OUR DESIRE

Since the days we wer^e in Joi^son Bible College we have had a fervCnt- ^Sire to do all wecould for the cause of Wbrli-Wide Evangelism,The main theme of oiir ministry in churches wehave served has been World-Evangelism, and weencouraged and promoted the support of missionwork both at home and abroad.

It was not until I964 that we first felt theLord leading us toward the mission field. InSeptember of that year Max Ward Randall wrote

Page 3: Davis Dean Judy 1967 Zambia

concerning Zambia, "We need helpers—co-workers!Not just one or two, but a dozen or more families; and they are needed at once. In thecities we need missionaries. Lusaka, the capital of Zambia, has already begun construction of68,000 new African homes, anticipating a phenom-inal population increase of more than 500*000people in the next four years." When we readthese word.f_it seemed the Lord was speaking directly to us. After much prayer and study andmany hours spent talking with Max and GladysRandall we have developed a burning desire to goto Lusaka, Zambia that the Gospel may be preached among the Africans who know not Jesus. Uponarriving in this capital city of Lusaka we willendeavor to establish self supporting churches'qf Christ among the African people. Our emphasisT^ll be wholly evangelistic. We desire to leavefor Zambia in the early summer of 1967*

OUR woriT

The new African nation of Zambia was, k^own asNorthern Rhodesia until October 1964* IwJen thisformer British Protectorate received its independence. Zambia lies within the tropics ofCentral Africa, and is, a wealthy countryisupplying a large percentage of the worldla/copper.Modern cities such as/Lusaka, Livingston, Ndola, and Broken Hill reflect the modern new emergingAfrica. Never was there a time of greaterchallenge and opportunity in Zambia,,than at thisvery moment. We must take advantage of thesenew opportunities to preach the Gospel and establish churches to meet ;the/s^ritual demandsof the new Africa. A strong witness for N. T.Christianity in the capital city of Lusaka cancarry a tremendous impact toward developingZambia into a Christian nation.

The country is now open to the Christianmissionary. Let us step through these doorsnow that Christ may be known.

"Awake to righteousness, and sin not, forsome have not the knowledge of God: I speak thisto your shame." (l Cor. 15:54)

"AMBASSADORS FOR CHRIST" IN CENTRAL AFRICA. (II Corinthians 5:20)

Volume 1 February 1967 Number 1

Greetings in Our Lord Jesus ChristThis, the first issue of the ZAMBIA MESSENGER, brings you greetings in the name of Christ

frort the Davis family. The Lord willing, the ZAMBIA MESSENGER, will be a regular visitor inyour home to share with you our experiences, victories, and joys as we prepare for, and dothe work in Central Africa to which God hascalled us.

Many wonderful things have happened andmany doors have been opened since last Julywhen, we left our ministry with the Cap>ellaChurch at King, North Carolina. Each day wethank God for His guidance and for all of Hiswonderful people it has been our privilege tomeet and know. Traveling and speaking for

^Christ and His needs in Zambia has certainlyjeep a rich and rewarding experience. So manytimes we have taken for granted the fact thatthe best people in all the world are God'speople. However, this fact is now a glowingreality as we have witnessed it over and overagain. One of the greatest thrills we haveexperienced is that of seeing how God's peopleare prising to meet the tremendous needs ofworld evangelism, not only in Zambia, butthroughout the world. We praise God for allthose who continue to see the vision, acceptthe venture, and share in the victory which onlyChrist can bring.

The most difficult part has been the separation of our family for several weeks at a time

Cindy, Dean, Judy, and Jimmy Davis

while I travel and Judy, Jimmy and Cindyremain at our home in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. However, this is a minor thing when we consider the wonderful grace of God which issufficient for all things. Jimmy and Cindy aredoing well in school, and Judy is keeping quitebusy with the duties of a housewife, speakingfrom time to time in area churches, and helpingwith a youth group at the Cooperstown ChristianChurch where they attend. We are all well, and happy with the anticipation of leaving forZambia in June of 1967. Continue to pray forus as preparations are made.

God's People Rise to Meet the Needs

MEET OUR FORWARDING AGENTS

Annie Lou, Jack, Randall, and Karen Patterson

There are many ways in which the Lord hasprepared us for the work to which He has nowcalled us in Zambia. At the same time He has

continued to open doors of opportunity whichhas led us thus far to this field of service. Many times we did not know the reason for thepreparations or where stepping through thedoors of opportunity would lead us. Only aswe look back can we truly appreciate the waythe Lord leads in all things.

One of these many blessings has been theaquaintance with the Jack Patterson familyof King, North Carolina. We firmly believe thatGod directed when these fine Christian peopleconsented to serve as our forwarding agents. They have a deep concern for the cause ofworld evangelism and feel that this is a meansby which they can serve God in places wherethey cannot go. Already they have assumed abig responsibility for us which leaves us freeto do other necessary workand correspondance. If you have shared in sending funds for ourwork in Zambia, you or your congregation havereceived a letter and receipt from them. All thework they do is without pay, except for thegreatreward Godhas laid up for themin Heaven.

