Day 77 – Period 3Review

Warm Up•Find the Supporting Learning Targets in

Part 3 for Covalent Bonding•Make all three statements into questions

on a white board.•Then add them to your notes!

▫Work as a table group!

A covalent bond is anytime electrons are shared between non-metals

Non-metals all want to gain electrons, so instead of transfer (give away and steal), they SHARE electrons

Electrons are re-arranged so that they share pairs of electrons

Atoms always share the same amount- like a “potluck”

Agenda•Review for Assessment (on Thursday)•Notebook Check (on Thursday)

OFFICE HOURS: AVAILABLE DURING LUNCH

TOMORROW AND THURSDAY!

Also, during tutorial on Thursday and after school

Learning Target on Thursday• LONG TERM TARGET: I can explain how ionic, covalent

and metallic bonds are formed between atoms

NEXT WEEK:• Level 4 Target: I can explain how interactions at the

level of atoms, ions and molecules result in different properties in ionic, covalent and metallic substances

• Part 5▫ I can describe what the following properties tell us about

a substance: melting point, boiling point, conductivity and solubility

▫ I can distinguish between intermolecular forces and chemical bonds

Reviewing Notes Part 2•Find the Supporting Learning Targets in

Part 4 for Metallic Bonding•Make all three statements into questions

on a white board.•Then add them to your notes!

▫Work as a table group!

Turn to your notes on Metallic Bonding

•Add the questions to them•Add additional information from the

reading last class

Is the attraction between atoms of the same metals

Energy levels of the atoms overlap

This allows free movement of electrons through the metal

▫This is called the “sea of electrons”

Attraction between electrons and different positively charged nuclei hold the metal together
