PASTOR'S MESSAGE Dear DUMC Friends and Family,

It hardly seems possible that our time together has come to an

end. I want to say that it has been an honor to serve at Davidsonville UMC. Six years ago, our lives became connected

and linked when I began serving as your pastor. It has been a challenging six years, both professionally and personally, and it

has been a time that I have been blessed to experience the love of Christ through so many of you. I have reflected on our time together and will continue to do that over the next several

weeks.

Many of you have inspired me through your personal examples of a faith in action. I have been privileged to be invited into

your lives, sometimes into the inner sacred moments of life where you are most vulnerable, moments of change, joy, loss, or hope. You have shared with me your stories, and you have

spoken of moral victories and deepening faith. You have shared with me some of your deep wounds and heaviest burdens, and

you have let me pray for you and with you.

I have been inspired and have grown through these encounters with you. Some of you have been like a Barnabas to me, and I am truly grateful for the encouragement and grace shared with

me.

Faith is about trusting in the Holy Spirit and stepping out when you are not so sure what lies ahead -- having faith that God is

there in the unknown. This is one of those times for me; an old Chinese proverb calls times like these a “dangerous

opportunity,” and we really need God with us in those

dangerous opportunities. This is a time of transition and change, and there’s no way to avoid it. It is a time for all of us

to grow in love and grace so that our lives will be transformed more into what God hopes for us to be and so that we can be

people who transform our little corner of the world into the place God intends it to be.

Over the years, I have learned that struggle, uneasiness, and sometimes pain, can

strengthen one’s faith. One of the keys to making it through is to recognize that God is

in charge. Another key is to remember that we don’t have to make the journey alone.

There have been many who have guided us along the way. If we are wise, we will realize

that we don’t have to wrestle all the way through it by ourselves. We’ve been blessed to

have those who have gone on before us and were willing to share the journey with us.

I pray that like me, you have grown by the

relationship we have with each other. I pray

that you have grown in your faith as much as I have grown.

You have challenged me, loved me, taught

me, stressed me out at times, and yes, even irritated me a few times, and I am sure you can say the same of me. However, without a

doubt, you have shown me an incredible amount of grace, love, and Christian

friendship.

Last Sunday I tried to be lighthearted while also being serious-- it was an emotional day for me. I shared with you an entertaining

DUMC Top Ten list that I will share with Pastor Wendy next time I see her. Please

remember that there are many more things that I could have added!

10. The Green Cathedral. The Green Cathedral is a unique worship space. I am

sorry that we haven’t been out there this year except for Easter Sunday. Five years ago this

week, we rededicated the space, and I was

looking forward to dedicating the new cross

that now stands behind the altar. 9. The senior luncheons. These events are

catered by the best caters in downtown Davidsonville and are not to be missed, plus

the gathering is always fun.

8. Mother-daughter banquets – where else can you go and have a whole evening complete

with appetizers, a sit-down dinner with dessert, a souvenir photo, and great

entertainment completely produced by a group of guys honoring the women at DUMC?

7. Strawberry and Peach festivals – some way and somehow these events are pulled off by an

amazing and gifted group of individuals in the church. The local community looks forward

to these festivals every year, and it is a great chance to thank them for supporting the

church activities.

6. Dot Wood’s deviled eggs, love them! – If

you’re nice to Dot, she will save a small stash for you to enjoy or to take home later.

5. That no two donuts are alike – seriously,

this is true. There was quite an uproar when we tried a different donut company a few years ago for fellowship time. Don’t mess

with the early service’s donuts. Nothing is worth the fall out for messing with the donuts.

4. Easter sunrise service –located in our

Green Cathedral at the crack of dawn. This is a favorite of mine, and it is followed by the roasting of peeps.

3. Going on ride-a-longs – working with the

county police as a chaplain comes with some perks. First, you find out where all the speed

traps are in your district. Second, you get a discount on your meals at a few cop friendly establishments, and lastly, and most

importantly, you get to represent the congregation of DUMC to those that are

serving our community and help to keep us

safe.

2. Never, and I mean never, step into that church elevator without someone that you

trust and have assigned to make sure you don’t end up stuck between floors. It seems

like a glorified dumb waiter.

1. The famous giving tree – located in the prime real estate just outside the fellowship hall, it is closer to being completed than before I got here! It is almost a miracle.

And lastly, because this is a baker’s dozen, and I know I must stop at some point. Most importantly,

I have learned in my six years at Davidsonville is that people become like family in a short time, and it is because of this I really dislike saying good-bye.

