In 1 Samuel 16:13, Samuel anoints David to be the next king of Israel. Samuel didn’t like the idea at first when God directed him to do it because he was afraid Saul would kill him (1 Samuel 16:2). Apparently Saul wasn’t too excited about God wanting to name a successor for him.

That fact leads us to believe that the anointing was done secretively. In today’s passage, no one seems to know that David had been anointed to be the next king. At least, Saul certainly didn’t know. But even though the people involved likely didn’t know that David had been anointed, they knew there was something special about him. He had a fine reputation as a man and a soldier, he could calm a troubled heart with his harp, and God was with him. He quickly won Saul’s admiration and trust (1 Samuel 16:21-23).

David’s triumph over Goliath was clearly not a human victory. Instead, it was a divine victory accomplished through human means. David was not yet a mighty warrior. He was just a young man—a part-time harpist and armorbearer for the king. Yet he was a young man who trusted God when others didn’t. David knew that his God would not let him down when he went out to face the enemy who was defying God and God’s people. Armed with that trust, a sling, and a stone, David slew the mighty Goliath.

Welcome TimeSUPPLIES: “Shirt Name Tags” (p. 24), scissors, marker, safety pins or tape • Kneel down and make eye contact with children as they arrive.• Greet each child individually with an enthusiastic smile.• Thank each child for coming to class today.• As children arrive, ask them about last week’s lesson or take-home page. Use

questions such as “What did you tell your family about how God helped David?” and “What hard things did God help you do this week?”

• Say: Today we’re going to learn that God helps us trust him.• Hand out the shirt name tags children made during Lesson 1, and help them attach

the name tags to their clothing. Have some extra shirt name tags on hand for children who weren’t in class last week or to replace damaged name tags.

• Direct children to the Let’s Get Started activities you set up.

Let’s Get StartedSet up one or more of the following activities for children to do as they arrive. After

you greet each child, invite him or her to choose an activity.Circulate between the activities to offer help as needed and direct children’s

conversation toward today’s lesson. Ask questions such as “What do you think it would be like to play music for a king or queen?” or “How do you think David felt when he threw the stone at Goliath?”

n Option 1: Melody MakersSUPPLIES: musical instruments

Set out rhythm instruments such as bells, tambourines, and drums for children to look at and try. Explain that David trusted God and wrote songs to God when he was happy, sad, or lonely. Remind children that God helps us trust him just as he helped David.

n Option 2: Rocks in the BrookSUPPLIES: rocks, small paintbrushes, bowls of water

Set out rocks of various sizes, bowls of water, and small paintbrushes on a table. (For safety, all rocks should be larger than a 50-cent piece.) Let the children “paint” the rocks with the water. Talk with children about the different shapes and sizes of rocks you’ve brought. Remind them that David used a stone to fight Goliath. Ask them what kind of stone they think David might have used. Tell children that God helped David trust him and that God helps us trust him, too.

If you have access to a guitar, ukulele, or Autoharp, bring them to class. Children will enjoy strumming these instruments. Make sure an adult supervises the children.

If you collected rocks for Option 2, save them to use in the “Rock Tables” activity in Lesson 9.

Trusting God can be a difficult concept for young children because they can’t see God or touch him. But even preschoolers encounter situations in which they need to trust God. When they’re left alone at preschool for the very first time or when it’s dark and lonely in their rooms at night, God can help!

n Option 3: Slingshot BallSUPPLIES: trash can or bucket

Outside or in an open area of the room, show children how to use the comet ball like a slingshot. Have them hold it by the shiny tail, slowly twirl it around, and then let go of the tail so the ball sails through the air. Place a bucket or trash can about 10 feet away, and have children gently

toss the “slingshot” into the bucket. Remind children that David used a sling and a stone to defeat a mighty giant. At the end of the activity, return the comet ball to the Learning Lab.

When everyone has arrived and you’re ready to move on to Bible Story Time, encourage children to finish what they’re doing and get ready to clean up.

n Pick-Up TimeSUPPLIES: CD player

Lead children in singing “Come Along With Me” (track 2) with the CD to the tune of “Come and Go With Me.” Encourage children to sing along as they help clean up the room.

