Life is moving faster than ever before. Between work, family and other obligations it seems we never have the time to stop and take a moment to see what life has to offer. This is why I love the holidays. For a few weeks each year we are offered the opportunity to take a step back and realize what is truly important.

Putting together the Holiday Issue of Housetrends only increases my anticipation for the festive season. The homes and ideas in this issue are already making me think about the ways I can spruce up my traditional holiday décor this year. From including fresh fruit in a table centerpiece to adding an unexpected pop of color to your red and green tree, there are plenty of ideas to go around!

I want to thank all of the homeown-ers who opened their front doors and invited us into their homes this year. Getting to know some of the great people living in our community is one of the highlights of this job.

On behalf of the entire Housetrends family, Happy Holidays! We’ll see you after the New Year, when we kick off 2012 with our annual Contemporary Issue.

Sincerely,

Evelyn Yaus and the Housetrends staff

PS: We’d love to hear from you! Check out our website, Housetrends.com for more seasonal inspiration and keep up with the latest home and garden trends on our Housetrends Dayton Facebook page. Thanks for supporting Housetrends magazine!

Holiday cheer is tucked around every corner of this cozy cottage

By Danielle Krouse

Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

Betty Peachey has a home and business to dec-

orate for the holidays, so she starts the planning

process pretty early. Betty is the founder and

owner of Coldwater Café, a popular eatery in

Tipp City, and she takes great pride in choosing

the perfect Christmas décor for her restaurant,

but it’s in her own home—a quaint cottage

that was built in the 1800s, where her love of

Christmas can be seen shining through in every

room.

Personal interestBetty works closely with Randy Luken, of Luken Interiors, and each year they try to find a unique way to pair traditional decorations with something a little different, whether it’s through color, flowers or just an overall feel.

One of Betty’s favorite deco-rations is the Christmas tree in the dining room, which is full of nostalgic ornaments. “It reminds me of when I was a child,” she says. “The shiny, bright colored bulbs going on the tree was magic to me. I have hundreds of these orna-ments and when Randy would come over and see the tree, he would just say ‘more, more, more,’ so it became packed full and I absolutely love it.”

The nostalgic tree stands near the dining table, which takes a step away from tradi-tional and features a natural-inspired citrus theme. Lemons, limes and green apples make for a bright, fun and fresh tabl-escape. The yellow, green and white color scheme is contin-ued throughout the house and highlighted over the fireplace mantle through bright tulips.

OPENING SPREAD: Betty’s tablescape includes fresh limes, lemons and green apples mixed throughout the settings. The focal point of Betty’s home is the large Christmas tree in her dining room, which is overflowing with bright-colored ornaments and bulbs. ABOVE: The yellow and

white color scheme is continued above the fireplace mantel with bright colored tulips and fresh greens.

Little detailsBecause the home has an intimate cottage feel, Betty wanted to make sure she didn’t overwhelm the space with Christmas décor. “I real-ize more and more that it’s about adding little touches of Christmas here and there,” Betty says. “You don’t have to use every decoration you own, it’s more about the little touches.”

One special touch sits in a closed-in porch where Betty displays her McCoy Pottery collection. There is a small Christmas tree that takes on a vintage feel, decorated with candy boxes and old felt orna-ments. It’s another way Betty sprinkles in some Christmas fun in an unexpected place.

At the same time she is decorating her home, Betty is also working to come up with a good Christmas theme at the restaurant. When the restaurant first opened, Betty worked with Luken on design ideas, and she says he continues to come back to the café to make sure she’s on point with the interiors. “I think he’s very proud of my house and the café,” Betty says. “I’m honored and I look at him as a mentor because he was really able to bring out creativity in me that’s been missing for a long time.”

Betty shares one of her favorite holiday recipes

1 10-inch pastry shell½ cup bacon, crisply fried

and crumbled⅔ cups shredded Swiss cheese1 teaspoon minced onion2 cups heavy cream4 eggs½ teaspoon sugar½ teaspoon saltPinch cayenne pepperChopped parsley

Preheat oven to 325°F degrees. Prepare pie shell. Add the bacon, cheese and minced onion and mix gently with fingers.

Combine the next 5 ingredients in blender and process for 45 seconds. Pour on the cheese mixture, making sure that all the cheese is submerged under the cream mixture. Sprinkle top with chopped parsley. Place quiche on lowest shelf of oven. Allow 1½ to 2 hours to bake. Quiche is done when set in the middle.

