The virtue for the Month of February is “Love” "Love" can mean so many different things!

The "Christian love" that Jesus taught us means treating others with kindness and respect and helping them when they need it. It is the kind of love we do instead of the kind of love we feel.

One story that comes to mind when thinking about love, kindness and reaching out to others is one that you will recall entitled “The Good Samaritan – Luke 10:25-37”. I provide it for you to share with your students, staff, colleagues, friends, and family as we focus on the true meaning of love during the month of February in our schools and offices.

“Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he said, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself." 28And he said to him, "You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live." 29But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbour?" 30Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, 'Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.' 36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?" 37He said, "The one who showed him mercy." Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

Love can mean so many different things and as we guide our students to be the best they can be, work hand in hand with our colleagues, let us always be mindful of what we can do to reach out to those in need. I know that you give so much of yourself on a daily basis and for this we thank you for your continued service to Catholic education. Remember, that it is in giving that we receive.

I have the utmost confidence that as you introduce activities in your school with a focus on love and kindness, that there will be many “Good Samaritan” stories written by your students. These could be shared for posting on our web site if you wish.

Information is posted on the front page of our web site on the home page at www.tcdsb.org regarding our virtue of the month. Additional scripture quotes that can be used throughout the month of February provided by Stephen Carey of our Religious Education Department can be found as page 2 of my message on the web. Lenten Retreat for Teachers 2008

Catholic educators; professors, classroom teachers, educational assistants, tutors, etc. are invited to take time out this Lent to reflect on their vocation as teacher. This year, in anticipation of the Year of St Paul, the theme of the retreat will be “In the footsteps of St Paul, the Teacher”. Mass will be celebrated. TCDSB Policy A.21, Regulation 10 (ii) states, “The historical materials prepared for school openings – a copy of all such materials including copies of audio and video tapes, invitations, programs, newspaper accounts etc. should be forwarded to the archives for retention in the school history file.”

Archives and Records Management (ARM) maintains a history file for each open and closed TCDSB school.

3Rs Recap: IMPORTANT REMINDER: Ministry of Ontario 3Rs Inspectors are coming!

The Ministry is contacting school boards to ensure that everyone is aware that it is the LAW to recycle. Your school could be visited by an Ontario Ministry of the Environment inspector to ensure that you are meeting the 3Rs requirements. Each school should have a recycling program in place to source separate recyclables (paper, cans and bottles) from waste. Individuals are responsible for their waste, and should separate recycling from the garbage. New Year TIP – Set a target Diversion rate for your school. Most schools should be diverting over 80% of their waste from landfill into recycling programs. Contact the EcoTeam for assistance in figuring out your Diversion Rate.

ASHIF JAFFER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPPORT

The Ashif Jaffer Award for Excellence in Special Education Support recognizes a Toronto Catholic District School Board teacher, education assistant, peer tutor/helper or volunteer who has demonstrated excellence in the support of Special Education, in one or more of the following areas:

• promoting the rights and dignity of the exceptional student • working collaboratively with a team to give support to student(s) with special needs who is/are integrated into

the regular classroom curriculum and the individual education plan • fostering the development of social interaction between exceptional students and their peers • fostering the inclusion of the exceptional student into the extra-curricular life of the school • fostering the development of peer tutoring within the regular classroom • fostering positive relationships with parents and encourage their participation in program implementation

THE AWARD is in the form of a commemorative plaque, which will be presented to the recipient at a special awards event or at a meeting of the Board. FATHER ANDREW CUSCHIERI AWARD In 1986, the Toronto Catholic District School Board received a donation of $10,000.00 from Rev. Andrew Cuschieri, the interest thereon to be awarded every two years to a TCDSB student, between the ages of 7 and 13, who during those two years, has accomplished a humanitarian act towards another human being. THE AWARD is in the form of a bursary consisting of the interest earned on the trust account; the value to be awarded in 2001-2002 is approximately $600.00. In 1994, the Toronto Catholic District School Board received a donation of $10,259 from William Tajer, former superintendent of special services, to provide for an annual award for an exceptional student(s) of the Board. Named after Sister Mary Hamilton, a former TCDSB principal and resource person who had a very special ministry to exceptional students, the award is to recognize personal achievement or contribution to the lives of others. TCSB Employees Credit Union Limited School Community Award

As an organization committed to developing school spirit and community building, the TCSB Employees Credit Union and its Board of Directors has established the School Community Award. This award is given to an elementary school that promotes school spirit in an effort to forge stronger relationships within the school community as well as to build a stronger school community overall. Through the TCSBECU School Community Award, the Credit Union wishes to give back to the TCDSB school communities by encouraging schools to emulate the qualities that they so highly value – Catholicity, trust, integrity, philanthropy, community, compassion and charity.

