On l'attendait depuis deux ans, encore

grisés par cette impression d'avoir vécu

une fête, un moment de joie folle et

collective et la voici de retour, la Zinneke

Parade !

Avec son million d'habitants dont 30%

d'étrangers, avec ses 140 nationalités

différentes sur l'ensemble du territoire

bruxellois, comme se plaît à le souligner

le bourgmestre de Bruxelles, Freddy

Thielemans (p 4-5), cette manifestation

bariolée a toute sa place. Cette année,

elle est placée sous le thème de l'eau et

cela devrait donner lieu à mille et un

costumes, spectacles dansés, installations

à roulettes de guingois ou monstres

balourds plus « bout de ficelle » les uns

que les autres ! Parce que la Zinneke, ça

n'est pas une Parade de l'apparat, c'est

une vraie fête pour montrer à quel point

Bruxelles la cosmopolite peut faire feu de

tout bois : ici, ça n'est pas l'argent qui

compte, c'est l'humain.

Et vous, les Européens de 27 pays

différents, venez vous joindre à cette java

populaire parce que tous, dans

l'ensemble, vous adorez Bruxelles aussi

et lui apportez un formidable souffle

nouveau. Ca n'est pas le tout de travailler

pour faire avancer la grande idée de

l'Europe, il faut vivre aussi. C'est parti !

A child of the city Freddy Thielemans

Do you often travel abroad to represent

Brussels?

« I go on seven or eight times short trips a year,

sometimes only one day. Last week, for

instance, I was in Bucharest, to support a

candidate, and my next big trip is planned for

early July, true, outside the European territory:

I’ll be going to attend the celebrations of the

400th Anniversary of Québec.»

What do people think of you?

« I believe that I am fortunate to be a child of

the city, to know it and even speak its dialects,

to take a deep interest in it, I can talk about

literature, cinema, culture in general, even

football ! And, since I’m eclectic and inquisitive,

I have something to say on all subjects. I have

an easy-going way with people, whether

they’re mayors of capitals or not (smiles) ... »

27 capitals, 27 “mayors”, what contacts and

relations among you ?

« It’s true that we are quite often in contact one

way or another. I’d say that it’s more “natural’

with those of my own political persuasion, since

we see each other during various elections, for

example. But I would also say that the European

link is forged easily since we share the same

great concerns for our respective cities: habitat

(where people live), police (how to protect

them), employment (so they may benefit from a

purchasing power) and their leisure too, ... »

Europe, an opportunity for Brussels?

« Yes, quite obviously. The power and strength

of Brussels is that the whole world knows this

city because it’s the Capital of Europe. For many

people all over the world, it is the very

embodiment of Europe. People may imagine our

city this way or that without really knowing

where to find it on the map; Europe gives it an

intellectual reality ! I can tell you a revealing

anecdote. One day, when I was in the Grand

Canyon on Route 66 in a motel belonging to the

Hualapai indians, I discovered, on the bar, ... a

miniature Atomium ! I said to them: “That’s

where I come from”, this was quite a moment: I

had entered their understanding and their

world, I didn’t come from just any old distant

place. Thankyou Expo 58 ! »

To which European cities is Brussels

closest akin ?

« As far as I’m concerned, that would have to be

London, Paris and Berlin. Because they all share

Freddy Thielemans in full spate with Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New-

York, about the “melting pot” that makes up the culture of a country.

Or in symposium with all the mayors of the capital cities of Europe. The

same, in the courtyard of the Brussels Hôtel de Ville, chatting with

tourists and rounding off his discussion with “Well, in fact, I’m the Lord

Mayor of the city!”, to the great amazement of the little group, ...

Or again, pacing the pavement, blacked up as a Noiraud to collect funds

for children in need, taking a glass here, a bite there. This is a fair

representation of the Mayor of Brussels, who has built up his mayorship

on a mix of the responsibilities inherent in the position tempered with a

real curiosity in others, whoever they happen to be, with a passion for

his city, for culture, for discussion,... hence his encyclopaedic knowledge!