Remove from oven and allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before cutting. Cut into 6 or 8 pieces.

started collecting books 30 years ago. Today, her collection

stands at around 4,700 and includes a wide range of nonfiction. “I love true crime, anything about

forensics and the law,” Kathie says. “One of my daughters is a veterinarian and my son is a doctor

so I also have a lot of animal and medical books.” | In addition to books, Kathie also has a few other

prized possessions that have sentimental meaning to her family. As her collections grew over the

past few decades, Kathie’s house appeared to grow smaller. Built in 1977, the two-story Colonial

was starting to get a little worn around the edges. In 2009 Kathie decided to embark on a new

chapter in her life. It started as a simple kitchen and master bathroom remodel, but turned into a

transformation of her entire house and her life.

Chapter One: Sunny DispositionKathie admits that she likes to keep things that have meaning to her. So it was no surprise that she still had a 21-year-old newspaper article about Dayton-based Remodeling Designs. “I kept the article because I liked their work at the time,” she says. “That didn’t change so when I decided to remodel the house I didn’t look at anyone else.”

Erich and Kelly Eggers, owners of Remodeling Designs, spent a lot of time getting to know Kathie’s likes and dislikes before the renovation started. The house showed its age, with plenty of dark woodwork and trim. This was the one element Kathie wanted to eliminate. “Color was very important to her,” Kelly Eggers says. “She wanted to turn the house into a bright and cheerful place for her to enjoy.”

Interior designer Beth Spegal, owner of House Dressing Interior Design, came in to help Kathie narrow down her choices. Starting with the master bathroom, Spegal made sure to incorporate bits of Kathie’s whimsical personality into the design. Decorated in white and purple hues, the master bathroom offers Kathie a quiet place to get away. Featuring a vanity topped with a unique ceramic tile counter, the bathroom also includes an oversized shower and a quaint window seat, which is a recurring theme found throughout the house.

Travel downstairs to the kitchen and you’ll notice how the welcoming color scheme of blue and yellow ties the entire space together. “We didn’t change the size of the kitchen but it definitely feels like it,” Eggers says. “We moved a door, installed a bay window and rearranged the layout.”

Now, Kathie has a view out-side as she cleans up at the sink and she has plenty of storage space, thanks to a pantry and cabinets that soar to the ceil-ing. “I pulled the idea for the color scheme from the set of dishes I use every day,” Kathie says. “It makes me happy to go

into the kitchen now. I even enjoy cooking, which is some-thing I didn’t have much inter-est in before.”

Chapter Two: Window to the SoulPlans, which initially called for adding a sunroom off the kitchen, were scrapped after construction was underway. As the kitchen came together, Eggers and Spegal realized that a sunroom would dampen the new bright atmosphere and take away from the kitchen’s storage capabilities. Instead, a dark and dated library became Kathie’s new sunroom. The old brick fireplace and trim were painted Sherwin-Williams’ Oyster White, window seats were added for charm, and additional windows and sky-lights were installed to bring natural light into the space. The deep red paint gives the room that special pop of color Kathie loves.

It was unbeknownst to Kathie at the beginning of the renovation just how important the use of window seats would the use of window seats would

become. “After I saw the new window seat in the bathroom, it just seemed natural to add them to other rooms in the house,” she says.

In the family room, the win-dow seats serve three purpos-es. They provide extra seating when family and friends visit, serve as storage containers for her grandchildren’s toys, and help break up the bookcases placed throughout the room. “I told Erich that I wanted every available wall in the fam-ily room to include a bookcase, including above the television,” she says. “The bookcases were going to be the main focus in here.”

Spegal says the window seats are the perfect buffer for the bookcases, but she also needed to include that touch of color Kathie want-ed so much to incorporate. Usually Spegal says she shies away from painting ceilings, but in this case she thought

the dark color would help balance the book collection. “When you have a room full of books, you have so many different bind-ings, with so many different colors. The blue ceiling really calms everything down,” she explains, adding that the dark blue ceiling was color matched to complement the window seat and television cabinets.

Chapter Three: A Novel IdeaFinding a way to artistically display Kathie’s collections was a key component to the renovation. In addition to the bookcases in the living room, Spegal suggested creating a wall of built-ins at the top of the staircase. This gives Kathie additional space for her books, but also creates visual interest at the top of the stairs.

The stairwell also serves as a backdrop for some of Kathie’s family heirlooms. “My father was a sweater manufacturer and I had kept some of his old newspaper ads, business cards and stock certificates,” she says. “Beth came up with the idea to display some of the items on the wall.”

In addition to the laminated advertisements, the wall shows off old photos of Kathie’s parents. “This is history that we needed to capture,” Spegal says. “This wall tells the story of her family.”

Kathie also has a wonderful collection of Wedgwood Jasperware, as well as a few pieces of Moorcroft pottery from her mother. “Everything was basically shoved into the dining room,” Spegal explains. “I wanted to come up with a way to show it off.”