The TCSBECU School Community Award is a special fund administered through The Angel Foundation for Learning to support innovative programs intended to develop school spirit and a stronger school community. A grant of $500 will be awarded each year to an elementary school who meets the criteria listed below.

The TCSBECU School Community Award will be given to an elementary school in the Toronto Catholic District School Board based on the following criteria: • The program focuses on promoting school spirit and fosters community building at the school level as well as

helps to forge relationships within the school community • The program is consistent with Gospel Values.

Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario: Initiatives in Catholic Education Michael Carty Award

OBJECTIVE Each year C.E.F.O. may award grants up to the maximum of $2000 each but not exceed $10,000 in total grants to support initiatives in Catholic schools in Ontario.

The objective is to encourage initiatives that improve, develop and enhance aspects of Catholic education that contribute to the whole person. Such initiatives would complement the central curricular program of the school or Board, and reflect the mission and goals of that Catholic school community.

INITIATIVES 1. Examples of initiatives that could be supported would be as follows, but possibilities are not at all limited.

a. A program aimed at developing and enhancing the leadership skills of students b. A program to develop appropriate social action activities involving students, staff and parents (develop

organizing skills, techniques, abilities to manage and evaluate) c. A program to enhance the abilities of regular subject teachers to teach religion both specifically and

through regular academic work 2. Activities not to be supported will include

a. Purchase of capital equipment, e.g. Computers, furniture, buses, etc. b. Provision of services, personnel or items normally provided through the Board’s or school’s budget c. Provisions of uniforms or equipment for sports teams d. Provision of funds to enhance any fund-raising activities within the school

SCHOOLS/BOARDS: The grant may be provided to a School Board, secondary school or elementary school.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES a. Applications for the awards must be received by March 7th for an initiative to be undertaken in the next school year b. Applications will be made on a form provided by C.E.F.O. that will require a thorough rationale for the

initiative and a clear plan for introduction, development, implementation and evaluation of the project (Please contact C.E.F.O. directly for application forms)

c. Applications will be reviewed by a C.E.F.O. Committee and projects assessed. The Committee will make recommendations to the Board of Directors.

d. All applicants will be informed of the outcome of their applications within 3 weeks of the C.E.F.O. Board’s decision

REPEAT APPLICATIONS a. Projects will be supported only once (e.g. A school that receives funding for a leadership development program

for its student council would not be funded for the same program the following year) b. Applications will be considered for 2 year funding for a project developed for a 2 year period

RECOGNITION Funds approved by the C.E.F.O. Board of Directors will be issued after the decision is made. A formal presentation of the Awards will be made at the Annual Fr. Fogarty Awards Dinner in October 2008.

Student Trustee Award of Excellence in Academics, Leadership and Christian Values

The Student Trustee Award of Excellence in Academics, Leadership and Christian Values is presented annually to an eligible student graduating from a Toronto Catholic District School Board secondary school who has demonstrated excellence in academics, leaderships and Christian Values, to encourage and support him or her in pursuit of studies at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

A scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating grade 12 student (The TCDSB Student Trustee and members of the Catholic Student Leadership Impact Team are not eligible for this award): i. Academic standing shall be a critical criteria used in the selection of the recipient (students must maintain a

cumulative average of 85% or higher, with no more than one grade 12 M level course) ii. The student is held in high esteem within the school community iii. The student epitomizes the mission of his or her school iv. The student will also have a record of significant contribution to the school community v. The student will have displayed a commitment to hard work and have an excellent attendance record vi. The student must have demonstrated active involvement in the community vii. The student must be a full-time student

St. Cecilia students participate in exchange program January 24, 2008 LISA RAINFORD , The Villager French Immersion and Core French students at St. Cecilia Catholic School are hosting a group of scouts this week and throughout the weekend from La Sarre, Quebec as part of an exchange program. They'll be "showcasing Toronto," said Letizia Marci, one of two St. Cecilia teachers who are participating in the exchange. The students worked together with teachers to design an intinerary that will include a mass at St. Michael's Cathedral, a tour of City Hall, the CN Tower and a visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame. "They are totally excited," Marci told The Villager. The scouts arrived

Thursday and are staying until Tuesday, Jan. 29. Their trip will include a one-day bus trip to Niagara Falls as well.

