributed to New World. There’s Jason Scheff of the band Chicago who provided lush backing vocals for Stranded and Redemption. Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree provided fretless bass for the song Into The Sun. My other old band mate in Thud, Russ Parrish, joined Nick and I for a virtual reunion in My Old Friend as we hadn’t played together since the mid 90s. On Theta, the elaborate intro to My Old Friend, I also got the chance to feature another brilliant musician from the Thud days, Satnam Ramgotra on tabla. Also joining us on both Theta and My Old Friend was Mayem Tollar, an amazing vocalist who I learned of from Christine Leakey, the multi-talented graphic designer and

recording artist who designed the album packaging and artwork. Christine also provided the operatic vocals for Ocean Of Stars and created the Stranded lyric video. Ana Cristina is responsible for the ethereal voices for Stranded Part 2 Delirium and joined Durga, Jason and I for the big choir of Stranded Part 5 The Darkness.

Under Control (Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Like a needle extracting the sourceA promise given taken by force Your moving finger sculpting my mind Led to believe and follow you blind Seeds of deceit planted under the skinA hidden chip designed to steal from withinBreaking my will so you can play with your toyDistorted pleasure from hope you destroy

I am under controlI am under controlI feel your hands on my soulI am under control

Got a fever sweating it outVultures waiting in the shadows of doubtAt any moment the tables will turn For now I run while the bridges burnI look for shelter from the storming skiesAvoid the watchers with their roving eyesEscape the trance That held my feet to the groundBreak away to where I’ll never be found

I am under controlI am under controlI feel your hands on my soulI am under control

All of this time in crime I played the quiet foolFor all that I am it’s been impossibly cruelAll of what’s mine designed To make a better you To make a better you

I am under controlI am under control I feel your hands on my soulI am under control

A note from DaveEven though all of New World has been recorded in 2014, this really has been a much longer journey to get here. Ever since I was 14 years old, I’ve been immersed in music. I was the kid who had the keyboards and music gear playing “producer” with my musician friends in a garage studio while other kids were throwing eggs at people’s houses. My friends, who were even older than I, would sometimes complain a bit and ask “Wait a minute. Who made you the producer????” to which I replied “Well, I’m the one who knows how to use the recording equipment”. I’ll never forget what my mother said to me when she and my Dad agreed to let me convert the garage into a rehearsal studio or when I got my first synthesizer. She made me promise that I wouldn’t give it up on it after just a few months. I think I’ve come through on that promise!

In the mid-90s, I played keys with a brilliant artist and songwriter named Kevin Gilbert along with Nick D’Virgilio and Russ Parrish. I loved it and learned so much from that experience. Life then took me on a different path when I started up the sound development company, Sonic Reality. I was connecting with high profile artists of all styles of music, but more from a technical and “behind the scenes” production side. While I was still in the music industry, there was a part of me that thought I had given up on my dream of being a music artist and putting out an album featuring my own original songs. Little did I

know that by sampling top musicians and working with producer/mentors like Alan Parsons, Ken Scott, Nick Davis and others, I got to know the fine details about every type and brand of instrument as well as the vintage microphones and recording techniques used to make my favorite classic records.

2010 marked a turning point when I co-wrote the music and lyrics of the album entitled, Dimensionaut with my now former band-mates in the Progressive Rock group Sound of Contact. After parting ways with SOC, , I found myself left to make an important decision. Do I finally step out front and be the lead singer of my own band? What felt right to me was the idea of singing my own lyrics. It was a natural step to take as a writer to express the genuine emotions that emanate from these songs. I had to push the envelope and evolve in my roles as a music artist. Along with that came new challenges.

But, I didn’t give up, despite the many hurdles and road blocks I faced. I was determined to make the best album I could and I was very fortunate to have the support of incredible musicians and engineers, artists, consultants, my family, friends and the wonderful backers of my New World Kickstarter campaign which all helped to make it happen.

To me, success isn’t measured by how many awards you have or what the numbers say. It’s in what impact you’ve made on others and how you may have moved them or affected their lives. Since the release of the Standard Edition of New World, I’ve heard such wonderful stories of people listening to the entire album with their headphones or blasting on their stereo at home so their neighbors could hear it or in the car on a long commute to work or even under water while scuba diving! I’ve heard stories of it lifting people’s spirits during rough times and I have no words to say just how good that makes me feel to think that the music was able to do that. The fact that it has touched people and given them some “fuel for the soul” or another new soundtrack to add to their own life experiences across the globe reminds me of why I wanted to do this in the first place. It’s a privilege to be able to give something of yourself in this way. I once heard a quote “Don’t die with your music still inside you”. I am so pleased to be able to say, after all these years, “mission accomplished”. The best part is that this is only the beginning. Thanks for sharing the ride with me! I hope you enjoy the music for years to come. – Dave “Squids” Kerzner

In The Garden(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Love over-flowing if only for that nightI can’t explain it now but something felt so rightFirst chance encounter we had to make it so In the garden spell we let our feelings show