So I have decided that I will not say good-bye; I will only say till the next time we are together, take care of yourself and those fellow disciples that God puts on the same path with you. I thank you for

allowing me to serve among you and with you. We have had quite an adventure together these six years. Thank you for your love and support, which I hope has drawn out of me the best I have had

to offer. And for the times I let you down, I am sorry and seek your grace and forgiveness. And I offer to you grace and forgiveness for the times you may of disappointed me or let me down.

Keep me in your prayers, as you will be in mine. May God be with you; May God go with you; now

and always. Go with God and Be God’s today and tomorrow.

FINANCE COMMITTEE MESSAGE

First, let me thank all of you again for your continued support of our church. As you know, our stewardship campaign is the one time when we take the pulse of the congregation to establish the budget for the coming year. That campaign won’t come until the fall, but it is time to give you a

picture of our fiscal stance for the year.

As of 30 April, we were one third (33%) of the way through the year. If we spread our budget of $389,349 evenly over 12 months, we need $32,446 per month to stay on track. Our church income is

comprised of Envelopes, Loose Plate, Sunday School, Committee Tithes, Community Donations and Crossroads Rent. The largest of these is of course the Envelope giving which is budgeted for

$334,713. Our year-to-date Envelope giving is $85,309 vs. a budgeted estimate of $111,571. This leaves a deficit of $26,262.

All is not lost! As I have told you before, there are many things that go into the budget. Faith, of

course is a big one, as well as our giving history. Although the budget is spread out fairly evenly, our history of giving is not. We usually see a tremendous increase in giving in the last quarter of the year. (Do taxes ring a bell?) Some folks simply don’t respond to the campaign with a pledge but give

faithfully. This is okay, but it does cause some stress for the Finance Committee!

I am confident that by the end of the year we will meet our budget requirements. To date we are meeting all of our obligations. We are, however, coming into that time of the year when vacations

and other activities cause folks to miss church. If you do, keep that in mind when the offering plate comes around in order to keep your pledge (or non-pledge) on track.

The easiest thing for us to do is take what we have for granted. Each week as we raise that offering

plate on the altar, we thank God for the blessings He bestows on us each and every day. As I like to say, “waking up on the right side of the grass is a good thing.” All things come from Him!

As we learned in our sermon series on The Call, we are all called. Our church serves as an instrument

for us to do God’s work. Your giving, time and talents are the fuel for us to fulfill that call.

COUNCIL NOTES

Wow! What a year already. I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes as I deployed at

the beginning of the year. I know it seemed like I would never actually leave. I would particularly like to thank those that reached out to my family while I was gone. I was well trained and prepared

for what I did; my family did not receive any special training on any of my deployments. Finally, I’d like to thank Lee for holding down the Council fort. I would encourage other committees to adopt the position of vice-chair, many hands make light work. The advantage is that if you declare a

vice chair it is a very simple matter to continue your committee’s business at Council when we can readily recognize the vice chair.

So, several things have changed at the church while I was gone. While change can be an intimidating issue, I want to encourage everyone to embrace the coming months with open minds

and open hearts, but most of all active participation. DUMC is the church that we make it. In the coming days, the service may not be exactly what we expected or sometimes desired. We should hope to discover how Christ speaks to us in each and every sermon and event. Our role is to

endeavor to follow the example that Christ left to us. It is my sincere belief that if we approach our fellowship in the correct mindset, none will be disappointed.

Council met in April and in May. Highlights follow:

Finance reported that the church is fundamentally fiscally sound. The Finance committee is

blessed with the relative recent addition of Paula Tidwell (aka awesome graph maker!). For those that have not served on Finance, it is more art than science, and it necessitates a great deal of faith. The committee is working diligently to find a way to present the church’s

financial status in concise terms for each of you. You may have noticed the bulletin now contains the receipts from the previous week. In the coming weeks, the committee will

endeavor to refine the report to tell more of the story.

SPRC reported they have absolutely nothing to do these days. Ok, I jest. Take a moment to

thank these committee members, they drew the short straws for 2016, and they are BUSY! Farewells, hirings, interviews, job descriptions, contracts, and anything else, they are doing it.

I think that the last time I wrote for The LampLighter, the Crossroads Committee was busy welcoming a new Durbin to our Christian family. While I was gone, the Baltimore Washington Conference chose to move one of our favorite sons, Pastor Kyle, to Frostburg,

MD. It is an assignment worthy of his and his family’s talents, but we will miss them and the increased separation. Most of all, we will miss Joanna, who in her role as CCDC director,

acquired a good daycare program and transformed it into a preeminent local daycare.

