Two decades after the fall of the Berlin wall, this volume takes stock of the democra-tization processes in Central and Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet states. The chapters highlight the security-related aspects of the transition which pertain, inter alia, to the aspect of NATO membership of Central and Eastern European states and their political and security relations with Russia. The case studies reveal that the commonly used classification of the political landscape into successful democracies in Central and Eastern Europe on the one hand and largely autocratic regimes on the other is too simplistic. To fully grasp the nature of the current challenges and the potential for further reforms, a more detailed analysis is needed.

The editors:

David Bosold is Associate Fellow at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), Berlin, Germany.

Petr Drulák is Director of the Institute of International Relations (IIR) in Prague, and As-sociate Professor of Political Science at the Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic.

Nik Hynek is Research Leader of the Centre for International Security at the Institute of International Relations (IIR) in Prague, and Lecturer at the Metropolitan University, Prague, Czech Republic.