A shining moment had begun and thenYour weary heart came undone And now you’re gone

One single meeting opened up our coreExploring innocence you had me wanting moreScent ever-lasting I’ve waited for so longGlimpsing heaven I missed the siren’s song A shining moment had begun and thenYour weary heart came undone And now you’re gone

In the garden I’ll meet you in the gardenI’ll see you in the garden Words gave me hope That burned up in your sunLost in hazy dreams melding back to one

A shining moment had begun and thenYour weary heart came undone And now you’re gone In the garden I’ll find you againI’ll meet you in the gardenMeet me

Recurring Dream(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

In recurring dreamsA crowd of silent screamsThe spotlight’s on the stageThere’s no one to engageI’m reaching for the keyBut I’m still chained to meThey try to pull me downExpecting I might drown

Haunting in my sleepThe things we cannot keepI look up at the starsDismissing all my scarsWashing over meA gushing violent seaThey try to pull me downBut I refuse to drown

The Way Out(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

The way out Of this cold and tender trapLeft without a warning Adrift without a mapEach new path in front of meLeads to a hidden doorBehind there is an answerThat I’ll have to question more

The way out Of this long deceiving mazeFrom harmony to madness revolving in a crazeI know that I am ready For a vital change of trackIt’s the old world that I cling toCause I’ll never get it back

Here I stand leaving all behindI’m only a man to be redefinedTaking the risk and flying blind

The way outIs littered with regretLetting go the sorrow wishing to forgetSomething will be sacrificed To the current state we’re inOne phase has to end for another to begin

About Simon Phillips, Billy Sherwood and Keith Emerson For Crossing Of Fates, Fernando and I got to play with a different line up than the rest of the album and it happened to include some incredible musicians we both admire greatly. Billy Sherwood on bass, Simon Phillips on drums and Keith Emerson doing a cameo appearance on his Modular Moog synthesizer which I recorded while sampling the instrument for a Sonic Reality sound library. I asked Keith if I could write a song around this jam session with him and he kindly gave me permission. That turned into Fern and I “dueling” keys and

guitars with Keith along with a monster Prog rhythm section provided by Billy and Simon. I’ve worked with Billy many times before with my project Sonic Elements and I also played keyboards for a Supertramp tribute album he produced. I played keys on Bloody Well Right with Joe Lynn Turner of Deep Purple on vocals. I had never worked with Simon Phillips before and what he played on this song just blew me away. It’s such an honor to have two of my favorite drummers, Simon Phillips and Nick D’Virgilio, playing on my album!

My Old Friend (Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Hello, my old friendFrom the other side of the endYou’ve come to visit me againPoetic license to pretend

Hello, to the shape unknownWaiting dauntless on my ownBare and fragile flesh and bone I am eager to be shown

Give me reason, give me artUnearthly wisdom you impartCrossing over, shaking handsWith someone who understands

Hello, my old friendFrom the other side of the endWe both took that drive To an unexpected curveWith hollow people Who’ve got a lot of nerveRestrained what we deserveIn a cloud you observe

Give me reason give me artUnearthly wisdom you impart Crossing over shaking handsWith someone who understands

Give me courage give me graceSpin the dogma that I faceI am tuning to the signsEtching truth in cosmic lines

So long my old friendOne day we shall meet again

Ocean of Stars(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Drifting in an ocean of starsMissing you and all that was oursI travel to the waters that glowTo dive into the realm we knowIt’s hard to fathom what we chooseSomeone has to win or loseAnother life a different fateIn this one it’s too late

Immortalized within a songShattered rhymes and words unveiled Now I’m back where I belongWe can’t deny this ship has sailed

Drifting in an ocean of stars Picturing your crystal faceA vision I cannot eraseMisfortune took the magic awayNothing I could do or say One of these days you’ll know

I never meant to let you goIf only you and I could be wholeWe’d get back what they stole

Immortalized within a songShattered rhymes and words unveiledNow I’m back where I belongWe can’t deny this ship has sailed

Drifting in an ocean of starsMissing you and all that was oursDon’t know if I’ll see you againWe’ll be alright in the end

About Durga McBroom, Lorelei McBroom, Emily Lynn and Lara Smiles It was great working with such incredible singers as Durga McBroom, Lorelei McBroom, Emily Lynn and Lara Smiles. Durga has been singing with Pink Floyd for decades including the latest and reportedly last Pink Floyd album The Endless River. She joins me on Stranded Part 1-5, In The Garden and other songs. Lorelei McBroom also used to sing with Pink Floyd and at the time of this release she’s touring with the Australian Pink Floyd tribute band along with Emily and Lara. Synchronicity happened in a big way. When the Aussies were in Miami on their tour, they happened to have a day off and we managed to record Lorelei, Emily and Lara for Solitude. It flowed like magic in that one day. I really like how you can hear the distinct character of each of their voices blended with mine.

