Cher’s make up is relatively subtle compared to her pose and costume. We see, however, that the eyes are lined with black eye liner, which helps to create the wide-eyed look of ‘oops!’ the definition of the eyes also draws attention to how she is making eye contact with the audience and achieving direct address. This use of direct address helps to establish her confidence and makes the audience feel that Cher is directly looking at and appealing to them.

A camera is featured in the image of Cher and, again, there are several interesting things to say. To begin with, the camera is large, which represents Cher being larger than life itself, a true extrovert. It appears that the camera is a vintage style of design, reflecting the quirky nature of Cher’s star image and the fact that she is a girl who craves ‘lights, camera, action!’ The striped design on the camera compliments and actually echoes the stripe on the trousers that she wears, creating a direct link between them and suggesting that they are all part of this exuberant and rebellious package: Cher is a live wire through and through and every small element of the mise-en-scene reflects this.

Another prop used in the image is a watch that Cher wears on her wrist. The watch looks like one that a man would wear, rather than the delicate styles favoured by women. This reminds the audience of Cher’s individuality and the fact that she has several qualities that are more traditionally masculine, e.g. confidence, rebellion and ‘bolshiness’.
