A new 'Stang shares his view of SMU Football

I’m from Connecticut, and, it may be surprising to some that the story of the Mustangs is well known even back in the Northeast.

After my commitment to

the school, nearly every adult that I informed referred to me as a “‘Stang.”

It is because of this experience, that I feel that understanding the story of the Mustangs from their former powerhouse dominance through the death penalty will allow any newborn fan to be able to look forward to a brighter future.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, SMU was a star of college football. The team was certainly one to be reckoned with, with consecutive winning seasons and multiple bowl appearances.

In 1980, the Mustangs appeared in the Holiday Bowl with an 8-4 regular season record. The Mustangs continued to have an outstanding record in following seasons. In 1981 they held for 10-1, in 1982 they were 11-0-1 and in 1984 they were 9-2.

SMU stars Eric Dickerson, Craig James, Coaches Ron Meyer and Bobby Collins headed these years of greatness. But, the glory of the 1980s would soon be cut short by the implementation of the NCAA “death penalty.”

In 1985, the team had been accused of paying its players. The following year, the Mustangs were again accused and then the death penalty was initiated.

The team would be affected for a good 20 years with probation, fines and recruitment limitations. The “death penalty” truly harmed the image and the high level of competition that SMU had become accustomed to.

When June Jones entered as the new head coach of the football program, a new era of SMU football was marked. The initial 2009-10 season of Coach Jones brought the Mustangs to their first bowl game and bowl win in decades.

The Mustangs held onto an 8-5 season last year to win the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. This bowl win was truly a turning point for the Mustangs out of the many years of turmoil and destruction due to the overburden of the “death penalty.”

This season has seen its highs and lows. The team is currently at a record of 5-5 in the regular season but looks to increase its wins to six with a game against Marshall today.

The team’s conference USA record is 4-1, which is very outstanding overall.

Watching the comeback of the Mustangs has been very exciting but at the same time it has its disappointments. Through every home game loss it appears from the stands that the team is extremely talented and is simply teetering on the edge of greatness.

Each missed place or mishap on the field has nothing to do with undisciplined players or any issue of talent. It is simply a program that is attempting to reclaim itself. The defense continues to hold its own on important plays. The talent combines with Kyle Padron and all of the offense shows prospect of a bright future for SMU.

The game against TCU on Parent’s Weekend was definitely one of the most exciting games that I have been apart of. SMU was up against the Horned Frogs very early in the game with a 7-0 lead. The touchdown was extremely powerful for the team was well as for the fans in the stands.

The feeling of the crowd was almost tangible as a vast sea of red filled Ford Stadium. By the half, SMU was only down by four and came back to score a touchdown in the third quarter to bring them to lead 17-14. However, after the third quarter touchdown, TCU became unstoppable and took the day with a 35-17 win.

The point up until after SMU’s third quarter win illustrates the future of Mustang Football.

The stadium was filled to the brim with fans that can only be likened to the older glory days for SMU and the current stadium statistics of powerhouse teams such as Michigan, Alabama or Florida.

The Mustangs have shown that they are able to compete and with that ability, there only needs to be continued practice of this level of play in order to rise back from the grave.

Zander Geronimos is a freshman at SMU. He can be reached for comment at [email protected].

THUNDERING HERD TO WATCH

Dobson has developed into Anderson’s favorite target this season. The sophomore leads Marshall with 38 receptions for 632 yards and fi ve touchdowns. Dobson is one of the fastest players in the conference as shown by his 40-yard dash time of 4.33 and 16.6 yards per reception average. As a freshman in 2009, he caught 15 passes for 362 yards and four touchdowns. Last week vs. Memphis, Dobson recorded two receptions for 54 yards.

Today's game a 'must win' for both teamsGAME PREVIEW

By EJ HOLLANDSports Editor

After a bye week, SMU is tied with Tulsa for first place in the Conference USA West division thanks to two straight conference losses by Houston and could become bowl eligible with their sixth win of the season this weekend.

The Mustangs will take on the Marshall Thundering Herd in a pivotal Conference game at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m.

In 2009, the Thundering Herd finished with a 7-6 record overall and a 4-4 record in conference play.

Marshall has somewhat slipped this year with a 4-6 record overall and a 4th place standing in the Conference USA East division.

However, the Thundering Herd has won three straight games including last week’s 28-13 victory over Memphis.

Last year’s contest between SMU and Marshall came down to the wire and saw the Thundering Herd prevail 34-31.

In that game, SMU quarterback Kyle Padron threw for 225 yards and 2 touchdowns but also threw one crucial interception. Marshall quarterback Brian Anderson had a good day, passing for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Thundering Herd racked up 475 total yards, outgaining the Mustangs by nearly 150 yards. Marshall also had 0 turnovers while SMU coughed up the football twice.

Both teams have the same signal callers under center this year and fireworks are expected.

Marshall is 1-4 on the road this season while SMU is 3-2 at home. The Mustangs are in the same situation as two weeks ago: get the win and you are probably in a bowl.

Offensively, both teams are ranked in the top 65 in total passing yards.

Both teams have also been running the ball well and are averaging over 100 yards per game respectively.

Padron has been solid this year, passing for 2,745 yards and 23 touchdowns. Padron threw for 255 yards and 1 touchdown against UTEP two weeks ago.

Padron currently leads Conference USA in pass efficiency and ranks eleventh nationally in passing yards and has a quarterback rating of 136.6.

Padron also has three solid

wide receivers to throw the ball to. Aldrick Robinson leads the receiving corps with 50 receptions for 994 yards and 10 touchdowns. The senior is averaging 19.9 yards per reception and is ranked seventh nationally in receiving yards.

Junior Cole Beasley has not been too bad himself. He has caught 62 passes for 759 yards and 5 touchdowns on the season.

Finally, Darius Johnson has been yet another explosive offensive weapon for the Mustangs. Johnson has 57 receptions for 556 yards and 5 touchdowns.

For Marshall, Anderson has thrown for 1,919 yards and 17 touchdowns including 251 yards and 3 touchdowns against Memphis last week.

The Mustangs have established a ground game this year behind running back Zach Line who

has rushed for 972 yards and 7 touchdowns. The sophomore rushed for 54 yards against UTEP.

Defensively both teams are surrendering an average of over 27 points per contest.

The Thundering Herd is led by linebacker Mario Harvey. This season, Harvey currently leads the team in tackles with 111 including 46 solos, 13.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, 2 pass break ups, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery.

The Mustangs are led by sophomore linebacker Taylor Reed, who currently leads the team with 106 tackles, including 72 solos and 1 fumble recovery.

Look for a high scoring affair in this game as both teams are in a must win situation heading into today’s game.