Nothing(Music by Dave Kerzner & Fernando Perdomo ; Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Thought we had it allJust illusionThen we hit a wallBig confusion

Words don’t mean a thingJust distractionBirds no longer singA sad abstraction

All I need from you is NothingNothing at all

Schemers pay the priceInstant karmaA toxic storm of iceTerra firma

Enjoy your power tripJust delusionI’m off your sinking shipMy revolution

About Steve Hackett It was an honor for me to join Steve Hackett on the song Supper’s Ready for his Genesis Revisited 2 album, sharing the keyboard duties with Roger King. When I was backstage at his live show he pulled me aside to ask me how I was doing. I told him I was working on my first album as a solo artist and he gave me some great advice and offered to guest on it. I sent an early version of Stranded to Roger King so he could record Steve at their studio in England. What they sent back blew my mind! I’ve always been a fan of Steve’s style and sound. To hear him improvising over my music was a dream come true. I’m so glad we captured a magic musical chemistry that I feel transcends generations.

Realign (Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

There you are feeling sorry for yourselfGood intentions collect dust upon a shelfAmbition dying from a tireless fightAnother tumble another bitter fallYou’ve got a sympathetic story for it allYou will rise to make it right When you decide

All of life is fictionIt’s all in your conviction From inside the writer pens the way

RealignRealize, reassign, redefine, realignRealignAll is fine In a hundred years none of this will matterOur worries wash in a sea of timeless chatterThere’s no sense in aiming low Your future self is waiting for a sparkSo stand up and make your final markLet the silence guide your flowGuide your flow

All of life is fictionIt’s all in your conviction From inside the writer pens the way

RealignRealize, reassign, redefine, realignRealignAll is fine

You’ve gotta wake upThere’s been enough said

It’s all in your handsBut you’re trapped in your head Don’t look behindThis is your time

RealignThis is your timeAll is fine

All of life is fictionIt’s all in your conviction From inside the writer pens the wayPens the way

About the recording, mixing and mastering engineers I was very fortunate to have legendary engineer Tom Lord-Alge’s help and advice. He mixed the opening track Stranded Part 1-5 and set a high standard for the rest of the music. I found myself mixing the other songs on the album with the help of Chris “Hollywood” Holmes who I had worked with before on Sound of Contact’s Dimensionaut album. Chris also helped record Nick D’Virgilio’s drums in addition toengineers Justin Phelps and Mark Hornsby.

The masterful mastering was performed by my long time friend and former roommate, Gavin Lurssen along with Reuben Cohen of Lurssen Mastering. They’ve won countless awards over there at that mastering house and we’re both really proud of what each other have accomplished since the time we first met in the early 90s. To be able to work together on my first album as a solo artist really was a cool thing!

New World(Music and Lyrics by Dave Kerzner)

Too many people counting up their changeInviting insanity in a world so strangeAll that we are

Recording the memoriesWith cameras in our eyes A fraction of realityAnd the magic moment diesAll that we are

What we have we borrowPossessions in the mindYesterday we plan tomorrow Leave today behindIf you and I would see

The power that’s withinA new world we create could begin

In the kingdom of societyWe’re all ruled by the clockConsumed by our anxietyWe march instead of walkAll that we are

What we have we borrowPossessions in the mindYesterday we plan tomorrowLeave today behindIf you and I would seeThe power that’s withinA new world we create could begin

We hold the answerInside we knowObscured by imposed beliefsTill we let them go

What we have we borrowPossessions in the mindYesterday we plan tomorrowLeave today behind

If you and I would see The power that’s withinA new world we create could begin

Part 6 - The OasisPart 7 - Resilience II Part 8 - High On The DunesPart 9 - Mirage Of The MachinesPart 10 - To The Light

A storm of frantic changes taking placeThe molecules are glowing ahhhThe energy exploding into spaceThe field that held me in suspension Left to feed on your disgrace ahhh

I scan across the desert with new eyesIntercepting signals crossing yeahEnemies are trapped in their disguise Unwinding clock revealing the mask of lies

The cold machines are lurking in a packThe echoes of their marchingCalling me to face them on this trackInner peace and sanity is fleeting In the race to get it back

The stars and oceansFade into the sunI shook the garden spellMelding back to oneIt’s nearly over now

Now that I’ve come this farThe quality of how we areAll have had a role to playWhat’s the meaning who can say?Climbing over hills of blameDetermined lone forgotton name

A wave of evolution cameI’m coming back to stake my claim

All the talkAll the fear All the questions disappearPast the painAround the bendJust what matters in the endAll is rightAll will thriveAll it means to be aliveAnd the truth somehow survivesI see my part so clearly nowFrom the stage, a final bowAll those years of learning howHolding on through the day and the nightWe’ll make it to the lightTo the light

A big thank you to my wonderful family who has provided support and encouragement over the years and to all my friends and colleagues. An extra special thanks to the backers of the “New World” Kickstarter campaign who contributed massively to the funding of this album. I will never forget those who believed in me from the very beginning.

My Old Friend is dedicated to the memory of Kevin Gilbert.