Instead of a traditional china cabinet or hutch, Spegal chose to build a shelf along the top of the dining room wall to hold the china collection. The china not only became as a decorative ele-ment, it also served as the inspiration for the green and blue wall colors in the dining room.

Chapter Four: A New OutlookAs construction wrapped up on the inside, Kathie made one more decision as she observed the outside of her home. “I always wanted a porch swing, but I didn’t have a porch,” she says. “So, I asked for the porch and it has changed the whole look of the house. I love it. I sit out there all the time and wave at my neigh-bors as they drive by.”

In addition to the porch, the old siding was removed and replaced with HardiPlank siding. Now the home has a cheerful façade. Eggers says working on Kathie’s house was not only a fun challenge, it was incredibly rewarding. “Not only did we get to update her house, we had the opportunity to change her life. That is something we won’t forget.”

these lovely little food bites can be creatively

concocted in so many ways that are

endlessly satisfying. Hot or cold, hearty

These refreshing hors d’oeuvres are equally delicious made with salmon, trout, shrimp or crab, so pick a seafood that’s best for your budget. For vegetarians, a slice of baked tofu is a perfect substitute for the seafood.

In a small bowl, combine sour cream, half of the chives, lemon zest and juice, salt and pepper. If using salmon or trout, cut into 24 bite-sized pieces. Arrange a piece of seafood on each cucumber slice then top with a dollop of sour cream mix-ture and garnish with remaining chives. Makes 2 dozen.

Tip: If you’re hosting a holiday party, get everyone social-

izing easily by having a few of your guests circulate with trays of appetizers. This will inspire

instant conversation even amongst those who don’t

know each other.

✽ Decorate your delicacies…Use simple garnishing techniques to compliment your appetizers and bring your presentation to a whole new level. Depending on the appetizer, garnishes can range from a bed of greens to curls of cheese or chocolate, to tiny fruits or sprinkled sugar or coconut powder. Garnish a dish according to its flavor and/or color (i.e. sweet or fruity garnish with a sweet dish). Do

you know your crudités from your

canapés? A crudité is a traditional

French appetizer comprised of raw

vegetables. While canapé was once

a French reference for the couch,

some people thought a piece of

toast topped with a savory food

looked like a couch, and so

“canapé” took on an additional

meaning.

Individual Veggie Pizzas with Two Squashes2 teaspoons olive oil

1 each zucchini and yellow squash, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 whole grain English muffins, halved and lightly toasted

1 cup prepared pasta or pizza sauce

1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Combine zucchini and yellow squash because the yellow squash is slightly sweeter and balances out zucchini’s “grassy” flavor. Also, select your favorite pasta or pizza sauce for these pizzas (for added nutrients, select one with additional vegetables).

Preheat the oven to 400ºF. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add both squashes and garlic and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until tender. Top the English muffin halves with the sauce, cheese, and squash mixture and transfer to a baking sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly. Serves 4.

the Giving SeasonHomeowner creates a festive décor for family and friends

By Julie Thompson | Photos by Daniel Feldkamp/Visual Edge Imaging

Each year, friends of Leslie and Ron Newcomb eagerly await their holiday visit to the couple’s

Yankee Trace home. They know from experience that the moment they pull into the Newcombs’

driveway it will feel as if Christmas has officially begun. Functional pieces—like the lamppost, bench

and flowerpots—are carefully transformed into elegant works of art reflecting the season’s beauty.

F But perhaps the most exciting part is knowing that what is seen on the outside is just a taste of

what awaits them on the other side of the door. “I love putting everything together and making it

flow,” Leslie says. “I want to create an unforgettable welcome where the inside and the outside

flow into one package.”

Ever-changing decorLeslie’s tree has evolved over the years to keep in step with her family. Its decorations were much simpler and more informal when her two children were younger. But as they have grown and moved away, her tree—and home—have become much more formal. This past year, she incorporated the color black into her home’s Christmas décor as a way to create a more formal tone.

Black ribbon was added to the Christmas tree to complement the red that was already being used. The ribbons create large bows that hold together bouquets of wispy greens, feathers and twigs. The result is a dramatic extension of what normally would be a very typical holiday accent.

Leslie carefully carries the feel that is created in the foyer throughout the remaining living spaces. Her home acts as the perfect canvas for a Christmas scene since it is already painted and decorated in golden tones and warm red and green colors. Even her recent addition of black is complemented in the great room where everyday chairs were re-covered in black fabric.