Outwardly simple and good-natured but as clever as a fox, Freddy

Thielemans knows better than most how to lead the debate where he

wants it to go, and to lead the discussion in a passionate philosophical

dimension, ... No doubt he old traces of a long line of teachers in the

family ! He himself spent many years teaching germanic languages to

secondary school students before the political adventure brought him to

the ranks of the Socialist Party and various positions for the City of

Brussels. It is obvious that Europe is much more than a vague notion for

Freddy Thielemans, who spent a year as member of Parliament before

becoming the Lord Mayor of Brussels on 12 January 2001. He should

continue to hold that position until 2012.

Freddy Thielemans was born in

Laeken in 1944. Brussels born

and bred echte ket, his studies

take him as far as a

professorship. Graduate in

Commercial Sciences, he teaches

germanic languages from 1966

in various secondary schools in

the City of Brussels, ... He

enjoyed teaching and now

enjoys being in politics, for the

contact and the possibility of

“getting things going”. Mayor’s

gown and biker’s boots (he’s

mad about Harleys !), the global

vision of a city “known all over

the world, thanks to the

European institutions” and local

gossip in a café, one-of-a-kind

a great diversity. There are 140 different

nationalities in the Greater Brussels area !

Let’s be clear: Madrid also evidently has a

presence and impressive energy at European

level, but these four capitals, to my mind, are the

exemplary places of a past and present history

that speak to people’s heads and refer them to

immediate European memories.»

What are the Europeans bringing to

Brussels?

« It’s great to see that the majority of the

European officials will be staying here until their

retirement. And despite all my fond feelings for

Strasbourg, I’m not at all sure that the city can

inspire the same rate of adhesion as ours ! I

think that, if Belgians and the people of Brussels

can be pessimistic about Brussels-Halle-

Vilvoorde and the future of a whole country,

their own, there is a force of optimism and even

love among the Europeans who adhere to the

singular culture it offers them. And thus it was

that they also constructed the city.»

Europe, in practice ?

« I speak French, Dutch, and English and I can

get by in German, Spanish and Italian.

Of course I feel deeply European, and that’s no

nebulous sentiment or camouflage ! For me

Europe is, first and foremost, the sense of a

shared culture which is also diversified. The great

movements of philosophical thought, for

example, brought progress to all the countries of

Europe, even if they did not all follow the same

path of development. You can’t think Wagner

without Bayreuth, true, but you can’t think

Wagner without also thinking Paris ! In the same

way, you can’t imagine Europe without the

World Expo of 1958, ... »

Optimistic about a common future

between Brussels and Europe ?

« Yes. More than the law, it’s the records that

legitimize power. And the records, even IT

records, even centralized on an army of hard

disks, that doesn’t just go away..

historically in Brussels. The administrative capital

and the beating heart of Europe will always be

in Brussels. »

Thrust and parry The European city where you could

see yourself living ?

– Barcelona. It’s a city not unlike Brussels,

with its labyrinthine political past and its

extraordinary cultural wealth.

Your favourite colour ?

– Red, ... and scarlet, the colour of the

City of Brussels.

Your favourite fictional hero ?

– The detective Pepe Carvalho, a hero

from the books of Spanish author

It’s not only Rock ’n’ Roll, Baby !

This summer, the Palais des Beaux-Arts

has the hottest tickets in town with

« It’s not only Rock ’n’ Roll, Baby ! »,

which throws a completely new light on rock

and art. It tells the story of rock musicians

who started out in the world of art. Around

twenty icons from the international rock

scene are together exhibiting their works. The

exhibition features musicians from the 1970s

to today. Leading lights such as Yoko Ono,

Patti Smith and Lou Reed, but also

contemporary musicians such as Chicks on

Speed, Antony (Antony and the Johnsons),

The Kills, Pete Doherty and the Belgian rocker

Bent van Looy (Das Pop).

The exhibition presents the work of rockers

who started out as plastic artists before

becoming renowned musicians. The public

will thus discover an important production of

works that are often less known that their

authors’ musical achievements. The selected

artists-musicians show how rock and art are

inextricably linked in their world.

It’s not only Rock ’n’ Roll, Baby ! is an

exceptional cooperation between the Palais

des Beaux-Arts and the Rock Werchter festival

– one of the largest European festivals that is

being held for the 33rd time this year. Several

events and performances linked to the

exhibited artists are planned this summer. A

Lou Reed concert is announced for the 16th of

July in the Salle Henry Le Boeuf. Moreover, on

the 27th of May, the Palais des Beaux-Arts will

be showing a preview of the film Shine a

Light, Martin Scorsese’s documentary on the

Rolling Stones.

