Summary of Kitakyushu Smart Community Crea3on Project

Main goal is to save energy by 20% and to reduce CO2 emission by 50%.
225 families 50 business institutes
District informa3on for energy resource • 10 general electricity u;li;es have obliga;ons and rights for the universal electricity
service in the society's infrastructure in Japan. • The experimental area in Kitakyushu is a special supply area where is permiTed to
supply the dedicated demand area instead of those above elecricity u;li;es. • Therefore one of the characteris;cs of this region is that it is possible to change the
power rate unit price by changing the actual power contract in coopera;on with Kitakyushu Higashida Maeda District Power Supply Union of the relevant region.

xEMS: Energy Management System
• Community Energy Management(CEMS) for community demand • Home Energy Management(HEMS) for residen;al demand • Business Energy Management(BEMS) for business demand • Factory Energy Management(FEMS) for factory demand
• Shop Energy Management(REMS) for Retail (Shop /Store) demand

Consumer+ producer = prosumer Demand side includes not only consumer but also producer
Demand side “Energy Management” is Big issue
Demand Side Management controlled or regulated by energy supply side
cooperation or self-regulated by demand side

Ø Kitakyushu city contributed to the founda;on for industrializa;on of Japan in early 20 century.
Ø Through overcoming of severe Environmental Pollu;on, Kitakyushu is now on the road of the sustainable development as smart community.
Ø Smart community pilot project is going to be operated as social pilot program from 2010 to 2014.
Ø This ac;vity is supported by several technologies such as Energy management system, Smart meter and so on.
