Generally, the cause of most soft tissue sarcomas is unknown. One of the few soft tissue sarcomas that has a known cause is Karposi's sarcoma. It occurs in people with defective immune systems and is caused by a virus known as human herpes virus 8 (HHV8).

Human simplex virus type 1 (HSV1): mouthHuman simplex virus type 2 (HSV2): genitalVaricellazoster virus (HHV3)EpsteinBarr virus (HHV4): monoCytomegalovirus (HHV5): immune systemHuman herpes virus 6 and 7 (HHV6 and HHV7): HIV

There are 8 different types of viruses that are known to cause sarcomas

Cell Cycle  & Cyclins

These are proteins that help regulate cell division. Sometimes, these proteins are altered causing them to malfunction (cell keeps dividing out of control).

Mitosis & Cell Cycle Notes Continued

Apoptosis: Programmed cell death that plays a key role in the development of organs and tissues.

Cyclins: Proteins that control the process of cell division.