Jérôme Sans, the most rock and roll of

curators, designed this exhibition himself. A

founder and former director of the Palais de

Tokyo in Paris, he was recently appointed

director of the Ullens Centre for Contemporary

Art in Peking. Fascinated by artists who

effortlessly switch from one discipline to

another, over these past fifteen years he has

turned the spotlight on the unknown faces of

world-famous artists. Music has therefore

always played a major role in his universe and

his activities as curator. With the singer Audrey

Mascina he is also part of the electro-rock duo

Liquid Architecture whose second album is

currently being produced.

The exhibition’s catalogue is a marriage

between a rock magazine and an art book. It

contains exclusive interviews with artists as well

as several photographs of their works. It is

prefaced by

Michael Bracewell, a

reputed English art critic and an

author of books about art, fashion and

music.

A Brussels symbol reopens its doorsOn the 6th of June, the Porte de Halwill stand open again ! The lastvestige of the second fortified wallthat surrounded Brussels, the portede Hal is one of our capital’s mostsymbolic historical buildings. On the6th of June next, it will be reopeningits doors to the public after havingundergone far-reaching renovationwork that started in 2007. Behind its

white, completely cleaned facade, visitors will be able todiscover in the form of a brand new permanentpresentation, the history of the building and itsoccupation down the centuries but also that of the city,its defence, its guilds, its folklore, all facets that prove tobe closely interlinked.

Among the pieces that will be exhibited visitors will beable to admire for example several famous masterpiecessuch as the chains of the guilds, the ceremonial suit of

armour of the archduke Albert, his stuffed horse as wellas that of his wife, the Infante Isabelle, the so-called“Charles the Fifth” cradle or the painting by AnthonisSallaert representing the Infante Isabelle participating inthe crossbow festivities at the Sablon.

The third floor and the attic of the Porte de Hal for theirpart will be reserved for temporary exhibitions and events.For the opening, the Belgian artist Marie-Jo Lafontaine willbe taking over the third floor with a video installationcreated for the occasion and christened « The Ball ».

Finally, to fittingly celebrate the reopening of the Portede Hal, families are invited every weekend in June toseveral lively events in and around the Porte de Hal.

From the 6th to the 8th of June, entrance to the buildingwill be free.

exhibition.

Jérôme Considérant is a world renowned

artist. His irreverent hijackings and his own

take on road signs making him a fully-fledged

iconoclast: and while Jérôme Considérant is

an agitator of ideas and images in keeping

with a certain tradition of Belgian art, his

language remains subtly universal !

Playing with the venue, he will take over the

gallery but also the greenhouse and grounds

of the Botanique with a new installation and

a few innovations, to discover without fail.

Exhibition from 29 May to 29 June in the

Gallery, greenhouses and grounds.

On the 21st and 22nd of June set up camp

with Napoleon.

Almost 1 200 re-enactment fans in uniform

will come from 12 countries : Germany,

Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Ireland,

Luxembourg, Netherlands, Romania, Russia,

Switzerland, Czech Republic and Ukraine.

Two encampments are planned : the French

at the provincial museum « Dernier Quartier-

Général de Napoléon » (Genappe), the Anglo-

Dutch and the Prussians in the ferme

d’Hougoumont (Braine-l’Alleud).

Visitors will be able to get to discover the

historical re-enactment groups and plunge

into an imperial atmosphere. The

encampment at the Dernier Quartier-Général

de Napoléon will be open on Saturday

between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and on Sunday

from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The encampment at the

ferme d’Hougoumont will be open on

Saturday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday

afternoon between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Des combats seront également

reconstitués durant tout le week-end.

A taste of Spain at the Atomium

From the 5th to the 8th of June, the

EuroFeria is back at the foot of the Atomium.

Gastronomy, dance, entertainment, for 4

days Spain will take over Brussels !

For the second time, the Atomium is

hosting « Euroferia Andaluza », the largest

feria in Europe outside Spain and a vector

of Andalusian and Spanish culture and

customs. Buoyed by its previous success,

the 2008 Feria, which will this year run

over 4 and not 3 days, will be organised

around five large « patios »: Andalusia,

Atomium, España, Expo '58 and Calle del

Infierno, each animated by several artists

and stands with highly colourful folk,

gastronomic and cultural atmospheres.