This cultural and educational exchange program is offered by the Society for Educational Visits and Exchanges in Canada (SEVEC), an organization that's been facilitating exchanges for youth in Canada for more than 70 years. One of its purposes is to provide a way for children to learn about Canada's diversity while making friends with kids from another region.

St. Cecilia students in Grade 8 will travel to La Sarre in May and should be prepared for both winter and spring-like weather. "Apparently, they could get weather like this in May," said Marci on Wednesday afternoon, referring to the sub-zero temperatures this week. Students will stay with a host family along with their "twin" and will be provided with meals, local transportation and a place to sleep.

The specific details of the Quebec portion of their trip has yet to be determined, but while in Toronto, the scouts will have a jam-packed visit. On their first day in the neighbourhood they were treated to Vesuvio's Restaurant followed by a walking tour of downtown with a stop at the Bata Shoe Museum and Royal Ontario Museum. On day two, they planned to skate at Nathan Phillips Square and tour the MuchMusic studios.

SUBJECT: 13-2a Friendly cook-off sees local students, community members compete January 24, 2008 CLARK KIM http://www.insidetoronto.com/News/York/article/39941 Two groups of students from two local high schools competed in a cook-off a la Iron Chef Monday, Jan. 21 with both teams presenting mouth-watering dishes. The friendly competition between the teams of four from George Harvey Collegiate Institute and Archbishop Romero Catholic Secondary School was an extension of a successful after-school cooking club that started two years ago. Guest professional chefs such as the head chef from the downtown Hilton as well as local talent who work in community kitchens, come in to teach students how to make healthy and affordable meals. The Stone Soup Cooking Club is a partnership between the schools involved, city staff who provide the nutritional information for foods and the 12 Division Community Police Liaison Committee that help recruit volunteer chefs. "It's been going fantastic. We had no problem getting people to come out," said Joan Seignoret, family studies teacher at George Harvey, noting about 25 students are currently signed up for each session held once a week. "The chefs have been wonderful and recognize the kids' possibilities. And it's improved my own culinary skills." Maria Araujo, a youth worker who helps run the program at Archbishop Romero, added the program exposes students to food from a variety of cultures they would probably never try before.




She also thanked Barbara Spyropoulos of the 12 Division CPLC for helping find the chefs to instruct the kids and inspire them to possibly follow a career path in the culinary arts. "We're always looking for more chefs," Spyropoulos said. She recruited Patrick McNamara, an internationally experienced cook for the past 40 years, who is currently teaching community members at the Learning Enrichment Foundation how to prepare gourmet dishes. McNamara, who established the rules for the cookoff, which took place at LEF, said the youth are much easier to teach. "They're easier to mold," said McNamara, encouraging everyone he teaches to be creative. "You never stop learning." As for the cookoff, the veteran chef added that a little competition is always healthy. The non-competing students from George Harvey and Archbishop Romero came along to act as judges. When the score was tallied, the winner was a third team. They were local residents enrolled in the LEF program for the past four months. The high school students called them "the professionals." But the student chefs came a close second, preparing exquisite meals of their own consisting of marinated chicken, stir-fry vegetables and steamed rice. Leanna Doodnath and Rayman Bulkan from George Harvey said the cooking club was a great experience and both took advantage of learning from professional chefs.

"It's nice to have someone who knows what they're talking about and in the field," Rayman said. Leanna, who is hoping to become a full-time chef one day, agreed. "My goal and dream is to open a restaurant," she said.