Come along with me and pick up all our things,Pick up all our things,Pick up all our things.Come along with me and pick up all our thingsSo our room will be clean.(Repeat 2x.)

Bible Story Timen Setting the StageSUPPLIES: CD player

Tell the children you’ll play a fun marching song (track 10) to get their attention. Explain that when you play the song, the children are to stop what they’re doing and march toward you. Practice this signal a few times. Encourage children to respond quickly so you’ll have time for all the fun activities you’ve planned.

Gather children in a circle. Ask: • What did you make or do when you came to our class today? (Played

instruments; painted rocks; threw a ball.)Point to an area on the floor to your left, and say: I’d like everyone who played

musical instruments to sit over here.

If you have room, you can add challenge to this activity by having kids twirl around with the comet ball before letting it go.

Lesson 7

Page 5: David Does Big Things for God • Lesson 7 Bible Point God ...storage.cloversites.com/communitybiblechurch4...David Does Big Things for God • Lesson 7 Bible Verse It is the Lord’s

Wait for the children to move, and then point to an area on the floor directly in front of you, and say: I’d like everyone who painted rocks to sit right here in front of me.

Wait for the children to move, and then point to an area on the floor to your right, and say: I’d like everyone who played with the comet ball to sit over here.

When all the children are sitting in their areas, say: When you came to class today, you all learned some very important things about our Bible friend David. Find a partner from another group, and tell that partner what you learned about David in your activity. Raise your hand if you need help finding a partner.

Help children find partners. If you have an uneven number of children in your class, form a group of three. As children talk to their partners, circulate among the pairs to help them recall the things they talked about in their Let’s Get Started activities.

After all the children have had time to share, play the marching music to regain children’s attention. Wait for them to start marching, and then say: Good job, partners. I’d like to hear what you learned about David. Raise your hand if you’d like to tell us what your partner shared with you.

Call on several children. Then say: David knew how to play music and write songs. He even played music for the king. David was also very brave. He killed a big giant with just one stone.

Ask: • Who helped David do all those things? (The king; God; his dad.)Say: God helped David. David was able to do all those things because

he trusted God. We can trust God just as David did because God helps us trust him. Let’s play a game with our partners to find out more about trusting.

Have children stay with their partners. If you have a group of three, be a partner to one of the children in that group yourself. Have partners spread out around the room. Say: If you’re the partner who’s wearing the most red, cover your eyes with your hands.

Wait for children to cover their eyes. Continue: Red partners, your partners are going to lead you around the room. Keep your eyes covered—no peeking. Your partner will hold on to your elbow and make sure you don’t bump into anything.

Show seeing partners how to gently grasp their partners’ elbows and lead them around the room. After a minute or so, have partners switch roles. After another minute, say: Now lead your partners back to our story area.

When all the children are seated in the story area, ask:• What was it like to have a partner lead you around the room? (Scary;

fun; easy, because I peeked.)• What was it like to lead a partner around the room? (Hard; I was afraid of

bumping into people; fun.)• When you couldn’t see, you had to trust your partner to lead you

around. How is trusting your partner like or unlike trusting God? (I can’t see God; my partner is next to me, and God is in heaven.)

Say: Sometimes it’s hard to trust God when we can’t even see him, just as it was hard to trust your partners when you couldn’t see where you were going. But God helps us trust him. Let’s find out more about how God helped David trust him.

Research shows that children remember about 90 percent of what they do but less than 10 percent of what they hear. The preschoolers in your class learn best by doing, smelling, tasting, feeling, seeing, and hearing.

n Bible Song and Prayer TimeSUPPLIES: Bible, CD player

Say: Now it’s time to choose a Bible person to bring me the Bible marked with today’s Bible story. As we sing our Bible song, we’ll pass around our special Bible. The person who’s holding the Bible when the music stops will be our Bible person today. Remember that everyone will get a chance to be our Bible person.

Lead children in singing “I’m So Glad for the Bible” (track 4) with the CD to the tune of “Give Me Oil in My Lamp.” As you sing, pass around the special Bible.

I’m so glad for the Bible.Keep me learnin’, learnin’, learnin’.I’m so glad for God’s book today.I’m so glad for the Bible.Keep me learnin’, learnin’, learnin’—Keep me learnin’ all about his way.

(Repeat first verse.)

