Attendance at any MIST competition, workshop (MISTalk), or activity is a privilege.

The policies apply to all students, adults, and authorized persons attending the

tournament. Participants shall respect all rules and practices at all times. Partici-­

pants violating any of the conduct rules may jeopardize their ability to participate,

and may be disqualified. Students may be sent home immediately at their own ex-­

pense. Participants and other authorized individuals attending the DC MIST 2015

Regional Tournament automatically accept terms and conditions outlined in the

MIST 2015 Code of Conduct.

Tournament Authority: Staff members of DC MIST are organizers and volunteers

(distinguished by a red or blue sash, accordingly). Any questions/comments/con-­

cerns may be directed to a volunteer. Any matters requiring escalated involve-­

ment may be directed to the organizers.

General Conduct: Participants must wear the supplied tournament ID badge at all

times from arrival at the tournament until departure from the tournament. Par-­

ticipants should be prompt and prepared for all activities. Participants are re-­

quired to attend all general sessions and activities assigned, including workshops

(MISTalks), competitive events, etc., for which they are registered.

Personal Conduct: Participants are expected to conduct themselves in a mature,

Islamic manner. Any acts that can be deemed reckless, irresponsible, or immoral

will result in disciplinary action. Causing bodily harm and/or having possession of

weapons, defacing/stealing property, and violating the sanctity of the tournament

are strictly prohibited. All interactions with fellow participants should be done in a

professional manner.

Prohibited ActionsProhibited Actions: Engaging in any lewd, indecent, sexual or obscene acts, verbal,

physical, or sexual harassment is completely unacceptable. Participants must not

loiter in restricted zones (including the hallways, food court, and Terp Zone), re-­

gardless of the presence of a coach/chaperone. A student engaging in the use of

slurs against any person on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, ances-­

try, age, gender, sexual orientation, or disability is strictly prohibited.

Lost or Stolen Items: Any items that are lost or stolen at a MIST event are the

sole responsibility of the participant. Retrieved items are to be reported to the

Information Booth.

Dress Code: Participants must dress in modest, professional, and competition-­ap-­

propriate clothing throughout the tournament weekend.

Media Release: By participating in DC MIST activities and competitions, you con-­

sent the release of any photographs, video footage, and names for promotional

and media purposes.

SPEAKERS

Dr. Daoud Nassimi teaches Islam at Shenandoah University and NOVA College in Virginia. He has been volunteering to serve the various Muslim communities as a teacher, Khateeb, Imam, marriage celebrant, and family and youth counselor. He started his academic Islamic studies in 1995 by first studying the Arabic language in Saudi Arabia. Then, he moved to Vir-­ginia to earn a second Masters degree and a PhD in Islamic Studies.

Sami is an American-­Muslim activist, educator and youth developer in the greater DC met-­ropolitan area. He currently serves as the chairman of the board of trustees for the Muslim Students Association at UMD. He is also active with the PGMA, Muslim Family Center and Maryland chapter of the Muslim American Society in different capacities as an educator and activist. Sami is married with three children and works as a Software Engineer.

Ehab Hassan is a Muslim youth activist and Islamic worker. He puts his efforts on motivating and connecting with Muslim youth and families by delivering sermons, leading discussions, organizing creative community activities, and serving as a writer for MuslimMatters. By day, Ehab is a Mechanical Engineer, and by night he is a family man trying to maintain his status as world's best dad. Ehab resides in Maryland with his wife and three kids.

Altaf Husain serves as an Assistant Professor in the Howard University School of Social Work, in Washington DC. He received his Ph.D in Social Work from Howard University and his Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Husain served as a two-­term national president of the Muslim Students Association of the U.S. and Canada (MSA National). Dr. Husain presently serves as a board member and chair of the Leadership Development Committee of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). He was a founding board member of the Islamic Social Services Association (ISSA).

Rumana Ahmed is an Advisor to the President's Deputy National Security Advisor in the White House's National Security Council. She has also worked on various Muslim Ameri-­can-­focused issues. Prior to this recent role, she served as the interim liaison to the Muslim American and Arab American communities for the White House Office of Public Engage-­ment. Rumana started at the White House as an intern in the Office of Presidential Corre-­spondence. She holds a B.A. in International Affairs from The George Washington University.

Muneer Zuhurudeen is a former MIST participant and Arts competition organizer. He grad-­uated from the University of Maryland College Park in 2013 with a B.S. in Mechanical Engi-­neering, and has been very active in the UMD MSA community, having served one term as MSA president, and is currently serving on the MSA Alumni board. Muneer also has experi-­ence with MSA at the high school level, and is an active member of the PGMA community.

Born in Queens, NY to Syrian immigrant parents, Ridwan Adhami grew up being heavily influ-­enced by the city’s diverse and urban culture. After getting his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Computer Graphics from the New York Institute of Technology, Adhami worked in the music and film industry as a director, editor, photographer and cinematographer. As Creative Di-­rector at Islamic Relief USA, Ridwan plans to humanize the struggle and to dispel to the world a message of peace, acceptance, and understanding.

Fatima Mirza, PhD, MSW, grew up in Northern Virginia and has been active in the Muslim community throughout her life. She completed her Master's in Social Work at Virginia Com-­monwealth University which helped her gain more experience working with young people and individuals who had experienced traumatic events. Fatima recently completed her Ph.D. in Social Work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, gaining advanced training in re-­search.

Hailing from Gaithersburg, MD, Salimatu graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in May 2013 with a degree in government and politics. In her post-­grad career, Sali-­matu worked with the community to develop narrative from first grade to college students. She also co-­founded the Muslim Monologues, a program that looks to provide sustainable community development through the sharing of stories and passing the mic.

Haris Tarin is currently the Director of the Washington DC office of the Muslim Public Af-­fairs Council (MPAC). He was raised and educated in Southern California where he received his undergraduate education and is currently pursuing his graduate work in Washington DC.

Omar Shareef has been involved with MIST family for many years. He serves as an organizer for MIST New York and has helped with writing the rules for the Improv competition. He also has written for MuslimMatters and runs a popular entertainment blog, Muslim Medicine: a site that strives to serve mostly fresh grade-­A certified zabihah halal comedy.

Adam is a former DC MIST Regional Director and now currently lends his experiences and excitement to MIST as a member of its Advisory Council. He started with MIST in 2009 as a security volunteer and has loved being a part of MIST ever since. Adam currently resides with his wonderful wife in Alexandria, VA where he works for an engineering consulting firm.

Asma Mirza is an American-­born Muslim who rearned her MBA from the University of Maryland. Asma has a track record of successful leadership in her roles as founder of the MSA Legacy Fund and as a founding member of the Campaign Civil Rights at Georgetown University, where she received her BSBA in Business Management. Ms. Asma has actively supported the positive growth of ISNA as the 2007-­2009 MSA National President and a previous committee member on the ISNA Majlis Youth Committee, Annual Convention Pro-­gram Committee, Secretary General Search Committee and as an ISNA speaker.