Recreating the decoration and layout of

the squares that host the traditional

Andalusian ferias, the Euroferia will plunge

the 200 000 expected visitors into a

timeless atmosphere. « Farolillos » (small

lamps) will decorate all of the « casetas ».

Magnificent, pure race Andalusian horses

will put on shows and parades, while fans

of the Flamenco and Sevillanas will be

catered for with dancers in traditional

costumes that will set the dance floor on

fire and flash the bright colours that

characterise the Andalusia festivities.

The Calle del Infierno will welcome

children with all kinds of different and

varied attractions in the tradition of the

grand feria in Seville.

As for food, gourmets will be able to taste

all sorts of typically Spanish dishes such as

fried fish, churros (sugar doughnuts to be

dipped in a chocolate sauce), paëlla, ...

and can quench their thirst with

« manzanilla », this typical drink from

Cadix that is served in all Andalusian ferias.

So join the party on your own or with

your family to the hot and frenzied

rhythms of Southern Spain.

A comme AnderlechtYou number 13,606 foreign residents who have movedinto the Anderlecht commune. A short survey of thiscommune to the West of Brussels, which was once greencountryside... and still feels like it in places !

Not so long ago, this very urban commune

was still a country district. Fifty years ago,

vegetables were being grown on the site of

the present day Westland Shopping Center.

Today, the commune, cut by the Ring, is one

of the most diverse. It mingles both the very

active industrial side, along the canal, the

commercial side in Cureghem, with a very

mixed population, the more residential and

rural side in Neerpelt. And of course,

Anderlecht is next to the Gare du Midi

communication node. To redevelop this

district, several measures have been taken in

partnership with the Saint-Gilles commune.

This is notably the case with the Atrium, which

aims to favour the creation of business, the

redevelopment of the area and social

interaction at the centre of the commune.

Efforts have also been made to ensure

cleanliness and security around the station.

A first step in welcoming member states’

nationals to Brussels. One small hiccough, the

population department has two special

counters for Europeans, but Romania and

Bulgaria are not yet recognised as European

member states in Anderlecht. In fact,

Romanians and Bulgarians must still go to the

foreigner’s counter “There is not enough staff,

but this will be sorted out in the next few

months… “, the commune assures us. We

hope so… They did join on the 1st January

2007 after all.

Born in the setting of the festivities

“Brussels 2000, European City of

Culture”, the Zinneke Parade has

succeeded in asserting itself over the years as a

new tradition of Brussels folklore on a par with

the Ommegang or with the Meyboom (see “In

practice”). Its objective is not only to build

bridges between the 18 communes of Brussels

and the city centre but, first and foremost, to

show in broad daylight the multicultural

wealth of the capital by crossing the social

barriers of the capital. “The Zinneke is based

on the meeting of the people of Brussels in a

playful, artistic and social context”, explains

one of the organizers of the event.

Two years of preparation,one day of festival, …

It was about 11 o’clock this Saturday morning

that I arrived in Tour et Taxis to attend the

rehearsals for the grand parade on 31 May.

Around me, some sixty natives of Brussels of

all ages in costumes, and all very

concentrated, … I approach the rehearsals of

the Zinnode Wagenya (a “zinnode” being a

multidisciplinary procession made up of about

a hundred persons who, together, will decide

to tell a story linked to the theme chosen by

the Zinneke). This year it’s “Water” that has

been chosen as the general theme. Up to

each zinnode to vary on the theme as the

fancy and inspiration may take it.

To the sounds of a choir starting up an

enthusiastic “Il était un petit navire”», thirty

bearers dressed in hand-made snake scales

begin to march along according to the

established choreography together with the

professional artists with whom they work.

Because, in less than two weeks, the day will at

last come for the spectacle that all Zinnekes

await with great impatience: the Grand Parade.

