We are delighted to offer you asweeping range of music for 2018.Highlights include the Orchestra of theAge of Enlightenment, Marin Alsopand soloist Nicola Benedettiperforming with an all-Beethovenevening. This concert has now soldout, but please look out on our websitefor news of any late-release tickets.

We join with SJE Arts on Iffley Road to hear Erik Satie’s famous pianomusic woven together with his hugelyentertaining writings, showing the fullscope of this quirky composer’s mind, before marking the final concert of theVilliers Quartet Oxford Residency. Please see page 4 for a specialinvitation.

Spring brings glorious penitentialmusic for Eastertime from TheCardinall’s Musick, followed by violconsort Fretwork and actor SimonCallow, with a programme basedaround the travels of Francis Drake. In May, Rachel Podger and her virtuosoensemble, Brecon Baroque, performVivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

We will be at the Oxford Playhouse on 27 May as part of the AshmoleanMuseum’s American Modernismprogramme. In one packed day, weexplore the wit of Dorothy Parker inwords and music, and the brilliance ofearly film and its pianists withbroadcaster and writer Neil Brand.

Our season finishes in June with fourenticing but very different concerts:Handel’s clavichord music is acurtain-raiser for the Oxford Bach Choirperformance of his Dixit Dominus;Merton College Choir gives a galaperformance of Elgar’s The Apostles;and finally Trevor Pinnock conducts acrack orchestra of musicians from theRoyal Academy of Music and Japanesecounterpart, Tokyo Geidai.

Presenting concerts of this calibre hasalways been expensive; ticket incomefrom a full house rarely covers thecosts of an event. If you would like tohelp us continue our work, please readpage 15 to learn how you can do so.Thank you.

I hope that you will find ourforthcoming concerts appealing; Music at Oxford programmes artists of international quality, and strives tobring a rich musical choice to ouraudience.

Warmest wishes,

WelcOMeABOuT usMusic at Oxford is a concertseries, so rather like a musicfestival, only with our concertsspread over many months, rather than concentrated in one or two weeks.

We do not have our own venue, butinstead utilise several glorious buildingsaround the City, such as the SheldonianTheatre, the Holywell Music Room,Christ Church Cathedral, SJE Arts at St. John the Evangelist, the Jacquelinedu Pré Music Building, and a number of other venues.

Our mission is to bring the very bestclassical music to Oxford, in terms ofboth repertoire and internationallyrenowned artists. In many respects, therefore, our not being tied to certaindates or to a particular venue is to ouradvantage, allowing us to make themost of all our artists’ availability.

We have our own box office for telephone bookings: 01865244806. Please see our website forfurther information and onlinebooking: www.musicatoxford.comRebecca Dawson

The culmination of the Villiers’ residency in Oxford, thanks tothe Faculty of Music with support from the Radcliffe Trust, istonight’s glorious concert of two much-loved worksinterspersed with a lesser-known quartet by Hubert Parry.Mendelssohn’s op. 80 – with its dramatic opening movementand searing Adagio – was composed as an homage to hissister Fanny, who had recently died. Mendelssohn himselfthen died just two months after finishing the work.Beethoven’s Razumovsky quartets, of which there are three, were a commission from the Russian ambassador to Vienna, and as such utilize Russian themes. (In fact the Russianfolk-song quoted in the work in this concert was also laterused by Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov and Stravinsky.) Parry’sthird string quartet is lesser-known for good reason: it wentmissing among the manuscripts in the Bodleian Library, finallyto be re-discovered among Finzi’s papers in 1992.

There will be interval drinks, and a post-concert reception at anearby location; do join us to thank the members of the VilliersQuartet for their engaging Oxford concerts, and to wish themluck in their future career.

This programme is an emotional snapshot of theevents of Good Friday when Christ’s mother stoodweeping as her son was nailed to the Cross.

Lotti’s searing Crucifixus contrasts with the eleganteight-part Stabat Mater of Palestrina. Victoria’sTenebrae Responsories place the scene in the contextof Holy Week in a setting without equal for emotionaldirectness and clarity.

Allegri’s famous setting of the Miserere with its high soprano Cs and Scarlatti’s fabulous ten-partStabat Mater complete this programme devised by multi-award winning Cardinall’s Musick on awelcome return visit to Oxford.

