December 4-H’er of the Month - Drew Bailey

Drew Bailey is the December 4-H’er of the

Month. He joined 4-H because of all the fun

projects he could do. Drew would describe 4-H

as something that is fun but challenging. He

has taken archery, .22 rifle, junk drawer robot-

ics, hiking, camping, aerospace, swine, beef,

leadership, leatherwork, and woodworking. His

favorite project has been camping because it is

fun to make a fire, cook your food and sleep

outside. The most important thing Drew has

learned is perseverance. As secretary of the

Montrose Busy Beavers, Drew has learned to

have good organization skills and responsibili-

ties. His job was to be at every meeting to take

notes and keep records for the 4-H club. Then

he would type up the meeting minutes and sub-

mit them to the Extension Office.

The most exciting thing he has done through

4-H is when he went hiking with a group at the

Bothwell Lodge. They were

even able to tour the mansion.

He also enjoyed going to Teen

Conference and 4-H Camp.

He enjoyed the opportunity to

make new friends at both.

Drew’s future plans with

4-H is to continue it through

High School and to keep

improving his leadership skills & to learn

as much from it as he can and to keep

serving as officers in his club.

As Drew grows up he thinks he will use

his 4-H learned skills with any future job. He

will also use them to gain and improve

friendships. 4-H skills have helped him with

presenting and demonstrating in front of an

audience. Drew feels youth should join 4-H

because it teaches good life skills that one

could use the rest of their life.

Janna Wareham, the Montrose Busy

Beavers 4-H Club Co-Leader, wrote that

“Drew’s fellow 4-H members nominated him

as their outstanding member because he

has always been enthusiastic about 4-H. He

has participated in many projects and also

takes advantage of the many opportunities

available in 4-H such as summer camp and

4-H Teen Conference.

Drew is a great role model to younger

members. He served as a mentor to young-

er and new members at last years meetings.

Drew has taken on the role of Vice President

of the club this year. His leadership has

been a wonderful example for his younger

brother and sister who are following his foot-

steps in their enthusiasm for 4-H.”

New 4-H Year Families can begin online registrations for the 2017-18 4-H year which began Oct. 1. Instructions are below or on our Couny 4-H Web Site.. Extension.missouri.edu/henry/4haspx. Everyone must enroll or re-enroll for the 2018 year. Clover catalogs are now available at your club meeting or the office, for project picking. All new Adult Volunteers are required to do the annual paper Background Check form.

Enrollment Process

Since you are receiving the newsletter, you are already a 4-H member and just need to sign up for the 2017-18 4-H year. Beginning October 1, you will be able to re-enroll for the 4-H year. Here are the steps you will need to take to get enrolled. Go to http://mo.4honline.com (notice there is no “www” in that address). Log in to your family

profile with your log-in email address. (If you can’t remember your password, select “I forgot my password”) Continue to your Family Member list.

Select "Edit" next to the member you are re-enrollling. Select "Enroll for 2017-2018" at the bottom of the first

health form changes and change any projects (if you aren’t enrolling in a project, delete it for this year - your records for past years will be still saved).

Submit your enrollment, and pay required dues reflected on member invoices.

Please, please do NOT create a new profile, just update the old one. Even if your email address has changed, still use the old one to log in and then update to your new email address.

(Note: If you have MissouriCare or Home State Health Insurance a benefit is your member dues could be paid - one per year. Call the Ext. Office for details.) Again this year all state event registrations will require a member to be in “Active” status in 4HOnline. Members will remain in “Pending” status until the county review of membership and state membership dues are processed. Q Tip Series: Reframing Conflict

Missouri 4-H is interested in making the best better – in our youth, our leaders and our programs. An ongoing program improvement process called “Quality Matters in 4-H” is underway in Missouri. The Quality or “Q-Tip” series includes short, research-based tips to help youth and adult leaders be more intentional about planning 4-H club meetings and other events where members feel safe, supported and engaged in fun, inter-active activities.

Reframing Conflict

Conflict occurs when two or more people’s beliefs, actions or attitudes don’t line up. This can happen be-tween adults and youths. Conflict is a normal occurrence in youth programs, and it is one of the most chronic issues noted by youth workers. Until we are comfortable and consistent when we deal with conflict, we will continue to find it a distraction in daily program life.

According to HighScope, to provide a high quality program, youth workers must reframe conflict and find ways for growth and learning inside these often-frustrating situations.

A few key behaviors that help reframe conflict:

• Leaders approach the situation calmly and acknowledge feelings. • Leaders ask involved youths about the cause and the possible solutions. • Leaders encourage youths to consider the effects of their actions. • There is follow-up afterward.

By reframing conflict using these behaviors, staff build a healthy, cohesive group and encouraged learning and growth for the young person.

Save the date for the Missouri 4-H Robotics Contest

The Missouri 4-H Robotics Contest is set for Saturday, May 19, 2018 with the location to be determined. Youth in the 4-H robotics contest will want to make plans to participate in the contests, bring demonstra-tions, and have exhibits to show their mastery in the project. You will not have to qualify at the local level to participate. There will be opportunities for teams and individuals. A challenge to work towards will be an-nounced by February 1 so there will be plenty of time to build and program the robots. Details of the event will be posted at http://mo4h.missouri.edu/robotevents/robotexhibition as they become available.

