OCTOBERThe view that leads from the kitchen window 11
never more alluring. it seems to me, than dun.spring's golden days. The seashore beckons aO'Olltintervening miles; the golf course, ev~n in pre-sumDWl'heat, is cool and inviting; and the terrace, near 11:hand, just cannot be resisted.
Up, home-makersI The Lady of the Kitchen wtDtake a short cut to-day. The October call is strong andthe timing's exactly right. The season's right, the yearis right.
Tak.e the matter of shortcakes, for instance. Theseawn's right. Yea, verily, we may choose fromfor. we're right in the midst of a teeming varietyfruIts; some of them are yet to come in their fullalglory, others are now at the height.
When the dessert decision is made-and we'vedecided on shortcake, the remainder of the mealalways seems much easier to plan. That "one hot dish"
SHORT CUTSw-night, shall it be soup, a hot meat, or a vegetable? No matter how warm the weather, we need one hotdish for good dIgestion. We've chosen a recipe thatcalls for green peas and mushrooms sauteed together. It's simply and quickly prepared, and you may choose~esh, tinned, or frozen peas. Fit the food to yourtime and take a short cut with a tin opener if that'syour pleasure.
1£ you decide on cold meats, as we did, you take aaho!t cut in meal .preparati?n which offers greatvanety. There ~re tins and tms of beef, ham, pork, and veal.. Browsmg through the neighborhood delicatCS5an for cold cuts will suggest a great many warmweather menus to you.~nd ~en the relishes! There's a lot of hat-doffing
gomg on m our department because of relishes, pickles.

Recently, in the course of a survey we were making,we wrote to hundreds of "House ond Garden' readers.
We wanted to know how many people reod eachcopy of the magazine.
Well, now we know, and the answer pleased us verymUCh, because it was better, m!.Jch better, than wethought.
We found out that each copy sold every month isread by five or SIX people. That is a lot of readers. It means that about 0 quarter of 0 million of vou read"House and Garden".
We ore proud of that, but we couldn't hove foundout unless you hod token the trouble to reDlv to ourQuery.

One end of rectangular kitchendi¥_ 011 to make breakfast boy.
Close-up of working tobt.e reveals cup..boards which hold all eQuipment
Most women, especially those who have seen recentlydesigned ideal kitchens WIth breakfast nooks. wouldrather have the allotted square Jeet in a long narrowapartment with windows, if possible. on one long 'walland one short one. This means that the k.itchen. withoutbeing an awkward shape. can be divided easily into twoseparate bays; one, the work.ing kitchen proper. the otherthe breakfast bay. The partition that divides them neednot extend more than half.way across the room, but itc~rries on one side a third of the work.ing kitchen equipment, and on the other either the built·in seats of thebreakfast bay or a form of "sideboard" unit.
BREAKFAST BAY
This breakfast bay. of course. has plenty of otheruses in a familv. and it's better than the usual centralk.itchen table for jobs lik.e sortlng the laundry. machme

Four major types of wire were identified, as well as
a group of miscellaneous objects. These first four types
could be further subdivided according to size and shape.
The types were mesh, chicken wire, straight wire and barbed
wire.
This was attached to a stick O.73mlong and 5rom wide. (Therefore, itwas found that there were sixsubtypes of mesh wire).
0.7m long
0.42 wide
Chicken Wire
This is wire which is twisted to ·form a hexagonal pattern.
The wire can be twisted in two ways - either along the two
parallel vertical sides of the mexagon or along two parallel
diagonal sides. It can be twisted together tightly or loosely.
This type of wire ranged from bei~g small to extremely large
in the size of the hexagons, and thus twelve sub-types were
identified.
Type F
Type A 1.S9m long
0.85m wide
Type B 0.8m long
0.49m wide
Type C 1.03m long
0.49m wide
Type D 0.33m. long
0.24m wide
Type E 0.27m long:
O.lSm wide. There were more pieces of this
type but they were too distorted
to measure.
Samples were taken from larger pieces of wire. The
measurements given are of the latter. Mesh is formed when
thin pieces of wire are laid out in strips and other pieces
are woven in and out of them at right angles. Thus a
square pattern is created. Types A-F range from a fine to
a large mesho

Straight Wire
This ,type ranged from extremely fine to very thick.
The only variability therefore is in the width of the
wire. ' There were sixteen sub-types of this kind.
Barbed Wire
Variation was apparent in the number of barbs, and the
ways in which the two pieces of wire were twisted together.
This ranged from being extremely uniform in the coils of
the wire to crudely twisted, that is hapazard in the nature
of the c?ils. It was according to these characteristics
that six sub-types of barbed wire were discovered.
Miscellaneous
A vast range of objects were identified from this
group. Among these were metal bed springs and rods for the
edge of a bed; long ribbons of metal about 3cm in width for
tieing up packs of fruit; evidence of the orcharding period
of the property; a stainless steel bar from an electric
radiator; an electricity control 50pV, 15 amp from a stove;
several pieces of electric wiring both with and without
insulation; wire cable; three pieces from an electric
toaster; metal front of a gate; metal bird cages; and
finally a stretched spring, possibly of a tractor arm.
