OVERVIEW OF THE SEMESTER

Type of BriefThis semester I have responded best to the open briefs. The D&AD project and the Manifesto didn’t have as many limitations as the other briefs, however, I feel that they were more successful because we had longer to approach the subject. In general, I think I prefer the ‘tight briefs’ because it encourages more of a challenge and makes me think about what I can do with what I’ve been given.

Integral ElementsI used to find that I would limit myself to illustrations and imagery, however, I have recently to started to experiment with other media. This semester I have found that typography has been one of my stronger points. I am starting to understand the power that type alone can have on its audience. I am starting to see relationships forming in the way text can be juxtaposed with other elements, in particular, photography.

SuccessI am starting to develop my skills a lot further and not be restricted by what I am being taught. This semester I have learned a lot from working in 3D and have worked around overcoming difficulties that wouldn’t arise on screen or on paper. The result in being faced with certain challenges now, is that it’ll be easier for me to tackle in the future, if a similar problem arises. As I want to try and push myself beyond my technical capabilities, I have started to tackle more software, including Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere and Adobe Soundbooth.

ProblemsMy main problem at the moment lies in how I approach a given brief. I don’t feel I give myself enough options on how I can tackle certain problems and jump straight in to an idea I have from the start. I will overcome this by taking further research into specific subject areas and attempt to try more things out before settling on an idea. In contrast, I have found that when it comes making choices with smaller detail, I can be very indecisive which may be another reason for my limitations.

PersonalityI am really interested in editorial design. Working with type and image in particular is starting to reveal my personality in design. I think this is because when faced with decisions in this field, you can have the opportunity to be as loud or as quiet as you want to be so effectively. In addition, I enjoy working with moving image and its something I want to look at taking further next year.

D&AD PROJECT: INTRODUCTION

I chose the Whisky Brief because I was interested in the packaging aspect of design. Packaging is something I’ve never really looked into before so I felt this gave me the opportunity to see how I would respond to a subject I was unfamiliar with. I understood that there would be limitations in creating the final product, but that it was more about the concept. The aspects that influenced my design work were thinking about the different ways the whisky could be contained.

I don’t feel that my final product meets the creative demands of the brief as I think I moved away from what the brief was asking. I believe I could have overcome this by trying out more ideas from the early stages by physically testing their durability. I believe my concept does meet some of the requirements specified, however, if I had tried and tested some of my initial ideas the project might have headed in a different direction. I have learned that this is essential when working in the 3rd dimension and will apply this method in future projects.

The brief demanded that the product should be aimed at a contemporary audience. Many clubs now sell alcohol in test tubes as a type of shot, so I decided to look at how whisky could be contained in the same way. The idea being, that the consumer would purchase this before a party as an easy way of getting intoxicated more hastily before going out. The concept involved working around this idea of chemistry as the shots would be premixed with other flavours so to suggest the idea of a chemical reaction. I based the name around the periodic table of elements and eventually came up with the name ‘Wh’. The influence came from alco-pops, such as ‘WKD’. The way in which these drinks are abbreviated suggests a younger audience, as opposed to the more traditional drinks.

MANIFESTO: INTRODUCTION

The ideas I was trying to communicate through my manifesto came as a series of points that I live by and that I believe make me who I am and could help make someone else a better person if they are troubled in anyway. Initially, I started with 20 specific reasons for my beliefs, but I narrowed it down to make it more open for people to relate to in their own way too.

My manifesto was all about a way of living so I wanted to express the ideas as a journey filled with objects and elements that would link together as a life of its own. I started looking at machinery and mechanisms to suggest the manifesto is an ongoing process producing knowledge that anyone can take meaning from. Having done some research, I became intrigued by the early Russian constructivists and how they conveyed such strong messages in their design, e.g the different angles and shapes they would approach. Therefore, I decided to build an moving image on After Effects that would bring to life the manifesto by linking different elements in a similar style. I found some areas quite challenging where I wanted to visualize a certain point but found it technically difficult to complete. However, I did start to come up with new ideas that were more successful than I had originally for seen having learned new techniques in the software. It would be nice to find out how to overcome some of these difficulties for the future, as their is probably shortcuts for approaching certain issues.

Having written and designed my manifesto, I have learned more from my ideologies than I initially realised when writing it. When thinking of ways of communicating certain messages I began to understand how personal some of the messages actually were, which helped produce a more successful design. Most of my points have changed since I first wrote my manifesto because I have had time to reflect on them and narrow them down to their purest form.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

I am going to spend a lot of time over the summer broadening my technical skills in After Effects. I would like to find out more about the software’s capabilities and use this to my advantage next year. In order to find out more I will continue looking at online tutorials, such as video co-pilot, as they offer a great deal of practical tuition which I enjoy following. I am also thinking of redesigning my website and building an identity for my work as I am starting to see flaws in how my current design portfolio is presented.

I will develop my current strengths by keeping on top of everything over the summer and making sure I don’t slip behind, as I have found the world of design is always moving forward. By keeping this work ethic going, I will be prepared for when I return. To nurture and develop my skills I will maintain balance with my time. I intend on working from 9-5 everyday then having the evening and weekend free. I work a lot better in the studio so I will carry on taking full opportunity of being present throughout the week.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

In addition to rebuilding my website, I am going to start a blog which will follow a similar and hopefully recognisable style. Everything is going to link together in a way that potential clients will recognise me and what I am about. I also plan on entering work to designcrowd and websites alike, whereby companies ask for a certain piece of design online and commission the best one. Hopefully this will keep me active and develop my general design skills in contemporary practise.

I sometimes find it hard to approach a brief and struggle on finding an idea that suits the problem. In order to strengthen my game I need to dig deeper into the world of design. I am always looking at design and finding inspiration through magazines (computer arts etc) and the online, but there is no limit to how much I could be learning from the resources available. I now plan on looking further than design even more so, and discovering who influences my influences. Hopefully, when I’ve redesigned my website, blog, etc. I will become more connected with designers and be receiving advice and inspiration with from others as well as giving some.