4-H Robotics Training, January 12 & 13, 2018

A 4-H robotics training and exposition, in conjunction with the Computers on the Farm Conference at Tan-Tar-A in Osage Beach, Missouri, will be January 12-13. Friday night is optional and will have a 4-H Technology Exposition where adults and youth can get their hands on robot kits, electronics, computer science and other equipment used in the 4-H science projects. The formal 4-H robotics training on the Lego Mindstorms EV3 will be on Saturday from 9:00 am-2:00 pm for adult 4-H robotics volunteers. 4-H members are invited to share their 4-H robotics or other projects with the participants of the Computers on the Farm event. Tan-Tar-A offers a very inexpensive room rate for Friday night. Meals are provided for the training on Satur-day. Registration for the Saturday event will be through 4HOnline and will be open by November 1. Watch this website for more details: http://mo4h.missouri.edu/robotevents/robottraining

The Academy connects 4-H teens with opportuni-ties to share success stories with key leaders, while gaining citizenship skills for careers in agriculture, leader-ship and public service, law, lobbying, fundraising, and related fields. Youth delegates are between 14-20 years old on December 31, and selected on the basis of their demonstrat-ed leadership and citizenship in 4-H. Henry County 4-H Council November 2017 Minutes The November meeting of the Henry County 4-H Council was called to order by co-president Alyssa Engeman on November 20, 2017 at 7:01pm. The officers led the pledges. Kayla Taylor read the minutes from the last meeting. There were no corrections made to the minutes so Bailey Carter made the motion to approve the minutes and Lane Wareham seconded it; motion passed. Bailey Carter gave treasurer’s report. The end-ing balance is $27,699.89. With no corrections to the report, Brendon Engeman moved that the report be approved and Keon Engeman seconded it; motion passed. Montrose Busy Beavers, Clinton Cool Cats, Clinton Cougars, CCA Patriots, Shawnee Indians and Mt. Zion Lions gave their club reports. Old Business – The 4-H Recognition Banquet was discussed. The attendance from the last two years being approximately the same; the only difference was this one taking place as a Sunday afternoon Dessert Buffet and last year there was a Saturday evening dinner. The best year at-tended was the year that postcards were sent out as invitations to everyone involved. The committee would like banquet invitations to be mailed out again next year. The Liberty Tree planting had a good turn out and took place after the banquet. The press releases that ran in the newspa-per all week during National 4-H week were a good showing for our county 4-H youth. Kyle Hill is another positive voice for our county youth as well. Countywide projects were discussed with Hippology and Vet Science being added to the list with instructors being Janet Caple and Megan Swaters. There was a discussion about the robotics project in the county, what kind; Lego? Kim Hall told Abby Noble that she would get with her about what is available in the regional office as kits, and they could talk about a county instructor, with her being possibly the junior leader. Kim also reminded everyone to get their enrollments done as soon as possible. The YPA position is still waiting on Human Resources in Columbia to continue with the process for the county. An email was sent yesterday questioning the progress for the position. There are still questions for how the counties will be grouped in the upcoming months. It is looking like Henry, Cass and Johnson counties will possibly be together with the Health

and Nutrition Specialist covering our county. More information will be coming soon.

New Business- - Committee sign-ups were sent around with everyone that signed up asked to meet at 6pm in January. The Regional Energizer will be held on January 27 at the Clinton Middle School; with the deadline for registration being January 12. The deadline for Regional Rep. Appli-cations is Nov. 27. Checks will be written to Kayla Taylor and Zach Jones for half of the trip expense to National Congress. The Hall of Fame nominations are due on January 31. There was discussion of several possible names. Marti Zumbrunnen and (Gerald Zumbrunnen) were nomi-nated by Bailey Carter and seconded by Brendon Engeman, the motion passed. Donna Engeman will check with Marti to make sure that she will be okay with the nomination. Other names to consider are Charlotte Rotert, Laura Henny, Donald and Janette Rotert and Alvin and Betty Crooks. 4-H’ers of the month are due by the 20th each month – please keep track of your clubs due dates. Jessalyn Caple, Allison Tenholder and Emma Swaters with the Hippology project asked for money to pay for their curriculum materials and project supplies along with half of their team shirts. After discussion, Brendon Engeman made a motion to pay $190.00 for half of their team shirt expens-es and $211.40 for materials. Keon Engeman seconded the motion and then there was a question for more discussion. After further discussion, the motion was amended to pay approximately $300.00 to cover the curriculum materials and project supplies along with the fee for digitizing their shirt logo. The amended motion was then seconded by Keon Engeman and passed by the council. The Vet Science project also needs new and updated curriculum, after discussion of using regional funds to purchase the curriculum; Abbie Noble made the motion to use the funds from the regional account for our county to update their curriculum. Jessalyn Caple seconded the motion; the motion passed. Pam Jones mentioned that B&B Theaters are not willing to have a Christmas movie again this year to help with the replenishing the Samaritan Center with food. The Clinton Cool Cats 4-H Club is going to make a monetary donation again this year and asked if other clubs wanted to con-tribute to the center as well. The 4-H Club leaders will ask their clubs and get back to Zach or Pam Jones to let them know what their club has contributed.
