esk ternberk is the oldest inhabited amily residencein the Czech Re-public. Founded in 1241, the castle is still owned by the descendants o itsounders, the Sternbergs, noblemen rom the starlit hill (as a poetic transla-tion o the name may be), who belong among the oldest Czech aristocra-tic amilies. The castle was nationalised and state-owned during the com-

munist era, but the Sternbergs got it back in restitution and started to livethere again. The present appearance o the castle is a result o numerousalterations and reconstructions in the course o centuries. From the outsi-de, it has preserved, to a large extent, its Medieval character and still lookslike a ortress; the interior rooms, on the contrary, reect the lie style o aris-tocracy in the Baroque period. A great deal o the castles interior is open tothe public; the sight-seeing tour shows fteen rooms, richly urnished with

period urniture, paintings, and amily art collections. The Sternberg collecti-on o period graphic prints, thematically ocused on the history o the Thir-ty-Year War, is quite unique. In addition, thecollectionocopperplate en-gravings, collected by Ji ternberg at the beginning o the 20th century, which incudes 545 prints, is considered as one the most remarkable colle-ctions concerning this theme. The exhibition rooms also host an intriguingcollection o historic weapons, collections o valuable porcelain, and various

handicrat objects produced in the past centuries.

PbramA secret on top of a hill and under the hill

In the past, Pbram used to be a signifcant mining town; today, none oits mines is in operation any longer. However, some have been preservedas technical monuments administered by the local Mining Museum. In P-

brams Little Castle-Ernestinum, visitors may see a permanent exhibition ophotographs by Frantiek Drtikol (18831961), an art photographer anda native o Pbram, and a museum o anticommunist resistance. As a parto the museum, it is possible to visit the Vojna Memorial, situated in thetowns vicinity; this place is a ormer gulag: a work camp where political pri-soners were kept in the 1950s.Svat Hora at Pbram is a major European pilgrimage centre o the Marian

cult. This extensive complex includes a holy shrine, cloisters, and a numbero chapels; it was built on the site o an original Gothic church in the 17thcentury. The best Czech artists o the time participated in the constructionand decoration o the Church o the Virgin Mary. On top o a hill, the SvatHora pilgrimage complex looms above the town, linked with it by a Baroquestaircase with 365 steps, now rooed over. The main object o pilgrims admi-ration is the miraculous Svat Hora statuette o Virgin Mary. The main pilgri-

mage is held every year on the third Sunday ater Whitsuntide. The complexis open to the public; a guided tour is available on request.