When the music stops, invite the child who’s holding the Bible to bring it to you. Stamp the child’s hand with the sheep stamp, and thank the child for bringing you the Bible. Then stamp the other children’s hands. Return the sheep stamp and ink pad to the Learning Lab.

Say: I’m thankful for [name of child who brought you the Bible]. Tell each child that you are thankful for him or her. Let’s thank God together for all our friends in this class.

Lead children in singing “I’m So Glad We’re Together” (track 5) with the CD to the tune of “Give Me Oil In My Lamp.”

I’m so glad we’re together.Keep us prayin’, prayin’, prayin’.I’m so glad we’re all here today.I’m so glad we’re together.Keep us prayin’, prayin’, prayin’—Prayin’ for each other every day.

Lead children in folding their hands and bowing their heads as you continue to sing.

Thank you, Lord, for each one.Keep me thankful, thankful, thankful.Thank you for everyone who’s here.Thank you, Lord, for each one.Keep me thankful, thankful, thankful—Thankful for our friends both far and near.

n Hear and Tell the Bible StorySUPPLIES: Bible, CD player

Open the Bible to 1 Samuel 16–17. Say: Our story comes from the Bible, God’s special book. I’ll tell you the story of David in a fun rhyme. Will you help me act it out?

Lead children in the following action rhyme about David. Have a helper turn the pages of the Bible Big Book: David and Goliath at the appropriate times.

(Page 1)Little David watched the sheep (shield eyes with hand)(Pages 2-3)And sang to God with a voice so sweet. (Pretend to play a harp.)When bears and lions sneaked around (hold fingers like claws),David’s sheep were what they found. (Rub tummy.)God helped David fight the beasts (pretend to sword fight)So the sheep could live in peace. (Lay head on hands.)(Pages 4-5)One day David took a meal (walk in place)To his brothers on the battlefield.Goliath stood there, big and mean (flex muscles and look mean)—The biggest man they’d ever seen! (Look up.)“Who will fight?” the giant cried. (Put up fists.)“Send me someone from your side!” (Make beckoning motion.)David said, “Don’t shake with fright.” (Tremble and look afraid.)“I’ll go, and God will help me fight.” (Point to heaven.)(Pages 6-7)With just a slingshot and five smooth stones (hold up five fingers),Brave David faced Goliath alone. And when his stone flew through the air (pretend to twirl a slingshot and throw a

stone),It hit Goliath fair and square! (Hold up hands in victory.)The stone went “smack” and hit his crown (point to forehead),And then Goliath fell right down. (Stomp feet on “down.”)So David won with a stone and a sling (pretend to twirl a slingshot),(Page 8)And many years later became a king. (Pretend to place crown on head.)

Say: The people wanted David to be their king because they knew he trusted God.

David Does Big Things for God

Page 8: David Does Big Things for God • Lesson 7 Bible Point God ...storage.cloversites.com/communitybiblechurch4...David Does Big Things for God • Lesson 7 Bible Verse It is the Lord’s

Ask: • When did David have to trust God in our story? (To fight the lion; to fight Goliath.)

• When do you have to trust God? (When I’m scared; when I say a prayer; when I’m alone.)

Say: We can trust God when we’re scared, when we’re alone, or anytime. God helps us trust him. Let’s sing the song we’ve been learning about how

God helps us. Remember, God wants to help you trust him just as he helped David.

Lead children in singing “I Can Talk to God” (track 14) with the CD to the tune of “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.”

When I’m afraid,I can talk to God.Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Every day. When I am alone,When I am sad,I will tell him everything that’s in my heart.(Repeat.)

Say: That song reminds us that God helps us trust him. David trusted that God would help him fight Goliath. Later David had to sing his songs for King Saul. That might have been scary, but David trusted God. We can trust God when we face hard times, too, because we know he is on our side fighting for us. Our Bible verse tells us, It is the Lord’s battle, not ours. Let’s sing our Bible verse song as a way of thanking God for fighting for us and helping us to trust him.

Lead the children in singing “The Battle Is the Lord’s” (track 13) with the CD to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell.”