When Drake set sail fromPlymouth in 1577, he took withhim four viol players who hadlittle clue that this would be suchan epic journey. They playedmusic to accompany Drake’sworship and sang hymns to theviols; they entertained him whilehe ate and he also used theirplaying to impress the natives ofSouth America and Java, where

the king returned the favour by sharing his own music.

Composer Orlando Gough has created a sound journeycharting Drake’s remarkable feat, weaving music of the 16thcentury into his score, and illuminated by readings fromDrake’s account of the voyage, given by Simon Callow.

Vibrant, dynamic performances are the hallmark of Brecon Baroque, and overthe last decade they have delighted many audiences thanks to their tours ofEurope and Japan. For Music at Oxford they will bring a tantalizingprogramme including The Four Seasons. Bach’s transcription of Vivaldi’s violinconcerto from the famous L’estro armonico collection shows off his masteryand understanding of the harpsichord - in the days preceding copyright laws, composers regularly ‘borrowed’ the music of their peers in order to make newversions of them. Led by Gramophone Award winner Rachel Podger, thesepeerless players bring their skill and musicality to this delightful programme.Expect an evening full of energy and exuberance.

Handel, Frescobaldi, Froberger and PachelbelA selection of toccatas and suites

Used throughout the Baroque and Classical eras as a private tool for composing, practice and meditation, the clavichord remained in regular use into thenineteenth century. The last thirty years have witnessed a quiet musicalrevolution: the clavichord is no longer the Cinderella of the keyboard world. Jointhe conductor and keyboardist Julian Perkins to share the enchantment of thisexquisite instrument, so beloved of the young Handel that he ‘found means to geta little clavichord privately conveyed to a room at the top of the house’ for secretnight-time practice.

'It seems as if the clavichord was Handel’s firstMuse… Small wonder given that its intimate tonescompel the player to cultivate a singing tone andbewitch all those who encounter it.' Julian Perkins

This programme includes works by Handel as well as works he may have studiedduring his youth, such as toccatas and suites by Frescobaldi, Froberger andPachelbel.

Haydn Nelson Mass (Missa in Angustiis)Handel Dixit Dominus

Music at Oxford is thrilled to host Oxford Bach Choir’s performanceof these two cornerstones of the choral repertoire. Under conductorPaul Spicer, we can look forward to the sheer scale andmagnificence of these impressive and much-loved works. Haydn’sNelson Mass, arguably the composer’s greatest single composition, was originally entitled Missa in Angustiis or ‘Mass for TroubledTimes’, which indeed they were. Austria at the time was underthreat from Napolean, and Haydn himself was suffering from illnessand exhaustion. Handel’s first important church work Dixit Dominusexceeds the scope and design of his other Latin psalm settings in itsvirtuosity and luminosity.

Believed by many, including his close friend andpublisher Jaeger, to contain some of Elgar’s veryfinest writing, The Apostles tells the story of Christ’slater life and passion through the experience of thosearound him, most tellingly perhaps Mary Magdaleneand Judas Iscariot.

Despite the huge forces it requires – a largeorchestra and chorus, plus no fewer than six solosingers – Elgar’s deeply felt oratorio tells aprofoundly human story in every gloriously scored bar.

A rare opportunity to hear this magnificent work, given as part of the celebration of the tenthbirthday of Merton College’s phenomenallysuccessful choir.

Beethoven Overture to The Creatures of PrometheusMozart Sinfonia Concertante K364Beethoven Symphony no. 3 op. 55 in E flat Eroica

The Royal Academy of Music collaborates with many eminent international partners, such as theJuilliard School in New York. This concert celebrates the Academy’s friendship with Japan and, in particular, its close links with Tokyo Geidai. A joint orchestra from both institutions will beperforming in London, Oxford and Tokyo under the esteemed conductor Trevor Pinnock. Pinnock is a regular visitor to all of the major orchestras in the world and has established himself as thepre-eminent figure in marrying an informed historical performance style with modern orchestralpractice. The Eroica Symphony is one of the most radically compelling masterpieces of the early19th century and inhabits a world where struggle and resolution laid the path for large-scalestructure from that point on. It also shares thematic material with the composer’s ballet Creatures of Prometheus, of which we will hear the overture. Mozart’s well-known and beguilingSinfonia Concertante - a concerto for violin and viola - completes this stimulating programme.
