Competency/ Objectives
• Competency: Students will demonstrate an understanding of the powers and duties of the Presidency.
• SWBAT: Identify qualifications listed in the Constitution for president and vice president.
• SWBAT: Understand the function of the line of succession.
• SWBAT: Discuss the significance of the 20th and 22nd amendment.
• SWBAT: Identify current presidential leaders and there party platforms.
The Presidency
• Constitution sets forth 3 qualifications:
1. Be a native-born U.S. Citizen
2. Be at least 35 years of age
3. Have been a resident of the United States for at least 14 years.
• 4 year terms• 22nd Amendment (1951) set a
two term limit to the Presidency
Presidency
• Salary= $400,000• $ 50,000 non-taxable
allowance• $100,000 allowance for
travel costs• Obama is the first African
American president.• All presidents have been
Christian.
The Vice Presidency
• Serve as president if president dies.
• 8 presidents have died in office.• 1 resigned.• Serves 4 year term• Salary= 210,000 & 10,000
taxable expense allowance.• Presides over Senate but is not
a member. • President decides how involved

Rules of Succession
• If president succeeded by VP.• New President appoints new
VP with Congressional approval.
• 20th amendment gives congress power to set order of presidential succession.