Romaine Lawrence lived up to his nickname Tuesday, leading Mother Teresa Titans to an 87-62 victory against the Jean Vanier Mavericks in a showdown of undefeated teams in the TDCAA senior boys basketball standings. The man known as "King Romaine" because whenever he goes out on the court he gets what he wants, scored 30 points as the Titans kept their undefeated record intact at 8-0. It was the 11th game in 15 days for the Titans and the fatigue from their gruelling schedule was showing in the first quarter where Mother Teresa committed a number of turnovers that, luckily, Vanier could not capitalize on. Teresa led after the first eight minutes. Vanier’s offensive rebounding helped them take the lead for the first time in the game with 18 seconds to go in the second quarter. However, the lead was short lived after precision foul shooting put the Titans back on top to close the half. Gallacher was not happy with his team’s performance and let them know at the end of the quarter. "In the first half we didn’t play too well, I think we need to play a little smarter, a little more intense," Gallacher said. Lawrence echoed his sentiments. "He wasn’t happy with our performance,” he said. "[The halftime talk] wasn’t bad, he was yelling at us because we were playing horrible and he just wanted us to play great. He just boosted us to play well." The Titans started the third quarter with authority when Ashton Khan scored off of a fast break. But it was Mother Teresa’s six-foot-eight centre, Maurice Walker, who produced an offensive rebound and drove to the Vanier basket for a dunk. Khan produced another two points off a fast break from Lawrence. Lawrence had the hot hand in the third quarter as he banked four three-pointers in a row. Every time he shot from the perimeter, fans held up three fingers, anticipating another three ball from ‘King Romaine.’ Walker produced three blocks in the fourth quarter bringing Titans fans to their feet. Walker was also a member of Canada’s Junior Men’s National Basketball Team and at 16 years-old is already striking the attention of several NCAA schools. "The first half of play we played kind of sloppy but we picked up our intensity in the second half and that’s how we got our lead and won the game," said Khan who scored 17 points

Officials at a local high school are trying to create opportunities during lunch for students so they won’t hang out at the local plaza.

Paul McAlpine, principal of Pope John Paul II Secondary School, said they are taking steps to keep the students in the school. "We’re trying to draw kids into our own cafeteria so they will enjoy a menu that would keep them here," McAlpine said. But due to the amount of students at the school, the cafeteria is at times unable to handle two lunch breaks with roughly 700 students each time, he said, adding there is a need to filter students out into the community or for them to bring their own lunches.

"We’re very limited by the plaza up the street which treats us very well," he said. "But they’re also inundated with students over a very short lunch period." Frank Chi, an employee at the Village Smoke and Convenience store, said there are times when 15 to 20 students are in the store simultaneously during lunch. "I need at least two people here to deal with the rush," Chi said. as he warmed up some of the patties served at his store.

The assistant manager of the Popeye’s Chicken and Biscuits also said her store is really crowded daily from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. She mentioned this is usually the case during the wintertime when no students want to eat outside due to the cold weather conditions. "There’s no other place to go to sit," she said. "They have one pizza place here and [one] chicken place to go to. "Students said the plaza is a popular destination because it is the only place that serves food other than their school. "They’re the closest stores," said Jessica Moore, a student at JPII. She said the students not only like coming to the plaza to get lunch, but also "to take a break from school." Another students pointed to the lack of transportation as an issue. "There isn’t really anywhere else to go if you don’t have a car," said Amanda Bacchus. "We don’t drive; [the plaza] is walking distance." McAlpine said the school has a good rapport with the merchants at the plaza and he visits the plaza on a monthly basis to speak with its vendors.

From high school to university By Muzna Siddiqi Filed January 27, 2008, from the HP Science and Technology Centre For most students, getting through high school is hard enough, but transitioning into university and being able to maintain good grades sometimes seems like an unattainable feat. But this was not an issue for Karen Wong. The former Pope John Paul II Secondary School student graduated high school with a 99 per cent average, the second highest in the Toronto Catholic District School Board. She has been able to maintain an average of 92 per cent in her first year at the University of Waterloo in the biomedical sciences program and attributes her success to the training she received from an enriching program at her high school. "I think in a lot of ways the IB programme kind of prepared me for the amount of work that could be expected in university," Wong said. The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a diploma program that provides international education with rigorous assessment which well-known universities around the world recognize, according to the IB website. "The IB students are not afraid of the academic side of university," said Tracey Robertson, co-ordinator of the IB Programme and history teacher at Pope John Paul II Secondary School. Robertson said that, because of the amount of independent work these students have to do, they are familiar with university concepts such as tutorials, independent research, and writing exams. All of these skills contribute to an easy transition into university. But these students still may have adjustment issues. "They go from a very sheltered, structured environment where they’re in grade 12, they’re the top of the school, teachers know them and they have a real rapport, to this huge environment where they’re only a number," Robertson said. Wong said the IB class was a small group of 25 students who had the same classes together for four years. "I miss the close-knit group of people to always be with," she said. But Wong was not bothered by the fact that people did not know about any of her past achievements once she entered university. "For me, it was never really a big deal that people knew who I was or that I was supposedly a smart girl," Wong said. "As far as professors go, it really didn’t bother me that they really didn’t know who I was. Eventually, they probably will." But back at her high school, Wong has set the bar for future students. "She’s our ultimate peak," Robertson chuckled as she mentioned that her name has become a type of acronym amongst teachers. "How great can our students be? Are they a Karen Wong? "Robertson says Wong was the type of student who excelled at everything, and that a teacher gets a chance to teach this type of student only once or twice in their career. "She’s one of those rare and wonderful opportunities a teacher gets," Robertson said. "Just a natural brightness that really humbles you as a teacher."