Trustees announced the selection of a chair, congratulations, Steve Arslanian. The Trustees

have already prioritized the elevator and the donut room as issues to address.

Worship and Evangelism has worked with Education and adjusted service times. While we will

soon adjust the services to 8:30 and 10 for the summer, when the next school year commences we will adjust to 9:00 and 11:00. This will allow time for Sunday school in

between services.

Hugh’s concert was so well received that Union Memorial UMC has requested an encore performance on 18 June, time TBD. If you missed the last performance, you should not miss

this one.

Mission and the Tongues of Fire BBQ Ministry team are examining several local projects to

include Union Memorial, and Woodwardville.

Social Needs and Outreach, this is not just your vampire (Blood Drive) and lunch committee. If

you want to ensure that you are a sheep and not a goat, I would encourage you to serve with

Social Needs and Outreach or the Sunshine Committee. Seriously, it takes special people. Show up, and you’ll find out why.

Youth Council, I’m not going to enumerate all the activities and contributions the Youth Group have made. I’m going to tell you that the Youth have re-organized themselves to function

like an adult church committee and they are running themselves with minimal adult supervision. They are active in the search process for a new youth pastor. There are,

however, some growing pains. As we approach festivals, there is no longer an adult that assigns youth. They are an independent committee, and requests should be directed to their leadership. This will be a minor adjustment for all of us, but remember the pledge we make

at a baptism, new membership, or confirmation, that we will advise, instruct, and support them in their journey.

United Methodist Men cleared the annual hurdle, Golf Tournament, Mother/Daughter Banquet (how about the villain?), and scholarships. It is two months of the year that makes it

hard to find Presidents to serve; thanks Guy!

United Methodist Women are the smallest and most generous group around.

Finally, the sub-committee on the Giving Tree has completed their research into names. The leaves should be completed and on the leafless tree soon.

Dear DUMC Folks, Your SPRC is engaged in a number of things, on your behalf, and we would like to update you:

Pastor Lisa’s Farewell Dinner is Saturday, 4 June at 6 p.m. Don't forget to RSVP, and please provide the side dish you are bringing.

Pastor Wendy Van Vliet - SPRC will be providing opportunities for families to host get-

togethers with Pastor Wendy, setting up opportunities for groups and committees to sit down

with her, and providing information on how we can assist her in settling into the DUMC

family and Davidsonville. Stay tuned, please. New Youth Pastor - Search Committee is set with Don Simpson and Arielle Hall as Co-

Chairs. The Youth are working on skills, characteristics and other things they would like to see in a new Youth Pastor. SPRC is working with them on job description and job posting. Please note we are proceeding with the understanding that Pastor Wendy will be involved in

final decision on selection. Please keep the Search Committee in your prayers. New CCDC Director - SPRC Committee Members assigned to the CCDC Committee are

engaged in the search process. SPRC plays a role in the interview process. Employee Job Descriptions - all job descriptions for church employees are being updated and

will be worked on along with input from the employee. Conflict Resolution - SPRC, in coordination with the Council, continues to assess our well-

being as a body of believers and examine tools that are available. We will work closely with

Pastor Wendy on our well-being as a community. SPRC Strengthening - we are looking for ways and means to grow as a team to better serve

you and the staff, through study, day retreat time and other means. Let us hear from you with suggestions.

DUMC Performance Camp 11 – 15 July 2016

Ages 7-12 A day camp experience that culminates in a performance of an original musical play Friday

afternoon for family and friends to marvel! We welcome would-be actors and singers for a unique experience. Participants should bring lunch and drink daily; a mid-morning snack will be provided.

2016 Scholarship Winners Since 2004, 60 college scholarships have been awarded to DUMC members and/or members of the

DUMC Youth Group. The purpose of the scholarships is to assist young people in continuing their education and to jump start post-high school continuing education.

We congratulate this year’s scholarship winners!

Maggi Adey received the Doris Cummins Memorial Scholarship. Maggi will graduate from Southern High School and will attend Gordon College in Wenham, MA.

Amber Jordan received the Wood Memorial Scholarship. She will graduate from South River High School and will attend Villanova University.

Dylan Jordan received the William Scrimgeour Memorial Scholarship. Dylan will graduate from

South River High School and will attend West Virginia University.

Bailey Masters received the Oscar Grimes Memorial Scholarship. Bailey will graduate from

Jefferson High School, Charles Town, WV and will attend Anne Arundel Community College.

Without the generosity of these groups, we would be unable to provide scholarships. Your

continued support is a blessing not only to the youth, but to the entire DUMC family.

