Prayer of Confession

Merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

Through your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your name. Amen.

Song of Forgiveness

Kyrie have mercy

Words of Assurance

Pastor: Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners;

that proves God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

People: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

All: Glory to God. Amen.

Scripture Reading Ephesians 5:1-2,15-20

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and

gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Be careful then how you live,

not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil.

So do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, as you sing

psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the

Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the

name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lector: This is the Word of God for the people of God.

People: Thanks be to God!

Sermon Rev. David Hockett

Affirmation of Faith, No. 881 The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, dead, and buried;

the third day he rose from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;

from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

Lesser Doxology, 3rd - 4th cent.; music: Michael E. Ekbladh, 2011

Prayers of the People

The pastor will end each petition with: Lord, in your mercy,

to which the congregation responds: Hear our prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever. Amen.

On-Campus COVID Updates

Due to the rise in positive COVID tests and related hospitalizations, the reports of fully vaccinated

persons contracting the Delta variant, and the possibility of COVID transmission by persons who

have been vaccinated, going forward, we join the CDC and our Annual Conference in encouraging

the wearing of masks at all indoor ministry activities, including worship. (Children under the age of

five are exempt.) We have been and remain a mask friendly campus and believe this honors our

commitment to radical hospitality and our desire to care for one another.

*Childcare during the 9:00 a.m. worship service has resumed. Children ages four and under

Disciple 1 Class The Disciple series of Bible Study promotes small group study by organizing the

material, bringing to light both cultural and political contexts of the day, and helps us see the relevance of

Scripture in today’s world. You also gain the fellowship, insights, and confidentiality of others on this

journey, all while being held accountable to daily reading and weekly sharing. This study begins Sunday,

September 12 through May 22, 2022 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. in Room 212/214. Register on the church

website under Registrations. Contact Tom Peckham at [email protected] for information.

Church Wide Book Study The Adult Faith Formation Committee announces our second six-week

Church-Wide Book Study September 12 - October 17, with readings that coincide with each Sunday’s

sermon. You may participate by listening to the sermons, reading the book, and/or joining a small

discussion group. In our selected book, Five Practices for Fruitful Living, United Methodist Bishop

Robert Schnase poses these questions: How do we cultivate a life that is purposeful, deep, and fruitful?

What are the commitments, critical risks, and personal practices that open us to God’s grace? How can we

discover the spiritual life and the difference God intends for us to make in the world? We explore answers

to these questions by looking at five practices: Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Faith

Development, Risk-Taking Mission and Service, and Extravagant Generosity.

We hope that you will prayerfully consider participating in this study; it promises to nourish us individually

and as a congregation. You will need to provide your own copy of the book. If you are interested in being

part of a small group, please contact Sherry Carpenter at [email protected].