The battle is the Lord’s.The battle is the Lord’s.When there’s something hard to do,The battle is the Lord’s.(Repeat.)

n Do the Bible StorySUPPLIES: books, rubber bands, 2 paper plates, scissors, markers, CD player

Before class, make “harps” for the children by stretching rubber bands over books. Create two simple face masks to represent David and King Saul using paper plates. Cut holes for eyes, and draw curly hair on top of one to represent David and a crown on top of the other to represent King Saul.

Give each child a rubber band “book harp.” Ask one child to hold up the king mask in front of his or her face, and another child to hold up the David mask. The children will act out the following poem as you read it to the class.

After you read each section, have children sing “Grumpy King Saul” to the tune of “Alouette” while they strum their harps. Make sure you allow different children to use the king mask and David mask after each stanza of the poem.

Say:

Grumpy King Saul all mean and crossSittin’ unhappy on his throne. Poor pouty king was at a loss.He gave out a moan and groan.

Lead children in singing “Grumpy King Saul” to the tune of “Alouette”:

Come on, King Saul, grumpy, frumpy King Saul.Come on, King Saul, put your trust in God.Put your trust in God today,And your grumps will go away.Find your smile. That’s the style!O-o-o-o-oh!

Say:

Young David came in to play his harpBefore the cold, cranky king.Hit every note—flat or sharp.Man, he made that harp sing!

Lead children in singing “Grumpy King Saul” to the tune of “Alouette.”Say:

The king’s hard heart was cold as stone. But after David slapped out that sound,The king jumped up from his hard gold throne,And started dancing round!

Lead children in singing “Grumpy King Saul” to the tune of “Alouette.”Say: It must have been a little scary for David to play the harp for the

grumpy king. But God helps us trust him, just as David did. We can trust God like David did when we’re afraid or have hard things to do. Let’s sing a song about how God helps us.

Say: If we sing our song quietly, let’s see if our friend Whiskers will trust us and come out to visit. Play the song again and lead children in singing it softly.

Closingn Learning to TrustSUPPLIES: none

Bring out Whiskers the Mouse, and go through the following puppet script. When you finish the script, put Whiskers away and out of sight.

(Hold Whiskers on your lap as you begin this script.)

Teacher: Children, would you like to hold and pet Whiskers? (To Whiskers) Whiskers, your friends love you and want to pet you.

Whiskers: (Begins to shake a little.) I’m scared. They’re so much bigger than me. They might hurt me.

Teacher: Whiskers, we’ve been learning today that God helps us trust him. Maybe your friends can tell you what they’ve learned about trust. Children, what does it mean to trust someone? (Children might reply: You can trust your friends; that you’re not afraid; that a person will help you.) Whiskers, maybe you won’t be so scared if you trust God to help you. All of your friends in this class love you. They won’t hurt you.

(Encourage the children to reassure Whiskers that they love him and won’t hurt him.)

Whiskers: OK, I’ll let you pet me. But only if you promise you won’t squeeze my ears or pull my tail! And I only want one of you to pet me at a time.

Teacher: [Name of child sitting near you], would you like to pet Whiskers first?

(Help the child gently pet Whiskers.)

Whiskers: Oh-h-h, that was nice! It’s nice to be petted! I like it! More! More!

Teacher: Who else would like a turn to pet Whiskers?

(Give each child a chance to pet Whiskers. Have Whiskers respond warmly to each child’s affection.)

Whiskers: I’m so glad I learned to trust you. Hugs and pats make me feel so good—like I’m important to you. Thank you, everybody! I can’t wait to see you next time! I have to go now. Goodbye.

n Trusting PrayersSUPPLIES: none

Say: Whiskers learned to trust you just as David learned to trust God.

Ask: • What things did David trust God for? (Help in fighting Goliath; protecting the sheep.)

• What things do you trust God for? (Help me be brave in the dark; help me not fight with my brother and sister.)

Say: Even though David couldn’t see God, he trusted that God would help him fight the giant, Goliath. Even though you can’t see God, you can trust God that he will help you with what you need.

Have children form pairs, and give each pair a pinwheel. Say: Hold your pinwheel in front of you and gently blow on it. Pause while children follow your instructions.

Ask: • What happened when you blew on your pinwheels? (They moved; they went in circles.)

