DCA Week 12 Review
Nov 13, 2012
Metals are before the stairs, Nonmetals are after the stairs.
Conduction
• Examples: – Stirring hot tea with a metal spoon, the spoon
then becomes hot, this is called conduction because it CONDUCTED heat.
Radiation
• Is heat transfer directly from the SUNLIGHT and FIRE.
• Examples:– Car warmed by sunlight– Person getting warm outside in the sunlight– Warming hands near a fire place.
Heat Transfer
• Examples:– Hot marble in cold water, outcome is: marble got
cooler while water got warmer. – Hot metal in cold water, outcome is: metal got
cooler while water got warmer.
Potential & Kinetic Energy• Potential: stored energy• Kinetic: Energy in motion• Examples:
– Potential:• Bow and Arrow pulled back• Pulling back a rubber band• Roller coaster at the top before it starts• Batteries have stored energy (potential) as you use the battery, the potential
energy is decreasing. – Kinetic:
• Ball being thrown• Pouring out water• Roller coaster in motion
Good Ways to Investigate Potential & Kinetic Energy
• Roller Coaster Lab• Setting up a ramp with a log, ruler, book,
wooden board, etc. • Hills, mountains • Water slide
Converting Energy:
Chemical >>>>>>>>> Electrical>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Light
Energy Transformation
Water Generators convert:
Mechanical Energy to ELECTRICAL ENERGY
Wind Turbine This is used to transfer
mechanical energy to
electrical energy.
Pin Wheels are a good model, BUT:-They don’t produce electrical energy-They can break easily from the wind -Too small to catch wind to produce electricity
Potential & Kinetic Energy on a Roller CoasterPotential is the greatest here!
Kinetic is the greatest here!
Density
• Density = Mass Volume