Literature in Action: Students Inspire the Spirit of Giving in Pope John Paul II In December 2007, Mr. Santin’s and Ms. Silliker’s grade nine English class at Pope John Paul II Catholic Secondary School brought their learning to life by organizing a toiletry drive for Second Base Youth Shelter in Scarborough. The drive was an extension of the student’s study of Tom Finder, a fictional tale about a 15-year-old homeless teen in Calgary.

Students created a poster that educated peers on youth homelessness, advertised the toiletry drive to the school community and inspired the spirit of giving in the Christmas season. Students then prepared and presented a speech about the toiletry drive to each homeroom class at the school from December 3-14. The class received overwhelming support by both staff and fellow students, and collected approximately 500 toiletry items for the Shelter. To culminate the drive, the class went to Second Base to donate the items. While at the Shelter, the students also volunteered by making lunch for the residents and organizing Christmas gifts.

Second Base is a 56-bed emergency shelter for male and female youth aged 16-21. Not only does Second Base provide food, clothing and shelter, it also offers opportunities for youth in need to become independent and self-reliant within the community

On January 23rd, the newly established PLN for Guidance and Career Education (Area 9 & 10) hosted a Parent Information Evening on the Transition to High School. The event held at St. Elizabeth Seton was attended by over 150 parents of Grade 7 and 8 students.

The evening focused on aspects of the transition to secondary school including:

• Transition is Tough! • Choosing Appropriate Course Levels • Program Pathways and Post-Secondary Destinations

These topics were highlighted through a power point presentation delivered by the PLN teachers – Julie Fantinato, Brenda St. Bernard and Gina Vincent. Parents were also invited to visit individual High School booths and engage in conversation with the representatives from Blessed Mother Teresa, Francis Libermann, Mary Ward, Pope John Paul II and Senator O’Connor.

With the collaboration of our secondary school counterparts, parents were provided with the opportunity to acquire information and obtain answers to their many questions through a Q & A Panel. The PLN for Guidance and Career Education (Area 9 &10) plans to host a similar event next year!

SUPPORT SERVICE FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM AUTISM COURSE

Part II What is this course about? The goal of this course is to increase the internal capacity within the TCDSB for the provision of best-practice education for students with autism spectrum disorders. A high degree of expertise in the education of students with autism spectrum disorders is best acquired through the opportunity to participate in the provision of high-quality educational programs to a large number of children with widely-ranging abilities and challenges. Who is this course for? A small number of elementary and secondary teachers who would be interested in participating in a program of expertise-development in the area of autism spectrum disorders will be selected to participate in this course. Selection will be based on demonstrated interest in and commitment to the field of autism spectrum disorders and successful teaching experience. Staff selected should also be interested in working in a specific capacity with students with autism spectrum disorders. There will be an attempt to ensure that the various geographic regions of the board are represented. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply, but should note that only a very small number of candidates can be accommodated at this time. What does it involve? This course will involve the following components: • participation in the TCDSB Autism course Part I (if this has not already been done) • participation in other Support Service for Students with Autism – sponsored in-service and networking events • participation in Support Service for Students with Autism team meetings • weekly opportunities to observe and participate in the range of more direct services provided by Support

Service for Students with Autism staff, including: direct, intensive intervention with students student assessment mentoring of classroom staff programming support to teachers and support staff consultation service collaboration with providers of contracted consultation services case conferences

Selected teachers will participate one day per week from March 17th, 2008 to May 9th, 2008 in order to participate fully in the range of activities listed above, and will work closely on those days with Support Service for Students with Autism staff. Interested candidates require the permission of their school principal to apply.
