Fort Des Moines United Methodist
Church is committed to the Great
Commission given by Jesus in
Matthew 28:19-20: “Therefore go
and make disciples of all
nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit, teaching them to
obey everything I have
commanded you.”
Fort Des Moines is a caring
community of people who will care
for you regardless of who you are.
If you are looking for a place where
Christ’s love is evident and God’s
grace is offered to all, then I hope
you will join us for worship and
fellowship.
If you are visiting today, we hope
that you feel welcome. The worship
service is our gift to you. Following
this service you are invited to join us
for coffee, fellowship and
Sunday School.
We welcome children in our
worship. However, if necessary, we
do have a nursery and cry room on
the second floor. The cry room is
located on the left at the top of the
stairs and the nursery is located to
the right at the top of the stairs.

Introit TFWS #2152 “Change my Heart, O God”
Call to Worship
Leader: Today is Pentecost Sunday, the day we celebrate the birth of the
Church.
People: We come to celebrate the birth of the Church.
Leader: On that day, God sent his Holy Spirit like tongues of fire to empower
the new church to spread the gospel.
People: We thank God for that Spirit and pray for a rekindling of the
flame within the church today.
*Hymn UMH #420 “Breathe on Me, Breath of God”
Unison Prayer
Almighty God, we give you thanks for the Holy Spirit which
descended as tongues of fire on those who waited in the Upper Room. We
thank for the Church which emerged from that outpouring of the Spirit.
Refresh your Spirit and rekindle the flame in the church today. Pour out
your Spirit anew on each of us today. Amen.
Old Testament Lesson Ezekiel 37: 1-14 (NIV)
The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the
Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and
forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones
that were very dry. He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”
I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”
Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones,
hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones; I
will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you
and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you,
and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”
So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a
noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and
tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was not
breath in them.
Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say
to it, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: come, breath, from the four winds and
breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” So I prophesied as he commanded
me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood upon their feet—a vast
army.
Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They
say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’ Therefore proph-
esy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am gong
to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you up from them; I
will bring you back to the land of Israel. Then you, my people, will know that I am
the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. I will put my Spir-
it I you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will
know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.
Time with Children of God
Prayer of Confession
Pastor: Merciful God, the gift of Jesus’ life in us is visible in the way we witness
to the fruitfulness of that gift. We know that the fruit of the Spirit
consists of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. Yet, so often we put conditions on our
love—and peace are difficult to discern when our words and actions
deny their presence.
People: Hymn # 328 “Surely the Presence of the Lord”
Pastor: By desiring instant results to most things these days, we confess that
we forget what it’s like to be patient. We find ourselves neglecting the
needs of others because we run out of time to be kind to others.
People: Hymn # 503 “Let It Breathe on Me”
Pastor: When we persistently make self-centered decisions rather than Christ-
centered ones, our understanding of your goodness and faithfulness is
weakened and our discipleship lacks credibility.
People: Hymn #393 “Spirit of the Living God”
Pastor: Gracious and merciful God, grant us your forgiveness and your love so
that we may truly care for one another.
People: Refresh and renew us with the Holy Spirit so that we are
faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.
Pastoral Prayer
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.
Amen.
Epistle Lesson Acts 2:1-4 (NIV)
When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled
the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of
fire that separated and came to rest on each o them. All of them were filled with
the Holy Spirt and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
*Hymn UMH #347 “Spirit Song”
Gospel John 7:37-39 (NIV)
On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud
voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me,
as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” By this
he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to
that time the Spirit has not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