Each room has its own main attraction that acts as the cen-terpiece for its holiday display. The great room’s fireplace is undoubtedly one of those pieces with its full and abundant use of greenery, poinsettias, gifts, ornaments and berries. Leslie’s unique touch can be found on the mantel piece which was crafted on a section of tile so it can be carefully removed and stored with-out being taken apart.

Personal touchesThat’s exactly what Leslie achieves when she switches out many everyday pieces in her home and replaces them with seasonal décor that has been carefully archived in her basement. The deco-rating event begins on November 15th and takes a solid two days, but in the end it produces a scene unlike any other.

It’s a ritual that Leslie has done for years and takes very seri-ously. As an interior decorator and owner of Interiors by Leslie, she often uses her home as a showcase for clients and finds great delight in creating a new experience each year.

It starts in the Newcombs’ front entrance where bright red packages, greenery and bells create a path to the home’s front door. Large red ornaments hanging from a tree just outside the dining room window offer a unique view to guests enjoying a holiday dinner. The same ornaments are nestled into large shoots of greenery and sticks placed in pots on either side of the front door.

A large custom-made wreath beckons visitors to enter the brick home where an 11-foot Christmas tree awaits them in the home’s grand foyer. It’s one of Leslie’s favorite touches. The tree—which is framed by the lights and garland running up the banister—sets the home’s tone, which Leslie refers to as traditional formal. It’s also the first peek visitors have into the latest decorating flair Leslie has added for the year.

Decorating from the heartLeslie says she doesn’t design by any specific rules other than allowing herself the freedom to go in whatever direction her imagination takes her. She does have one piece of advice, how-ever: “Don’t be scared to take away all your normal pieces and replace them with holiday things,” she says. “Move around your accessories and make it feel as if you have a whole new room.”

Each year it’s hard for Leslie to temporarily part with the beau-tiful chest that rests in her foyer, but she knows the Christmas tree that replaces it will take everyone’s breath away. She has also learned that if she would let go of some small things for a little while, she’ll be able to create memories for a lifetime.

“It is just such a fine time of the year,” she says. “It’s about shar-ing the holidays with the ones you love.”

The dining room looks as if it was created just for Christmas with its rich red walls and green seat cushions. The large chande-lier is wrapped in greenery and decorated with small ornaments, and red tinsel and rope cascade downward to the table below.

The dining room table’s centerpiece was created on a piece of glass and is anchored on both sides by two large red hurricanes with candles inside. Since Leslie begins her decorating in mid-November, the table is always decorated for Christmas in time for Thanksgiving dinner and enjoyed through Christmas Day.

The home’s sunroom has a four-foot Santa Claus that looks more like what one would imagine when they hear the term, Father Christmas. He, along with the table’s centerpiece and three-foot Christmas tree, serve as the room’s focal points. Each carries the home’s holiday colors and themes with their reds, greens and gold hues. The table’s centerpiece, in particular, brings many of the same materials that are used in the home’s front porch designs, indoors.

HOMEOWNERTIP NO. 01WAYS TO HAVE A BETTER RELATIONSHIPWITH YOUR REMODELING CONTRACTOR

The Miami Valley Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) offers homeowners some pointers on how to maintain a good relation-ship with their remodeling contractors during a home remodel. A first-rate remodeling contractor will often anticipate many of these points and prepare a hom-eowner for what’s ahead.

NARI says, follow these tips and make life during a home remodel a little easier:

• Before work begins, sit down with your contrac-tor and discuss details that will affect your daily routine. For example, ask that the workers do not block the driveway without checking whether the homeowner’s car is out of the garage. Also, find out what their schedule will be so you know what to expect, and if the schedule falls behind, be sure to ask why to keep that line of communication open.

• From day one, be honest with your contractor about your expectations. Open communication establishes trust and is the basis of a good work-ing relationship. Discuss problems or irritations as they occur so you and your contractor can devise alternative solutions.

• Be sure to let your contractor know if you are planning a vacation or business trip so they can make their own schedule. If you decide to let them work while you are away, give them a phone number so they can reach you in case there is a question.

• Allow plenty of time for your project, keeping in mind that delays due to weather, material short-age or other problems cannot be predicted ahead of time.

• Remove your personal property from the con-struction areas, and declare all work zones off limits to children and pets.

• Always put changes in writing, especially if the plans are modified while the work is being done. Have both parties agree on the changes and sign a written copy of them before the work begins. And remember, changes will often cause delays, so if you decide a change is in order, be patient with the extended timeline.

• Keep all paperwork related to the job in one place so that if there are any questions on the plans, you have an easy reference for clarification.

And remember, be patient and keep your mind on the end result. In due time, you’ll be cooking your first meal in your new kitchen or soaking in your new bath, and you will have forgotten the noise and dust, and you can relax in your newly remodeled home.