But let’s rewind a little, to the preparations for

this great event. The Zinneke Parade takes

place every two years. Each time, a small team

of ultra-motivated organizers set about

creating intense relations between

inhabitants, artists, schools and associations

from the various districts of Brussels and

through appeals for participation and so

forth. The project, artistic and social, invites

everyone to develop his or her creativity and

to exercise the imagination in open

workshops (such as dance, music, costume-

making, puppets, decoration, theatre,

fanfare, … held in cooperation with genuine

artists) and workshops within associations

(such as local cultural centres, hospitals,

schools and day centres and all kinds of other

associations). In all the Zinneke project will

bring together more than 2 500 participants,

where each will have the chance to find his or

her place according to preference and

abilities. “The marvellous thing about the

La Joyeuse entrée

Far from being a simple trundling-by of floats

and structures from the starting points of the

Parade, the Joyeuse Entrée is a moment

imbued with magic, a festive march with

lanterns and torches, as the pre-premier to the

Parade.

The Parade

The course of the Zinneke Parade will

meander, like a river. No fewer than 23

Zinnodes will pass by for the occasion along

wide avenues and through the narrow paved

streets of the City Centre. Each of them will

have its own starting point. Visitors will thus

be able to see the whole course, wherever

they happen to start out from.

In concrete terms the, parade will wind along

the following city centre streets: Place de la

Bourse, rue Jules Van Praet, rue Borgval,

Boulevard Anspach, Plattesteteen, rue du

Lombard, rue Charles Buls, Grand Place, rue

de la Colline, rue du Marché aux Herbes, rue

du Marché-aux-Poulets, then back to the

Boulevard Anspach, rue Paul Delvaux, rue

Sainte-Catherine, Place du Vieux Marché aux

Grains, rue Antoine Dansaert and rue

Auguste Orts.

For the occasion a special Zinnekepass will

allow all visitors to use the public transport all

day long. The pass costs 4 and is valid for

two persons.

Artistic installations

Starting 10 May space is made for artistic

installations by second year students at the

school of architecture at the University of

Ghent and by students specializing in Wood

Technology at the Hogeschool Gent. Robinet,

drains, rain, gutters, or, most improbably right

in the middle of Brussels, icebergs, ducks,

tides, … 10 artistico-urban installations in

cane or in recycled wood have been installed

as a prelude to the parade on 10 sites

charged with memories of when water

played a real or symbolic role. They seek to

raise awareness among citizens to the theme

of water and make them take another look at

their day-to-day environment. Surprise and

astonishment await.

How did you hit upon the idea of taking

part in the Zinneke project ?

« In fact, I had already taken part in the Parade

in 2006, but in a totally different way. With

four student friends, we had built a giant

puppet and slipped into the parade sort of

incognito, … I thought it was so great that I

really wanted to take part in the 2008 edition.

And since I’m a student in silk-screen printing,

I decided to place my talents in the service of

the Zinnode Wagenya.»

What is the project of your Zinnode ?

« Wagenya, the name of a fishing village on the

banks of the River Congo. We wanted to

approach water as a source of energy, as a

dancing, rolling flow. So we and the 130

members of our zinnode imagined a spectacle

where the fishermen are busy, he dragonflies

hang in the air and, as you turn around, you

sometimes see the vision of a magnificent snake

who, according to congolese legend, carved out

the river bed. The snake’s head will be worked by,

among others, “Les Vrais Richesses”, a centre for

persons with mental handicaps in Anderlecht.

mean for you ?

« I think it’s all about an extraordinary way of

sharing artistic and human experiences with

fellow citizens. Since everyone can join in, it’s

a project full of wealth and exchanges. The

Zinneke cannot function unless you agree to

listen to others and to set out to encounter

the imagination.»

979. Establishment of Brussels in the valley of the

Zenne. The name is derived from “Bruocsela”,

which means the dwelling-place in the marsh.

1100. Development of the town along the right

bank of the Zenne and construction of the

first surrounding wall. During the same period

the Dukes of Brabant build a castle on the

Coudenberg.

XIIth century Brussels becomes one of the stages on the

road connecting Bruges, the biggest North

Sea port, to Cologne, the biggest trading city

1421. The city acquires its first municipal

constitution.

1430. The Duchy of Brabant passes to Philip the

XVIth century Reign of Charles the Fifth. The city is proud to

Andreas Vesalius, or humanists such as Erasmus.

1561. Opening of the Willebroek Canal, last happy

episode before the religious wars. The people

of Brussels do not recover their normal high

spirits until the reigns of the Archdukes of

Austria, Albert and Isabelle, who restored an

age of prosperity for the city.