Jack is an elder and Bible school teacherin the Capella Church of Christ at King, NorthCarolina. He works in the office of E. T. &W. N. C. Trucking Company in Winston-Salem,North Carolina. (Continued on page 4)

As we have traveled and presented theneeds of Christ in Zambia, the response thatyou people of God have made has been bothgratifying and humbling. As you know, theminimum goal for monthly committed supportwhich we setwas $1,000. The Lord has blessed, through you His people, far beyond our greatestexpectations. At this time there has been $938a month committed. This means that already weare close to the minimum goal which we hadset. However, this does not mean that no morecommitted support is needed because the moresupport we have the broader our scope can b^*sand the more we will be able to accomplis*.once we are in Zambia. In a recent letter from

Don Mechem, who is in Zambia, he said ". . .let me tell you that every dollar will be needed. We have been averaging over $1,000 per monthbut it seems like it doesn't last any time at all."

We do want to say from the bottoms of ourhearts "THANK YOU" to all you wonderfulpeople who have made committments to ourwork for Christ. May God bless you richly asyou serve Him. We shall always endeavor touse the Lord's money wisely for the salvationof souls.

I have a full schedule of speaking engagements, mission revivals, Faith-Promise ralliesand area mission rallies from now until thefirst of May.We will continue to present the needsof Zambia and endeavor to challenge God'speople for the cause of world evangelism.

ZAMBIA TODAYThe young African republic of

Zambia still grapples with monumentalproblems, but the pace she has setreveals a nation anxious to catch upwith modern society. In the brief timesince the midnight moments on October24, 1964, when following Bible readingand prayers, two men stepped quietlyfrom their places on the dias andwalked together in silence into thearena of Independence Stadium inLusaka — one the outgoing British

^governor, the other the incomingpresident — the world has been arespectful witness to the reverentregard in which the Zambians holdkwacha (freedom)!

Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, the firstpresident of Zambia is concerned with the future of his new nation. He knows the future lies inwhat it reads and what it learns. In Zambia, as elsewhere throughout Africa, reading material isscarce and books are too expensive for the majority. Answering the questions: "What will theyread?" "Where will they be led?" the nation of Zambia placed one of the largest Bible orders onrecord with the American Bible Society to help meet this need. Zambia is concerned with thespiritual welfare of her people. Each school, public and private, begins the day with devotionsand Bible reading, and prayers are a part of every Zambian's education.

President Kenneth Kaunda declared the first anniversary of the nation's independence anoccasion of nationwide daily Bible reading for a period of two months, October 25 through December 25, and concluded with a Christmas Day message by the President. A life-long Bible readerhimself, a fact of which most of his people are well aware, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda proposed to his3,700,000 countrymen: "Let's read the Bible together." Urging Zambians to rely upon faith inGod for the future of their young country, the President's message also stated: "Much has beendone and is apparent to all. . .but it was not done by hard work alone, but by faith,". . .There isno doubt in my mind that these (our own efforts) alone would have been ineffective if we had notput our faith in God and asked his blessing on our endeavors."

^ The President has also on numerous occasions praised the work of the Christian missionaries..^and urged many more to work in Zambia with his people.

Zambia is a country where we now have an unparalle led opportunity to preach the Gospel andestablish churches after the simple New Testament pattern. Pray that we might find even moreopportunities as we eagerly prepare to enter this country just a few months from now.

Speaking engagements have taken me through North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida,Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas. We have been very fortunate this past yearto have Sandy Huls living with us. She is thedaughterofMr. and Mrs.MelHuls of Montgomery,Alabama. Her father was transferred to Alabamain his work, and Sandy being a senior in highschool wanted to finish her schooling here inIllinois. Jimmy and Cindy are very proud of theirbig "sister," and want to take her to Zambiawith us. However, Sandy plans to continue hereducation and become a teacher. She has been

Departure Dote Set

for June 15

June 15 is the day we will board the plane at O'Hare Field in Chicago, Illinois, to begin ourtrip to Zambia. We will fly from Chicago directly to Gothenburg, Sweden. There, at the factory, wewill pick up the Volvo station wagon, with right hand drive, which we will take to Zambia for

transportation.

^ Wewill drive from Sweden through Germany,Switzerland and on to Brindisi, Italy, where wewill board the MS" Europia on June 30 and saildown the East coast of Africa to Beira. From

there we plan to drive through Rhodesia up toZambia, arriving the 17th or 18th of July.

While we are in Switzerland we will be

attending the Lugano Retreat for a few days. This is a meeting of all the European missionraries which is held annually at Lugano, Switzerland. Welook forward to this fellowship withthe brethren there.

Housing Problem in ZambiaAs we eagerly anticipate our arrival in

Zambia and the work that faces us, we thrillat the opportunity of preaching the "unsearchable riches of Christ" to thousands who have

never heard.

However, in recent letters from those whoare in Zambia, we have received informationthat due to the tremendous population growthin the cities, there is a terrible housing shortage, In fact, it seems that it is next to impossible to find anything in a reasonable pricerange. Some who are already there have haddifficulty finding needed housing in the cities.

We have continued to depend heavily uponGod, through prayer, that He would lead anddirect and supply the needs to accomplish thetask before us. We are confident that He has

opened the doors that have led us thus far andare equally as confident that He will open thedoor for our housing arrangements. We ask thatyou PRAY WITH US for the fulfillment of thisneed, not only in our behalf, but in behalf ofothers who are facing the same problem inZambia.