• What made your pinwheels move? (My breath; air; wind.)Say: You couldn’t see your breath, but you could see how it made the

pinwheels spin. We can’t see God, but we can trust that he’s right beside us, helping us in every situation.

Ask: • Who did God send from heaven to us to teach us about God? (His Son; Jesus.)

• How can we say thank you to God for sending Jesus and for helping us? (Sing songs; say a prayer.)

Collect the pinwheels. Say: God helps us trust him. Let’s say a prayer together now to help us remember to do that. I’ll say each line, and then you say it after me and do the motions I do. Then we’ll all say “In Jesus’ name, amen” at the end.

Lead children in the following action prayer:

God, I trust you every day (put hands over head like a sun shining)To listen (point to ears) to the prayers I pray. (Kneel and fold hands in prayer.)I trust your help in all I do. (Hold up strong arms to indicate God’s help.)Help me do big things for you! (On “big,” jump as high as you can.)In Jesus’ name, amen.

Growing closer to Jesus extends beyond the classroom.Photocopy the “Today I Learned…” handout (at the end of this lesson) for this week, and send it home with the children. Encourage parents to use the handout to plan meaningful family activities to reinforce this week’s topic.

n Lively Learning: Doing Big ThingsBefore class, make a “sling” from an old washcloth and two pieces of string or yarn.

Poke holes in all four corners of the washcloth. Thread the string through the holes as shown in the drawing. Draw Goliath on a chalkboard or on paper taped to a wall. Let the children take turns being David and pretend to use the sling and crumpled paper “rocks” to get Goliath. As each child takes a turn, have the other children say, “It is the Lord’s battle, not ours.” After the activity, talk with the children about the big things David did for God. Remind them that God helps us trust him.

n Make to Take: Shoe-Box HarpsCollect enough empty shoe boxes for each child in your class to have one. Set out

the shoe boxes and different-sized rubber bands. Make sure all your rubber bands are big enough to stretch over the length of the boxes. Different-sized rubber bands will make different sounds when they’re stretched. Help children take the lids off their boxes and stretch rubber bands over their boxes. For even more musical fun, cut a large hole in each lid. Fit the lids over the finished shoe-box harps, and tape them in place. Have children strum the rubber bands through the holes.

Encourage the children to make up songs to God as David did, thanking God for his help. Remind them that God helped David trust him and God helps us trust him.

n Treat to Eat: Shake and Eat!Before class, make “tambourines” by folding a paper plate in half and

taping it together. Leave a 4-inch opening in each tambourine. Be sure to make a tambourine for each child in your class. Set out bowls of cereal. Have each child count out 10 pieces. Show each child how to put the cereal inside the tambourine through the opening along the edge. Then tape the

openings shut so children will be able to open them easily later. As children shake the tambourines, lead them in singing “I Can Talk to God” (track 14)

with the CD to the tune of “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.” (Lyrics are on page 104.) With the children, march around a few times and then march back to your snack area. Help children peel back the tape and open their tambourines so they can eat the treat inside.

n Story Picture: David Plays for the KingGive each child a photocopy of the “Today I Learned…” handout (at the end of this lesson). Set out crayons

or markers, glue, and 2-inch pieces of yarn. Have children color the picture of David playing for the king, and then help them glue pieces of yarn onto the strings of David’s harp. As children work, review the story of David. Remind them that God helps us trust him.

Page 13: David Does Big Things for God • Lesson 7 Bible Point God ...storage.cloversites.com/communitybiblechurch4...David Does Big Things for God • Lesson 7 Bible Verse It is the Lord’s

It is the Lord’s battle, not ours (adapted from 1 Samuel 17:47b).

n When did God help David trust him?

n When do you need to trust God?

n How can our family members let God help us trust him this week?

n Pray this prayer with your child:

God, I trust you every day

To listen to the prayers I pray.

I trust your help in all I do.

Help me do big things for you!

n Make your own musical instruments with pots, spoons, and other kitchen utensils. Play music and songs to the Lord just as David did. Finish your singalong by reading a psalm of praise and trust, such as Psalm 8, from a children’s Bible.

Lesson 7Today your child learned that GOD HELPS US TRUST HIM. Children heard how David accomplished big things because he trusted God (1 Samuel 16:16–17:51). They asked God to help them trust him.

God helps us

trust him.