1695. The French army under Marshal de Villeroy

bombards Brussels, just missing the Hôtel de

Ville but destroying the houses on the Grand-

Place and a large part of the city. However,

this attack was to allow an ambitious baroque

architectural construction plan that has given

the Grand-Place its current fame.

1794 à 1814. Brussels is placed under French

administration.

1815. Integration of the city into the Netherlands.

However, the people of Brussels take up arms

and slowly regain their independence.

1830. Birth of the Kingdom of Belgium. King

Leopold I ceremoniously enters Brussels on 21

July 1831 (day adopted as Belgian National

Day).

1835. The king inaugurates the first railway line in

the Allée Verte, and the Université libre de

Bruxelles is founded.

Late XIXth century. Brussels becomes the capital of Art Nouveau,

thanks in particular to famous architect Victor

Horta.

1914. Start of the First World War. German troops

enter the city. The inhabitants of Brussels offer

passive resistance, aided by the local

authorities of the city and mayor Adolphe

Max

1958. Brussels becomes the seat of the European

Community.

1967. NATO sets up its headquarters in Evere. Over

a thousand international agencies are now

represented in the Capital of Europe.

1989. Creation of the bilingual Brussels Capital

Region, invested with powers to pass decrees

and with its own Parliament and Government.

The Manneken-Pis, this ketje (little chap)

sculpted in the act of having a wee-wee, is the

emblem of the independence of spirit of the

people of Brussels. A stone’s throw away from

the Grand-Place, it is the tradition to dress him

up on various occasions, for instance to

honour the professions. His wardrobe now

contains more than 780 costumes of all

origins, kept in the Maison du Roi.

Brussels zwanze (meaning “rambling talk” in

Brabant) is the typical mocking humour of

Brussels but also a Brussels art of living in its

own right. Often linked to the three dialects

that make up the brusselaire or marollien,

zwanze is still spoken today, not only in the

Marolles (the working-class district of Brussels)

but also in the old parts of Molenbeek-St-

Jean.Among the famous “zwanzeurs” (jokers,

tellers of tall tales), we find Quick and Flupke

(heroes of Hergé), le Grand Jojo (popular

singer of Brussels comic songs), Freddy

Thielemans (now Lord Mayor of Brussels) or,

again, Simone Max (author and interpretor of

sketches in brusselaire).

The Ommegang (“religious procession” in

old Flemish) is the oldest historic evocation of

Brussels. It dates back to the XIVth century and

was, originally, a procession in honour of Notre

Dame du Sablon. Today’s event takes place in

early July - 1st Thursday of the month and the

Tuesday before that. It sets out from the Place

du Sablon and finishes with a spectacle in the

Grand-Place. Commemorating the Joyous

Entry of Charles the Fifth in 1549, each year

brings more than 1 400 extras, with many

horse troopers wearing period costume. An

extravagant artistic and theatrical

representation !

The Meyboom (“Maypole” in Flemish) is the

oldest Brussels folklore tradition. Respected for 7

centuries, the raising of the Meyboom on the

corner of the rue des Sables and the rue du

Marais takes place each year on 9 August, St.

Lawrence’s Eve (patron of the Brotherhood of

Companions of St. Lawrence founded 1311),

before 17:00 hrs (imperative !).. Marking a

victory of the Brusselers over the Louvanists in

1213 and the carrying-off of their neighbour’s

Meyboom, a group of sturdy fellows march to

the sound of a rhythmic fanfare in the city

streets, accompanied by the Gardevils

(guardians of the tree) who take the opportunity

as they pass to offer a flower to Madame

Chapeau, famous character in the piece

“Bossemans et Coppenole” (see below). This

year the event will celebrate its 700th edition

and is today recognized by UNESCO as part of

the oral and immaterial heritage of humanity.

9 August. Procession sets out from the rue

du Marais - 1000 Brussels towards the

Grand-Place around 14:00 hrs.

From the Manneken-Pis to the Sablon, via the

Grand-Place and the Galeries St. Hubert, the

Noirauds, these «African operetta kings»,

money boxes in hand, tinkling charms on their

arms, faces blacked to hide their identity, take

up the collection to the sound of a catchy,

compelling fanfare. Their objective? To get as

much money as possible to provide real and

immediate aid for various associations

working in areas concerning disadvantaged

children. The “sortie collecte” generally takes

place during a week in March.