Missions Update

As this article is being written, preparations are well underway by the Tongues of Fire (TOF) BBQ

Ministry Team for the imminent celebration of the Strawberry Festival. That event will mark the second fundraiser for the team this year. In April, along with UMM selling boardwalk fries and the

youth holding a car wash, TOF had a successful sandwich sale. Some of the members of the team are shown on that date in the accompanying photos.

For the Strawberry Festival some 50 pounds of top sirloin, 250 pounds of Boston butts, and 120 pounds of chickens will be dressed, caressed, rubbed and smoked. Sauces will be made from scratch,

along with fantastic house-made coleslaw, and Joann’s BBQ beans. Additionally, a case of lemons will be squeezed to generate two gallons of juice and 2 ½ gallons of simple syrup with be made for

lemonade, and iced tea and sweet tea concentrates will be generated.

On the day of the festival, a crew of 24 will be needed to pull off a successful sale -- this time with some invited guests to fill in for those on the team who will be away. Funds raised will then be split with a tithe going to the DUMC Operating Fund, 65% to Volunteers In Mission (VIM), and the

balance of 25% staying with TOF for worthy causes and expenses, such as the recent funding of the

$1000 William Scrimgeour Scholarship.

Missions was not able to find enough participants for an adult VIM trip earlier this year. So the

funds not spent for that will be going to other outreach programs. Prime among those will be to help fund the Backpack Program operated through the Rotary Club of South Anne Arundel County. It provides weekend meals during the school year for 139 needy children in South County. A major

event related to that is the club’s Quacks For Backpacks Rubber Duck Race and Family Festival to be held at Homestead Gardens on Sunday,5 June from 11 to 4. Great fun!!

Another recipient for VIM funds will be DUMC’s neighbors in Christ at Union Memorial UMC. They are in dire need of a new handicapped ramp and other repairs. Other projects will be

considered once Pastor Wendy is in place.

Sound like fun? Well, both TOF and VIM are always looking for new participants.

Thank you to Hugh Brodsky, our organist, for his presentation of A Celebration of Afro-American

Music. Many different genres of music were covered including gospel, Ragtime, and jazz.

It truly was a one-man show that was both entertaining and informative, and Hugh even did the

splits after performing a James Brown tune. Thanks again, Hugh!

Fairways of Faith

Crofton Country Club hosted DUMC’s 20th annual Fairways of Faith Golf Tournament. The event

was organized by the United Methodist Men and raised $5,000 to support the church’s Youth

Service Project, repairing homes for needy families.

The tournament highlight was the presentation of the Carpenters Cup to the winning church team.

This year’s winner was Community United Methodist’s team of Charlie Moore, Rev. Debbie Scott, Nick Kemp and David Owen.

The event featured a hole-in-one contest with prizes sponsored by Lexus of Annapolis and a hit the cow contest sponsored by Chick-fil-A of Edgewater.

Green Cathedral Gets New Cross Last year, Adam Schmitt identified that the

cross at the Green Cathedral was rotting and needed to be replaced.

He located 12 foot and eight foot pieces of solid oak that would be perfect to create a new cross. He worked on it with his son, Richard,

during the winter and installed it with Richard, Eric, and Michael in the rain, so it

would be ready for our first outdoor worship service that was to be on 1 May.

Unfortunately, it has rained every weekend, and we have not been outdoor for a service

yet. We hope to be outside for our first Green

Cathedral worship service on Sunday, 5 June at 8:30a.m.

Adam also made small crosses out of the salvaged wood of the old cross, and they are

given out at baptisms, confirmation and weddings. His hope is that they will be treasured and serve as a small reminder of the

old cross that stood for so many years. Please join us in thanking Adam and his

family for the beautiful new cross in our Green Cathedral.

Connie’s Corner Dear Christian Friends,

Here we are embarking on a new summer.

Time for fun, relaxation, and adventure. Time to do things never done before and time to go places never before seen. Time to make new

memories, and time to move on. Time to taste a little sunshine mixed with a splash of warm

rain (but only at night). And, of course, the best bit about summer is that it’s over before

you have a chance to get tired of it. I guess I’m personalizing a tad to speak about moving

on. Sigh.

As Lucy said to Charlie Brown, “Sorry I

missed that catch; I just got to thinking about how many others I’d missed and the past got

in my eyes.” Before you kiss today goodbye, remember the friend you have in Jesus who held your hand through the yesterdays, carried

you through today, and will walk with you every step of tomorrow. Make sure you take

him on every new adventure!
