Some questions to think about...

How many percent of the data on your servers gets backed up on a daily basis?

Is it easy to restore data in case of an emergency?

Do you check regulary that your backups are still functional?

How much time and resources does it take to perform and maintain your backups?

Is it an automated process or does it require frequent manual interventions?

How much does it take to troubleshoot backup errors?

How easy is restoring your data ?

Is the restore process going smooth ?

Key aspects to address

Backups must be reliableTape backups sometimes fail:

Order of tapes gets mangled up Tapes have a limited lifetime (tape strech, alignment) An incremental backup plan increases speed, but significantly

decreases reliability as wellDiskcopy operations tend to fail on open files

Backup & restore operations must be as fast as possible to minimize downtime

Tape restore operations are much slower and requires ‘tape juggling’

Distributed backups have to use minimal network bandwidth and storage

Only data that is not stored already should be backed up at a central location

Page 4: DC Protect

Key aspects to address (cont.)

Backup & restore operations should be easy to perform

Central management and event monitoring

Backup solutions must be easy to setup and be scalable as well

Support for all major operating systems (Windows, Linux, Solaris, HP UX, IBM AIX..)

Disk Based Backup

Fast backup data transferOnly unique files are transferred

Transfer speed determined by network and disk speeds

Immediate and fast file restoreFiles are online

no slow searching through tapes

Files are stored in full version no incremental backup reassembly

Page 9: DC Protect

Efficient storage/network throughput

Existing backup methods copy all data from the servers to a central storage medium. Storage and network capacity needed to execute this process is overwelming.

Our patented content based backup scheme will reduce those requirements upto 1/1000 for needed network throughput and upto 1/100 for needed storage.

Parallel backup operation

Agents on the target machines perform backup tasks in parallel and simultaneously.

This allows to backup a large number of machines within a tight backup window

This guarantees datacenter grade scalability of the backup solution.

Self-service Backup & Restore

Our intuitive self-service interface lets customers/divisions managers and end-users schedule and restore their own backups.

The DC-protect backup server has supervisory control over the backup cycle and will guarantee a working backup.

To recover lost data, the user can simply log on to a web interface and restore the particular version of the file or even full system.

System roll back / roll forward

Each day a restore set is made of the system.

A resore set is a text file with all the information about a (full)backup run. This file is the only thing needed to restore a server to its original state.

Because of DC-protects unique technology we maintain all data up to 3 months on a day to day bases.

DC-Protect can restore full or partially a server upto 3 months back and roll back or forward. E.g. You can decide to roll the server back to a date 6 weeks ago, you can change your mind and roll the server forward to a date only 4 weeks ago.