Heart of influence of cultures of the North and South of the country, and

sometimes even farther afield, Brussels has created its own culture, its

own way of speaking and its own folklore.

In 1910, Le Théâtre Royal des Galeries

inaugurated the famous play by Frantz Fonson

and Fernand Wicheler “Le mariage de

Mademoiselle Beulemans”. 100% Brusselaire,

this play shows how much a sincere, authentic

local work could find resonance in the culture

of a country and spread pleasure throughout

the whole world !

In the same register we find “Bossemans and

Coppenolle”, the play written in 1938 by Joris

d’Hanswyck and Paul Van Stalle. A great classic

for all Brusseleirs !

Should we protest about or applaud this terrific work ?

The video game world has been fizzing since the fourth issue of the

venerable Grand Theft Auto came out at the start of May. For

novices and the inattentive, a reminder of the principle: In this

game that is forbidden for the under 18s, the player takes on the

role of a Russian immigrant who lands penniless in Liberty City, a

sort of superbly modelled Big Apple. Confronted by the laws of the

street, this person must exist by committing acts that are legally

completely reprehensible: Car theft, assault, drugs, hold-ups...

Perfectly immoral and full of gratuitous violence, nevertheless

GTA4 is currently beating all video game sales records: Six

million copies sold in its first week. It is THE game that you must

have in your videogame library. But is it necessary to go there?

Everyone will have his own idea. But we must note that

breaking laws and rules is rather brilliant... It is still necessary to

keep a separation between reality and the virtual. That is the

whole problem.

The new BlackBerry

Here is the “iPhone killer”. At least that is what many

specialists have called the new BlackBerry range: the Bold.

Known under the codename BlackBerry 9000. In fact, it is difficult

to find negative points in this smartphone which will come out in

Who has not heard talk of theWii Fit?

A night at the opera ?

To end the season on a high note, the Theater

aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht is presenting two

sublime operas. On the 10th of June, the curtain

will rise on « Il Barbiere di Siviglia » (The Barber

of Seville) that recounts the tricks that Count

Almaviva must play to win over the beautiful

Rosina. Sung in Italian and sub-titled in Dutch,

this great lyrical classic will be performed by the

Opera Zuid and conducted by Fabrice Bollon.

On the 24th of June, it will be the turn of « The

Magic Flute », Mozart’s last opera, to take to the

stage. Performed by Reisopera, this multi-

layered masterwork, sung in German and sub-

titled in Dutch, harmoniously combining a game

of mystery, serious opera and popular musical

theatre, makes for a brilliant and enchanting

musical experience.

LE DÉLICECake aux brocolis

Véfour, à Paris. Pour une fois qu'une

recette de grand chef est simple comme

bonjour ! Temps total: 1 heure 5 minutes

Ingrédients (Pour 4 personnes)

600 g de brocolis ; 375 g de beurre ramolli ;

350 g de farine ; 8 oeufs ; 80 g de sucre ;

5 g de levure chimique ; 4 g de curcuma ; sel ;

beurre ou huile d'arachide pour le moule.

Préparation

La veille, sortir les oeufs du réfrigérateur pour

qu'ils soient à température ambiante.

Le jour même, travailler le beurre en pommade.

Incorporer les oeufs un par un.

Mélanger la farine avec le sucre, 5 g de sel et le

curcuma et incorporer au beurre.

Séparer les brocolis en gros bouquets. Les

plonger dans de l'eau bouillante salée,

attendre la reprise de l'ébullition, puis les

retirer et les plonger dans de l'eau glacée pour

stopper la cuisson. Égoutter sur du papier

absorbant.

Graisser un moule à cake de 25 cm x 8 cm avec

le beurre ou l'huile. Préchauffer le four à 210 °C.

Remplir le moule de pâte jusqu'aux deux

tiers, puis planter les bouquets de brocolis

bien serrés, tête en haut. Couvrir avec le reste

de pâte.

Glisser le moule dans le four ; ramener la

température à 180 °C (350 F.) et faire cuire

pendant 45 minutes.

Pour vérifier la cuisson, planter une lame de

couteau à l'intérieur du cake, elle doit ressortir

propre. Démouler à chaud. Servir tiède de

préférence.
